The story uses the background setting of the Red-Headed League and creates a new case around the red hair.

Of all the things Watson wanted to do on his return from a short vacation, 'find Holmes unconscious on his bedroom floor' was certainly not one of them. Set after Devil's Foot

What might happen between the adventures, when Holmes has no case and suffers dramatically due to a broken wrist? Doctor Watson's writes a private journal entry and muses on his loyalty to Holmes. Written with Brett and Burke or Hardwicke in mind, but by now I always picture them anyway when reading Holmes.

I have always wondered what went through Watson's mind when he found out that Holmes was alive. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle never explicitly stated Watson's feelings on the matter. This here is my attempt at expressing his thoughts.
