Chapter 13: History Review

Kurt was happy. Happy in a way Burt hadn't see since Kurt's mother had died. Now, for some reason, Kurt was smiling the way he used to when he was a child. And for once in his life, Burt had not been given any information from Kurt. All Burt knew was that when Kurt's phone lit up, so did Kurt's face.

It wasn't a bad thing, just new. Ever since his wife Elizabeth's passing, Kurt wasn't the bright little boy he had once been. The ever constant light that shone in Kurt's eyes, had dimmed. Kurt got worse in high school with the bullies, but when he got to New York, Kurt was a new person. Being in New York and living his dreams, brought some light back into his eyes. But then he met that Tyler kid online. To this day, Burt still doesn't understand what Kurt ever saw in that kid. That kid lived in Ohio of all places. Kurt had made it pretty clear that he hated Ohio and only returned to see his dad.

Then Kurt and that kid went out for a date. If a night out in a loud gay bar was considered a date, that is. Kurt came home exasperated and annoyed, but still went out with Tyler again. And again. And multiple times after that. But after each date, Kurt was less like himself, and personally, Burt blamed the Tyler kid one hundred percent. He didn't know exactly what Tyler did, but it was still his fault.

Then came the accident when Kurt was driving home from Tyler's place. So, in Burt's mind, that makes it also Tyler's fault. Then, they broke up and Burt couldn't be more relieved.

And to take the cake, recently, a mysterious stranger that his son had been texting often. Though, Burt had thought that the thing with Blaine would have been nice, he'll take this mysterious stranger if they make his son happy in some way.

Speaking of that stranger...

It was around noon, when Burt was watching TV with Kurt, that he finally asked. Well, when Burt was watching a game and Kurt was trying to watch the game. But Kurt loved his father, so he tried to watch the games, and vice versa, that Burt would watch those fashion shows he didn't really understand. Burt glanced over whenever he heard the phone buzz, which wasn't every minute, but still frequent none the less. After another hour passed the game ended, Burt cleared his throat and said, "So who were you texting?" He tried to act nonchalant, but the curiosity was clear in his voice.

Kurt looked up at his father, his eyebrows raised as if he didn't understand.

Burt looked pointedly at Kurt's phone, which had just lit up. Kurt glanced down at his phone before replying with, "Just a friend."

Burt made a noise of disbelief at the back of his throat. "Kid, I know I'm not the most observant person, but I'm not completely oblivious."

Kurt rolled his eyes. "I know, but I'm telling the truth. It's just a friend."

"Can I have a name for this friend?"

Kurt sighed. "Fine. It's Blaine. Okay?"

Burt nodded. "When did you guys start texting?" He asked.

Kurt shrugged. "Only two days ago. We ran into each other at a coffee shop and exchanged numbers."

Burt smiled. "That's great, Kurt." Burt shifted uncomfortably before asking, "Are you guys, you know, together?"

Kurt shook his head vigorously. "No, no. We're friends."

Burt sighed in relief. "Okay, good. I'm not ready for you to get another boyfriend. Not that it's bad if you did, but I don't lose my son to another man just yet."

Kurt laughed. "Dad, you'll always be number one in my book."

Blaine smiled as another text from Kurt came.

Still sane?

I could as the same of you. Has your Dad applied for that hovercraft job yet?

Just as Blaine put his phone down, another text popped up, this time, from someone else.

Wanna come over? I'm all alone in my house today ;).

Blaine groaned. He had no idea how Sebastian had gotten his number, but ever since he did, Sebastian had been propositioning him daily, if not hourly. It was getting downright annoying. Blaine would've blocked his number, but his stupid phone company would charge him an insane amount to do it. So Blaine just deleted the text just like all the other, and waited for a reply from Kurt. Within a minute, his phone lit up again.

Lately, he's been reconsidering his abilities to become a hovercraft

Blaine let out a laugh and began to text a reply.

Explain please. And I hope for your sake he is.

Blaine looked up when he heard a knock on his door. Blaine said, "Come in," and the door opened, revealing Cooper.

