When Gimli brought up the distinction between cloven and hewn, I pretty much lost it. Poor Eomer: at least he had enough common sense not to get seriously involved in the discussion.

This was absolutely hilarious. Hewing vs. hacking... and then vs. cleaving. I never realized that there were such distinct differences between those words :P Anyway, great job with this!

Well, I feel educated. If a little strangely so. : )

You know, some people would discuss this topic under the heading logic error or Tolkien's mistakes - and you give a funny explanation! Typical. ;)

But is this the right moment to talk about words? I sympathise with Eomer (and would like to quote, hoping you read Harry Potter part 7: "Oi! There's a war going on here!"). On the other hand, the circumstances make it even more funny.

I simply love Aragorn's question: "'Direction and form'? Gimli, what manner of thoughts are in your mind when you strike a blow?"
