Queen of Anything
Bo was standing in a burning room. She had no idea how she got there or even where 'there' was. All she knew was that she was in the middle of a ring of fire as the room around her started to collapse from the burning. She could hear the crackling of the fire. She could feel the heat of the burn. Her heart was pounding. She needed to get out of there. She looked around for a way out but instead saw a motionless body on the floor. The flames were making it harder for Bo to make out the sight before her. She crouched down as the fire burned a beam down to the ground missing the body by inches. She needed to get to the body to see if they were still alive. She needed to help them. Bo took off towards the body. She jumped and dodged the collapsing bits of wood. The closer she got to the body the more the fire burned. She was now close enough to the body to see that it was a girl all in white. She just needed to see the face now. She reached out to the body and hissed in pain as the fire burnt her arm. She quickly retracted her arm. If she was going to help whoever this was she was going to get burnt doing it. Once more Bo reached out to the body but this time she fought through the burn. She screamed in agony as the burn got worse and worse. She was finally able to touch the body and she quickly turned it over. Her heart dropped.
"Kenzi!" She screamed.
"Oh no, no, no." Bo cried out. "Kenzi, please get up." Kenzi was in the center of the burning room unconscious. What happened to her? Why was she there? Bo felt for a pulse. It was weak but it was there. She needed to get them out of there but she didn't know how. There were no doors or windows in this burning room. Her heart pounded as she began to panic.
"Bo." She heard a distant voice say but couldn't see anyone.
"Bo." She heard it again. The flames were growing but she saw a winged figure walking through them. Bo instinctively held on to Kenzi to protect her as the figure came even closer. The figure walked through the flames as if it were nothing. Bo was equally confused and relieved to see Anima only Anima looked completely different. She had a blonde streak in her hair. She was completely naked and if that weren't confusing enough there were two enormous black wings sticking out of her back.
"Anima?" Bo said with all of her fear and confusion dripping from her voice. "What are you doing here? Where is here?"
"That doesn't matter right now." Anima said hurriedly.
"Yes it does if I'm to help Kenzi." Bo began.
"The only way you can help Kenzi is by waking up." Anima said.
"What? We're asleep." Bo asked.
"Not exactly." Anima started. "But just do as I say and only as I say and you will save Kenzi."
"Save her? Is she in danger?"
"Bo she doesn't have time for me to explain everything." Anima interrupted Bo's questioning. Bo nodded in response. "You have to wake up, get to Kenzi and bring her to Lauren's lab. Is that understood?"
Bo nodded again. "But how do I get up? Believe me if I could I would've gotten up from this nightmare by now. Am I supposed to click my heels?" Bo began to ramble. She was terrified and Anima knew this. She was watching as Bo began to panic. This was not helping anyone especially Kenzi so she did the only reasonable thing she could think of.
"I'm sorry about this Bo." She said before she wound up her fist and punched Bo in the face.
"Ow!" Bo said as she held on to her face. When she opened her eyes she was no longer in the burning room. She was sitting upright on her bed in her room. She was back at the clubhouse. Was it all just a dream? Was it even real? She then looked down to herself. She was in jeans and in a black tang top. She must've passed out after a night of drinking with Kenzi. Bo sighed in relief.
"It was just a nightmare." She said to herself. Bo then felt a sharp sting on her right arm. She hissed out in pain. She then turned it over to reveal a fresh burn. "Oh no." She said as her dream became a reality. "Kenzi!" She screamed. She shot out of bed and ran up the stairs into Kenzi's room. Her best friend was curled up in a ball. Bo approached her. Kenzi was shaking and sweating. Bo touched her forehead. Kenzi was burning up.
"Bo." Kenzi mumbled as she shook. "Don't. Leave. Me." She said through clenched teeth.
"I'm not going anywhere." Bo said. She then remembered what Anima said. "You have to wake up, get to Kenzi and bring her to Lauren's lab."
"Alright Kenzi. I'm getting you some help." She said to her unconscious friend. She gently lifted Kenzi off of her bed. She carried her down the stairs, out of the clubhouse and into her Camaro. It was early morning but with any hope Lauren would already be at her lab. Bo quickly dialed her girlfriend.
"Come on please pick up." Bo said as she drove off towards the lab.
"Dr. Lewis." Bo finally heard her girlfriend say on the other end.
"Lauren!" She practically shouted. "It's Kenzi. I need your help."
That was all Lauren needed to hear. "I'm at the lab bring her here now."
"I'm already on my way." Bo said before she hung up.
Back at the lab Lauren had prepared a hospital bed for Kenzi's arrival. She had no idea what was wrong but she would be prepared for the worse. Thankfully it was a slow day for appointments. The few she did have she gave to her intern. She wanted to be completely free to help the only other human in her life. Within five minutes Bo had burst through the lab doors with Kenzi in her arms. Lauren rushed over to them. She noticed that Kenzi was unconscious with a fever and shaking.