"Hey, Blainey. Whatcha up to?" Cooper asked, leaning on the door frame.

"Just texting a friend." Blaine said shortly.

Cooper grinned. "Would this friend be Kurt by any chance?" He teased.

Blaine blushed and Cooper had his answer. Cooper took a running leap and landed on Blaine's bed, just missing Blaine's toes.

Blaine glared at Cooper. "I should have never told you about running into Kurt at the coffee place."

Cooper sighed. "But alas, you did. So give me the details. Are you together yet?"

Blaine gasped and swatted at his brother. "Coop! We're just friends!"

Cooper rolled his eyes. "Sure, sure. Whatever you say."

Just then, Blaine's phone buzzed. Blaine glanced up in time to see Cooper dive for his phone located near his ankle. Blaine tried to snatch it, but Cooper jumped off the bed and out of the way. Blaine tried to follow, but not before Cooper unlocked his phone and read out the text. " 'Can I ask what you're doing later, because I want to do you.' "

Cooper frowned at the message. "That doesn't sound like the innocent Kurt I know."

Blaine grabbed his phone out of Cooper's hand and huffed. "That's because it's Sebastian."

Cooper got instantly serious. "Woah, since when are you and Sebastian texting? I thought you had gotten a new number because if him, or is that not true?"

Blaine sighed and sat on his bed. "I saw Sebastian the other day at the Lima Bean. He came up to me like nothing ever happened. I walked out, but somehow, he got my number and has been texting me. I don't know how he got my new number, but he did."

Cooper walked over to the bed and sat down. "You can get a new number if you want. Or I could punch him, even if just makes you feel better. I still owe him a good punch for the last time." Cooper said darkly.

Blaine shook his head. "No, I'm fine. I just ignore it." Blaine's phone buzzed with a new message.

Blaine picked it up and read the new message. It was from Kurt this time.

I'm tired of texting. Do you wanna meet up for coffee at the Lima Bean?

Blaine smiled and wrote back.

If coffee is involved, I'll always be up to it. Is 2 o'clock good for you?

"I'll see you for dinner, then." Cooper said, peering over his shoulder at Blaine's phone.

Blaine looked up. "Of course you would read over my shoulder."

Cooper patted Blaine's knee and stood to leave. "You should know me better than that, Blainey. I will always read over your shoulder. Good luck on your date with Kurt." Cooper shouted as he left.

"It's not a date!" Blaine shouted back.

Kurt had just finished styling his hair when Burt knocked on his door.

"Are you going somewhere important, kid?" His father asked, tried to act casual.

Kurt glanced at his father, reflected on his vanity mirror. "I'm just meeting Blaine for coffee."

Burt grunted. "So, is it like a date?"

"No." Kurt dismissed quickly.

Burt's eyebrows furrowed. "I'm sensing something you're not telling me." Burt said.

Kurt straightened his shirt. "It's nothing."

"I don't believe that, Kurt." His father shot back.

Kurt turned around to face his father. "It's nothing I can't handle."

Burt gave Kurt that look that clearly meant that he either spills or never steps foot out of the house again.

Kurt eyed the floor before he spoke.

"Tyler called me the earlier today." He admitted, his eyes still on the floor.

His dad was silent. Silent to the point that Kurt had to look up to make sure his father wasn't having another heart attack.

"What did he say?" His dad asked in a tight tone.

Kurt bit his lip, debating whether or not it was worth it to have his father explode or not. He glanced back to his dad's face, which was growing redder the longer he didn't answer.

"Hecalledtoaskmetogetbacktogether." Kurt rushed out.

"He asked what?" His father's voice edging dangerously.

"He asked me to go back out with him." Kurt repeated, slower the second time.

"And you said..." Burt started.

Kurt rolled his eyes. "I told him that that car accident did not give me enough brain trauma to ever say yes to another date with him."

Burt chuckled, but the fire in his eyes was still present. "That bring me to reason I came up here. Kurt, I'd like to think I know you well, and I do. But I can not, for the life of me, figure out why you even went on one date with that Tyler kid."

