Contrived? Yes. Some formatting errors that made this a bit difficult to read.. yes. Still fun to read.. absolutely!

I like the way Ling and Yao stood up for Mulan in this chapter. They really did become like brothers to her.

This is a good story; although, I'm kinda disappointed Shang didn't get up the courage to confront the real issue. He was lucky, got a way to fight 'honorably'. Oh well.

How could Mulan be a widow when she wasn't even married in the first place? I think it was in the last chapter you said that the ceremony was going to take place the morning after she arrived? I wander how the Emperor will react when he learns that it was Chi Fu and that King who was trying to start a war. What was Chi Fu going to get as a reward for delivering Mulan to her death? I hope that the Emperor allows Mulan and Shang to marry as it would make everyone happy in the end. Maybe when you fix this story up you could possibly add an Epilogue tying up a few unanswered questions?

This was good! I was so disturbed by the earlier chapters that I hastily skimmed through till the end. Now I will have to go back and actually read it.

This is a really interesting story so far. The descriptions are lovely, and characters remain true to their nature. Though, I am a bit peeved at the emperor, as it seems a bit off for him. Then again, there'd be no point to the story, now would there?

hm, this fic is not putting shang in a stellar light...i'd be surprised if mulan still wants him! so all his noble self-sacrificing words, and he didn't know *anything* about liu while telling her she would be lucky and everything would be ok?

Can’t help feeling Shang is an ass here—for all his fine words, it’s really Mulan who has to pay the price even if he too will be unrequited in love as a result. And how can he be so complacent that the king of liu will treat Mulan well when he doesn’t know anything about the man? Gah, his machoness is pissing me off…the whole "I was sent to protect you not take advantage." nonsense! How is it taking advantage when she as a rational and wiling adult *offers*?

genuinely enjoyed so far. i love how you're dealing with serious matters in this. lines like the following are really simply wonderful in their insight and emotion:

“ Men, she seethed angrily. If only one of them did have the guts to speak their mind none of these things would happen. She had stood up for her father, and Chi Fu had silenced her, her father had yelled at her. Well she had stood up for herself the moment of her discovery, and Li Shang had relented. A man would have accepted execution as a matter of pride. She was tired of men and their pride and their resignation.”
