Loss is a common thing in this world. To sacrifice your life to serve and protect the citizens- everyone knows that they give up their life once they enlist.
Levi has seen many things in his life. It was once that he was a thug, a lowlife who succumbed to desperation, allowing the emotion to control his life. But he became a soldier- if not one of the best.
He was a savior.
And although he hardly showed it, he loved his squad. They weren't merely teammates or allies, they were his friends.
And now they were gone.
He remembers it all- seeing their corpses. The blood splattered across their bodies, the disturbed expressions that crossed their features. They deserved better.
The corporal knows that every mission has a risk. But he was too arrogant to possibly believe that his squad could die.
As he stands at their grave, a blank expression is on his face. He doesn't show it- but he's hurting inside. He doesn't mourn for them properly because he doesn't know how to.
And he hates himself for it.
A light grip on his shoulder breaks him from his trance, body going rigid at the contact. But it's only Erwin. The raven-haired male is surprised at the look of remorse on the commander's face. The blond has dealt with death many times before, but never has it been so obvious.
But if Erwin can mourn, he can, as well.
A frustrated scoff harshly escapes the younger male's lips at the foolish reasoning. He is one of humanity's best warriors on the squad. Emotions will do nothing for his friends. They're gone, and there is nothing he can do about it.
"You may be a soldier," the commander begins in a low tone, grasp on the other's shoulder tightening the slightest bit, "But you're still a man, Levi."
And with those few words, the grip loosens, and the corporal is left alone. For a moment, he is shocked, mind racing as he comprehends what Erwin had said. And finally, finally- he understands.
And he cries.