Kurt turned back his mirror, pretending to fix his hair.

"Now, I know that I sound like the overprotective father, and I admit I am. But I'm worried for you Kurt. I want you to be happy with your life. But I want you to be honest with me as well. I mean, I didn't even know you had Blaine's number until an hour ago. Now, you're telling me that kid called and had the nerve to ask you out again." Kurt heard his father take a deep breath. "I know that you're getting older and that you don't need me as much, but I still want to be a part of you life. I want to know who your friends are, who your coworkers are, who you hate, who you love; all of it. So I got to ask again: Why did you go out with that Tyler kid?" Burt's pleaded.

Kurt let his hands fall to his sides. "Dad, I'll always try to be honest with you. But that's all I can do right now."

He heard his dad sigh and leave. Kurt took a deep breath to calm himself. He walked to his dresser, grabbed his keys, and was out the door as quickly as he could be, not letting his father ask any more questions he didn't want to answer.

Blaine was already in at a table with two coffees and biscotti when Kurt arrived.

"Next time, I buy the coffee." Kurt said as he sat across from Blaine.

Blaine laughed. "Sure."

Kurt smiled. "So anything interesting happen lately that I wasn't told about via text?"

Blaine shifted uncomfortably. "Nope. Cooper is still Cooper and I haven't gone anywhere. But I was thinking about going back my apartment. But that is a topic for a later date. What about you? Your dad still hovering?"

Kurt stared at him, afraid that he somehow knew about the conversation he had earlier with his dad. Kurt took a moment before answering carefully. "I've been to work yesterday to grab a few things. And yes, my dad is hovering, but not as much as he has been lately and I will ask about that apartment later." Kurt added with a glare.

Blaine frowned. "Wait, you went back to work already? Did your boss not know about you being injured? Or do they not care if you're hurt?" Blaine asked angrily.

Kurt shook his head. "No, no. It's nothing like that. My boss gave me all the time I needed. It was actually her that keeps begging me to stay home and heal."

Blaine's anger faded from his voice. "I think your boss is right. Also, sorry. About jumping down your throat about your boss. I've known one too many bosses who would make people work while they were still injured" Blaine clarified.

Kurt shrugged. "It's fine. What about you? Have you got a job to go back to?"

"Not yet. I got a job as a teacher for this fall, though." Blaine said proudly.

Kurt smiled widely at the news. "That's amazing! What are you going to teach?"

"Music." Blaine said dreamily.

Kurt watched as his friend stared off into space, clearly happy with his future. Kurt was happy for him, but he also knew that seeing Blaine would be harder if they were in two different states and two demanding jobs. Kurt's eyes fell to his coffee cup. He loved having Blaine as a friend and he didn't want to lose him to a silly thing like distance.

"Kurt, are you okay?" Blaine's worried voice asked.

Kurt snapped his eyes up where Blaine was looking at him, clearly concerned.

Kurt nodded jerkily as he cleared his throat. "Yeah. Just... spaced out for a moment." Kurt lied.

Blaine looked at Kurt closely, trying to figure out what was bothering him, but he found nothing. Kurt took a long drink of coffee before asking, "What level of music will you be teaching?"

Blaine's smile returned. "High school for now. Later, I might go for lower levels, but I'll take what I can."

Kurt smiled at the picture painted in his mind. Blaine was totally going to be that teacher that all the girls swooned over and then the teacher all the little kids would love.

"I can see it." Was all Kurt said.

"So what about you? What about your job? What do you do?" Blaine pressed.

"Well," Kurt drawled out. "Right now, I work at this small shop near Columbus, fixing clothes and helping people that come to us for advise." Kurt ended.

"What kind of people are we talking about? Old, young, rich, poor?" Blaine asked.

"All kinds of people. From an old lady wanting to try something new, to a young man trying to impress his girlfriend." Kurt explained.

"How long have you worked there?"

"Just for the summer."

"Are you going to school in the fall then?" Blaine asked, confused.

