Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Who I am as a beta reader? I am a seasoned author for various fanfiction categories, not the least of which are Saiyuki, Doom, Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion, and Final Fantasy. I also have experience with He-Man, Superman, some Batman. My betareading style consists of going in and correcting punctuation, spelling, and grammatical issues. In severe cases, I will rewrite sentences or paragraphs to make them flow better while still keeping the original point or concept in mind. My expectations of a potential "client" (and I use that term loosely, as these are totally non-profit arrangements) are that the story be spell-checked, grammar-checked, and otherwise gone over at least once for potential errors that you may want to fix. For best results, I highly suggest going over the betaed chapter after I have returned it to you, to make sure that everything is done to your liking. Also, before I start betaing a story, I would like you to send me the first chapter that will be posted so that I may look it over. If it looks like I'm not going to be able to do it without tearing my hair out, or if it seems as though I won't be able to complete the task on a timely basis, then I will likely say "no" to your request. As a last note: I am a full-time student. This means that I can only take specific requests that meet these specifications. Any others (i.e. stories that require excessive editing and re-editing) may have to be deferred to another beta, as unfortunately, my schoolwork comes first. Thank you for considering me, and I hope that we can work together, God willing. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Grammar, spelling, proper word usage, vocabulary, sentence and paragraph structure, and punctuation. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Time management. As I said, I am a full-time student, which leaves scarce little time for writing my own fics, let alone beta-reading, though if I am betaing a story, I will do my best to get it back to the author in a timely manner. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
One-shots, stories that have already been looked over by the author or another beta, and stories whose chapters are not 1000 words or less. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Stories whose chapters are less than 1000 words long; stories whose chapters have little to no grammatical structure, very poor to nonexistant punctuation, and horrendous spelling; stories whose authors use "text speak" (for example: "WTF? She 8 my fckin banana, wtf man?" or "idk star i jst got mi nls don idk if i can mke it 2 ur prty"); and homosexual stories (I can't read or write them; I don't have the stomach for it). I also cannot beta stories who have little to no characterization or plot, as I am liable to end up writing over half the story, in which case it would no longer be totally the author's story, and that just isn't quite fair. |
