Ok I really need to point this out due to misconceptions of the ME weapons. A piece of tungsten the size of a grain of sand (or a similarly dense material) moving at hyper velocities is going to a do a good bit of damage when it hits something, especially if it hits flesh as hydrostatic shock would be devastating at those speeds. That is the idea behind the ME weapons. They trade off size for speed, capacity and penetration. The US military and most of NATO has done the same, we used to use large 7.62 NATO rifles for all troops but transitioned to the smaller, faster 5.56 NATO. The 5.56 can actually penetrate level 3 plate at under 25 meters whereas 7.62 NATO cannot under most circumstances. The ME weapons can also adjust the size of the grain to be larger or smaller but it also affects the amount of heat it puts out so the larger the grain the more heat and the smaller the less.

Psionically exploding all of a Batarian’s eyes is pure nightmare fuel to them, and not low grade fuel either. They’re very religious as a society, and their caste system is part of their religion.
