FAQ

The following is a short FAQ composed partially of questions I've actually been asked and others which will inevitably asked at some point.

Do you normally take 6 years to update a chapter?

Har har! Not normally. I do, however, take many years trying to grow as a person and have new life experiences enabling me to be a better writer. I particularly do this when I feel that my ability as a writer has stagnated and has ceased to improve. There is always room for improvement.

Ok, then how much time can I regularly expect between updates?

Mean writing time is currently sitting at around a week. If this varies greatly, I'll always let my readership know. Also, I have forums setup for my work where I let readers know about a host of extra stuff, and it'll definitely be there.

Can I send you a PM?

Polite of you to ask. As long as there's a justifiable reason for doing so, be my guest! I'll do my best to write back!

Do you take requests?

For writing, no not typically unless you somehow made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I do have a Beta Reader Profile, so on the count of doing some editing work, yes I may be available for that.

Where are you from?

The United States of Asshattery

Is that you in your profile photo?

Uh, yep.

Why do you use such big words?

I've actually heard this a couple of times, and I want to dispel one misconception before it takes root: it's not the size of the word that matters, it's how you use it (hah!). Seriously, though, I don't intentionally use big words, I simply have a few personal tastes about style which has manifested in the way that I approach storytelling. Also, I like to amuse myself by finding different, exciting and new ways to express my thoughts. I actively search for new ways to express an idea, situation or concept so that it might benefit other writers in the hope that we (the writing community) might rely a bit less on the same old conventional phrasebook and a bit more on prospecting for fresh and excitingly new idioms and parlance.

Do you ever complete a project?

Evangelion Exchange will be my first completed project. Cat's Cradle needs a massive rewrite/overhaul due to the fact that the creator of Azumanga Daioh has since released supplementary material which has completely altered my understanding and perception of the characters involved, and I haven't decided yet what I want to do with Manifest Destiny. Especially now since after my 8 year hiatus from this website, my interests and writing style have changed significantly. Stay tuned for regular updates in my personal forums.

Do you ever write non-anime/manga fiction?

I've always had a guilty pleasure for the Fast & Furious franchise. I love fast, sexy cars and I really liked a lot of the characters. Recently, one of the stars from this franchise, Paul Walker (Brian O'Conner) died, perhaps somewhat ironically, in a car accident. This prompted me to watch the entire franchise from start to finish again, and it was only on this re-visitation did I see for the first time that, beneath the 90% CGI/fanservice/predictable dialog/unreal scenerios, there's actually some of the most fascinating characterization and subtle psychological explorations I've seen on screen in a while. If (and when) I write non-anime related fiction for this website, it's going to be Fast & the Furious, Mass Effect, Warhammer 40k, or 24 related. I can almost guarantee it.

What was your first anime?

Akira, then Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Who is your favorite voice actor/seiyuu?

In the Western world, Tiffany Grant. Although I also believe that Billy Crudup did a beautiful job with Prince Ashitaka in Disney's dub of Ghibli's Mononoke Hime and Steve Staley handled one of my favorite characters Kadaj remarkably well. As far as Japanese voice acting goes, there's no short answer. There are so many to choose from, so I'll just list a few that stuck out in my mind more than most: Kugimiya Rie, Mizuhashi Kaori, Kuwashima Houko, Nobuyuki Hiyama, Asakawa Yuu, Nogawa Sakura, and Ishii Kouji. There are probably many more, they just don't come to mind at present.

Do you like anything "mainstream", such as Naruto or Bleach or Haruhi or _?

I've said this before, but I generally prefer Japanese animated full-length feature films than televised series. That being said, I'll freely admit that my personal tastes as well as my personal standards for what makes a good show are usually out-of-alignment in regards to the popular perception. I don't like TV shows like Naruto or Dragonball or Bleach because they generally deal with very archetypal characters, many episodes are basically just "fluff" that are there to make the show as much money as possible before it ends without advancing the plot in any conceivable way, because of extra long series runs, animation quality and voice acting quality begins to suffer as the production team has to cut corners to meet budget requirements, and more often than not, the subject matter is just frankly not the sort of stuff I'm into. Case in point Bleach, which I thought was promising up until about episode 25 where it fell victim to the usual TV series maladies listed above. Not to mention, I'm not a big fan of fanservice--at all. I really don't like it unless it's absolutely necessary for character development, and I feel that any good series doesn't have to shamelessly exploit its characters just because the show can't survive off its own intellectual and creative integrity alone. For this very reason, I'm still terribly conflicted about High School of the Dead, and if it wasn't for Busujima Saeko, I probably wouldn't be watching it.

Where in Japan did you live from 2006-2008?

福生市, or Fussa-shi, which is a municipality within the western ward of Tokyo. I find Fussa particular anime-like, in the sense that there's an American Air Force base as well as the Tama River whose floodplains area is home to dozens of parks and almost 300 sakura or cherry blossom trees, recreational facilities and bicycle paths. For this reason, it is a great place for hanami with friends which is something that you frequently see in slice-of-life/school-based anime. It really feels like the backdrop for the film Blood: The Last Vampire and/or Blood.

Do you read fan-fiction, or other fiction on ?

Constantly. I'm also in the habit of leaving constructive reviews, not simple one-liners, so sometimes it can take a while. I work a lot of hours during the week.

Do you read anything else?

A lot of biography/memoir, fantasy, sci-fi, fiction, graphic novels and comic books. Currently reading the Watchmen graphic novels as well as The Killing Joke by DC Comic's Alan Moore and Brian Bolland. I recently finished Daniel H. Wilson's Robopocalypse and Tom Clancy's Threat Vector. I hope to get around to reading some of the books I received over the holidays as well.

Do you have a favorite anime director?

Not one, but three. Anno Hideaki, Miyazaki Hayao, and Kon Satoshi. The ultimate trifecta of directors.

Do you have a favorite anime composer?

Joe Hisaishi, Ghibli's resident court composer, would definitely take that cake. His work for Princess Mononoke is one of the most astounding soundtracks I've ever heard. It gives me chills just writing this thinking about it.

What's your favorite anime of all time?

Millennium Actress. Wept for an hour and a half straight after my first watch.

Do you have any big dreams or goals?

I'd love to put out a manga of my own. Completely 100% original. Just need a struggling but talented artist willing to deal with my bullshit. But the real question here is, 'If I did, would you read it?'

SHOUTOUTS

This is a place I will reserve for mentioning my best and most faithful review squad.

Seproth-without a doubt my most loyal and constructive reviewer to date. If everyone but Seproth stopped reading, I'd still complete my series just for Seproth.
