I really really enjoy this Ghost series. I think if you have time (and since it's getting up there in chapters) to perhaps post as a separate fic altogether?

I love getting my hair washed. It's something my husband and I used to do for each other and this scene reminded me of that. (We have littles now so it's trickier).

Same Saito, different scene but intriguing and while this is a complete story, I wouldn't mind knowing where you see this going!

It amazes me how you have woven the main elements of the Hakuoki story into an entirely new era and it is as if it was like that all the time! I would also like to see more of the others. The little tid-bits just make you more curious - back story and all.

This kind of. . .I wouldn't say bothered but maybe caused me pause. . .

Why doesn't Saito insist she call him Hajime?! She insists he call her Chizuru. . .I would have expected him to reciprocate especially considering they are traveling. . . He has a well known (famous. Infamous. . Certainly known) name as Saito of the Shinsengumi. . . And. . . I think THAT level of intimacy would be welcome. They obviously (perhaps intentionally since it is a fanfic) care for each other. . .

Not a criticism more just a passing thought. I would have liked to read that interaction. . . I mean. . .he proposed MARRIAGE literally hours after they reunited. Chizuru wasn't even sure he was REAL and he proposed!

Loved it of course! Or maybe you are saving the Hajime conversation for another installment. . . Hmm. . . .

Impractical Oni,

I generally ship Chizuru with Hijikata in my head canon but that's because that's what the Anime kind of focuses on (in Ezo) although I discovered the whole concept of the reverse Harem of the Otome game for Hakuoki is to ship her with ALL OF THEM depending on the route! But still. . .in my head. I read Journey and Quest (on AO3 as the pairings filter works much better there - filters for KazaChi) and it expanded my thoughts on who is best for Chizuru. And now YOU and all your AWESOME SaiChi fics.

I will admit, I read all of these and now I will try to go back and review each one. I love how understated the relationship is in your interpretation of SaiChi. No grand romantic gestures but you have a sense of the underlying fire between them even if they are not crazy about each other, they are so unsure of the other, and cannot communicate their feelings! And yet. . .and yet. . .they DO want each other and understand each other perfectly in the PHYSICAL sense. Maybe as they are both kid of quiet. . . Maybe they don't need words. Their world spun 180 degrees and time to rebuild, and at least they have each other (finally!).

This story deserves a sequel! This AU is full of possibilities.
I've never noticed before that so few of the shinsengumi captains came from regular families. This might be the reason why they cared so much about the shinsengumi: it became a substitute family for them...

This was a great little vignette! I liked the way you fleshed out the backstory with Souji and Heisuke at the beginning (it felt very natural and not like an info dump) and also the content between Saito and Chizuru was very *them* while also appropriate for this AU. Saito with a motorcycle, love it! Also “expensive, but not showy, and it was a lot less noisy than most” strikes me as somehow so very, very Saito — you could argue that in some ways, that probably describes him or at least his swords in canon (well, minus the noisy. I don’t imagine swords are noisy.) Good work with the steamy content as well! (also…I can sympathize with Saito’s “Why couldn't things be simple? Why did he always think too much?!” Nice job!

Hope they go straight from his apartment to city hall to register their marriage to keep her out of Kazama's clutches. Would also be nice if this encounter ended in giving Hajime an heir.
