chapter 4 – a memory and diagon alley
Chapter 5 – a train ride to remember.
Kurama stood with the others, looking around Kings cross station in confusion.
Grasped in his hand was a ticket which he had been checking over for what must have been the eighteenth time.
London to Hogwarts
Platform 9 ¾
The ticket was very simple, clearly stating the platform and destination but that was it. How you got to the platform was a complete mystery, especially as everything pointed to platform 9 ¾ being made up.
Kings cross was unmistakably a London station. Some of the walls were hidden beneath layers and layers of graffiti. Bags of rubbish and loose cans were packed into every corner, filling the air with a strong stench that normal humans were lucky enough to miss.
Occasions like this were the only times that Kurama wished he was born a normal human instead of a demon in a human body.
When he had been born it hadn't been so bad, his sense of smell, whilst being slightly better than average, was at a human level.
However, as he had grown up his spirit energy had returned, increasing his senses until they were at the same level they had been as Yoko.
Kurama wondered if Harry was waiting for them on the platform or if, like them, he was wondering around in confusion.
Glancing at the clock he was glad they left early. They'd been wandering around between platforms 9 and 10 for half an hour now.
They only had 30 more minutes before the train left the station and with it their chance of ever seeing Yusuke again.
"-Packed with muggles, of course-" His head jerked round sharply, turning to face the direction the voice had come from.
The speaker appeared to be a plump woman who was talking to four boys, all with hair the same shade as Kuwabara's.
Each of them was pushing a trunk, emblazoned with the Hogwarts crest, in front of him. They even had an owl.
Kurama elbowed Hiei before nodding at the strange family and starting to push his own trunk after them.
The red heads continued down the station before stopping in front of one of the brick dividers between platforms 9 and 10.
Kurama pulled back slightly so that he was within hearing distance, letting the others catch up to him.
He motioned for them to stay quiet before setting his eyes back on the family.
"Now, what's the platforms number?" Asked the boys' mother.
"Nine and three-quarters!" piped a small girl, also red headed, who was holding her hand. "Mum, can't I go..."
"Your not old enough, Ginny, now be quiet. All right, Percy, you go first."
What looked like the oldest boy marched towards platforms nine and ten. They watched, being careful not to blink in case they missed it – but just as the boy reached the divide, a large crowd of tourists came swarming in front of him, and by the time the last rucksack had cleared away, the boy was gone.
"Fred, you next," the plump woman said.
"I'm not Fred, I'm George," said the boy. "Honestly, woman, call yourself our mother? Can't you tell I'm George?"
"Sorry, George, dear."
"Only joking, I am Fred," said the boy, and off he went. His twin called after him to hurry up, and he must have done, because a second later, he had gone – but how had he done it?
Now the third brother was walking briskly towards the ticket barrier – he was almost there – and then, quite suddenly, he wasn't anywhere.
With a sigh, Kurama beckoned at the others to follow him, before heading towards the woman who had just turned to face the last of her sons.
"Excuse me," He started, attracting her attention.
"Hullo, dear," she said. "First time at Hogwarts? Ron's new, too." She pointed at her last and youngest son. He was tall, thin and gangling, with freckles, big hands and feet and a long, dirty nose.
"Could you please explain how to get onto the platform?" He gestured in the direction her other son's had disappeared in.
"Not to worry," she said. "All you have to do is walk straight at the barrier between platforms nine and ten. Don't stop and don't be scared you'll crash into it, that's very important. Best do it at a run if your nervous. Go on, go now before Ron." He nodded, exchanging shrugs with Hiei before turning back towards the divider and starting to push his trunk towards it.
The wheels of the trolley squeaked and wobbled in complaint as he started to speed up, running at the barrier.
The divider got closer, and closer, and an unsettling feeling started to grow in his abdomen.
He closed his eyes, waiting for the crash...
It didn't come... he kept running... he opened his eyes.
A scarlet steam engine was waiting next to a platform packed with people. A sign overhead read Hogwarts Express, 11 o'clock. Kurama looked behind him and watched as the last of his friends exited the barrier, opening their eyes to gaze in wonder at their surroundings.
Smoke from the engine drifted over the heads of the chattering crowd, while cats of every colour wound here and there between their legs. Owls hooted to each other in a disgruntled sort of way over the babble and the scraping of heavy trunks.