"Put her down on the bed now." Lauren said in an authoritative tone. She then called over a few doctors and nurses. Bo backed away and watched her girlfriend work. It was like the other doctors and nurses were a band and Lauren was the conductor. Lauren was giving the commands and everyone else moved as one. They were working intently on Kenzi. They didn't care that she was human. It was one of the perks about working in a neutral clinic. Not all fae looked down on humans and the fae Lauren employed all seemed to believe that. Within seconds Kenzi was hooked to an IV and a few other tubes were sticking out of her body. The nurses had given her injections and serums. She was still unconscious but she was stable. Bo was never more grateful.
After the other doctors and nurses started to clear out Lauren made her way over to Bo. "Bo what happened?"
Bo couldn't tear her eyes away from Kenzi. "I don't know. How is she?"
"I've sent for some tests but I won't know anything for a few more hours." Lauren said. "But there is one thing I need to show you." Bo nodded. Lauren led her over to Kenzi. She was now in a hospital gown. She didn't look as if she was in so much pain. Lauren then gently took Kenzi's arm and lifted it up revealing what looked like an inflamed rash.
"What is that?" Bo asked worriedly.
"I'm not sure." Lauren answered. "It is not just an ordinary rash. It is most definitely fae but that is as much as I can tell you without the results from the skin swab. Bo she must've had this for weeks if not a few months. Have you never noticed it before?"
Bo shook her head. "I mean she was scratching at her arm the night of the masquerade but she said it was nerves and she's always wearing sleeves."
"Whatever this is" Lauren began gesturing to the rash "it is what is causing her fever. It is a foreign substance trying to make its way into Kenzi's body."
"So you're saying my best friend had that for weeks and I never even noticed?"
"Babe don't blame yourself for this." Lauren said. "We both know if Kenzi didn't want you to know about this than you would have never found out." Bo nodded but didn't believe what Lauren had said. She should have noticed. She shouldn't have let it get this far.
"Can you tell me what happened right before you called me?" Lauren asked.
"I'm not sure." Bo began. "One moment we were sleeping in our rooms and the next we were in a burning room. I don't know how we got there or where we were. I was so scared and confused and then Anima came."
"Anima?" Lauren asked confusedly.
"You rang." They heard someone say. Anima chose that moment to burst through the doors with Dyson and Tamsin behind her. She wasn't as she appeared in Bo's dream. She still had that blonde streak in her hair but she wasn't naked and there were no wings sticking out of her back. Bo reasoned it may have to do with her subconscious. Anima was there to save them so her subconscious must've made her look like an angel. That was exactly it Bo thought.
Anima was in a purple robe with black and gold edges. The hood was up and her hair spilled out of the hood. Lauren noticed it was the same robe the hooded figures wore in her dream. Dyson and Tamsin were in there usual detective wear. They must've just started a shift.
"Anima what is going on?" Bo asked. "What's wrong with Kenzi?"
Anima went over to Kenzi's side. She lifted up her arm and observed the rash. "She has been cursed."
"Cursed?" Bo repeated. "Who would want to curse Kenzi?"
"It could be to get back at you." Tamsin answered. "You do have many enemies."
Anima shook her head. "No. That's not it." She then locked eyes with Dyson. "This was a consequence of her wanting to help a friend."
Everyone looked between Anima and Dyson not so sure what she meant by that.
"Dyson," Bo said as she advanced on the wolf. "What did you do?"
But Dyson's eyes never left Anima's. He understood what had happened. "Oh no Kenzi. What did you do?" He said out loud.
"Dyson start talking." Bo commanded. Her eyes were turning blue with rage.
Dyson then looked at Bo guiltily. His little human friend had too big of a heart. She cared too much about helping him she never thought of the consequences on her. "This should've never happened. I should've known she wouldn't take no for an answer."
Bo was getting impatient but Lauren interjected. She knew Bo wouldn't be rational at this point. "Dyson," she said softly "Who cursed Kenzi?"
Dyson's guilty eyes met calming honey brown ones. He never thought Lauren would be the one to show him compassion. "The Norn."
Tamsin and Lauren gasped at his answer. "What business does she have with the Norn?" Tamsin asked. "She would never make deals with a human."
"No but she would with a wolf." Bo said as she looked at Dyson with anger. "She got your love back for you didn't she?"
Dyson looked down as he nodded his head. At that moment Lauren's heart sank and Bo's anger flared. The blue banshee was screaming to get out and Bo let her. Without warning she punched Dyson in the face sending him stumbling back a few feet. "This is your fault wolf." Her succubus said. She was ready to pounce on him and she would've if it weren't for Lauren stepping in front of him.
