Reviews for A Flame of Thrones
StrangePointOfView chapter 5 . 7/2/2014
This is fantastic! I love the world you’ve created, with all of its political games. And I enjoyed Suki and Zuko’s relationship. I only wish there were more!
Eppoif1 chapter 5 . 3/26/2014
That ending was sweet, but a little sad. I really love this story, I wish there was more!
Karinta chapter 4 . 12/6/2012
Why do you hate Mai? :D
Lunatique chapter 5 . 11/15/2012
Aww, bittersweet ending. So Zuko does choose to join the Avatar after all and I wonder about his thought process, since it seemed like taking over the Earth Kingdom was the best and safest course. Interesting conclusion, including on the pairing front, since it's rare for stories to deal with a romance where one or both are disabled, especially when the woman is physically impaired. (I do see a strange fetish for mentally impaired women, particularly for childlike regression, in some Korean fiction. Creepy stuff.)

The conclusion to the story was touching and uplifting, though I felt like some pieces were missing and am not entirely sure what it was a conclusion of. And what happened to Mai?!
Lunatique chapter 4 . 11/15/2012
More on the machinations within the Fire Court, leading me to wish I could find out more about this world and its politics. I like the stark terms in which Ozai presents the choice for Zuko, basically survival for himself and vengeance for Suki on the one hand and personal danger on the other. The choice seems clear, but there's got to be a catch because there always is one. And ooh, quiet cliffhanger with the news about Mai! Moving on to the conclusion!
Lunatique chapter 3 . 11/14/2012
This is an interesting way to structure the story, as a series of clips from a longer story rather than a full novel. Zuko, Iroh, and Suki seem to have formed their own internal resistance group and appear to be colluding with the Avatar in some way, a dangerous game considering their location at the heart of the Fire Nation. I liked the fast-paced action and the way the Zuko/Suki tension came to fruition. not to mention Mai's gracious (and freaking scary) congratulations to Suki.
Lunatique chapter 2 . 11/14/2012
Ha, I love how your deadpan sense of humor makes itself known here. ("I tried joking, once.") Zuko's uncertainty and shame of himself and Suki's take-charge personality are a nice fit. I see that the branching-off point goes quite a bit back, no wonder the universe felt so different. This is a fun glimpse into a cutthroat court dynamic that never loses a light-hearted touch. And while I'm not usually a fan of ballroom dancing in an Asian-themed world, I think here it's a good counterpoint to the budding teamwork and intimacy between the main couple.
Lunatique chapter 1 . 11/14/2012
This is an interesting AU, though I kind of wish you'd made it into your own world instead of an Avatar AU. The premise of children caught in their parents' political games is intriguing enough, and the world is different enough from the original universe without the kind of clear breaking-off point that I like in my AUs, that I think this one could have stood alone. Nice, lively dialogue and nice, subtle description of Mai's state of mind in that final sentence.
SixBrokenSteps chapter 5 . 7/8/2012
This was a rather interesting spin on things. A shame it's so short though. It would have been great to have more of this. More romance, more intrigue, and definitely more politicking. Just generally more words and more content. But otherwise, it was well-written and fascinating, a hell of a ride.
Tiburontooth chapter 1 . 6/8/2012
Hi, I have a friend in my college, she's Sunda tribe
MoonClaimed chapter 5 . 12/20/2011
This was a really good story that I really enjoyed reading. It was a funny idea that the first time Zuko met Aang was when he was going to join him. And I'm impressive that you're one of the only authors I have ever seen actually acknowledge that just because a poison doesn't kill you doesn't mean you get off scott-free.
Kimberly T chapter 5 . 12/12/2011
Ohhhh, dear. Suki's behavior in this final chapter seems to be similar to that of a stroke victim. Brain damage caused by the poison? Still, at least she's alive and out of the coma; that's way better than dead.

From Aang's mention of Ba Sing Se and that line "Zuko said nothing. He had heard enough about his mother's local policies." I'm getting the impression that things were no better under Ursa than they were under Long Feng. I'm curious now about this Aang's journey and everything that's happened prior to his meeting Zuko, but I know that curiosity will remain forever unsatisfied (melancholy sigh.)

"The Avatar [...] was naive, but Zuko would help. They bother understood, now, the futility of Games."

I love that line! And of course I applaud Zuko's decision to join the Avatar rather than do what his father wanted.

(Psst, Katara. After the war's over, can you spare some of that Spirit Oasis water for Suki?)
Kimberly T chapter 4 . 12/12/2011
So she left behind her armor instead of just a sash, huh? Should have realized that in the last chapter, when Mai was able to use the knife on her before she was even aware.

Then I read the latter half of the chapter and I swear, this is exactly what I was thinking: "How very Ozai of him."

Obviously I'm truly Avatarded, if I'm using ATLA character names to describe personality traits and behavior!

Azula waited for her last Companion to sit down, and then said as sympathetically as she could manage, "Mai won't be with us anymore."

Because Mai's attack on Zuko's companion was assumed by all to have been done on Azula's orders, making her look bad in front of her father at the worst possible time. Azula has no tolerance for failure, and even less for people who make her look bad. Bye-bye, Mai. Ty Lee will mourn for you...
Spry chapter 5 . 12/12/2011
Waoh! Just yesterday I read chapter three, and the next day I awake to find that two more chapters have been posted!

I could never update that fast! :P

Aw, poor recovering Suki. More to come soon, I hope!

Spry!
Spry chapter 4 . 12/12/2011
'"Really, Prince Zuko, assaulting your sister right in the middle of the palace? Before breakfast?" Ozai sighed.' But of course, Ozai! Zuko can think of nine things to punch in the face before breakfast!

What? Oh, Mai, you've done it now.

Spry!
