"White or Black, kit? Challenger's choice." Sonja said, her eyes already calculating.

"It matters? Hmm... White then."

Sonja inclined her head and they moved to take their seats. "Whenever you're ready." Sonja said while her eyes moved to take in everything.

"Hey Sonja?" Lopt puffed out as she ran up the stairs next to the older and yet younger girl.

"Yes?" she replied as she leapt over a cracked step and continued up the stairs. A huff escaping her lips at the sight of the steps that remained; it didn't matter that she could bound up the whole of the stair case in a matter of moments, she was trying to not rely too much on her counterpart's abilities and what about the chance that there may be normal (more normal than her) humans here to see the great and powerful psychic?

"I know you mentioned a reason for coming out all this way, but think you could refresh my memory?"

Sonja let out a bit of a laugh, "You didn't pay attention to what I said."

"H-hey!" Lopt protested as Sonja kicked up the speed a notch.

"Come on! We're almost there!" Lopt blinked, she couldn't remember seeing Sonja look so excited about something. Then again, this was Sonja's first real break from Spirit World in a long time (according to the Dragoness). They raced up the remaining steps and stopped just before a gate. There was a sign next to the doors that read "Master Genkai's Disciple Making Tournament".

"Did we come so you could join this?" Lopt asked as she pointed at the sign.

"No, I'm here for a different reason. Although, I won't be surprised if one or both of us got dragged into it…" Sonja said, muttering the last part, before they opened the gate and entered the packed grounds of the temple. They walked among the crowd, eyes searching the area, and always ready to defend themselves should someone try anything. As they got closer to the temple, Lopt and Sonja caught sight of two Junior High boys, one that they knew and one that they didn't. "Yusuke, what are you doing here?" Sonja asked as they stopped next to the two. Yusuke explained that he was only there thanks to a job and then demanded to know why they were there as the Orange haired boy next to him first introduced himself, hit on them, then demanded to know who they were and how Yusuke knew them, and then accused Yusuke of cheating on Keiko. Lopt giggled as Sonja rolled her eyes. "I'm Renee "Sonja" Leonhart, call me "Sonja". This is my housemate, Lopt. Also, Yusuke's just a co-worker of mine." Lopt waved as she was introduced.

"Co-worker? You have a job, Urameshi?" Kuwabara, the orange haired boy, asked as he turned from the girls to face his… friend?

"He can explain later." Lopt stated.

"Silence! Master Genkai is appearing to greet everybody!" someone shouted and Sonja sighed as she shifted her purse from one shoulder to the other. The door of the temple slid open and a little old lady with faded pink hair appeared.

"That old granny is Master Genkai?" Yusuke inquired.

"Yes," Sonja stated as she picked out many features that her father shared with the woman before her. She glanced at Yusuke to see that he didn't look all that impressed and didn't have to read his thoughts to know that he didn't think Genkai was that strong.

"Oh, boy! So many are gathered here? Then we'll begin our test immediately!" Genkai called as several people whispered about how they thought the test would be "very strict" and how they would surpass it.

"Man…" Yusuke muttered.

"For the first test, we'll…" a dramatic pause "draw lots!" Almost everyone looked surprised.

"What? Draw lots!?"

"Just what is she trying to pull!?"

"Everyone, come up and draw a lot from the vase." Genkai ordered. Everyone formed a line and one by one took a lot. Sonja and Lopt shrugged as they fell in step with the others. "Everyone, open up your lots and see. If you've got a red piece of paper… It means you've been chosen and you've passed the first round." Everyone ripped the lots open and many yelled angrily or surprised about their failure.

"Please let it not be me!" Yusuke said as he opened his lot.

"I've got it." Yusuke and Kuwabara stated as they both looked at their red lots. Sonja smiled in amusement as she held up a red one and Lopt giggled before asking why she had a red one.

"You got one too!?" the boys asked one another before turning to the girls and demanding the same about them.

"Those who have been chosen, follow me… and those who haven't can return home now." Genkai stated as she turned and started to walk away.

"Wait just a damn minute!" Two big men demanded of the much smaller, older woman. She turned back to face them as they continued to speak. "We're the rei experts from the nine regions! We came especially here and you let us draw lots!? What's the meaning of this!?"

"Ah! Some goons ten times the size of Master Genkai's is speaking their minds!"

"I can understand their feelings! To have been kicked out by drawing lots… What the meaning of this?"

"Think they'll hurt her?"

"No, she's not that weak; she may be an old woman, but Father claims that she is very powerful."

"Give us a reason at least!" one of the men demanded.

"If we're not satisfied with the reason, we won't spare you even if you're a master!" the other claimed and Sonja scoffed.

"You frustrating pieces of garbage! I let you go home in one piece and you want to go at it the hard way now? As rei experts, you couldn't even pick the correct lots? Go home and sleep!" the old lady snapped at them.

"Uu…! How dare you poke fun at us! Stupid old hag! Unforgivable!" The two lashed out at her.

"Ah! The two giants are angry! I don't know what powers that old granny has… but she's at a disadvantage on raw power alone!" Yusuke yelled and Sonja smirked as Lopt giggled. A burst of power with a "hah!" from Master Genkai later and the two giants were landing just before the gates.

"She… didn't even touch them!"

"The two giants just flew back like that!"