"Bo you have to stop this." Lauren said firmly. She was afraid but wouldn't dare show it.
"Get out of my way." Bo said through clenched teeth. Not even in her succubus state would she hurt Lauren but she did want to get to Dyson.
"Bo please stop." Lauren said not faltering for a second. "Think of Kenzi."
"She is right Bo." Anima said as she came to Lauren's side. "Even though he may deserve it Kenzi would never want you to kill the wolf. Hell, she is going through this for him and right now all you are doing is wasting time when we could be saving Kenzi."
The succubus understood. Blue eyes turned back to brown and even though she was still filled with rage she would control it for Kenzi, for now. "How could you?" Bo said as she looked down at Dyson with so much hurt.
"I didn't think she would've gone back after the Norn refused to give me my love back." Dyson said as he looked up at her. "But Kenzi was so determined to get it back. She believed I needed it to make me whole again."
"And now you owe her your life." Bo said through clenched teeth. She then looked over to Anima. "What exactly is happening to her?"
"She is becoming fae."
A collective "What?" was said by everyone else in the room followed by "How?" "What kind?" "This isn't possible."
"I assure you it is possible. This rash is made out of fae essence. It is now seeping its way into Kenzi's body and attempting to bind with her DNA. As to what type of fae I'm not completely sure." Anima explained.
"How could you possibly know all of this?" Dyson asked.
"That is not of any importance right now. What is, is saving her?" Anima said looking down at Kenzi. "I care about her as much as you do and I am trying to help."
Dyson let it go. "Fine what do we do?"
"You will get the Ash." Anima said to Dyson. "He would want to know about this right away for personal reasons." Dyson nodded and turned to leave once he realized he was dismissed. "And you two will go see the Norn." She said pointing to Bo and Tamsin.
"Us?" Bo asked. "What can we do? She won't listen to a word we have to say."
Anima looked directly to Tamsin. "No she won't. Not without this." Anima said as she took a necklace out of her pocket. At the end of the necklace was a vial holding a dark purple substance.
"You can't be serious." Tamsin said. "You're making a deal with the Norn? Seriously? And you're giving her that out of all things."
Anima raised an eyebrow. "You will give her this and in return she will ensure that Kenzi makes it out of this alive and healthy. You can let her know if she doesn't then I will go down there and kill her myself."
"Why don't you come with us?" Bo asked. "I mean I'm sure she'll listen to you without you giving that crazy bitch anything."
"The only way to be sure we get exactly what we want is by making a deal with the Norn." Tamsin said.
"And I am staying here with Kenzi. I have powerful healing abilities. Combine that with Lauren's big brain and we will make sure Kenzi gets through this with as little pain as possible." Anima explained. Bo nodded. Tamsin would drive them there and give the Norn the necklace to save Kenzi. It seemed easy enough, Bo thought. They headed out of the lab leaving Anima and Lauren with an unconscious Kenzi.
"Lauren," Anima started but was interrupted by a hard slap across her face.
"You promised you would never leave me again." Lauren said with angry tears in her eyes.
"You have to believe I did it to protect you." Anima said as she held on to her cheek.
"Bullshit!" Lauren spat out. "You should've been 'protecting' me by being with me. I am safest with you around."
"Lauren you don't understand." Anima started.
"How could I?" Lauren was furious. "Here I am drowning in my own sorrow thinking that you are dead and never coming back but you've been alive this whole time and couldn't even tell me. Did you not think I would want to know this?"
"I did but," Anima said but was interrupted by Lauren.
"No, you don't get to say anything just yet. You are going to listen." Lauren said with determination. Anima just nodded in return. "I was paralyzed with depression because I thought I had lost you. You were all I thought about. I kept playing the fight with the Garuda over again in my head. I kept asking myself what I could've done to save you. I kept telling myself it should've been me. Losing you meant losing everything. Then I started having these dreams which I'm now sure weren't dreams but reality and were about you. Oh, and what's the deal with Tamsin? She knew you were alive this whole time? Then you come back only to leave me again. The one thing you promised me you would never do." Lauren finished with tears in her eyes.
"I can't possibly tell you how sorry I am, for everything but please let me explain." Anima said. Lauren nodded. "I was as good as dead when Alma brought me back to the ether but the counsel was there and they had something else in mind for me."
"So the cave was real?" Anima nodded. "And Tamsin was with you?"
"She took care of me." Anima said.
"What did they do to you then?" Lauren asked. "I saw them shoot you with something and I felt your pain, which was excruciating by the way."
"You felt my pain?" Anima asked. Her eyebrows scrunched together in confusion.
Lauren nodded. "Yes so much so that when I woke up I was met with this." Lauren lifted up her shirt to reveal the bruises that had been there since she had that first dream. Anima's eyes widened. "How is that even possible?"
