Throughout the school day, Jade avoided me - so here I am walking towards her locker with a worried expression on my face. Jade grabbed her needed books out of her black, scissor-covered locker and was walking to the exit until I stopped her. "Okay what did I do." I said exasperated of not hearing a single word come out of her mouth. "Nothing." She shook her head. "Then why are you avoiding me?" Jade inhaled then opened her mouth to speak. "It's my birthday today and I want to show you something." she looked up at me in determination. "What?" I asked confused. "I'll show you, just drive me back to my house." Jade took my hand and began dragging me out the door. "Happy birthday, but why didn't you tell me earlier?" Jade stopped abruptly at my car and let go of my wrist for me to unlock the doors. "Because it's not a big deal." She shrugged as I began driving; rolling down the windows and feeling the cool air hit my skin each time the stop light is green. Jade sat quietly playing with her fingers, occasionally mumbling a couple of lyrics the radio sang.
I pulled into the driveway and unbuckled my seatbelt, watching as Jade did so too, but slower and less urgent. I locked the doors and went on the side where Jade stood waiting patiently. I gave her a nudge and she slipped out of her daze and gave me a dazzling smile. I felt my crush grow ten-times bigger by the second that happened. I smiled back, wishing she would do that more often; at least when we're alone. A quick picture of Jade and I as a couple came to mine and I gave a small smile to myself. Jade pulled me towards the nearby woods that sat still behind the metal fence. She climbed over it easily, but it's a known fact that I, Beck Oliver, can not climb - so just imagine me in P.E when we're climbing rope. I broke my arm that day.
"What are you waiting for?!" Jade yelled from the other side. I sighed to myself in embarrassment; a girl can climb over a little fence and I can't. "I-um-I can't...climb." I said the last part quietly into my shoulder. Jade stood for a second with a loss of words until cracking a smile then couldn't hold in laughter anymore. Time passed as she finally is able to regain her composer. "Okay, so you need my help?" She teased, a small smile aching at her lips. I rolled my eyes and reluctantly nodded my head. She climbed back to my side of the fence and spoke, "Put your feet in the holes." I shifted my shoes to slightly to adjust and be stable in the small holes. "Now take one of your feet out and wrap it over the fence, and I'll just push you over from there." I did as said and reworded the last part in my head. "Wait, what?!" I got no answer but a push from Jade and a thud from the ground. Jade quickly went over the fence once again and pulled me up; now covered with dead grass. She looked at my grass-covered shirt and, almost distinctively, brushed some of the grass off with her hand. I stopped her mid-rub by lightly grabbing hold of her wrist. We sat in silence, words being passed with our eyes searching for thoughts and emotions. Jade blinked a couple of times while shaking her head and took ahold of my hand once again and headed the direction the thing she wants to show me is.
I brushed passed the leaves tickling my skin just as Jade came to a stop, then turned her head to look at me and gave me a small smile. I stood behind Jade while she moved a rock, causing a tree to bend backwards. She did this to another one and behind the two trees there is an old broken tree house sitting with only a ripped blanket on the bottom creating a tent-like figure under the top part with a ladder to climb in it. There are small windows on each wall and the door is square, directly above the ladder. Jade caught me out of space and lead me to the tent. We sat in comfortable silence. I'm taking in my surroundings when I feel like I've been here before; it's oddly familiar. I nudged Jade and she looked up from carving a block of wood. "This place looks oddly familiar..?" She looked back and proceeded carving the knife in the wood. "I was hoping you'd say that." She said roughly. I furrowed my eyebrows confused of the situation. She quickly opened her mouth to fill me in, "A couple of kids found this place when they were trying to find me and hurt me in first grade. I come here when I feel like running away from everything and every one." She explained. It hit me like a ton of bricks; I've met her before.
