I believe we in fanfic create for our characters what we want for ourselves. When life whumps us — as it has a tendency to do — what we crave is the love and support of a tight family unit, be it a biological family, a family of friendship or a mixture of the two. My personal belief is that real whumpaholics crave more than they're used to getting; hence, we draw beautiful word pictures of emotional and physical "oneness". Or, I could just be one scary puppy.