"What is it?" Lauren asked. Anima looked up at her. She then took off her robe revealing her naked body and three long scars on the side of her stomach.
"Those are your warrior marks." Lauren said remembering when Anima was made mortal. She then noticed that they perfectly matched Lauren's bruises. "What does this mean?"
Anima shook her head. "I'm not sure. The counsel failed to tell me any of this."
"Can't you just ask them?"
"Look Lauren," Anima started but was interrupted by rapid beeping coming from Kenzi's heart monitor. Her body started convulsing.
Lauren rushed over to Kenzi's side. "Her heart is racing and her fever has come back. Her body is fighting the medicine we've given her."
"Secure the doors." Anima said. "Don't let anyone in."
Lauren did as she was told without question. When she looked back at Anima she was in her full Spiritus form. Her eyes were hollow and black, her fangs were elongated and her wings were out. Anima had her one hand over Kenzi's forehead and the other over her heart. A purple light was illuminating from her hands. Lauren knew Anima was healing Kenzi. She had stopped Kenzi's seizure and her heart beat became steady. Lauren watched Anima as she concentrated on Kenzi. She noticed a blood tear escape Anima's eye. She knew Anima and Kenzi were close but she never really noticed how close they were. Kenzi was stable again. Anima had done all she could for her. Kenzi began to stir. She opened her eyes to see Anima hovering over her.
"Not that I'm not happy to see you or anything" Kenzi said groggily "but do you think you could cover your naked goods?"
Anima laughed. "Then you won't be able to see my wings." She said and flapped them for enthusiasm.
"Woah." Kenzi was mesmerized.
"Yes you can touch them." Anima said as Kenzi didn't miss a beat and extended her had to pet them.
"Kenzi, how are you feeling?" Lauren asked as went into her doctor mode.
"Like a clan of ogres stepped danced in my head and invited their troll friends to hack up the rest of my body then they threw me into a pit of fire." Kenzi answered.
"What was the last thing you remembered?" Lauren asked.
Kenzi thought a second. "I was at the Dal drinking then I was in a burning room with Bo and, and you." She said pointing to Anima. "What happened?"
"We believe the Norn cursed you after you got Dyson's love back." Anima said.
"That bitch." Kenzi stated.
"Kenzi, we need you to tell us what happened when you went to see the Norn." Lauren said.
"You mean after I hacked up her tree with a chainsaw?"
"What? Kenzi!" Kenzi cringed at Lauren's tone. "What were you thinking?"
"I don't know. I just wanted to help a friend." Kenzi said sounding like a child.
Lauren sighed. "What happened afterwards?"
"She took me into the back room to give me Dyson's love and then, oh shit."
"What?" Both Lauren and Anima asked.
"Some goo may have spilled on me."
"Whatever that was is causing all of this." Anima said. Kenzi went to say something but was met with a coughing fit. Lauren ran off to fetch some water as Anima stayed with her. Anima sat Kenzi upright as Lauren came back with a bottle of water. She helped Kenzi drink.
Anima had put her wings back into her body and put her robe back on. "Just take it easy." She said as she came back to Kenzi's side.
Kenzi nodded. "I believe you owe me a bedtime story about yourself angel face."
Anima smiled then looked to Lauren. "Well I guess I should start from the beginning."
Tamsin had driven them to the outskirts of town. Her truck could only take them so far. They were now in the middle of the woods trying to find their way to the Norn's dwelling. Bo was determined to save her best friend. Nothing and no one could stop her. She would just have to kill the bitch if she refused to help her friend. Tamsin was walking in front of her mumbling about who knows what. She could only hear a snippets of the Valkyrie's conversation with herself.
"Is she serious?"
"Making a deal with the devil."
"What the hell is she thinking?"
"She better know what she is doing."
Bo had no idea what she was talking about. "Um sorry to interrupt this enlightening conversation with yourself but do you actually know where you are going?"
"We are like ten minutes away." Tamsin sounded annoyed.
"So how do you know Anima?" Bo asked trying to make conversation. She could feel her succubus pleading to get out and needed a distraction.
"I'm uh, I'm assigned to her." Tamsin said without looking at her.
"What so the Morrigan has you working as her bodyguard or something?"
"Or something."
"So what's up with the two of you?" Bo asked.
"We're here." Tamsin said cutting off Bo's questioning.
They were in front of a little cottage. It looked homely and completely un-fae. "Cozy." Bo commented as she marched towards the door.
"Woah, hold up succubus." Tamsin said as she stopped her. "We go in there with guns blazing and we will never get the Norn to make a deal with us."
"She did this to Kenzi." Bo said furiously.
"And she is the only one who can fix this." Tamsin reasoned. "Listen, when we go in there you will not say a word. I do all the talking."
