Chapter 21: New Blood
"Come out, come out wherever you are!" Dean called as he slowed and stopped. He heard the sound of running footsteps coming towards him and drew his machete.
Mia stopped short when she saw Dean aiming his weapon at her. "It's just me, chill."
Dean sighed in irritation and lowered his weapon. "You should have stayed with Sam."
"I just want to make sure you're not doing something life threatening."
He chuckled darkly before going off to investigate the nearby alley "When have I ever done anything like that?"
After their extended vacation in Atlantic City, Bobby had alerted them to a vampire problem nearby. The three hunters were hunting down their lead, a young female vampire who had been picking victims off the street for the past couple of days. Mia felt grateful to have another case because she knew three of them had become anxious and restless lately, especially Sam who was still fruitlessly looking for some way to save his brother's life. However, a small part of her wished they could stay on vacation forever; she and Peter had been having so much fun together going out to clubs, bars, and restaurants. Now he'd gone off chasing his own case and she wasn't sure the next time their paths would cross.
Dean suddenly pulled Mia out of her recollections by using his machete to make a cut along his forearm. It immediately began to bleed.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Mia screamed, as she went to cover his arm before the vampire could get to it.
"It's chum in the water, relax Mia," He replied nonchalantly, waving her off.
"It smells good doesn't it!? Come and get it!" his voice mocked.
A blood-covered blonde woman appeared next to Dean, about to sink her fangs into his arm when Mia grabbed her syringe filled with dead man's blood and plunged it into the woman's neck.
The vampire collapsed to the floor and Mia glared at Dean. Of all the stupid and reckless things to do, why would he make himself bait! Sam arrived, out of breath, he noted his brother's wound which was still dripping.
"That was cutting it close, don't you think?" He remarked irately.
His older brother shrugged, "Worked, didn't it?"
They dragged her body into a nearby alley and restrained her so she couldn't run away. She awoke moments later, and began to thrash her arms.
"What the-where am I? What's happening? Ugh… I feel awful!" The vampire moaned in anguish.
"You're gonna feel a hell of a lot worse if we give you another dose, so why don't you try to cooperate with us? Where's your nest?" Dean stated in an aggressive tone.
The blonde vampire, who looked to be about Sam's age, stared at Dean as though he was insane. "My what? What the hell are you talking about?"
"Your home base, where you go to sleep during the day," Mia added for clarification.
She continued to look extremely confused. "Look, I have no idea what you're talking about, I feel like shit, I took something and I can't come down. I just want to come down!"
Sam and Mia exchanged looks of confusion. "What did you take?" Sam asked.
"I don't remember, it must have been roofies or something. This dealer slipped it to me at Spider, that club on Jefferson. He said it would give me a really good high and it did for a bit but now I just want it to end. I feel terrible!"
"What did the guy who gave it to you look like?" Dean questioned.
She closed her eyes and frowned in attempt to remember. "He had brown hair, a beard, he wore a black leather jacket, his name was Deacon or Dixon or something? I don't remember."
"The drug he gave you," Mia piped up, "was it drops of red liquid?"
She nodded.
Mia sighed sadly, "It was vampire blood he slipped you, I'm so sorry to tell you this but… you're a vampire."
Her eyes nearly bulged out of her head, "WHAT? I'm not… I can't be, that's insane. I don't believe you!"
Dean leant towards her. "Oh yeah? Can you hear blood pumping? Does sunlight hurt and everything seems really loud?"
"Yeah…"
"I'm sorry, but it's true. We've been following the trail of bodies you've been leaving around the city."
"No, no no! I didn't kill anyone! It was a hallucination, the drugs did it, not me!"
She began to sob loudly and plead for help.
"I'm sorry," Dean told her, unsympathetically, "but we've got no other choice."
He picked up his machete and she began to scream and beg for her life but Dean took her head off with one quick swing. Mia and Sam both turned away.