The first few carriages were already packed with students, some hanging out of the window to talk to their families, some fighting over seats.
Kurama led the way to one of the emptier carriages at the back, entering and picking an empty compartment. He held the door open for the others, before sitting down next to the window whilst Jin, Toya and Hiei put away their trunks.
So far there was no sign of Harry but the train had yet to leave the station and they had the whole journey to meet up with him again. Talking about which...
"What did you think about Harry?" He inquired once the others were all seated. It was a topic they had all talked about often, comparing similarities but now there was only a few minutes left before they met up with him again. Glances were exchanged.
"It's definitely possible that he could be Yusuke," Started Toya with a thoughtful expression, that was out of place on his eleven year old face. "His wand did include a spirit beast talon. Mr. Ollivander did say that meant that he must have once had a spirit beast or the wand wouldn't have accepted him. I didn't see any spirit beast with him so that's a start I suppose."
Jin grinned.
"I liked 'im, meself. Reminded me of Urameshi, that's for sure." There was a pause whilst they all tried to figure out what there excitable friend had just said. Eventually they all nodded in agreement.
A sharp whistle from the train interrupted their conversation, declaring the train ready to leave.
A puffing sound started as the wheels started to turn, slowly at first, then gradually picking up speed.
They turned to the window, watching as the station slowly started to move away.
The red headed girl from earlier, Ginny, was running after the train, tears evident in her eyes as the train out-sped her, leaving her standing at the corner of the station.
"He didn't look strong enough if you ask me, not to mention he was shorter than the shrimp." Kuwabara announced, starting the conversation again and receiving a death glare from Hiei.
"Looks can be deceiving, Kuwabara," Kurama replied, struggling to restrain Hiei. "Besides height depends on genetics, not passed lives. We'll just have to..."
He was interrupted by a knock on the door, which was opened to reveal non other than the topic of their current conversation.
"Nice to see you again." Harry smiled, seating himself next to Jin. "Did I miss something?" He asked, tilting his head to the side as he watched Kurama, now joined by Toya, struggling to restrain an angry Hiei whilst Kuwabara cowered in the corner.
"Nothin' special."
Harry laughed along with Jin, watching as Kurama and Toya slowly succeeded in pacifying Hiei.
Yusuke hadn't let Harry have control of his body since they had woken up this morning, which naturally lead to many extreme headaches which unfortunately happened to be felt by both of them.
This wasn't an uncommon occurrence.
In fact, this had happened nearly every day since they had both found out about Harry being a wizard, the only difference being that the other day's Harry had been in control, not Yusuke.
Kimori, the name that Yusuke had insisted on for the kitsune, didn't seem to mind, that for all intents and purposes her owner seemed to have split personality disorder. Though she seemed to have a much stronger connection to Yusuke, despite having spent more time with Harry.
This confused both of them but neither brought it up in conversation, preferring to argue over control.
Yusuke was being extremely insistent that he have control of their body whenever they were around his friends which Harry had been fine with for the thirty seconds before he realized that if they ended up in the same house, this meant he would be in the metaphorical 'back-seat' for most of the school year, almost as if he was the extra soul instead of Yusuke.
They were having this very argument, as it happens, in the taxi to Kings cross.
"Yusuke, you can't have control during class. They're meant for me, not you."
"So? You'd still know what was going on, wouldn't you? It would just mean it's me doing all the work. At least I will actually do the work. Your more likely to retreat into your own little world, leaving everyone else to do the work."
"I would not. This is different from a muggle school. It's magic! How can you expect me not to pay attention when it's magic?"
"I'll make a deal with you. Whenever you stare into space in class I'll take over."
"But..."
"It's that or I get control all the time. I don't have to take your opinion into consideration, you know. My will's stronger than yours."
And that was that. Begrudgingly Harry agreed to the deal, more than aware that Yusuke was correct.
He was allowed momentary control to pay the taxi driver, as Yusuke didn't quite understand English money, before he was pushed to the back of their mind again.
Upon entering the station, however, both Harry and Yusuke agreed that he would have control whenever they were at kings cross.
Yusuke's spirit energy naturally increased his senses, meaning that in places like this their nose was assaulted by the stench of alcohol and an over excess of rubbish.
