Chapter 3
Excerpt of an interview with Yoshitaka Minami, ex-member of both the GLA and Black Knights, founder and leader of the Japan National Party (JNP), 2026 a.t.b
Reporter: So what you are trying to say, Mr. Yoshitaka, is that Zero was never an ally of the GLA before the creation of the Black Knights?
Yoshitaka Minami: Yes.
Reporter: And that Kaname Ohgi never had the intention of leaving the GLA to join the Black Knights.
Yoshitaka Minami: That is correct.
Reporter: But Prime Minister Kaguya said otherwise in an interview-
Yoshitaka Minami: I'm sorry but the prime minister is wrong. Ohgi and I joined the Global Liberation Army together and since then, I served as an officer under him in both the GLA and the Black Knights. I was there at his side the entire time. She was not.
Reporter: What about the 'Orange Scandal'? It was known that GLA forces led by Kaname Ohgi aided Zero in rescuing Suzaku Kururugi when he was being transfered to his court-martial.
Yoshitaka Minami: We would had have never helped Zero under any normal circumstances. Every one of us in the GLA saw the idea of a rescue attempt as something that was not worth the risk especially for Zero whom we did not trust. But Ohgi felt that we owed Zero a favor for helping us out back at Shinjuku Ghetto.
Reporter: I don't understand.
Yoshitaka Minami: During the battle of Shinjuku Ghetto, Zero provided us with information regarding the enemy movement and positions. Without it, things might not have went as well as it did. When Zero came to us requesting our help, Ohgi saw the chance to make things even between him and Zero. [1] As soon as the rescue was over, we all left, not wanting to have anything to do with Zero, especially that idea of his.
Reporter: Idea?
Yoshitaka Minami: Just days before the scandal, we were contacted by Zero who wanted to arrange a meeting with our leader Ohgi. I was not among those who was there but I learned what happened from Ohgi himself. To make it short, Zero wanted us to leave the GLA and join him in some 'greater struggle' against Britannia. Needless to say, Ohgi was not impressed and so too was everyone else who was there.
Reporter: If what you said is true, why then did you all join Zero and formed the Black Knights later on?
Yoshitaka Minami: (sighs) It is ... complicated. You must understand that the GLA leadership is unforgiving and ruthless. Despite everything Ohgi had achieved, it was not enough to compensate for the mission that was given to him by our leaders which we failed to carry out. That, and they were not pleased with what they had heard about Zero.
Unknown location ...
"The question my brothers is what are we going to do with this victory of ours?"
"Our forces have achieved a major victory at Shinjuku Ghetto despite being outnumbered and outgunned. What is that if not a sign of the growing weakness of Britannia? We should adopt a more aggressive policy. Order our men to step up the attacks."
"We can't do that. This victory has attracted far more attention from the world than we can afford at this stage. And from what I understand, the only reason why our forces were able to claim victory was due to the information provided by this Zero."
"Which was only provided late during the battle and which our forces for the most part ignored. It was their own efforts that they were able to push the britannians back, all while inflicting massive casualties on the enemy."
"It does not remove the fact that they had failed in their mission."
"Perhaps, but you must admit though, the battle had provided us with a wealth of information about our military capability against Britannia's, especially those Sutherlands of theirs."
"The way I see it, there are only two options for us to take. Either we keep as low as possible until all of this had died down or we move on to the next phase."
"Hiding will not make a difference now. The britannians will never forget the humiliation we have dealt them; they will do everything they can to avenge their prince's death."
"I see no reason why we should be afraid. Can't you see? This isn't the same as those years. Our enemies have become complacent and weak. Their numerical superiority mean nothing to us. Now is the time to rise."
"My spies have informed me that some of our forces have taken to stepping up their attacks without authorization. Others have taken to fighting among themselves. The soldiers are tired of waiting, they are eager to begin the war."
"A bad move. We have yet to amass enough men and resources needed for this war. It will be a slaughter if we act now."
"None of us are suggesting to go on the full offensive. Escalating our activities phase by phase will give us enough time to prepare and make any adjustments to the plan."
"Perhaps so but you should be aware that things can easily get out of control."
"It will work. We just need to proceed with utmost caution."
"If that's the case, we will have to notify our allies."
"Leave that to me, I will see to it that the GLA will gain full cooperation from them."
"What about the poison gas? Failing to secure it must have proved detrimental to the project."
"Not as we had feared. Dr. Thrax has assured me that we are still on schedule. That said, we will have to punish those responsible for overseeing the mission. An example must be made lest our men start thinking that failure is something that can be easily compensated with."
"You can leave that to me. They are my forces after all."