After disposing of the body the three of them sat in the Impala trying to come up with their next move.
"I'm just gonna say it," Sam said after a long silence, "Dean, what you did was stupid."
"It was brilliant," his older brother countered, "we never would have caught her otherwise."
Mia said nothing. She agreed with Sam that what Dean had done was completely stupid but she didn't want to aggravate him.
Sam sighed in frustration. "It was reckless, and you need to stop acting like your life means nothing, you still have a few months left, that's no excuse for you to continuously throw yourself into danger at every opportunity."
Dean glared at his brother, "Can we save the lecture for later? We've got an alpha vampire turning innocent girls left and right to deal with right now."
His younger brother shrugged, knowing that the discussion was far from over. "Well, we know where his hunting ground is, that club the girl mentioned, "the Spider" and we've got a name, somewhat. Why don't we just ask around there?"
"It's not good enough, clubs are too loud and packed, we're never going to find anyone who knows anything without…." Dean paused and glanced at Mia who was fiddling with her necklace in the backseat. "Bait."
Her blue eyes widened and she stared up at him. "What?"
"You know 'what'," Dean countered.
"Does 'what' mean you're thinking that I should pose as some helpless girl at that club and see if this vampire comes up to roofie me?"
"Yes, but Sam and I will be there the whole time as back up to take the sucker out. All you have to worry about is just looking pretty and attracting this Deacon dude."
Mia frowned in contemplation for a moment then shrugged, "Okay, I'll do it. But I don't look the type. The last 2 vampires were both blonde, and so were a lot of the victims. This Deacon must have a weakness for blondes. I think' we're going to probably need to get me a blonde wig or maybe-"
"Are you both insane?" Sam suddenly exploded, "Mia you can't seriously be taking his idea seriously?"
She smiled reassuringly at her best friend, "Sam, it's okay, I honestly think it's a good idea. With me as bait we'll be able to see what this vamp is up to, and besides I can handle myself. And even if I can't you guys will be there to help out."
Sam gaped at his brother who replied, "Hey, you heard the lady, she's okay with it."
"I'll be fine," Mia emphasized. "I'm not scared. I just need to get my costume and we're good."
"Why don't you just dye your hair blonde?" Dean suggested.
Mia laughed uncomfortably, "No way. I once dyed my hair black and hated it for the whole two months it took to wash out, there's no way I'm going through that again."
He and Sam stood in front of the club waiting for Mia to come out of the Impala so they could put their scheme into action.
"This is a bad idea," Sam repeated for the fourth time.
"Lighten up, Sammy," Dean clapped his brother on the shoulder, "Mia's a tough girl, she can handle one handsy vampire."
"This isn't about that," Sam replied with irritation in his tone, "this is about you, constantly throwing yourself into dangerous circumstances, and now you've convinced Mia to do the same."
"What the hell are you talking about? She offered to do this, I didn't make her do anything."
Sam scoffed. "Yeah right. You know she still feels like she has to prove herself as a hunter and you knew she'd jump at any opportunity to please you, no matter how dangerous."
Dean was surprised by his brother's retort. Yes, he and Mia had their differences in the past but he thought by now she knew that she was a good hunter and that he trusted her. But looking back he realized why she wouldn't feel that way. He had been acting off lately, running into dangerous situations, and shooting down her ideas. But before he could reply, Mia had walked up to them.
He opened his mouth to reply but felt his jaw almost drop when he saw Mia climb out of the Impala. The blonde wig she'd chosen looked decent on her but it was the scarlet, skin tight, short dress and black heeled boots she wore that got him. She looked incredible, he suddenly realized why the other night he hadn't recognized her, she always managed to clean up well.
"How do I look?" She asked with a hint of insecurity in her tone.
"Perfect," Sam told her with a reassuring nod.
She looked to Dean.
"You look...fine," was all he could muster.
She blushed.
"So you're all set?" Sam asked.