He concentrated on pushing the trolley, currently baring his trunk, towards the barrier Professor Mcgonagall had mentioned. Every time he passed over a loose flagstone the trolley and it's contents would lurch forward and he would receive a yelp of protest from Kimori, who was perched precariously on top of their trunk in a kitty carrier.
Kimori hadn't changed much since her rescue. She still shied away from strangers, which was anyone but Yusuke/Harry.
Her two tails still wrapped around her protectively when she was scared or asleep and she still refused to stray to far from her owner.
Not that they had been expecting her to change in a month, they had just been hoping for some sort of sign of improvement.
They had momentarily been stunned into silence upon arrival at the station, before Yusuke grew impatient and started heading towards the train.
When he struggled to lift the trunk onto the train without the use of his spirit energy, Yusuke forced Harry into vowing that he would start working out in the mornings.
No host of Yusuke's was going to be a weakling. He had excused it at the Dursleys because they hadn't had much opportunity for any type of training other than running practise but from now on that was going to change.
In the end he had to employ the help of a pair of twins to get the trunk on board. He didn't want to use his spirit energy for something so trivial.
He remembered passing them on the way to the train as the conversation he had accidentally eavesdropped on had made him want to laugh.
"Ron, you've got something on your nose."
The youngest boy tried to jerk out of the way, but she grabbed him and began rubbing his nose.
"Mum – Geroff." He wiggled free.
"Aaah, has ickle Ronnie got somefink on his nosie?" Said one of the twins.
"Shut up," Said Ron.
"Where's Percy?" Said their mother.
"He's coming now."
An older boy came striding into sight. He had already changed into his billowing black Hogwarts robes and Yusuke noticed a shiny silver badge on his chest with the letter P on it.
"Can't stay long, Mother," he said. "I'm up front, the prefects have got two compartments to themselves -"
"Oh, are you a Prefect, Percy?" said one of the twins, with an air of great surprise. "You should have said something, we had no idea."
"Hang on, I think I remember him saying something about it," said the other twin. "Once -"
"Or twice -"
"A minute -"
"All summer-"
"Oh, shut up," said Percy the Prefect.
It was then they had noticed Yusuke struggling with the trunk and had ditched their mother to help.
After that it was a simple case of tracking down his friends spirit energy, not a hard task in the mix of weak energies that belonged to other students.
Unfortunately he had gotten on near the front and his friends were near the back. This was plenty of time for him to learn to keep his head down if he didn't want people constantly stopping him to ask if he was Harry Potter, which of course he was, he just didn't like that they all knew that.
During the last month, he had plenty of time to read his school books plus the extras he had brought at the wizarding bookshop.
It hadn't taken him long to realize that in this world he was famous for something he had done as a baby and if Harry were on his own he would barely remember anyway. As it was, he did remember but that was besides the point.
Now he was seated by Jin, laughing at his friends antics, the way things would have been for the last eleven years if it wasn't for that damn demon.
"Where do you live?" Kurama asked and Yusuke looked up to see the others watching him.
"Surrey. With my aunt and uncle."
"What about your parents?" Trust kuwabara to ask such a senseless question.
"They were murdered, or at least that's what everybody says. Not that I've asked very many people."
Yusuke stood up, opening his trunk and rummaging around until he found the book he was looking for.
"It's in here somewhere. The tale of the great boy-who-lived." He stated sarcastically, rolling his eyes whilst handing the surprisingly big book to Kurama.
For the second time in half an hour the conversation was interrupted by a knock on the door.
The young red headed boy from earlier was stood in the door next to Hermione and a slightly chubby looking boy he didn't recognize.
"Can I join you? Everywhere else is full." The red head boy was the first to speak, but before anyone could reply Hermione put in her input on the situation.
"According to Hogwarts: A history, that's impossible. The trains charmed so that the number of carriages increases as needed."
Ron, if that was indeed the boy's name, glared at her.
"What are you doing here then?" He demanded rudely.
"I'm helping Neville," she gestured to the boy next to her "to find his toad. He's lost it. Besides, one of my friends is in here." She gestured at Yusuke who had been trying to figure out where he had seen her before.
"Her name's Hermione Granger, the girl from Madam Malkin's." Harry muttered.