"Oh no. I graduated this past year. I just have another job in place for me later. This job is mostly for experience and income." Kurt explained.

Blaine nodded in understanding. "Where did you go to school at?" He asked.

"Originally, I wanted to go to NYADA, but after a a year, I realized that I was focused more on the clothes the actors were wearing rather than the actors themselves. So, I decided to transfer to Parsons. I graduated with a fashion degree from Parsons, rather than a performance degree from NYADA. Either way, I was in New York, which was great." Kurt answered.

"Wow. When did you graduate?" Blaine asked.

"Just last May. What about you?" Kurt questioned.

"My story is less exciting. I went to NYU for musical education and graduated last May with a musical education degree." Blaine said.

"That's still amazing." Kurt insisted.

"So are you going to go back-" Blaine's question was cut off when Kurt's phone went off with the song 'Gives You Hell'.

Kurt managed not to roll his eyes at the timing. He was just going to ask Blaine where he lived right after Blaine finished his question. Kurt grabbed his phone out of his pocket and was about to ignore the call when he caught the screen name, 'Rachel.'

"I'm sorry, but if I don't answer, she'll just keep calling and texting." Kurt desperately tried to explain.

Blaine just laughed and said, "It's fine. We all have friends like that.

Kurt smiled and answered. Immediately, Rachel was off.

"Kurt, I need your help. I was walking around our building trying find that coffee place you always told me was so good, but I couldn't find it. So I asked this guy for directions and after he helped me, he asked me out! Can you believe it? I knew it was only a matter of time until I was approached, but still! His name is Jesse St. James and he is a total dreamboat. I know we had some history, but he has totally changed, I swear! He even gave me his number so I could call him and we go on a date! Isn't that wonderful?"

Kurt took a minute to get used to the force that was Rachel Berry. He sighed and answered, "That's great Rachel. But wasn't he the one who transferred schools to 'be with you' then pelt you with eggs with all his friends from a rival show choir?"

Blaine's face was a priceless mixture of curiosity, shock, and slight fear at Kurt's words. Kurt would've laughed, but it was all the truth.

"Yeah, yeah. Water under the bridge. But the reason I called is because I need help picking an outfit for the date." Rachel said.

"Firstly, Rachel, I'm kind of busy right now. Secondly, why did you even say yes?" Kurt tried to reason.

"But Kurt, you're my friend and friends help each other! And right now, I need help! All you have to do is go on Skype and help me choose an outfit. and as for why, I just think I should give him a chance." Rachel shot back.

"Can't you ask anyone else?" Kurt tried.

"No, I can't." Rachel snapped back.

"Fine then. I'll call you in an hour." Kurt gave up.

"An hour!?" Rachel screeched.

Kurt held his phone away from his ear before speaking.

"Yes, an hour. I'm not at home so you'll just have to wait." Kurt answered.

"Why aren't you home?" She demanded.

"I'm out having coffee with a friend. Now hang up so I can get going or it will be two hours." Kurt threatened.

"Okay. Bye." Rachel replied and then soon hung up.

Kurt put his phone down and put his hands to his head to massage his temples. "I'm sorry, Blaine, but my friend has called in an emergency." He apologized.

Blaine shook his head. "It's fine. But I'll only let you go if you promise me two things."

Kurt lifted his head out of his hands. "Okay. What two things would I have to do?"

Blaine smiled. "First, you have to promise that next time we have coffee, only answer your phone if it's your dad. That way, I'll have more time to ask all my questions." Blaine explained.

Kurt nodded. "That's reasonable enough. I have been running out on you a lot." Kurt blushed guiltily. "But what's the other thing?" Kurt asked.

Blaine grinned. "The second promise is to tell me the full story of the rival show choir pelting your friend with eggs."

A/N: Now I have to write the next chapter. *sigh* But I shall do it! Anyway, I am so glad that I kept Sebastian in the story! And yes, both Sebastian and Tyler will have parts in this story. But that's for next time. As always, review, follow, favorite and if you see mistakes, shoot me a PM or something. Thank you!
