Reviews for Not against Flesh and Blood
ArcaneMaverick chapter 4 . 1/7/2013
I am impressed with your intelligence. You are very well spoken. I cannot offer you intellectual discussion over philosophy because I have forgotten nearly everything except the names of those philosophers. Even though I want to change the X series story and acknowledge the Biblical imagery, I, personally would not include that stuff in my version. Not that I'm against it, but I feel it was executed poorly and I could not do much better with that material and direction. Also, as a marketability thing, it's not as appealing. I wouldn't dumb it down, but I'd shift focus and strengthen the world that was created in the early few games.

I also interpret things differently than you do, since I did not recognize the various themes and influences at work until you pointed them out. For example, in Maverick Hunter X, I thought X's indecision was because he lacked confidence in himself rather than moral ambiguity. He could not find something to believe in and kept giving his enemies ground when I don't think he should have. I preferred things when the mavericks were under the virus rather than their own choices. Mavericks who turned due to choice should have been special and memorable encounters rather than everyone in MHX.

I suppose it's due to the fact that I can't relate to the Maverick's stances. In response to Armadillo, I would have said, "There is a difference in following orders and thinking for yourself." He should not have followed orders if it was wrong and they were in the wrong. Uprising to take over and slaughter humans is not lawful nor good. Maybe if we were to see reploids being oppressed by humans or used as slaves we could understand a bit and Mavericks would have more moral grounding and justification for what they do. But we don't know that, so they have none. To me, Armadillo showed weakness because he let others decide for him rather than take his own reigns when it counted. Duty is a poor excuse for genocide. He might have been no better than a Nazi.

As for Spark Mandrill, I would have said, "Same to you. Did you yourself stop to think that you were wrong? Are you just following Sigma?"

The same goes on for the other maverick bosses. They claim the world is evil and must be changed. You can't have peace if your goal is to slaughter an entire race. The mavericks were always propagators of war and death. They took no role in politics, there was no debate, there wasn't even harm from humans on reploids to justify them. We as players don't see that in the game world. I guess we are supposed to imagine it as our world, but there is a disjunction between believing that in a future fantasy game. The makers should have made a greater effort to show us the similarities between their world and our reality for us to allow credence to that line of thinking. This is why I like Yellowtail so much. He bridges our real world problems and human natures and brings that logically into X's world.

I can't even acknowledge Snipe Anteator because X7 was poorly done. They fought an uprising over Axl? They have zero ground to make any accusations. They started the fight for dumb reasons. They weren't even rebelling! Sure the virus would have caused them to probably rebel eventually, but that wasn't Sigma's goal yet. It was just about Axl and Capcom trying to make money of the Megaman franchise. There was no reason for X7 and Axl was only created to make the series slightly fresh, but one single character can't do that.

That was brave of you to confide such personal stuff here. I can relate to the teasing and being angry all the time. I'm better now too.

I am interested to know what evolution means to reploids. What does it mean to us? Physicality, emotions?
I thought, and still do, that evolution was poor motivation for reploids because what could it even be? What are they striving for in their conflict that seems unjustified? Technological advancements? Being able to change into any other reploid? I don't understand it. Redips just seemed unhappy with his job. Having to smile at humans or whatever decade after decade? That was his complaint and cause to rebel? Why couldn't he just leave?

Why do you say that X's dream is worthless and impossible. I don't see it. There was peace until the Mavericks appeared and virus kept it all going. Maybe that's how my story would end, X would have to be reploid-Jesus and die saving the world from the majority of mavericks and the virus for both humans and reploids. He's saved everyone for years, surely the humans could admire him? And the reploids should being he's their father.

I think the root of the problems with philosophy and motivation in the X universe is the terrible writing the staff put into it.
ArcaneMaverick chapter 3 . 1/4/2013
Amazingly complete. I'm in awe of your effort.
ArcaneMaverick chapter 1 . 1/4/2013
It is only with Megaman X8 that I started to see the Biblical imagery. I don't feel very good about that being in a video game; not because of religion or anything, just that I don't think the concept is very profound or interesting in an X game. I think it would have been much better for them to focus on actual racism of humans and reploids than some god complex thing because that is relateable to our own world. At minimum I don't think it's executed well. I would prefer they use the imagery or Sigma's comments as their own unique thing or as racism than religious things.

I don't write a lot to post, but I do write a bit in my spare time to concentrate on making video game stories because I hope to become a game designer someday. I also have my own Megaman X story in the works to tie things together meaningfully and logically. Of course, some significant themes are inspired by Yellowtail.

I dislike later X games because of how they change the focus of the story and characters. I hate Lumine's introduction and the idea that Sigma is permanently dead without a satisfactory explanation after he's plagued us for about a decade of gaming fun.

I'm not sure if I agree with you about X not having a stand against Lumine from a moral perspective, because X seems to have no opinion ever about anything other than a level of pacifism. He always seems to just groan in hesitation before a character like Axel or Zero, tells the bad guy to shut up and X to not listen to their prattle.