Mia nodded and repeated the plan back to them. She was going to hang around the bar until some guy named Duncan, or Deacon, or Dixon offered to buy her a drink, she'd pretend to drink it, and let him take her home but on their way out, Dean and Sam would inject, interrogate, and then kill him.
"Good luck, kid," Dean said, then pat her head.
She frowned but walked in with a sense of purpose, although in heels that was hard for her portray. The boys followed her in. They watched her brush off a few random guys for about half an hour until a man who fit the description chatted Mia up. The brothers watched closely as the guy offered Mia a drink and she chugged it back, then turned when the man wasn't looking to spit it out. They joked around for a while until the man put his arm around Mia to lead her out of the club.
"Now, now, let's go," Dean yelled to his brother to be audible over the music.
The two of them followed Mia and the vampire out of the club but stayed at a safe distance until Mia could lead him somewhere with less witnesses.
"So what else have you got for me to try?" Mia asked seductively, stumbling into his arms.
The vampire laughed, "Well that depends," he leaned in towards her neck but before Mia could grab the capped syringe hidden in her boot Dean leapt from the shadows to knock Deacon out. However, the vampire was quicker and threw him against the wall.
Mia took this distraction to grab the needle but before she could deliver the blow, Deacon grabbed her wrist and squeezed it until she cried out in pain and dropped it. Sam attempted to grab him from behind but the vampire took off into the night.
"Are you okay?" Sam asked Mia while gently touching her wrist.
"It's fine," Mia winced in reply, shaking off the pain.
Dean groaned loudly; Sam and Mia sprinted over to him and helped him stand.
He gasped before pulling the two of them back down seconds before Gordon opened fire at them. Gordon and his accomplice named Kubrick, continued to fire at the three hunters who ducked behind a parked car.
"I don't understand!" Mia cried out, "I thought he was still in prison!"
"NOT ANYMORE!" Dean cried back over the roar of the bullets.
"We need to split up, all of us will meet back at the motel, okay?" Sam suggested but before they agreed, Dean stood up and exclaimed, "you two, run, I'll distract them!"
He immediately ran into the line of fire, jumped onto a car then leapt onto the ledge of a building. Kubrick followed him while Gordon stalked closer to Sam and Mia's hiding spot.
Sam and Mia exchanged worried glances.
"Be careful!" Mia cried out
"You too!" Sam called back as they sped off in opposite directions.
Gordon charged after Sam but when Mia glanced back to check on Sam she realized Gordon was lying on the ground. She was relieved hoping this meant Sam was safe but when she continued onwards she felt a blow against the back of her head and collapsed. The vampire, Deacon, who had knocked them both out, dragged Gordon and Mia back to his nest.
Meanwhile, Sam burst into the motel room to find his brother watching television.
"Brilliant plan, Dean," Sam exclaimed, out of breath, before his brother could say anything, "running towards the people who want to kill us, just incredible."
"What can I say, I'm a total badass."
"Well you being a badass almost got everyone, including yourself, killed, so I hope you're happy with-."
"Wait, where's Mia?" Dean interrupted, realizing she hadn't arrived behind them.
Sam glanced around the motel room in surprise, "I thought she would have made it back by now, she's a lot faster than me..."
The two brothers exchanged uneasy glances.
"You don't think… Gordon could've…" Sam mumbled, refusing to even finish the idea.
Dean shook his head, "I'm sure she just stopped for pizza or something on the way back. I'll call her cell."
He punched the speed dial key for her number and listened to the phone ring repeatedly but no answer.
"That's weird...It's definitely not dead," Dean announced before attempting to call again.
Sam began to worry.
Mia awoke to the sound of her cell phone ringing the personalized ringtone she'd set for Dean which was AC/DC's Back in Black. She glanced around and began to panic when she realized she'd been chained by her arms to the ceiling of some kind of abandoned store. Strung up beside her were two blonde women who appeared to be unconscious. Across from her and tied down to a table was Gordon Walker, who stared at her irately.
