This story is excellent! I think that as a stand-alone, it's great. I haven't read Wicked, so I was thrown off a bit by the reference to Oz. I like your Bert's back-story; he's not magical, but he knows that magic is different. And I like how Mary doesn't know where she is when she's gone (sort of like holodeck characters). And the kiss was refreshingly different!
