The next person that he comes across he does not see in person. The events are all over the news. Merlin reads about them in one of the many newspapers that he scurries through in hopes that he will catch a glimpse of the Once and Future King. Instead he sees a different familiar face. One that he meet once during the Decennial Tournament back in Camelot. Before everything had gone to hell.
He is undefeated in the ring. Ten wins and no losses. They say that if he keeps on like this he could be the next Muhammad Ali. Merlin does not know what to think of this. Ali was the greatest after all. He has learned through his many years on this earth that what goes up must eventually come down. Even Ali lost a fight sooner or later. He just hoped that Gilli would be prepared for when he would lose his first fight. Hopefully he would be able to get back on his feet and go on to win the next one.
Merlin stumbles into a pub one night in order to watch his next fight. He had heard that the pub was going to be broadcasting it for their customers. It does not last very long. Less than ten minutes and he is down. After an impressive streak of wins Merlin has to admit that he is sad to see him defeated in such a short fight.
He reads in the papers that the next couple fights also end in defeat. Six fights and not a single win. It isn't until the seventh fight that he wins again. Barely but still a win. Soon after it comes out that he had cheated in his fights. 'Steroids', the headlines scream out. It turns that he had been taking performance enhancement drugs the whole time. He is stripped of his titles, his wins, and is banned from the world of boxing. Instead of comparing him to Muhammad Ali like they had done before they start calling him the Lance Armstrong of boxing.
Merlin is not sure what to think of the events that occurred. He isn't too surprised that Gilli would resort to using drugs to win. After all he had used magic during the tournament. He is guessing that he probably does not remember the past. If he had then he probably wouldn't have cheated in the ring. If he did remember Camelot though maybe he hadn't learned his lesson or just didn't care. Merlin wonders what he was trying to achieve this time around. It cannot be vengeance. Uther has yet to appear in this lifetime and if he was around he wasn't a boxer. Could it simply be fame and glory? Maybe. Or was he trying to please his father who Merlin read had been a minor boxer back in the day?
Whatever the reason Merlin doesn't get the chance to ask nor does he care to. He never sees Gilli in person. Never seeks him out either. No. He figures it is better not to find him. Merlin cannot help him nor can he help Merlin. He just hopes that after the events die down that the bitterness that fills Gilli can disappear and that he can find contentment in this lifetime.