"Your phone has been ringing nonstop for almost half an hour,!" He exclaimed angrily.
Mia blinked in confusion. "What are we doing here?"
"That vampire the three of you were hunting dragged us here. He seems to think you're in transition."
Mia remembered, "Right, he thought I drank the blood he gave me that's why I'm here. He must think I'm gonna join his little love nest."
Gordon rolled his eyes, "Great work, Nancy Drew, how about you think about an escape plan?"
Mia opened her mouth to curse at him but that moment her phone began ringing again with Sam's ringtone and Gordon groaned loudly. "For the love of God turn it off!"
"It may have escaped your notice, psychopath, but I can't exactly reach my phone, can I!?" Mia yelled back in frustration as she shook her arms in their restraints.
"Someone's cranky," the Vampire chided as he walked over to Mia with a bucket of fresh blood. "Drink this, you'll feel better."
Mia shook her head emphatically and refused to drink the human blood.
"Your transformation is taking a little longer than the others, but no matter," He remarked as he fed the two other girls which were now awake, crying and clamouring for the blood. "Soon enough you'll be just as hungry as your sisters."
"Sisters?!" Mia cried.
"We're all family, Mia. We're going to have so much fun together," He replied with an unsettling smile.
"You're disgusting," Gordon spat.
Deacon rounded on him, "You're one to talk about disgusting, Gordon Walker. You're the reason why so many of us have are nearly extinct."
"Good, I'm glad yours is a dying breed. You're all nothing but bloodsucking monsters and that's all you'll ever be."
"It's because of you that hunters wiped out my nest and killed my family, including my daughters."
"You mean, your fang whores,"
The vampire snapped at him, "Watch your mouth. Now how fitting is it that the man who killed my first daughters will be food for my new daughters."
"You make me sick, you and your breed do nothing but spread your disease to humanity and poison people. Sewer rats have more humanity than you," Gordon replied.
Deacon shook with anger and turned to Mia and the other captives. "I'm sorry girls but Dad's gonna go out to get your dinner. I have a better idea for Mr. Walker."
He grabbed Gordon's hunting knife and slit his wrist before slitting his own and pouring his blood into the wound as Gordon cried out.
Mia stared in awe. It was almost poetic justice that Gordon was becoming the thing he hated most in the world. She watched Gordon's transformation in disbelief.
After two hours the boys were full on-panicking.
"How did Gordon even know where to find us?" Sam exclaimed.
Dean groaned. "Bela called this morning to check in, I bet she tipped off Gordon."
He called her back and a cheerful British voice answered. "Oh hello Dean."
"Hello Bitch,"
"Already to the insults, are we? What did I do this time?"
"You were the one that tipped off Gordon, weren't you? You weren't checking in to see how we were, you were doing what you always do, looking out for yourself."
"You know, that's not the way to talk to someone who gave you thousands of dollars. Besides, there's only one of him and three of you, I thought it would be a piece of cake for you all."
"He took Mia," Dean told her in flat tone.
Bela's cheery tone vanished, "I'm so sorry."
"You're gonna be more than sorry when I get my hands on you, you're going to be dead."
"You're joking," Bela laughed nervously.
"I'm dead serious, sweetheart, you better pray to whatever force you believe in that Gordon hasn't hurt her because if Sam and I find her with so much as one bruise, I am going to find you, and I am going to kill you." He then slammed his phone shut.
Bela called back ten minutes later.
"Look, about the whole 'killing me' thing, I would much rather prefer to stay alive so I'll give you this piece of help. I asked the spirits to track down Gordon and Mia's exact locations and it gave me the address of a store on Front Street, I'll text you the details. Also, as of right now, Mia is alive but the spirits say that's subject to change if you two don't get over there soon."
"You're forgiven, thank you," Dean replied before hanging up and grabbing Sam.
But by the time they got inside they were too late. They recognized the vampire from earlier kneeling in front of the bodies of two decapitated women, sobbing.