"But,"
"No. If you want to help Kenzi then you will not say one word." Tamsin commanded.
Bo knew she was right. She had the habit of speaking before she thought her words through. "Fine."
They walked up to the door. When Tamsin went to knock the door opened on its own. Tamsin motioned for them to walk in. When they got in they saw an older looking woman sitting in a rocking chair next to a tree that seemed to be dying. She looked to be sick. She looked up at the two intruders and started laughing darkly.
"My, my now isn't it the famous unaligned succubus. Many have come to me on your behalf. What more could you want?" She laughed again followed by a coughing fit.
"Is she dying or something?" Bo whispered to Tamsin. "Because this just got so much easier."
Tamsin cleared her throat. "We have come to make a deal."
"Oh a Valkyrie." The Norn said. "I haven't seen one of you in here in centuries. Of course time does move differently in here. What could you possibly want?"
"I am here on the behalf of another."
The Norn started coughing again. "I will only give those gifts that have time to come to me."
"I believe you will make an exception." Tamsin said. She then held out the necklace showing the Norn the contents of the vial.
"Where did you get this?" The Norn asked as she observed the vial.
"Regina Quoque Spiritus." Tamsin said locking eyes with the Norn.
"This cannot be." The Norn said with fear in her eyes.
"Something is coming and no one is safe." Tamsin began. "You know she cannot stop your inevitable death but she can guarantee what will become of you afterwards."
Bo was listening intently. She had no idea what Tamsin was talking about or why the Norn was so scared but she could see that the Norn was going to listen. She reached out for the necklace but Tamsin snatched it away.
"You will get this only when you help the human you cursed."
"You mean the same human that did this to me and my beautiful tree."
"What?" Bo said. "How?"
"Your pet came in here with a chainsaw and started a massacre on my tree I had to give into her and in return she was given a gift."
"A gift?" Bo said with anger. "A gift? Whatever you did to her is killing her. That is no gift." Bo said advancing on the Norn but Tamsin stopped her.
"Do we have a deal or not?" Tamsin asked waving the necklace in her face.
The Norn looked frustrated. Tamsin knew she had to give in. It was her only hope on living another life after this one. The Norn huffed out and slowly lifted herself up. She disappeared into a back room.
"What is she doing?" Bo asked.
Tamsin shrugged. "I'm not sure." Seconds later the Norn appeared with a bottle of blue liquid.
"Here." She said handing the bottle to Bo. "Drink this."
"Excuse me." Bo asked.
"The only way to ensure she will get out of this alive and well is if you drink that. She is your heart. The both of you are connected in more ways than one. You drink that and she will be well." The Norn explained.
"If this is a trick or doesn't work the way it should then I will warn you that the Regina will come and personally take your lives." Tamsin warned.
"Understood." The Norn nodded.
Bo looked to Tamsin. She nodded her approval. "Here goes everything." Bo said as she shot back the repulsive blue liquid. It felt like a centipede crawling down her throat. When it was finally all down she felt relief washing through her veins. She knew it worked. She nodded to Tamsin. Tamsin then handed the Norn the vial.
"It was pleasure." Tamsin said. "I hope I never have to see you again." They headed out the door.
"Oh Valkyrie I know there is something you want more than anything. We could make a deal of our own." The Norn said as Tamsin was about to head out the door.
"What could I possibly want from you?" Tamsin said not turning away from the door.
"The heart of the one you serve. I could give you two eternal love." The Norn said.
"It is not love if it is forced." Tamsin said then headed out the door never to look back.
"Uh, Lauren." Anima said worriedly as she looked down at the hospital bed.
"Yeah, I know." Lauren said as she too was looking down at the bed that once held Kenzi.
Just then the doors to the lab burst open. In came Bo, Tamsin, Dyson, Hale and to everyone's surprise Trick.
"Where is she?" Bo said as they all walked towards the hospital bed.
But Lauren stopped her. "Uh, Bo. Don't freak out." She warned.
"Oh no." Bo thought the worse.
They all made it to the hospital bed. Bo didn't know what she was expecting but she wasn't expecting see this.
"She's beautiful." Hale said in admiration. Dyson and Lauren smiled at him.
"She's a fox." Bo practically shouted. "A white small very cute fox."
Anima smiled. "She is a kitsune."
"A kissing who?" Bo asked. "And why are you smiling? The Norn lied to us."
"A kitsune Bo." Lauren repeated. "And she is a perfectly healthy one at that. They have many abilities and one of them is shifting into a fox."
"And the white ones are very rare. They are believed to hold spiritual abilities. Like communicating with deities, jumping into other people's dreams, and sometimes invisibility." Hale explained not taking his eyes off of the sleeping white fox. "Oh and of course all kitsunes have fire abilities."
