Chapter Two

Morning arrived much too early for the young adventurer as she groaned against the bright light which shone only, if not directly, into her eyes. Her bed had grown warm overnight, and she snuggled into the heat. Sighing contently she rested her head against her body pillow, mentally taking a moment to thank herself for buying the unbelievably comfortable article. Only after a moment did the blonde remember she had never purchased such an item, and after a second moment of thought realized Cake had never said anything about one.

Opening her eye just enough to examine the pillow she held so tightly, she nearly shrieked. It wasn't a pillow – but a sleeping Marshall Lee! Immediately she scurried away, only to find she was unable to do so. She was caught in the vampire king's iron grip. Fionna began to struggle against the raven haired male's hold, but found it was little use.

"Marshall Lee!" She shouted, struggling to kick the vampire, "Let. Go!" Her demands were cut short as he tugged her forward, muffling her words against his shirt.

"Too loud, bunny." The half-demon muttered, twisting at the sudden verbal onslaught. "Sshhhh, sleeping." The young blue-eyed girl twitched in annoyance, turning ever so slightly before screaming into his ear.

"Marshall Lee! Get you buns out'ta my bed!" The vampire's response was instantaneous, as he startled and grabbed onto her tighter, momentarily disoriented. Set off balance by the sudden awakening he could do nothing as they both went tumbling off the edge of her bed, landing with a crash on the wooden floor.

Bemoaning his pain Marshall Lee released Fionna and she wasted no time extracting herself from his grasp. Delivering a sharp kick to his side did not help the vampire in his recovery. Nor did it help Fionna when the male snagged her ankle and with a twist of his wrist brought her to the ground once more, where it was her turn to groan in pain.

"The fuzz, Marshall Lee?" The adventurer glared at her rouge friend who finally was able to recover enough to pull himself to his feet. Whether out of kindness or apology – or perhaps his hand had simply found its way around her wrist – the vampire lifted the hero from the ground, tossing her ungracefully onto her mattress. Floating above her bed in amusement Marshall Lee watched the disgruntled girl as she struggled to free herself of the hold her hair had found on her.

Shock hit the young girl like lightning, and she stilled in her surprise.

"Something wrong, Fi?" The vampire tugged a strand of hair that somehow resulted in freeing her of her knotted confines. In a sudden panic the young girl stood and began searching her room first by sight and then resorting to hand. Marshall Lee was forced to float out of the way, lest he be caught by a stray fist – which to his luck was curled in something akin to a fist.

"Oh Glob!" The young girl cried, moving her searched from her room to her bathroom, before migrating to her living room. "Where did he go? Glob, glob... Mar Mar!" The blonde heroine continued to thunder about her home in search of the vanished Mar Mar until her vampire friend floated, upside down, into her field of vision. The answer to the bat's disappearance clicked, and she tackled the vampire, much to his surprise.

"Marshall Lee, what did you do with Mar Mar?" Fionna demanded, punching the vampire for kidnapping the tiny bat. "Where is he?" She frowned at the boy who whined about unwarranted blows.

"I didn't do anything to your stinkin' bat." He scoffed, and was rewarded with a knee to the stomach.

"Don't mess around, dude! Mar Mar's hurt, tell me what you did to him!" Fionna growled angrily. Marshall Lee muttered a begrudging 'course he is, you keep hitting him' before grabbing the young blonde's arms, flipping them so he had her pinned. "Hey, let me go you turd!" He glared.

"If I let you go you'll punch me again."

"No," She assured, "I won't."

"...promise?" Fionna nodded, and he tentatively released her, backing up slightly. She kicked him. "Ow!"

"Give Mar Mar back!"

"I don't have your damn Mar Mar!" The vampire responded for the up-tenth time, throwing his hands into the air. Fionna paused, looking at him strangely, and he stilled as well, returning her stare with one of his own. "What?"

"What's 'damn'?" Fionna inquired, and he simply blinked. She kicked him again.

"Will you stop that!" He cried in aggravation, "I don't have your bat! I swear!" Again she paused in her assault, taking a moment to evaluate him.

"Really?" She asked, sounding unsure. Marshall Lee sighed.

"Really." A moment of silence.

"How do you know Mar Mar's a bat?" She question, a hint of suspicion in her tone. The raven haired vampire rolled his eyes and crossed his arms across his chest, not meeting her gaze, mumbling an answer. "What?" The vampire king growled, clearly irritated.

"Last night I ran into a vanghoul out in the Spooky Forest." He grumbled. "I was in bat form, and before I tossed into a pond he scratched me with one of its poison claws." He deflated, clearly not wishing to share this particular story with his adventure friend. "It has magic dampening properties and... I ended up," he winced, "tiny."

"What does that have to do with Mar Mar?" She paused a moment, considering his story and he waited patiently for her to connect the dots. A light went off in her head, and it clicked. "You're Mar Mar?" She looked him over, and quickly noticed a series of healing scratches, just barely noticeable due to his fast healing.