Recognition dawned on Yusuke. Yes. She was definitely the girl Harry had been talking to in the shop.
"Hi." He greeted her with a smile.
Hermione seemed to pause for a second.
"You never told me you were famous!" The exclamation seemed to ring a bell for Ron who had been staring at Yusuke in puzzlement since the conversation began.
"Are you Harry potter?" He asked in a quiet voice as though he was asking about some great secret.
With a sigh Yusuke nodded, already spotting where this conversation was heading.
"Do you really have the – you know..."
How stupid is this boy? Yusuke wondered, even as he lifted up his messy fringe so that his scar was in plain view.
"Wow." Ron said in awe.
By now the enchantment on the train must have activated, because there were suddenly three more seats which were taken by the three newcomers, one of whom was looking at him in worship, the second looked as though they wanted to dissect him and find out how he worked and the third looking like he was wishing he hadn't got out of bed this morning, something Yusuke had to say he agreed with completely.
"Your in tons of books you know. You're in Modern magical history, The rise and fall of the dark arts and The greatest wizards of the twenty first century. Do any of you know what house you'll be in?"
"'Ouses?" Jin inquired curiously. The other four appeared to wander about the same thing.
"Didn't you read Hogwarts: A history?" Asked Yusuke in surprise. He had expected Jin, Kuwabara and Hiei not to know but he had expected Kurama and Toya to want to know everything about this new world. "Everyone in Hogwarts belongs to a house, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. If your brave you go to Gryffindor. If your smart you belong in Ravenclaw. The loyal ones go to Hufflepuff and the sly and cunning go to Slytherin."
"You mean evil." Interjected Ron. "There hasn't been a wizard that went bad that wasn't in Slytherin."
"That's just silly." Yusuke replied in annoyance. "They sort us when we're eleven. No ones evil when they're eleven and besides," he paused thinking. "What about Sirius black? According to The Wizarding War of 1981 by Hellia Wartle, Sirius was in gryffindor but he betrayed his friends to go and join Voldemort." Two sets of gasps filled the room at the name but Yusuke ignored them.
"Whatever. He was from a family full of Slytherins, I bet they tainted him. I know I'll be in Gryffindor. My whole families been in Gryffindor." Ron boasted, switching subjects with ease.
"I must admit, I've been asking around and Gryffindor sounds by far the best. What about you?" Hermione questioned turning to face Yusuke.
"Can't say I've thought about it. My parents apparently were in Gryffindor though. Neville?"
The boy jumped and started stuttering over himself, making Yusuke feel slightly guilty for calling on him.
"M-m-my n-nan wants m-me to go t-to Gryffindor b-but I'll p-probably end up in H-Hufflepuff."
Yusuke silently agreed.
The door slid open to reveal a lady pulling a trolley packed with sweets.
"Anything from the trolley, dears?"
"No thanks. Mum made me sandwiches." Ron muttered showing her a soggy looking package.
Neville shook his head looking down at his lap, followed by Hermione who mentioned about her parents being dentists.
Everyone else just ignored her, continuing with their conversation.
The woman was about to leave when Yusuke joined her in the corridor, holding a handful of galleons, sickles and knuts.
"We'll take the lot."
Yusuke was intrigued by the idea of wizarding sweets. They all had strange sounding names; Bertie Bott's every-flavour beans, Drobbles best blowing gum, Chocolate frogs, pumpkin pasties, cauldron cakes and liquorice wands, just to name a few.
Mouths dropped open when he returned and dumped them on the seat, placing the change in his pocket.
"Hungry?" Hermione asked in amazement.
"I'd have to be a bottomless pit to eat all of this. I was planning on sharing." This turned out to be enough of an invitation for Ron who reached out and grabbed one of the frogs.
The others were a little more cautious, observing Ron happily opening his frog before reaching out and grabbing some sweets for themselves.
Yusuke helped himself to a frog. Ron had yet to open his and he was curious about it.
"Watch out for those." Ron warned. "They're enchanted. Oh," He added as an afterthought. "and see what card you've got. I'm missing Agrippa."
Ignoring the oaf, who was quickly catching up to Kuwabara in that regard, Yusuke opened his Chocolate frog. If it weren't for his quick reflexes it would have gone straight through the window. Other than a whistle of acknowledgement from Ron, who appeared to be the only one who was watching at the time, his fast reaction time went unnoticed.