"Kenzi with fire?" Bo said. "I'm not so sure that is a good idea." She joked.
"So she is perfectly fine?" Bo asked Lauren who nodded with an enthusiastic smile.
"She is not fine. She is a kitsune." Trick stated furiously. "A human has turned fae."
Lauren was getting really tired of Trick's superiority complex.
"What is he doing here?" Anima said as she stood in front of Trick staring him down.
Dyson protectively stepped to his side. "You will stand down." He said through clenched teeth.
It was Tamsin that rushed towards him and in one fluid movement had a gun pointing to his head. "You will learn your place one way or another."
Bo, Lauren and Hale looked on knowing this was escalating very quickly.
"Tamsin what are you doing?" Dyson said to his partner.
"I've grown to like you wolf but make no mistake threaten her again and I will not hesitate to make your worse dreams a reality." Tamsin warned.
"Tamsin that is enough." Anima said. Tamsin lowered her gun.
"Not that it is any of your business but I am here because Kenzi is family." Trick said looking to Anima.
"Family? You dare call her family when you've enslaved and killed so many humans in your life and you still look at humans as if they were inferiority to you." Anima said looking down at him. She looked over to Lauren. "He is not to be trusted."
"What?" Yeah he was an ass but she never thought of him as an enemy.
"I'm not to be trusted!" Trick said astonished. "I believe we both know that you have been the one lying through your teeth since you came here. It is time you enlighten us with some truths. Tell them all why you are really here."
"Why are you really here?" Bo asked beginning to get suspicious.
"Bo now is not the time." Lauren pleaded.
"No now is the perfect time." Trick began.
"Don't think because you once held the title of the Blood King that it would intimidate me in any way. You are a scared, selfish, greedy little man." Anima said staring him down. "You can't even begin to know exactly why I am here. This has become bigger than we could've ever imagined."
"We who?" Bo asked.
"And I am not the only one with secrets, Trick." Anima said ignoring Bo's question. "Or did we forget about the tyrant you really were."
"Trick what is she talking about?" Bo asked but no one was listening.
"Bo?" They all heard from the hospital bed. They looked over to see Kenzi awake, afraid and naked.
"Woah, Hale, Dyson, Trick look away." Bo warned as she ran over to her friend.
"Bo, what happened? Why is everyone here? Why am I naked?" Kenzi began to panic.
"Everything is okay." Bo began to soothe her best friend. "Anima helped and,"
"Anima?" Kenzi repeated as her eyes landed on the Spiritus. "That was real? Everything you said was real?"
"Yes." Anima answered.
"What'd you say?" Bo asked.
"I will explain everything once you get Kenzi some close and he leaves." Anima said as she pointed to Trick.
"I am going nowhere." Trick tried to argue.
"Yes you are." Hale said. "She has something of importance to say and will gladly say it only if you leave. Whatever it is could be beneficial to both light and dark so as your Ash I am ordering you to leave."
"You can't!"
"I can and I am." Hale challenged. "I can have Dyson and Tamsin escort you out."
"That won't be necessary Ash." Trick said right before he stormed off.
"Oh and Dyson." Hale called out to the wolf. "Everything said in this room stays in this room. Understand?"
"I understand." Dyson said as he bowed his head slightly.
It took a moment for Kenzi to comprehend everything that was happening to her. She was angry at the fae for making her something she is not. She was also scared because she had no idea what this all meant. After Bo had gotten her something to wear she calmed down a bit but was still unsure of what her life would be like now.
Anima knew it was time that everyone heard the truth. She needed them to so they could save the world as they all know it.
"Okay if I am going to speak I am going to speak without any interruptions. Understand?" Anima asked to which everyone nodded. "We all know about the Great Fae War, the blood laws and of Trick handing off his own daughter to the Dark King but there is much you don't know. The Blood King would've been taken down by a warrior named Rainer who had the gift of foresight. He started off as a noble warrior fighting for a good cause but the Dark King got to him. He poisoned him with evil thoughts and turned him into a monster. Rainer would've won the war for the Dark King if it wasn't for Trick's blood magic. Trick made it so his army would turn on him but instead of letting his soul be guided to Valhalla like he should've Trick wrote off Rainer from existence. A Valkyrie was robbed of a soul and Rainer was never able to rest. The Dark King was defeated but he was never killed. As you know Aoife was given to him after she betrayed her father but that was what the Dark King wanted. Their views weren't all that different. The Dark King wanted the destruction of the sides just like Aoife did but he wanted to rule them and he needed a powerful mate to produce an even more powerful heir or in this case heiress." Anima looked to Bo.
"Me?" Bo asked in shock.