Sam and Dean felt a moment of small relief when they realized that neither of the vampire corpses belonged to Mia.
"Just kill me," Deacon pleaded, "I have nothing else to live for."
"Where's Gordon?" Sam asked.
"He left," the vampire sobbed, "he killed two of my daughters, and took the third to who knows where."
Sam and Dean exchanged horrified glances.
"I never should have brought him here," Deacon lamented, tearfully, "I just wanted revenge. I wasn't thinking! I just… I didn't care anymore and now he's taken my family."
Dean glowered at him, "Family?! You kidnapped and tried to turn these girls so they could be your family? That's fucked up, even for a vampire."
"I was alone. Gordon killed my nest and left me alone, you have no idea what it's like. I didn't want to be alone anymore. And I would have had my family back if I hadn't been an idiot and turned Gordon into a vampire to torture him."
Sam did a double take, "You what!?"
"Great, what's worse than a bloodthirsty psychopath but a bloodthirsty psychopath with fangs!" Dean exclaimed angrily as he pulled out his phone.
"What are you doing?" Sam asked.
"I'm calling Mia, I bet she managed to escape Gordon and is on her way to us," Dean said with more hope in his voice than Sam could bear.
Back in Black began playing loudly and Dean looked down to see his friend's phone ringing. Wherever she was, Mia was without her cell.
Mia awoke on a cold, metal floor. She sat up slowly and rubbed her head, trying to remember where she was and how she'd gotten there. The last thing she could recall was watching Gordon break free of his restraints back at Deacon's place. She deduced from the painful ache at the back of her head that she'd been knocked out and kidnapped...again.
She groaned to herself as she sat up. Gordon sat in the corner of the room watching her, his eyes bloodshot.
"What happened?" She asked in a daze..
"I killed them," Gordon replied, he shook slightly while he spoke, "I killed those vampire girls, Kubrick, and I killed a bunch of innocent people while I was taking you here. I just... lost control. But I can make it right, I can fix things before I kill myself."
Mia's eyes widened. "What are you talking about? Where are we?"
"Abandoned factory by the looks of it," he answered, " I had to get out of the sun…"
He was silent for a moment then continued, "The only good thing about all of this is that with my super strength and heightened senses, I can finally do what I've been trying to do all along… Kill your boy, Sam."
Mia groaned loudly, forgetting that this man could snap her like a toothpick, "Will you give it a rest with the "Sam Winchester Must Die" bullshit? He's not the antichrist, he's not a demon, just because he can tell the future doesn't mean he's a monster!"
Gordon stood. "The only reason I haven't killed you yet is because I know the Winchester brothers will drop everything to come save you, and that will force Sam to face me so I can put him down once and for all."
"You're insane!" Mia cried out in exasperation and Gordon sped to her.
"Listen little girl, I can rip you apart like a piece of paper if I want and I can do the same to your friends." He hissed and Mia suddenly felt a wave of fear.
Dean slammed the motel room door, causing Sam to jump.
"I've checked everywhere," Dean exclaimed angrily, "and we're running out of daylight, in a few more hours, Gordon will be able to move again, and who knows if Mia is still with him."
Sam sighed, "I know. I've checked the other half of town, myself. I called Bobby, Ellen, and Bela to see if they could track his whereabouts or give us his phone number but they got nothing. Bela says 'the spirits are angry at her' so she couldn't find Mia or Gordon."
Dean punched the wall angrily. "WHERE DID HE TAKE HER"
Sam nodded at his brother sympathetically, "I know, I'm scared for her, too."
Suddenly, Mia's phone rang. The boys exchanged hopeful glances. Sam picked it up, warily.
"Mia's phone."
"Oh, um, hello," a confused male voice chuckled, "is Mia there?"
"No she's uhhh, not able to come to the phone right now, can I help you?"
"I was just looking for Mia, I got worried because she hasn't answered my texts since yesterday and I know how precarious this line of work can be so I wanted to check in."