"So you'll stop hitting me?" The onyx haired male deadpanned. Fionna grew red, and nodded sheepishly, fumbling over an apology. She jerked away from the vampire when a finger flicked across her forehead, and she was forgiven.

"I'm hungry." Marshall Lee commented as he floated into her kitchen, pilfering through her fridge for any appetizing shades of red. Pulling out a bowl of strawberries with one hand he turned, kicking the door closed. At the same time Fionna's stomach began to grumble, and she followed closely behind, but chose a bowl of cereal over his strawberries.

The two lounged on the living room sofa, although Marshall Lee, as usual, resided three feet higher than the sofa's usual occupant. The vampire popped a strawberry into his mouth as Fionna took a bite of her cereal. A moment later he sniggered when a pasty white bounced against the girl's blonde locks. The adventurer screeched in disgust, swatting at the teasing male.

"So what should we do today?" Fionna contemplated not long after, munching on her last bite of frosted flakes. Marshall Lee shrugged as he tossed the last of his strawberries over his shoulder, ringing the trashcan.

"Monster hunting in the Spooky Forest again?" He suggested before yawning and laying back. "Then again, I was actually sleeping when you woke me up. The sun doesn't set for another six hours or so." Again a blush spread across the adventurer's cheeks, and she apologized a second time for her mistake.

"I can go for another few hours of sleep," She spoke thoughtfully, tapping her chin her the spoon, and then turned it on Marshall Lee, pointing accusingly, "But stay off my bed!" She demanded, and was meet with laughter. He brushed off her thread, gliding into the kitchen to set the now-empty bowl next to the sink, where a sizable number of dishes had begun to gather.

"Sure, sure." He winked, "Unless you get cold, I don't mind." Scowling Fionna threw her spoon at the vampire, who casually caught the silverware and tossed it into the sink, raising a brow. Huffing Fionna pushed herself off of the couch, stacking her bowl with his before starting to climb up into her room. She paused at the bottom, mentally groaning at the forming bruises that seemed to cover nearly every inch of her body.

Hands slipped under her arms, and gently she was picked up and lifted up into her bedroom. Glancing over her shoulder at the coy Marshall Lee she stuck her tongue out, allowing for a thank you before bouncing over to her bed. Her bed was soft, and it did not take long to become tired once again. Yawning she glanced in the direction she had last seen Marshall Lee, but did not see him.

"Mar?" She called sleepily, "Where'd you go?" There was a slight 'pop' and the vampire appeared startlingly close to her, and she quickly moved to put distance between them.

"You gotta cut out that Mar Mar stuff, Fi." The half-demon grumbled, making himself at home on her bed, tucking his arms behind his head and closing his eyes. "Totally not cool." The blonde laughed at his distaste and after a moment of deliberation decided to allow the vampire to remain where he lay. For now.

"I don't see what's so bad, it's cute."Fionna teased, giggling as he blanched at the description. "Maybe I should call you that from now on. How about it, Mar Mar?" She asked, wiggling her eyebrows. The vampire growled shaking his head and poking the girl in the stomach.

"Don't even think about it." He warned, "Or I'll drop you off a cliff." Her eyes widened and she sat up excitedly.

"Will you? I bet that would be so awesome!" She replied in wonderment, stars in her eyes, "I bet it would be like flying. Is it?" She questioned eagerly. Marshall Lee watched her with a raised eyebrow as she thought giddily how fun it might be to fly, which led to talk about flying into space, and the moon. From there the conversation turned to the moon's composition, primarily if it was made of swish cheese as Cake had led her to believe.

"You're not normal, you know that?" Marshall Lee commented, pulling Fionna from her musing. He nearly fell over when she frowned at the statement, becoming cross.

"What fun is it being 'normal'?" She demanded, tucking her arms together. "I'd stay at home all day being a boring lump on a log." Rolling his eyes he pulled her rabbit eared hat from thin air, shoving it over her head. Only until then did she remember she hadn't been wearing it the rest of the day.

"No fun at all, for sure." He agreed absentmindedly, "If you were I won't bother hanging out with you. I may be immortal, but I only spend my time rocking, pranking, and having fun." He took a moment to yawn, before leaning back further.

"And sleeping." Fionna added.

"And sleeping." The vampire king agreed.

"So are you gonna be here all week?" The blue eyed girl asked hopefully, yawning as she did so.

"'Course, Cake's gone all week. Gotta make the best of the time we've got, right?"

"Right." She yawned. "But Cake's still awesome."

"Yeah, yeah. If you say so." Fionna didn't bother arguing, already fast asleep. Opening an eye a slit, Marshall Lee examined the blonde a short moment before closing it again, a smile creeping onto his face. He reached over, carefully pulling the adventurer closer, who in turn rested her head against his shoulder.

"G'morning, Fi." He yawned, and was meet with a light snore.