The card Ron had been talking about turned out to be a hexagonal piece of card in the bottom, with a picture and name on the front and a description and date on the back.
The picture was of a man with long silver hair, a beard and half moon spectacles. Written underneath was the name Albus Dumbledore.
He turned over the card so that he could read the description on the back.
Albus Dumbledore, currently Headmaster of Hogwarts.
Considered by many the greatest wizard of modern times,
Professor Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945,
for the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon's blood,
and his work on alchemy with his partner,
Nicholas Flamel.
Professor Dumbledore enjoys chamber music and tenpin bowling.
"What an ending!" Yusuke snorted internally. Out loud he proclaimed:
"So this is Dumbledore." This attracted incredulous stares from Ron and Neville, who couldn't seem to understand how someone didn't know about Dumbledore. Yusuke ignored them in favour of flipping the card over to get a better look at the picture. When he looked, however, Dumbledore was gone. "He's gone."
Everyone sent him an 'are you mad' look, which then switched to Ron with his next out burst.
"Well, of course. You can't expect him to hang around all day, can you?"
"You mean," Started Hermione, who looked positively hungry at the prospect of new information on the wizarding world. "that in this world, pictures move?" Both Neville and Ron nodded. Deciding to give the others a chance to absorb this new information, whilst leaving Harry to do the same, Yusuke went on to question Ron about his life in a wizarding household, something that he was extremely curious about, especially as he would have been raised in one if it were not for the Dark lord.
From there, Yusuke went on to question the boy about his brothers.
"Wish I had brothers." He said wistfully after one answer.
"No, you don't." Replied Ron. "It's horrible. You have to share everything. For example, I've got Charlie's old robes, Bill's wand and Percy's rat." He gestured to the objects in question and Yusuke had to admit they were pretty poor. The robes were dull, patched and more of a murky grey colour than black, the wand was slightly bent with silvery strands of something coming out of the end, whilst the rat in question was fat, missing some hair and a toe and was currently sleepy inside one of the empty Bertie bott's every flavour bean packages. "George told me a spell to turn him yellow once. Want to see?"
"Go on then." Hermione's interest had peaked again, and she was now watching the red head with apt attention.
"A1l right." He cleared his throat before picking up his wand and pointing it at his rat, who he had quickly muttered was called Scabbers. "Sunshine, daisies, butter, mellow." He started, and Yusuke started to get the feeling this was not a real spell. Rather, it was probably one his brother had made up and given to him as a joke. The spells they had tried so far had all had short Latin incantations, not this long chant which seemed more like a nursery rhyme than anything. "Turn this stupid, fat, rat yellow." At first it seemed like it had worked as a small jet of light struck the rat in exchange for a pained squeal. In the end, however, nothing happened.
"I don't think that's a real spell." Yusuke admitted to Hermione's agreement. He brought out his own wand (the one with a spirit beast talon, the other lay waiting at the bottom of their trunk, ready for Harry to collect) and pointed it at one of the stray sweet packages that had yet to be touched. "Wingardium Leviosa" He intoned, flicking his wand in the manner according to the book. Instantly, the packet of Droobles started to float, rising higher and higher until it knocked gently against the carriage roof.
"Woah." Muttered Ron, appreciatively.
"That's one of the charms in our school books." Hermione stated enviously. "I tried it but I couldn't quite get the hang of it."
The rest of the train ride was spent going over spells that they knew, showing the different techniques to each other.
The session eventually dissolved into arguments. Ron and Hermione started it, arguing over the proper pronunciation of an incantation before Hiei and Kuwabara started their own argument, during which both seemed to be refraining from insults they both desperately wished to say but couldn't for some reason. Yusuke sighed. It was hard to believe he had missed this.
He turned his head to stare out of the compartment window which he had at some point moved to sit next to so that he wasn't caught in the middle of any arguments. Neville had looked as though he wanted to do the same thing but was to shy to say anything about it.
Outside the sky was slowly turning purple and little white specks were beginning to show themselves in the early evening.
Looking back at the other occupants of the carriage, he marvelled at the fact a prefect had yet to come and break up the fights.