Sam's eyes widened in realization, "Is this Peter?"
Dean looked up from the window, recognizing the name. He mouthed for Sam to put the phone on speaker and his brother complied.
"Who's asking?" Peter inquired hesitantly.
"Sam Winchester! Listen, do you know anything about Gordon Walker?"
"I've run into him a couple of times, very disagreeable fellow. But one of my mates worked with him on a case a while back. Why do you ask?"
Sam explained that Gordon was trying to kill him, had taken Mia and had been turned into a vampire so they had no idea what he was capable of doing to her.
Peter's voice became panicked, "And you've looked everywhere?"
Dean groaned, "No we didn't think of it... Of course we have! We've turned this town upside down looking for her and we're out of options!"
Peter was silent after Dean's reproach.
"Do you think your friend, the one that worked with Gordon on a case might have his number? We can't seem to find people who know it," Sam said in a gentler tone.
"One moment, I'll ask him," Peter answered.
There was distorted mumbling for a few minutes until Peter picked up his phone again and gave them the hunter's number.
"Thanks man," Dean replied, "we owe you one."
"Please, just, find her and make sure she's okay." Peter pleaded.
Sam dialled Gordon's number and held his breath in anticipation.
"I was wondering how much longer I'd have to wait for you," Gordon chuckled, "if it weren't for the damn daylight I would have gotten to you already."
"Where's Mia?" Sam countered angrily, "if you've done anything to her I swear I'll kill you-
"Sam!" Mia's panicked voice came through on the other side, "please, whatever he tells you, don't listen. He's just going to kill me anyways-"
There was a resounding slapping noise and Mia cried out in pain before Gordon spoke, "I'm just about ready to kill this girl if you don't get here in time. I'm in the factory along the other side of the riverbank. 140 Yew Drive. You have until nightfall, or I'm slitting her throat and coming after you myself."
Gordon hung up. The boys exchanged horrified looks before darting into the Impala and dashing off into the setting sun.
Mia clutched her stinging cheek from the slap Gordon had given her for telling Sam that he didn't plan on sparing Mia at all. This would ruin his plan if the Winchesters didn't show up, he had to separate them so he could face Sam alone.
"You have been a pain in my ass for as long as I can remember," Gordon began in a low, menacing voice as he stalked closer to Mia who was backing away from him, still clutching her cheek.
"It's your fault I didn't kill Sam months ago, and it's your fault the gates to Hell opened because of this. Now I'm finally going to make things right again."
Mia felt genuine fear as she saw Gordon's fangs descend. This was it… There were no secret weapon hidden up her sleeve, no exorcisms or journals that could save her. Even if Sam or Dean was seconds away they wouldn't be able to stop Gordon from draining every drop of blood from her body in time. She felt her voice hitch in her throat.
Gordon leaned towards Mia who screamed in terror and kicked him in the stomach as hard as she could with her heel. The vampire was taken aback and his hesitation allowed her to sprint to the end of the factory where she could see a door outlined in sunlight. If she could just get to that door she was home free! Gordon wouldn't be able to follow her outside while the sun was still setting!
But she wasn't quick enough to outrun the vampire who suddenly appeared in front of her and picked her up by her neck, effectively choking her. She kicked her legs furiously, fighting until her last breath.
"I'm going to enjoy this," He whispered menacingly before throwing her body back to where he'd been keeping her.
Mia cried out in pain, feeling as though she'd broken every bone in her body before Gordon's face appeared above her and ripped the skin from her neck. She screamed louder than she'd ever been able to scream as Gordon drained her life. He ripped her necklace off in order to keep it out of the way. The last thing Mia saw before passing out was her own hand reaching out to grab the necklace as she prayed that Gordon wouldn't be able to kill Sam.
Sam and Dean entered the factory with their guns out. It was now nightfall and they knew that Gordon had the advantage. They entered the factory and called out for their friend.