"Wow! I'm getting along in my years… If it had been before… I would have gotten rid of those guys by just staring at them. My reikohadou has deceased too. But at least you understand that real strength doesn't come from body size… and at least I know that those who passed were better than the two of them." Genkai said as she began to walk away again. "Don't stand there dumbfounded! Follow me!"

"She lives up to her reputation… scary!"

"So, did we come so you could learn from this lady?" Lopt asked, catching Yusuke's and Kuwabara's attention.

"No, I don't want to become her student, but she is the reason I'm here." Yusuke then tried to use the compass that Botan gave him only for it to… explode. They followed after the others as Lopt laughed at the destruction of the compass.

"About fifty or so! Quite a few people left!" Genkai commented about the group following her.

"Things have become totally unexpected!" Kuwabara stated.

"At least I know it isn't this idiot, or these two…" Yusuke muttered as he eyed Kuwabara, Sonja, and Lopt.

"What're you looking at, idiot?" Kuwabara asked.

"Yusuke, this is a job from Koenma?" Sonja asked. He looked at her and she rolled her eyes. "Just think what you want to say like you would say it to the person you want to mentally talk to, idiot."

"What the hell, Sonja!? Did Baby-breath send you too?

"Interesting nickname for the little lord, I'll have to remember it. And, no, Koenma didn't send me. I'm here on a personal matter."

"What -"

"The second test will take place here." Genkai stated as they all stopped before a set of double doors. Many exclaimed in surprise and disbelief as the sight of an arcade greeted them when the doors opened. "Come on in, Hurry up!" she ordered when people took too long to enter the room.

"The second test, just as your eyes have seen, are "Arcade Games"."

"Master, Pardon me, but… What does picking a disciple have to do with arcade games?" Someone asked.

"These aren't normal arcade games! They are machines that are able to investigate the true powers of a person. Without Rei abilities, you cannot get a high score in any game." She then motioned to three different games, explained what they tested, and what score you needed to pass. "Rock, Paper, Scissors determines one's Telepathic abilities. Telepathy: The sharpness of one's ability to use or feel rei weapons or curses. 15 rounds of finger guessing. 10 wins to pass."

"The punching game determines one's Agility. Agility: Strength of one's rei attack or split second sudden attacks. 3 punches are allowed. 120 is the passing mark."

"And Karaoke was specially designed to determine one's spirit flow, Reiki. Reiki: The spirit flow hidden within one's body = strength of one's will to live. 1 time challenge only. 70 points to pass."

"And what about this soccer games, what does it determine?" Yusuke asked.

"All the other games are my interests. From these three games, if you are unable to pass two, you're out! Ah! And one more thing. You have to put in a hundred yen before taking the challenge."

"You money-faced old granny!" Yusuke replied as the woman walked away.

Lopt giggled, "So, Sonja, why are we here?"

Sonja glanced at the cat girl before turning and walking towards Genkai. "Shishou (Master/Teacher)."

Genkai stopped and turned to face the auburn haired girl behind her. "I'm not-"

"You are not my teacher or master, I get that. I thought you'd prefer that than me calling you "-san" or "Obaasan (Grandmother)"." Sonja replied. "May I speak with you about an important matter?"

"Hmm. What about?" Genkai asked as she took a better look at the girl before her.

"I am not here to be your disciple. Rather," she paused, unsure how to say what she wanted without those within eavesdropping distance figuring it out. After a moment, she shook her head and continued. "I was asked to come to see you on behalf of… a mutual… relation… that we share."

One of Genkai's eyebrows rose at her statement. "And who is this relation?"

"Mochi, he married into the Leonhart family." Genkai paused, she had been watching those that were actually taking the second test, and turned her attention back to the girl before her. "He is your son, right?" She pulled a picture out of the purse she carried and handed it over to the older woman, who studied the family photo.

A man, about Genkai's own height, stood next to a grown woman and an eleven year old girl. The man had pinkish-brown-black hair – a weird color combination that she had only seen on one individual – cut short and slicked back, brown eyes set under uber bushy eyebrows that matched his hair in color, a kind of hawkish shaped nose set below his eyes, and a mustache that matched his eyebrows and hair in color under his nose. He was dressed in a black suit with a light blue shirt and a dark blue tie. The grown woman and the girl had the same hair color, auburn, and eye color, purple. The older of the two was dressed in a simple but elegant blue dress with matching shoes and earrings. She and the man were holding hands and wedding rings and an engagement ring could be seen. The younger girl was dressed like her mother but instead of in blue, she wore green. On the girl's other side was a five year old boy dressed similarly to his father, and like his sister wore green instead of blue. The siblings could have been twins in not for the age difference between them. Genkai had flipped the photo over at one point to see that the names of the individuals as well as their ages and a date were listed.

Mochi Leonhart, Age: 42

Vivian Leonhart, Age: 41

Renee Leonhart, Age: 11

Hikaru Leonhart, Age: 5

The date was from 7 years ago, or it would be in a few days.

Genkai looked up from the picture. Sonja had thought it over, while her grandmother looked over the picture, and had decided that it didn't really matter if someone knew. "My name is Renee Leonhart, though to those that know of the supernatural know me as "Sonja". And, Mochi, is my Dad."

"So why did my son not inform me to the fact that I had grandchildren?"

"Maybe for the same reason he waited to tell me I had a grandmother." Sonja replied with a sigh. "I only learnt about you the night before I came to Japan."