Anima nodded. "Yes you Bo. You are technically a princess and one day you're meant to be Queen of all fae but only if you defeat your father. He is the very definition of evil whereas you are pure of heart. Only you can lead the fae into peace and prosperity. Your father didn't expect you to be as powerful, even more powerful than himself. He was in hiding for years looking for you so he could destroy you. He finally found you after you defeated the Garuda. He could feel your power running through his veins. Binding the others to you set off a trigger of sorts for your true strength. You can't even begin to imagine the power you possess and you will need to tap into that power to defeat your father but in order to do that there are two things you need to do. You must first complete your dawning."
"What in the hell is a dawning?" Bo interrupted. Anima could see everyone was getting antsy and the interruptions were going to start.
"It's sort of like a coming of age journey but for fae." Dyson tried to explain.
"So like a bat mitzvah?" Kenzi asked.
"No. Not like a bat mitzvah." Tamsin said. "It's like a test of your fae abilities and your capability to control them. If you pass you come out as a fully developed you but if you fail you turn into an underfae."
"No pressure." Bo said sarcastically.
"I am more than confident you will pass Bo." Anima said which surprised everyone especially Bo since she wasn't always one to support Bo or her abilities. "You are powerful and you will have Tamsin, Dyson, Hale and I to help you through this."
Bo nodded. "Okay so what is the second thing?"
Anima took a deep breath in. "You must defeat Rainer."
"What?" Bo said jumping to her feet. "I thought you said he was dead."
"No I said he was written off from existence."
"What does that even mean? How am I supposed to defeat a guy who knows what I'm going to do before I even do?"
"You won't be doing this alone." Anima started. "Rainer was never dead. His soul was lost."
"Lost where."
"In the ether."
"The ether?" Lauren asked. "How is that possible?"
"Excuse me but what is the ether?" Bo asked.
"My realm." Anima answered. "It's how I helped you get to Kenzi. See you weren't sleeping when you were in that burning room. It wasn't a dream it was very real. Only it was real in a different realm. Kenzi brought the both of you to the ether."
"Me?" Kenzi asked. "How?"
"As a kitsune you have the ability to jump into others dreams. That is how you got Bo. You also have the ability to jump into other realms. That is how you pulled the both of you into my realm. It is the easiest realm to get into. You don't need magic or a spell. Most humans get there during REM sleep or when they are in a coma. You needed help and your abilities brought you to me." Anima explained.
"So technically I saved myself. You just helped." Kenzi said.
Anima smiled. "Technically, yes."
Kenzi did a little fist pump. "Score one for the baby kitsune."
"So how did Rainer escape your realm?" Bo asked interrupting Kenzi's mini celebration.
"Once he arrived there no one knew what to do with him. He wasn't supposed to be there but there was no way we could get his soul into Valhalla so we let him be."
"What?!" Dyson growled. "You let a mad man live amongst you."
"It was not my decision but yes we did. We do not torture souls, we guide them. He was powerless in our realm anyways. He lived among us and he became the noble man he once was. He truly was a good man. It was the Dark King that made him into a monster."
"That doesn't explain how he escaped the ether or did you set him free?" Dyson accused.
"I did no such thing but as I explained before the ether is an easy realm to get into and the Dark King possesses the power to get in it. He was just waiting for the right moment to rip Rainer out of the ether so he could possess him and poison him again. But you must kill him Bo and this time Tamsin will take his soul to Valhalla and he will rest in peace. That is the way it was meant to be." Anima explained.
"Who were you with at the ball?" Lauren asked. "I saw you with a masked man. Was it Rainer?"
Anima nodded. "Yes. It was. Rainer and I had become friends while he was in the ether. I had to see him. I had to see that there was a shred of humanity left in him and for a second I could see the real Rainer and he pleaded with me to take his life but I couldn't. He was someone I once cared for. I couldn't bring myself to do it." She then turned to Lauren. "But when I saw you I knew I had to let you know I was alive but I couldn't let Rainer see who I was with. If I did the Dark King would've known who you were. I couldn't let him get anywhere near you."
"Why? What kind of power does he possess?" Hale asked.
Anima looked to Tamsin. "He is the Norse god known as Loki."
"You mean like enemy to Odin, Loki, the same Loki that causes chaos everywhere he goes." Kenzi asked. Everyone looked at her in shock. "What? I do read. I do know some mythology."
"Yes that same Loki. Odin wants him dead just as bad as everyone else. Loki should've never come to earth but he did and established a kingdom of his own. We can't have Loki rule again. He will try to take over earth and then control Asgard. If he rules then life as we know it will be destroyed." Tamsin explained.
"Is that why you're here?" Lauren asked Tamsin.
"I was given to Anima. Odin is father to all Valkyrie's and he sought me out to be by her side." Tamsin explained.
"You're her Valkyrie?" Hale asked to which Tamsin nodded. "But why? Odin would never give a Valkyrie to just anyone."