"Hey guy's!" He called. Momentarily creating a pause in the argument's. "We should be arriving soon. It would probably be best to change before we arrive."
He received nods and a few grateful looks from everyone who had been trying to stop the fighting and the compartment was filled with movement as trunks were pulled down and robes were dragged out to be changed into.
Hermione and Neville excused themselves back to their original compartments where they had left their trunks.
Only when they had left did Yusuke remember that Neville still had not found his toad but for some reason he couldn't bring himself to care.
Instead, he concentrated on changing into his robes and then pacifying Hiei who was complaining about how the uniform looked like a dress and was trying desperately to convince Kurama to let him stay in his cloak, which from his point of view was black like the list asked for and that was what mattered.
By the time they had gotten the small demon into his robes they were pulling into Hogsmeade station or at least that was what the sign had said.
As the train slowed to a halt a voice resounded through the train, signalling the end of the journey: "We will be arriving in Hogsmeade station in a minute. Please leave your luggage on the train, it will be taken to the school separately."
Yusuke followed the others, picking his way through the crowds that were starting to form in the hallways outside the compartments.
He noticed out of the corner of his eye that Ron had stuffed all of the sweets that remained into his overly large robe pockets but didn't say anything.
The train finally stopped and the doors swung open, allowing the throng of students out onto the small station platform. Yusuke shivered as he was met with the cold night air, peering into the darkness for any indication of where they were meant to go.
Then a lamp came bobbing over the heads of the students and Yusuke heard a loud, deep, and friendly voice: "Firs'-years! Firs'-years over here!"
A big smiling face made itself known to them as they approached. Small beetle-like black eyes twinkled with warmth behind a scruffy black beard and equally black mane of hair.
"C'mon, follow me – any more firs'-years? Mind yer step, now! Firs'-years follow me!"
Slipping and stumbling, they followed the large giant down what seemed to be a steep, narrow path. It was so dark either side of them that Yusuke thought there must be a thick barrier of trees there. Nobody spoke much but Neville could be heard sniffling somewhere near the back of the crowd.
"Yeh'll get yer firs' sight o' Hogwarts in a sec," The giant called over his shoulder, "jus' round this bend here."
There was a loud "Oooooh!".
The narrow path had opened up suddenly on to the edge of a great black lake. Perched atop a high mountain on the other side, its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers.
"No more'n four to a boat!" The giant called, pointing to a fleet of little boats in the water by the shore. Yusuke moved to one boat, followed by Hiei, Kurama and Kuwabara whilst Jin and Toya were joined by Hermione and Neville in another. Looking dejected, Ron moved into a third boat with two other boys and one girl.
"Everyone in?" Shouted the giant, who had a boat to himself, "Right then – FORWARD!"
And the fleet of little boats moved off all at once, gliding across the lake, which was as smooth as glass. Everyone was silent, staring up at the great castle overhead. It towered over them as they sailed nearer and nearer to the cliff on which it stood.
"Heads down!" yelled the giant as the first boats reached the cliff; they all bent their heads and the little boats carried them through a curtain of ivy which hid a wide opening in the cliff face. They were carried a long a dark tunnel, which seemed to be taking them right underneath the castle, until they reached a kind of underground harbour, where they clambered out onto rocks and pebbles.
"Oy, you there! Is this your toad?" Asked the giant, who was checking the boats as people climbed out of them.
"Trevor!" Cried Neville blissfully, holding out his hands. Then they clambered up a passageway in the rock after the giants lamp, coming out at last on to smooth, damp grass right in the shadow of the castle.
They walked up a flight of stone steps and crowded around the huge, oak front door.
"Everyone here? You there, still got yer toad?"
The giant raised a gigantic fist and knocked three times on the castle door.
A.N. Finally done. Sorry it took so long. Next chapter, we will have the sorting and Harry/Yusuke will meet Malfoy.
Please remember to review and I hope to post the next chapter sooner.
And for all those who are interested I have an account on Wattpad (My username is still gatomonfan) where I am planning to repost some of my fanfictions (like the prince of the hills) with extra chapters, information, MA scenes, etc. I also have posted my novel on there so that I can receive any criticism on my work before actually looking for a publisher.
Any one that is interested in my novel, there is more information that I will post on my profile and it is called: Magi; Book 1.