The X series is certainly bleak when the wars are put into perspective or when one thinks about why robots must have been created in the first place. I wish the games delved more into that.

Maybe I've never understood what the bad guys meant when they fought for their evolution. What does that mean? I thought it would make them grow more powerful in someway, but they can't so what are they fighting for if not simply to live without humans. In storytelling it would have been better to keep it simple rather than go an extra mile to attempt to mean something more.

Since Megaman comes from Japanese creators, I thought it was interesting that Capcom included Biblical imagery. I never thought Japanese people would believe or use Bible things.

While I never played MMZX games, I can understand the viewpoints of the enemies you described however cliche and typical they were.

I worry that I think like Aeolus. I have no one to tell me if I am wrong to keep my ego in check.

I am bored by villains who narrate that the world is a cycle of emptiness and misery. I don't believe that. Not to say my life is sunshine and kittens, but it seems that either they just can't deal with loss, or don't know how to seek reasonable happiness.

I like your observations. I wish the games performed them better or removed them entirely. With what we have I feel it's just a mess of a story with more poorly justified or motivated villains.
GrimMoody chapter 4 . 10/10/2011
This is seriously weird. I dig it, but it's weird. I don't really think the Japanese who made this game were trying to say the things you say, but it's at least very interesting. I question whether it's fanfiction, as opposed to fan-nonfiction. Er, as nonfiction as a story based on a game can get.

So yeah, rock on, and all that good stuff.
twigggy chapter 1 . 10/8/2011
I sincerely hope this is a trollfic.

In the (hopefully non-existent) probability that it is not, I shall enlighten you on why Creationism is not a part of the Megaman X storyline. The reason is because Creationism (at least how it is depicted in the bible) is widely accepted as wrong (and downright stupid) in modern society, therefore it would not be in a series set more than 100 years from now, in a timeline that is itself more advanced than our own, where aliens are clearly real and humans are no more special than sufficiently advanced robots.
Mr. X chapter 4 . 10/5/2011
This was alot to take in. How did you come up with this on a simple game like megaman? It's truly is amazing! And like all that stats you came up with it must took you alot of work.
Adam chapter 4 . 10/5/2011
Wow! You took a game with little plot and made something like this. Good job. This give me alot to think about.
Shadow Fox777 chapter 3 . 6/28/2010
Holy shit. It's like, the ultimate list of battles and data here. Like the ultimate reference sheet. The first chapter also makes many valid and strong points. I knew the series was full of religious references, but Dang! You've got everything here from X to Legends.

It kinda makes me want to take a closer look at the classic and Battle network and Star force series to..
GlassSuicune chapter 1 . 5/17/2010
Whoa... This made me think...
Fighter McKnight chapter 1 . 1/19/2010
Hey, you reviewed my ZX thing... yeah, this is fepic.

I'm going to go masturbate to slime girls or something, I have

too much enlightenment buzzing around my skull!
TripOfDeath chapter 1 . 5/29/2008
I must say you have given quit an impressive commentary.
PrematureConcept chapter 1 . 5/28/2008
This isn't a story, but it is none the less a interesting commentary that describes and explains something I've noticed myself while playing Rockman, particularly ZXA. That many of the enemies you face use evolution as supposed justification for their actions, seeing absolutely nothing wrong with their atrocities, and follow the concept(particularly Albert) to a fanatical fault. Your ability to directly pinpoint particular characters in explaining the specific effect of evolution and its implications on a person leads me to wonder if the development teams behind the games are doing this on purpose, or if they are just unconsciously hitting upon these points without realizing it... Either way you've shown that the

rockman series, whether intentionally or not, is a good demonstration of the brutal effects and actions pure evolution and the particular naturalistic philosophy that rides on its back will inspire, prompt, and bring about.

I suppose the only fault of the document, though not inherent in the content of the document itself, is that while evolution is shown to be socially detrimental, most people who will read this probably will not be swayed to accept or even consider for a second a creationist or ID(intelligent design) stance on origins.(Or worse and very likely, will hate you and call you many names for daring to question what they consider the unquestionable "scientific" concept of concepts, evolution.) Most people have been taught to accept that the theory of evolution has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt and accept it uncritically and without second thought, and anyone(scientists included) who openly questions it or the evidence that apparently supports it is labeled immediately by the media or mainstream(naturalistic/materialistic dominated) science as some religious extremist quack. They don't or have never seen any scientific evidence, or rather, no one has ever shown them any of the scientific evidence for creation or ID. However I understand the main intention that this was written was to more or less comment on the presence of evolutionary theory and its effects in the rockman games(and to a extent the influence of Christianity in the background as well), not to directly convince anyone to consider any particular belief.

Anyway, less seriously, I was wondering as to how you came up with the expanded numerical estimations of casualties in the wars that occur in the games. (Like the total count for Elf war casualties .) Also lastly, I believe I've seen a topic on the RPM board with similar points and facts like this, was this compiled from any particular internet discussion?

With that I'll conclude, an impressive commentary. I haven't looked throughly at the number counts on the two following chapters about casualties in the series so this review is primarily focused on chapter one.