"That's very true." Dyson added.
"Who are you?" Bo asked.
Anima looked past Bo to Lauren. She could see the fear in her eyes. Even Kenzi was a bit fearful and she just learned exactly what Anima was but it was time that everyone learned of her true nature. Anima undid her robe and let it slide off her body. After her naked body was revealed her wings burst out. It was exactly how Bo had seen her in the burning room. Only this time a halo was glowing on top of her head.
"You're an angel." Bo said in awe.
"Not exactly." Anima said.
"No you're a Spiritus." Hale said.
"No she is Regina Quoque Spiritus." Tamsin said as she got down on one knee and bowed her head. Dyson and Hale then did the same as they recognized the title.
"What did you just call her?" Lauren asked. "Did she just call you the Regina?"
"The what?" Bo asked. "Can someone explain to me what is going on?"
"Yes I would love to know as well." Lauren said sounding upset that Anima would keep so much from her.
"I am not fae nor am I human." Anima began. "I am a Spiritus or a Grim Reaper."
"What like an Angel of Death?" Bo asked getting panicked.
"Sort of. My kind are kind of like guardian angels as well. We are sent to those we are meant to guide to watch them during their lives and guide them after death. If they live a good prosperous life then we guide them to the next. If not then we consume their souls and they are never to be again."
"How do you consume their souls?" Bo asked.
"By eating their hearts."
"That doesn't explain why everyone is bowing to you right now." Bo said.
"My kin has been led by a counsel since the beginning of time. When I was killed by the Garuda my sister brought me back to the ether and to the counsel. Instead of letting me die they had other plans for me. The counsel were the most powerful of us all and they gave me all of their power." Anima explained.
"That's what I saw and felt in my dream?" Lauren asked.
Anima nodded. "Yes. Apparently I'm not like the rest of my kin. I can and have loved and fallen in love whereas no other Spiritus has. See my kin don't have personalities of their own. As Spiritus we are attracted to certain qualities in mortals and that determines how they act. If one is attracted to a mortal that is brave then they will act brave in everything that they do. I'm not like that. I can be brave, passionate, loyal and any other quality I want to be because that is how I am. I've also sacrificed all that I am for love." Anima said as she looked at Lauren. "And it is all because of this they gave me the power they thought I deserved and needed to rule over the ether and the Spiritus. They made me queen so I could help you Bo. Your father is very powerful and will have a great army. With my help you will pass your dawning, you will kill Rainer and you will defeat your father."
Bo was beginning to panic. It was all too much and it was all too overwhelming. It seemed as of every day someone else was trying to take her life away from her. She didn't want to be queen of anything. All she wanted was to live a simple life with the people she loved most.
"I have to inform the Morrigan." Hale said.
"No need." Anima said. "She is working for me. The Dark King would go after her first since she is the Morrigan. By Evony working for me she is under my protection. She gives me information and helps protect those I care for. And of course she doesn't want Loki reigning again. Even she isn't that big of a bitch."
"So you can trust the Morrigan but you can't trust Trick?" Dyson asked.
"No. He is the reason we are going to be fighting this war and I do not trust him to try and regain his title of Blood King. He was a tyrant once what makes you think he won't be again?" Anima asked challenging Dyson.
"So the Halo," Kenzi started "is it like your crown or something?"
Anima nodded. "I'm the only one that bears it."
"So you were made queen to help me?" Bo added. Anima nodded. "And once I've done everything I am supposed to become queen?" Anima nodded again.
"Why can't you do it? Why can't you become queen? Who said I wanted this? Who said I wanted any of this?" Bo said sounding furious.
"Bo it is the only way we can defeat your father. It is the only way we can have peace." Anima tried to explain.
"No. I won't accept that. I didn't ask for power. I didn't ask for my grandfather to make bad choices or for my father to be a complete asshole. I don't want this." Bo said with tears of fury creeping into her eyes. "First I have to be the champion then I'm expected to be queen. All I've ever wanted was a bit of normalcy in my life and I can't even have that. This is bullshit. Other people's actions have determined my life for me. How is that fair?"
"Bo I'm sorry." Anima said looking to Lauren. "I'm sorry but there is more."
"No. I don't want to hear it. I can't. Not right now." Bo said as the tears came pouring out. "I have to go." She said as she ran out.
"Bo wait!" Lauren called out but she was already gone.
Anima walked over to Lauren. "Give her time. It is a lot to take in but we do have to tell her and soon." Anima warned.
Lauren just stared at the spot Bo just occupied. She felt fear, she felt pain and she felt panicked. Bo was already freaking out about everything. How was she going to react to the real reason Anima was with Lauren? She had to tell Bo. She couldn't keep it from her any longer. She was going to be furious and hurt. Lauren sighed. "I know."
