"Death is not the end. It is merely the end of one cycle and the beginning of another."

It was ironic how quickly things could change.
Only moments ago they were walking side by side, brushing shoulders, laughing without a worry in the world. They were talking like friends would - his first friend.
But all friends must part some day, and all dreams came to an abrupt end. He knew the end would come soon. It was inevitable.
The unmistakable twist in his gut would signal it – the end – then it would happen again. No matter how many times he tried it always ended the same.
He dreaded the moment the hand that held his so securely slipped away, and the eyes that had been gazing at him so tenderly were left to helplessly watch the events that were about to unfold…
Squealing tires. Echoing honks. Panicked screams. Pain.
The agonizing burning would start then, shooting through the nerves of his unnaturally twisted arms and legs. His racing heart would beat and beat and beat until it felt like it would explode and beat no more. The audible crack of his bones bending, breaking was drowned out by the hoarse scream rippling through his vocal cords, begging for the intense pain to stop. And it would stop, he knew. Everything would cease the moment he fell back. One second, then two and three – time moved in slow motion, and then without any warning at all his skull would smash into the pavement – hard.
A steady throbbing would replace the pain. He would no longer choke on the coppery stench of blood or feel the sticky liquid soaking his back. Everything would stop. Everything would feel numb.
Then the boy with the white hair would rush to his side. He always tried to keep his eyes open if only a few moments longer, because he knew if he dared to close them everything would fade and he would forget ever meeting this boy. So he would force his drooping lids to stay risen, no matter how heavy they felt, and gaze into the strange vermilion irises hovering over his own; the same red hue as the crimson liquid pooling around his body. Through the numbness he could feel the boy's pale arms cradling him to his warm chest.
It always felt nice, being held like that. It made him feel tired, so very tired…
Through the sensation of slipping, he could vaguely feel liquid drops hitting his cheeks and hear the boy's sobs; his desperate, pleading sobs.
"Yukiteru-kun, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I… I failed."
…Why?
Why did he always apologize?
Death did not hurt. He was used to it now...
That was the eighth time he had died in the arms of the boy he had met only earlier that day. Yes, eight times now he had seen him cry for him, and he would continue to see him cry a ninth, maybe even a tenth time….
It was because he was unable prevent what would inevitably occur. He was weak, so he would continue to die again and again.
Even though death did not bother him, the boy's tears did (they always did...) and when the time came when he would open his eyes again, he wouldn't even know his name.
They would meet again, never realizing it wasn't for the first time. They would walk down the same path they had so many times before, and he would die. That was his fate.
He would make sure the next time they met they would laugh together, hold each other until his inevitable final moments…
Because when he came back to the world, the boy who always introduced himself (time and time again, without fail...) as 'Akise Aru, your friend' would never even know he died.
Don't worry, this is just a prologue. I would never make an actual chapter so absurdly short.
