I wouldn't call it cowardice to want to survive, especially when you're been forced to fight in someone else's war that is being fought for petty reasons while the leaders don't put their skin in the game.

I also like that you show the consequences of being "heroic" in a war, i.e. it gets you needlessly killed.

In this case, the non-"heroic" action is the smart one and the one that is the least wasteful.
