I have rarely seen anyone use the reduced lifespan well in fantasy fiction. I think only Er Gen has ever pulled it off well. It always comes off as more of a cop out than any real consequence. Can't let my OP protagonist be too OP, I'll just throw in a reduced lifespan to get some cheep drama...said to many authors.
