I'm somewhat leery of the River/Jayne pairing, mostly because there's no real on-screen chemistry between them; Jayne doesn't much care for River in the first place, and River never shows any signs of tenderness in the other direction either. Thus, its hard to establish a really believable romantic dynamic between the two.

Also, this fic features as its main point the act of Jayne brushing a girl's hair, which is one of the most un-Jayne-like things I can imagine.

I mention these things to put my next statement into proper context:

This is one of the best damn Firefly pairing fics I've ever read. It feels and flows exactly like I would imagine such a story should feel and flow, and both Jayne and River are delivered in such a believable and understandable manner that holds completely to their characters. That bit where River talks about how she prefer's Jayne's thoughts and mind over everyone else's is so poignant and makes so much sense. I felt all manner of unmanly fuzzy happiness after I got done reading this, because it was just that well-written.

“You ain’t gonna fall, I got ‘hold of you,” he said, as tenderly as he dared, lest his tough and manly exterior be compromised. - lmao, to go from such a sweet thought to something so vain is just so typically Jayne, and I loved it. That was really sweet, I liked how he couldn't say no to River for too long, he's a big softie at heart, and the last line proves it. Really nice bit of fluff, well done!

Aw. Now that was sweet. Steel resolve huh, Jayne? LOL. To bad a ninety pound girl can break it like a twig. Nice story though. I enjoyed it. Of course, I always knew Jayne was a big softy at heart and apparently so does River.