The cold winter breeze sent chills down my spine as I followed the other smaller boys from first grade. I trailed behind them through the woods; my friend, Cole, had found it the other day while exploring that weird girl in my class's backyard - Jade West. She always played with scissors and sat at the end of the red table by herself. Everyone doesn't like her, so I figured "why would I?"
The gang came to a halt and Cole turned around whispering, "Look, there she is in a stupid tree house made of trees!" He pointed behind him, causing us all to look around him. There sitting inside a tent was Jade West with a small book in her hands. Just as she turned, yet another, page of the book - Cole opened his mouth saying "Com'on, we can get her." The boys nodded, but I shook my head in confusion. They ignored me and stomped over to the small girl, ripping the book out of her hands. "Give me my BOOK!" Jade was furious. The boys laughed and I only stood and watched as they pounced on her.
Thirty-minutes past when they finally are satisfied by their work. They pushed past me and left the woods saying a quick "Let's go." before leaving me behind. I turned my head back to Jade, now crying softly while picking up the torn pages of her book. Step by step, my legs took me to Jade. I stopped behind her. Jade turned her head toward me once realizing my presence. "What do you want Oliver?" She sniffled trying to stay strong, but failed with her teary eyes. I shrugged my shoulders with a loss of words. I sat down next to her and for a second thought "what am doing?" before hugging her. Her navy eyes shone bright for once and I saw a smile. "Thanks," she pulled away, "But you should go, bad things happen here." She shooed me out of the forest, but I stopped just before exiting.
"I promise I'll talk to you again someday if you promise?" I held out my hand for a shake, seeing my dad do it when they agree.
"I promise." Jade took my hand and we shook.
I never saw her again after that. And later, she was forgotten.
My lips parted do to shock. Jade looked at me with sad eyes. She probably remembered that day like it was yesterday, hoping I'd keep my promise, I thought sorrowfully. "Jade, I'm sorry," She cut me off, "Don't be. You partially kept your promise, but I didn't so I should be the one saying 'sorry' right now." That's when I kissed her. My hands caressed her face and hers' went to my shoulders, slightly tugging at the soft cotton of my shirt. She pulled me closer to deepen the kiss and soon pulled away. She looked confused at me. "What? Did you not like it?" More possibility's of what went wrong came to mind as I stumbled the words out. Jade laughed (cutely) at me then said "No! I just...it feels weird. I mean, why'd you kiss me?!" her hands flailed up and went back down to her sides as she looked at me wide-eyed. I opened my mouth to explain,"Well, for one - you're you. With your big ball of black, curly hair on the top of your head," I tussle her hair making her giggle in response, "Your dry humor, your hidden gold that is surrounded by the cold clumps of coal. So basically, I love you because you're Jade West." Her cheeks are rosy red by the time I'm finished, she opened her mouth and closed it multiple times before letting the words slide out, "You're nice...and I like you because you never let me down, even though we've only known each other for a couple of weeks - not including Kindergarten." I looked at her in awe as she stumbled a little with her words while trying to give a compliment. I gave her a grin and she grinned right back, keeping our gaze on one another. I had a fight with my conscience before saying, "Since you told me a story I'll tell you one now." Jade sat for a second debating, then slowly nodded her head.
"There was a girl in High School and the other kids teased and hurt her physically and mentally, even though she was gorgeous they called her ugly and fat. Now I come in and I'm part of the popular group, those people were the ones who named her as a freak and demon, but I was interested in her instead. She reminded me of a broken piano, she didn't have any friends or anyone who would take care of her. And, being the cocky one I am, I thought of myself as a melodic tune; having everything I could ever want. But later, I took the time to get to know her and become her (only) friend. Then soon, the melodic tune found out that the broken piano was not broken after all, but needed to be played with the right keys. Now I can't stay away from her and the beautiful tune she plays." I gave a small smile and she smiled back with teary eyes. We hugged, kissed, laughed, and Loved.
This is only the beginning.
"The broken piano was not broken after all, but only needed to be played with the right keys."
