god layla is so annoying

It's been a while since I've read any Mass Effect SI fics. I pretty much gave up on them when I started noticing some of the common problems with them. Too often the SI would just sell something on their person for tens of thousands of credits or more, quickly become a better engineer than anyone in-universe, and/or convince Sheperd to take them on despite a lack of any combat experience or credentials on the SIs part. There were a few gems in the pile of junk, but those were few and far between.
So I was browsing the archive and I decided to give this story a chance. I'm glad I did. My favorite part so far is Layla's reaction to killing the mugger. Killing for the first time often is a traumatic experience for most people. Her shellshocked behavior after the act and the nightmares sound like what most people would experience after having to kill someone in self-defence. I don't have much to say about Max as a character at the moment, but I will say that having him turn (or body swap) into turian is a story element that I think is surprisingly rare in these kinds of stories. Having an alien body with the mind of a 21st century human would add an extra layer to the fish-out-of-water experience that the SI would have to deal with, and that (if executed decently) would be fun to read. Although, I guess that would actually be 'is' fun to read seeing as how you and a few others are writing that. Uh, well, looking forward to the next update.

Considering that Max has little choice in the matter with being unemployed, he'll have to take the risk with the Blue Suns. Layla risking her life to dance for money and being vulnerable to more than just mugging... it's a pretty big risk she's taking, especially if she's uncomfortable about dancing for one's entertainment. Poor girl.

But in regards to the chapter...nice work. I'm super surprised she shared the shocking situation that stemmed from her separate sortie, and solely sought to shower her stress away. Was expecting a lot more drama to come from that so...I found Layla's reaction really interesting! And Max is taking things in stride pretty well too. Though I guess we'll see if that continues after he has his own bad day. But like all the possibilities you guys have to take your story! Exciting. Look forward to seeing more! As for you random reviewer...I guess I'll concede to that.

i might be a hypocrite for saying this, and i dont usualy rant this much but... what. the. fuck. Max. If i were stuck on Omega with anyone (if we split up) i would pretty much spam them with messages if they are ok every 30 seconds. I understand that you might get distracted with omnitool but for that long? My conscience wouldnt allow me to forget just like that. I wouldnt let them wander Omega alone. I'd probably only leave them alone so i could go to the toilet...
I am gonna stop myself here because the rest of my rant would be different versions of things i said above. But this better not happen again.

Poor Layla, hopefully she'll be okay. Not exactly nice to get mugged and then shot at. Thank god that guy was an amature at best.

I admit, at first, I was about to accost you amateurs for another abhorrent adventure with an absolutely anguishing atmosphere, yet just another affront and abuseful approach to authorly ambition. But then I actually analyzed your appellation, and after admiring the alliteration, all was alright.

Really though, I love the writing. I don't know who's responsible for the settings (I assume the obviously more talented LSW) but I love the descriptions and vivid details you guys give in every scene. It's something I really enjoyed while reading your story, something you don't see too often in others, and I hope you guys keep up the lovely imagery as you continue along!

One qualm I do have - If Layla was forced to live off instant noodles for an entire month, then how in the world did she afford to have a dog? Those shits are expensive. Only thing breaking my suspension of disbelief. Also...do you two know each other in real life? Always curious how co-written stories come to be on this site.
