Navn Ukjent chapter 7 . 6/22 Interesting first drop. I do wonder how the emerging magicals on this planet managed to learn enough to be a treath to anyone? According to HP Canon wandless magic is quite rare, and it's presumable quite difficult to use it effectively. I also have a few other obvious uses for magic in the Federation military. Various comfort charms, such as temperature control, insect repelling charms and making things soft can be useful in many situations, as can aquamenti and duplication of food. Using magic can also help troopers to land safely if they loose control in a jump, both by slowing the fall, righting spin or by softening the landing zone. The main uses of magic that I didn't mention in my last review is repairing equipment, duplication of ammo (presumably possible) and space expansion. Can you imagine how useful an expanded back-pack with weight reducing enchantments on it could be to soldiers? You could also drop a much smaller pod with an entire platoon inside, which would be harder to hit and would land the platoon in one place. The drop pods would of course also have various wards on them, making them even harder to shoot down (or even detect). |
Navn Ukjent chapter 6 . 6/22 Interesting fic so far, but there are a few things that seems a bit odd. First off, the use of magic. It makes sense to not bother with offensive spells when you have powered armour and heavy weapons, but there are other things that should be useful. I can think of several instances where various stealth spells, such as invisibility, colour changing, notice-me not, wards of various types and transfiguration (of terrain/buildings) could be very helpful. If you can change the terrain and hide behind it and some kind of wards, you could make secure camps or ambush enemies. Transfiguration could also be used to make temporary tools when needed. If the mission isn't to simply blast all enemies, both banishing and accio charms could be useful. Various levitation charms can also be helpful, and should of course have been used to save the trainee who fell off a mountain! The ability to teleport is also too useful to avoid! Obviously the current portkeys doesn't work between orbit and a planet, but that seems like a solvable problem. You could still give each soldier a portkey with dedicated landing spots in base camp, so that they can instantly return to base. In a similar manner you can make separate beacons for each trooper, and the leader could spread them out before calling his troops to him. Both portkeying and apparation is something the Canon HP world were used to, and they seemed to manage fine. The extra mobility this would give the magical troops would be extremely valuable. The final use of magic is of course in healing. According to the story so far, one trainee was sent home after he dislocated his shoulder and hip. The magical world can regrow bones and re-attach limbs! Unless the damage was due to dark magic, healers seem to be able to fix it. That this wasn't done seems silly. Another issue is the attrition from training. I realise that this is according to Starship Troopers by Heinlein, but wasting magicals in that manner seems absurd. By using magic to protect the trainees they should manage to avoid most deaths and disabeling injuries, which would give the Federation more useful soldiers! |
Shadowdog11 chapter 9 . 6/14 Woo. This update makes me want to zip through Starship Troopers again |
Noble Korhedron chapter 9 . 6/13 More A.S.A.P, please! This is getting interesting... |
cameron1812 chapter 9 . 6/10 Have I mentioned how much I love this story before? Combo of two of my favourite authors, with Heinlein's vision done to a T, plus our fav characters, and even a few guest appearances? Amazing! Love it! |
George Cristian810 chapter 9 . 6/8 I like your story even more bc it is based on the book and not the movies and i have a question and an observation . Will harry and hermione get together and MI reads more like specforces then regular infantry and in a attrition war they risk to lose bc they cant replenish their loses fast enough . They are good for small scale operations and blitzkrieg type of war but in an attrition war they will lose . Also , wouldnt magical medicine beign better then normal medicine for soldiers ? |
lord Martiya chapter 3 . 6/8 I had to re-read a few passages to convince myself you had written them rather than lifting them from the book. You got my attention. |
ObsessedWithHPFanFic chapter 9 . 6/8 Great to read about the four being together again and Hermione ruling the roost. Thanks for sharing! |
WhiteElfElder chapter 9 . 6/7 Yeah...that hole is going to be spelunked and there is no getting around it. |
Marc the Unruly chapter 9 . 6/7 Bugs? |
agnar chapter 5 . 6/6 Sorry but, you're nerfing magic too much here. Marcus had to leave because he displaced a couple bones? As if magical healing doesn't exist? Harry lost his entire fucking arm and had it back the next morning! If he'd lost a limb or organ I could buy it, but the level of injury you described, while it could put a mundane out of the military, it would NOT do so for a magical, unless they refuse to use magical healing. |
sandipi chapter 9 . 6/6 Thank you for the new chapter. Great idea for a cross over. |