"What about this Zero? My sources have said that this fool had attempted to convince some of our forces to abandon the cause. That, and that our forces had a hand in the rescue attempt that night."
"Is that so? What else do you know?"
Somewhere in South America, several days later ...
The slave sank his hoe into the hard ground, splitting clods of earth with a grunt.
Sweat dripped from his face to leave dark marks in the dust and his shoulders burned with effort. So busy was he in his duty that he did not notice the man standing near him as he was too wrapped up in his own misery. He raised his tool again and caught a flicker of motion out of the corner of his eye. He did not react immediately, his surprise covered in the motions of his work. The blisters on his hand had broken again and he laid down the hoe to tend to them, aware of the man but hesitant to talk with him.
His masters were quick to punish those who traded even a word with anyone who wasn't part of their household.
"Who are you?" the stranger asked softly.
The slave slowly turned to face the stranger. It was a man dressed in simple clothes, his face partially covered, his eyes alight with pity.
A native just like him.
For a moment, the slave wondered whether he should answer or not.
Did the man know about the danger of straying his master's territory?
Looking around and seeing no guards around, the slave spoke.
"I am just a humble worker." He took another look before continuing, this time in a whisper. "You should not stay here sir. My master has guards patrolling these fields. They will kill you for trespassing if they see you here."
The stranger chuckled as he turned away to look at a mansion not far from where the two of them were.
"You need not worry my friend. You will soon be a free man."
The slave froze.
What was the man saying?
A free man? Had he lost his mind?
What does he want?
Was this a test by his masters, to test his loyalty?
"I ... have to get back to work," he muttered, bending down to pick up the hoe only for the stranger to stop him.
"Did you not hear me? There is no need for you to work for these britannians anymore. You will soon be free of their tyranny."
"You are wrong. I am a worker and I do not know you," the slave snapped in a bitter tone.
The stranger shook his head. "Not anymore."
Convinced that the man he was talking to was mad, the slave was about to give a sharp reply when he heard gunshots in the distance that grew in volume. He jumped with fright, his mind filled with confusion as to what was going on. The sound of motorcycles shifted his attention and he saw men armed with weapons on bikes approaching him and the stranger before stopping. Taking a few steps back, he tripped over a rock and fell on his back.
Ignoring the pain, he watched in bewilderment as the soldiers spoke with the stranger.
Then, the stranger turned his attention back to him.
"What do you want with me?" the slave said with fear as the stranger approached him. He raised his hands to shield himself as though expecting a beating. "I have done nothing wrong. Please, don't hurt me."
To his surprise, the stranger knelt down and offered his hand.
"There is no need to worry my friend. You were forced against your will to be a slave and now, you have been made free. That is the truth. My men have dealt with the guards and are now storming the mansion where those who had enslaved you are hiding. Soon, everyone here who had been enslaved by the britannians will be free."
The slave looked at the stranger in the eyes, taking in his expression.
There was excitement there and he finally believed them. "Who are you?"
"Me?" the stranger said. He pulled the robe away from his mouth, revealing a strong healthy face with a warm smile. "My name is of little importance but if you wish to know, it is Ernesto Guevara. [2] As to who my men and I are exactly, we are soldiers of the Global Liberation Army and today, we are striking back at our invaders."
Tokyo Settlement
"You've scored an average of 94% in your Knightmare frame aptitude tests," said Lloyd, the man whom Suzaku had first met back at Shinjuku Ghetto, who was seated opposite of the table and handed the folder containing the results to him. "A remarkable performance I would say. We would be delighted to have you in our team."
"Thank you sir, but-"
"No need to be formal Suzaku, you can address me by my name."
"But s-I mean Lloyd, I don't see how I can join your group," Suzaku said.
"Whatever do you mean? You've scored higher than most Knightmare pilots and that's something. I see no reason for you to be unable to join us."
"But I'm an honorary britannian. We-"
"Yes, yes, we all know that," the scientist interrupted, dismissing Suzaku's words with a wave of his hand. "Must I remind you that we are a research group? The regulations and protocols you've mentioned do not apply to us. Which means that there shouldn't be any problem with you being the our group's pilot."
Suzaku adopted a thoughtful look as he thought about the offer.
"Why me? Surely there are other more experienced Knightmare pilots for you to pick from?" the teen asked.
"Ah, but that is where you're wrong," Lloyd replied. "You must surely know by now that Lancelot here is far more powerful and capable than most of the Knightmares we have in our arsenal. Unfortunately, Prince Clovis never saw much in my project and neither did his assistant, General Bratley. It was difficut to obtain the resources needed for my project let alone a pilot. And now with the high casualties of Knightmare pilots and the ever deteriorating situation here in Japan, can you see how impossible that would be? On the other hand, no one is going to object if I took an auxiliary soldier for my project."
