i loved this! The Trip / Malcolm dynamic is one of my favorite on the show. Two parts I liked most: Trip waxing eloquent about the ocean, and the excellent bits of humor. Thanks for a great story!

I read it at work last night and had to stop myself from laughing at several points.

My fav, Malcolm thinking Trip was talking about more than the diving when he spoke so eloquently about being under the ocean. Maybe he was, but it didn't come over that way to me. Then again, I get the feeling Malcolm is so socially awkward, that 'relieving his tensions' wouldn't be easy and he's drunk enough to focus on his needs and want while trying not to give them away, thus the misunderstanding.

Why do I get the feeling Archer might have understood Trip's monologue a whole lot better. The fact he arrives just as the Disaster Twins finish the first bottle is telling. Jon know's his crew, even if he was reluctant to join them at first.

Chef hiding his stash. Something tells me a certain engineer won't be long in uncovering that.

I'd love a follow up, drunk Malcolm and Trip with a slowly getting sloshed Archer. Maybe a sarcastically cruel Phlox who only gives them a partial alcohol detox the next morning. Just enough to make them sorry they over imbrued the night before but well enough for duty. I can imagine Hoshi and Travis taking pot shots at the Captain and Armoury officer on the bridge, in a humorous way. I'm not so sure the engineering crew would be as sympathetic towards their boss. I'll leave those thoughts in your more than capable hands.

Trip and Mal drunk together is so funny. Love their interaction and joking around.

I loved Trip talking about being on the ocean and diving. The commentary he gave about discovering the hidden treasures of the depths, I could really feel his passion for it. Wonderful. I would have liked to see Malcolm open up a little more about what he likes to do...other than read, Reed. (That bit was hysterical)

Awww why did HE have to show up! Ick. Still, wonderful story and great insight on the boring stretches. I wonder where T'Pol was in all of this. I think they got soused a little too early, because in Observer Effect Trip says he doesn't get hangovers and I would like to believe they can both hold their liquor adequately but sill bravo!

Bloody savages. Oh well, I always thought being cooped up in a starship that this should happen more often. Roddenberry might have envisioned a society without conflict, but people will always irritate each other when cooped up. Thanks for making Trip competent at fighting, ENT was all over the map with that facet of the character. Mal of course, should be able to beat him so spot on. This is fun.

Well, that was a nice ending. And a slightly thought-provoking middle, with a few touches of melancholy; I suppose even on a starship you get cabin fever in the dull stretches, of which there must be many! Not sure either of them are going to have sobered up enough for duty the following morning if they help the captain to drink ANOTHER bottle between them though!

After reading this, I just had to go back and re-read the first chapter to get the hints. Now that we have the backstory, on ward and up ward!

Let's see Archer's reaction while Trip fixes that little issue with Deck E. That's a discussion I'd like to be a fly on the wall for.

You made me laugh several times. Excellent characterizations all around. I loved it! Can't wait to read more.

Excellently described fight - good to read that both of them put their all into it without any malice, just loads of testosterone and determination. I'd like to think Malcolm would have won even if Hoshi hadn't inadvertently given him an advantage by distracting Trip for just the half second he needed, but I reckon it would have been a damn close thing.

Now, unfortunately, they have to deal with the captain...!

Well dang! Not only does Trip get his butt whooped, now he's got to break out his secret stash that's not so secret any more. Trip still obsessing over that chair! Oh brother. Well can't wait to hear this excuse now that Archer has them cornered.
