Chapter 10

A year later…

Jenny sat alone in the NCIS bullpen, her team, the same team it had been a year ago, a group of people she came so close to, they were her friends and along with Gibbs' team were her newly acquired family.

Gibbs, she smiled as she thought about him, things between them were going very well, they like any couple had ups and downs, fought like there was not tomorrow with both their stubborn attitudes colliding but it was amazing when they made up and they always did.

She loved him and she knew he loved her, it was something they had said a couple of times but both preferred to show each other how they felt. Jenny had a feeling that it would last with him, it had been a year so far and she couldn't see them breaking up anymore.

No one but Ducky knew that they were together, they knew it was against the rules and so decided it would be better not to say anything and not risk the punishment of them being together, them being split up or worse.

Ducky only knew because he walked in on them working on the boat in Gibbs' basement, he hadn't been surprised at all, he'd noticed how they had spoken to each other, the secret glances, the rate at which they both seemed to go through sticky notes, although Ducky still didn't get that part but he thought it had something to do with secret messages.

Jenny looked at the gap in the divider, it was their secret message way, opening one of her desk draw she smiled at the pile of used sticky notes each one covered in Gibbs' curly script, telling her something or other.

Gibbs wasn't exactly out for lunch like Jenny or in fact any of his team thought, actually he went out for coffee then to pick something up.

He walked back into the NCIS building, a cup of coffee in his hand, he stepped into the elevator, his hand going to touch the black velvet box in his pocket, he'd just picked it up from a small jewellers in a quiet part of Washington D.C.

Moments later the door opened on the floor for autopsy, he walked out, throwing his now empty cup of coffee in the bin on the way to the autopsy room, then the double door opened to reveal Ducky sitting at his desk, writing a report.

The older ME looked up at Gibbs "Ah Jethro, what can I do for you?" he asked him, a smile on his face.

Gibbs made sure the doors were closed before pulling out the black velvet box and opened it to show a simple yet elegant. "Really Jethro, I thought you were still with Jenny" Ducky joked.

Gibbs gave him a small glare "I'm going to ask her to Marry me, what do you think?" he asked his friend.

"I think it's about time" Ducky chuckled at Gibbs. "Although I wonder if it something you want or if its something you feel obligated to do"

"What do you mean Duck?" Gibbs' asked, feeling kind of annoyed at what he was saying.

"I mean, you and Jennifer have been together for a year now, today being your anniversary I believe and by now with your past relationships you have already proposed or in your case with Diane you were already married, perhaps you do not actually want to marry Jenny, you just feel like you have to" he explained then saw the look on Gibbs' face "I just don't want this to end badly and have you and Jenny hurt, she doesn't deserve it"

"I love her Ducky" Gibbs told him "She's nothing like the others, I won't let it end like the others, she means to much to me" he continued, his voice a little risen.

"That's all I wanted to hear" Ducky grinned "Any idea how you're going to pop the question?" he asked.

"I'm going to take her out for dinner, go for a walk, I'm not sure, just get her relaxed and at ease and then surprised her" Gibbs said never really being one to plan a proposal, he didn't want anything too flashy and outgoing as he knew that Jenny wasn't the type of person, she was like him, more private about her life.

"I'm sure she'll say yes" Ducky smiled at him before Gibbs nodded and then he left. He just hopped Ducky was right about her saying yes.

Jenny looked up from her seat as Gibbs walked out of the elevator, they had an almost uncanny way of knowing when the other was near.

They eyes locked in an almost intense way, blue looking into green and green looking into blue. Gibbs noticed no one else was around so went straight over to her, "Hello Agent Shepard, how are you?" he asked her.

"I'm good agent Gibbs, how are you?" she asked him.

"m' fine" he grumbled, not allowing himself to be nice to her, otherwise it might be too obvious.

"Do you have a case?" she asked him after a moment.

"No, I don't, how about you?" he asked her, wanting her to say no, wanting them both to be able to leave at a normal time so they could go to dinner at a reasonable time and he didn't have to wait as long to 'pop' the question.

"No I don't" Jenny eyes him suspiciously, seeing something in his shiny blue eyes that he wasn't telling her.

"Okay, well looks like we can both lave on time for once" He shrugged and then began to move to his own desk on the other side of the divider as people began to come back from their lunch break.

Moments later Jenny was sitting at her desk, looking at her emails when she heard something being pushed through the cap in the divider, she looked up to see a neon pink post it note sticking through the crack.

She smiled before picking it up and opening it reading it: dinner tonight x, she traced the kiss before getting another note and writing her reply before pushing it through the gap. Upon reading her answer Gibbs looked over the divider and then smiled at her over it. Neither could wait for tonight.

Little did they both know that they would remember tonight for the rest of their lives. Not only would it be the night he proposed to her, not only would it be the night they conceived their first child together, but it was a night that would mark the beginning of a new life together.

The end….

I'm in a foreign state
My thoughts they slip away
My words are leaving me
They caught an aeroplane
Because I thought of you
Just from the thought of you

Oh lights go down
In the moment we're lost and found
I just wanna be by your side
If these wings could fly
Oh damn these walls
In the moment we're ten feet tall
And how you told me after it all
We'd remember tonight
For the rest of our lives – Wings by Birdy