"As to why I chose to test you of all people, well, let's just say that you're a very interesting person. Back at Shinjuku Ghetto, you volunteered to help me and Cecily with the injured even in that state of yours. Most soldiers would be more than willing to get some rest after going through such an experience but not you Suzaku. That, and the fact you seemed very determined to serve Britannia."
The scientist produced a set of documents with a pen and passed them over the table. "So what do you think?"
Suzaku weighed the offer, comparing the pros of accepting with the non-existent cons before signing the documents.
If what Lloyd had said was true, then there should be no problem with this.
More importantly, he finally might have the power to end the pointless conflicts spawned by the rebels with the empire.
"Excellent," Lloyd stated as he took the documents from Suzaku. "Now, let me get Cecily to give you a tour of the entire building. I'll come back to you later and we'll have a discussion about your new job."
Just as he said those words, the scientist's assistant came into the room with an urgent look on her face.
"Come, quick. The two of you need to see this."
Excerpt of a broadcast by ARC News, 2017 a.t.b
As the introduction of the pro-GLA global news broadcasting corporation was over, we see Omar bin Ghazali, television reporter and anchor with his usual solemn expression. He takes a glance at the papers he is holding in his hands before speaking.
"Inspired by the tremendous victory of the GLA forces in Shinjuku Ghetto, Japan, brave GLA soldiers throughout the globe are emerging to strike at the Britannian Empire and European Union in an effort to undermine their authority. News by other medias that the military forces have succeeded in controlling the situation are nothing more than lies. More reliable news from the GLA have revealed that several bases of both Britannia and the EU have fallen to the freedom fighters who have successfully dispense justice on the corrupt lackeys of both nations.
During the funeral of Clovis la Britannia, the emperor of Britannia made an official statement that the Global Liberation Army is nothing more than a group of weaklings that cannot hope to stand against the might of Britannia for it is an organization that clings unto foolish ideals.
A feeble attempt by the cowardly despot to hide his weakness.
The GLA leadership has stated that this is only the tip of what is to come and that there is nothing the britannians and europeans can do to stop the inevitable. Before I sign off, I wish to inform my viewers that the ARC News will be broadcasting a video sent by the GLA after this.
From news headquarters, I am Omar bin Ghazali."
The video of the reporter is replaced with that of a dark room.
A single light was focused on the center of the room, enough to reveal the room's occupants; a few men whose hands were bounded, hoods over their heads and were on their knees, surrounded by GLA soldiers wearing balaclavas. Judging by the wounds they sported, one could tell that they have not been treated well. We see one of the soldiers raise a paper and began reading from it aloud, listing the crimes committed by the Holy Britannian Empire.
As the soldier continued to read aloud, one of the bounded men started shouting, interrupting the speaker.
"You won't get away with this! The Holy Britannian Empire will avenge us and when they do, you will wish-"
One of the GLA soldiers walked over to the man and hit him in the face with the butt of his AK-47, prompting the man to scream in pain as he collapsed to the ground. Kicking the downed Britannian in the stomach several times, the soldier then pulled him up before returning to his former position.
It wasn't long before the speaker was finished and he gestured to one of the soldiers who pulled out a knife and walked behind one of the prisoners.
"In light of your crimes, the GLA has decided that the appropriate punishment for these criminals is death."
The knife flashed and before we knew it, the first prisoner collapsed to the ground, trashing about as blood seeped out from his neck. They did not wait for the man to die; one by one, the prisoners were slit in the throat until they were all on the ground, trashing about, their blood formed a large pool in the room. When the last of them stopped struggling, the broadcast went out.
-Explanation-
[1] I was planning to use Kallen as the excuse why Ohgi and the GLA got involved in the rescue of Suzaku but decided that it would not fit.
[2] Yes, it is Che Guevara. I thought he would be an interesting character to use in this story. He is currently in his thirties at this point.
-Author's Note-
Chapter 3 is complete.
This chapter was more of seeing how well the other different styles of writing that I had not use before this would turn out for the fanfic. I had thought of putting some KGB intel database but decide to write it for the next update. Next chapter will be on Ohgi and his group, Lelouch as he tries to figure out his next move, the Soviet Union, Oceanic Federation and an interesting battle in the Middle East.
If there is anything you readers feel that you do not like about the way this fanfic is being written or have any questions to ask, feel free to mention them.
Thank you for reading this story and I hoped you enjoyed reading it.
