Hmmm...It's going to drive me crazy trying to sort all this out. Let's assume that everything in regular type is actually said by someone (a student, Gilbert, or Matthew). Then, if Matt's not suicidal, the italics are happening at another time. Like in a dream. Or are his thoughts. Or are the words of a therapist or someone like that. Gilbert's not dead...yet. He's actually getting a little better, but neither really believe that it will last. But Matthew is trying to enjoy it while he can.