They stepped towards the back of the building when they noticed a trail of blood leading around the corner. There on the ground, lying with her head twisted to the side was Mia. She looked like a discarded and broken doll with her limbs splayed in awkward directions, outlined in a pool of her own blood. Her neck looked as though it had been shredded open by an animal. The blonde wig had come off during her escape and tendrils of her brown hair now framed her snow white face.
"Mia!," Sam cried out, "No, no, no." He dove next to her.
Dean knelt beside Mia and grabbed her arm. As he drew it close, her necklace fell from her fingers onto the ground. She was as cold as ice and he couldn't find a pulse no matter how hard he tried.
"She's… she's dead," Dean said to Sam, as he choked back tears, "Gordon… he killed her."
The brothers began to shift. Sam, who'd been calm and collected during their search for Mia because he believed that she could fight off Gordon and come back to them, snapped. Whereas, Dean who'd been furious the entire time froze. It had dawned on him that Mia's death was his fault, if he hadn't run into danger so recklessly Mia wouldn't have been caught.
"I'LL KILL YOU, I'LL KILL YOU GORDON YOU BASTARD, WHERE ARE YOU?!" Sam screamed furiously as he took off into the bowels of the warehouse, his machete unsheathed.
"Sam, wait!" Dean called after him, he released Mia's hand but while doing so he noticed her fingers curl and uncurl.
Suddenly, her eyes flew open. An eerie blue light began to emit from them, as though someone had stuck a cyan coloured flashlight behind them.
"What the hell?" Dean remarked.
He checked her wrist again and this time he felt the faintest pulse.
"SHE'S ALIVE, SHE'S ALIVE!" Dean screamed into the darkness of the warehouse.
He immediately scooped her up without thinking, just relieved she was still alive, and sprinted to the Impala but suddenly he felt conflicted; Mia was dying and needed a hospital but his brother had taken off after a psycho killer alone.
Suddenly his phone rang and although he contemplated answering, he picked up.
"Dean, what's happened!?" Peter demanded. "Sam called me with the address and I'm almost there. Is Mia okay?"
"Yes, she's alive but barely, I'm about to drive her to the hospital, but Sam went after Gordon on his own, he needs help."
There was silence on the line for a moment and Dean thought he could hear a car accelerating in the background. "I'll help your brother, I'm two minutes away, take care of Mia."
Dean didn't need to be told twice, having already thrown Mia into the passenger seat he leapt in after her. As they sped onto the highway, he felt her head lean against his thigh. It was as cold as death.
He had no idea what was going on with her eyes glowing, or how her pulse had suddenly picked up but part of him was hopeful. Another part of him feared that there was no way she could survive this. No person could survive nearly losing all the blood in their body. She'd be dead regardless of how fast he made it to the hospital.
He drove quickly with anxiety mounting until he felt her stir against his thigh and relief washed over him.
"Mia, are you awake?"
She mumbled something incoherently and tried to sit up but could barely even lift her head. Her eyes gazed up at his face as he sped down the highway, he was relieved that her usual blue eyes were present and not the eerie glow.
Mia felt safe knowing that Dean was with her. Just seeing the fear in his eyes as focused on the road she felt protected and secure. In that moment she knew he loved her, just as he loved Sam. She was part of his little family now and just like his brother, he'd kill for her. Somehow knowing this brought her some peace in dying.
"Hold on, Mia, just hold on, we're almost there," He begged as he watched her eyelids flutter shut.
Mia awoke with a start and sat up in bed. She nearly leapt up as though she'd been electrocuted.
Sam who sat reading a book nearby jumped up from his chair in surprise.
"I guess that shot of adrenaline did the trick."
"GORDON!" Mia shrieked, her memories came back to her. "He-he attacked me, I couldn't get away!"
Sam reached over and hugged her, "Don't worry, it's alright. Are you feeling okay? Does anything hurt?"
Mia shook her head although she was lying her entire body was sore with every movement and her neck felt like it was on fire.
"I thought-I thought I was done for, what happened? How did I get here?"
Sam looked away, and it became apparent to Mia he was hesitant on telling her anything, likely thinking she was too weak to handle anything.
"I'm fine honestly. I'm just really confused." She explained.
Sam sat on the edge of her bed, took a deep breath and explained what he and Dean had done once they got separated after being set upon by Gordon and his accomplice. When he got to when they arrived at the warehouse, Mia sat up again, intent on hearing what had transpired.
"When I saw you like that, all bloody and broken, I wanted to kill Gordon. I wanted to make him suffer for hurting you," Sam continued, fury strong in his tone, "I hated him so much I took off before Dean could tell me that you were still alive. I just wanted to tear him apart, and I did."
Mia was silent. "Good," she muttered after a while, grateful the man who'd nearly killed her and her best friend, was dead.
Sam suddenly looked sad, "I'm so sorry, Mia. I was so caught up in wanting to kill Gordon I didn't come back to check on you. If Dean hadn't seen your fingers move, he wouldn't have taken you to the hospital, he would have run after me and you'd be-" He broke off.
Mia hugged her friend, "Sam, I'm just so glad you're okay. I couldn't deal with losing you twice, I didn't want you or Dean to come for me because I was terrified Gordon would kill both of you."
Sam shook his head, "You're nuts if you think we wouldn't try to help you."
"I'm just glad you're both okay-wait, where's Dean?" She asked, realizing he wasn't in the room.
"I think he's at the food court with Peter, they mentioned something about coffee before they took off."
"Peter's here?"
"Yeah, he was worried about you. He kept calling when you went missing and I kept him updated on what was happening. Right after Dean left to take you to the hospital he showed up to help me take down Gordon."
Mia sat back in disbelief.
Sam smiled, "He really cares about you Mia, he refused to leave your side when he got to the hospital, he hasn't been sleeping."
She was flattered to see how much Peter liked her and felt gratitude for his admiration and even pride to hear that he'd helped Sam out.
Sam smirked and bet that if it hadn't been for massive blood loss Mia would have been blushing.
"Bobby's freaking out, but he's on his way over," Dean announced as he walked into the room without looking up from his cell.
"Dean!" Mia exclaimed happy to see her other friend.
He looked up in surprise to see her struggling to open her arms for a hug.
"Don't hurt yourself, here" He half laughed as he hugged her back, "I'm so glad you're okay. There were a lot of points I thought we'd lost you, but you're harder to kill than Michael Myers."
She grinned, "Thank you for getting me here fast, and thank both of you for coming after me. I don't know where I'd be without either of you."
"Probably a hell of a lot safer," Dean joked.
Mia smiled and lay back down, feeling extremely dizzy and winded from hugging and talking.
Peter came in after and nearly dropped his coffee when he saw Mia.
"You're awake!" He cried out and ran to her side and hugged her tightly then kissed her forehead.
"Careful," warned Sam, "she's still pretty weak."
Dean tapped his brother's shoulder and motioned for them to leave the couple alone. The two of them walked into the hallway.
"What did you want to tell me?" Sam asked, "that needed to be said in private?"
Dean stared at Sam, "Something happened, with Mia… After she came back."
"Yeah?" Sam's eyes narrowed.
"Her eyes, they started glowing."
"That's very poetic Dean but I don't think-"
"Not like that! They opened and turned blue then started glowing like the shapeshifters' eyes in those video tapes."
Sam crossed his arms defensively, "Are you suggesting… she might be a shapeshifter?"
Dean shook his head, "It doesn't fit, that necklace she wears is pure silver, she'd be covered in burns if she even touched it and when we found her she was holding it in her hands."
Sam and Dean stared through the doorway of Mia's room where Peter was talking to her animatedly while stroking her smiling face.
"But if she isn't a shapeshifter then…..what is she?"
