Chapter 13: The Once and Future Spidey
Part 2
'Have you ever had life throw you a curve ball and think, "Oh that's not too bad."? Then that curve ball starts trying to tan your hide with energy whips. Kinda throws that whole thought out the window and onto the street.'
"What did I do? Did I miss a birthday? QuinceaƱera? Raggedy Anne convention? Seriously, I can't apologize for something I don't know is gonna happen in the future." Spider-Man rambles off worriedly mid back flip. He lands in a crouch stance as his two supposed future granddaughters rush him.
"Nana always did say you were a motor mouth." Delilah smirks as she back swings her whip at him. Spidey bends his torso to the left, narrowly avoiding the crack of her weapon. His sixth sense ramps up and his body instinctively steps back and turns sideways, throwing his arms up. The yellow of the second whip shines off his white lenses as it falls down mere inches in front of his face. The yellow rope strikes the pavement with a zap, leaving a black burn mark in it's place.
"Was it a compliment or insult? I'm trying to narrow the list of ladies who could put up with me long enough to start a family." The Web Head turns to see the grinning twins both jump impressively high into the air, whip arms pulling back for another strike. 'Definitely my descendents.' Peter thinks a bit prouder than he should be at the moment, and he leaps up to meet them.
This catches the two off guard as he 'Gently.' clotheslines the teens, one in each arm, mid air. Instead of following through, he curls his arms spinning both girls around, effectively head locking them before they land. Once landed, he 'Gently.' applies a bit of pressure to immobilize them.
"Nana Harley wasn't wrong about how nimble you were either. Said she had all sorts of fun trying to pin you down." Deidre compliments from his left arm, the innuendo making Peter rather uncomfortable at that moment.
"Me and Harley?!" His mask's eyes going almost as wide as his face. A moment later his lenses shrink as he looks between the two girls, whom aren't really struggling against his hold. "You know considering your state of dress I probably should have been able to guess that." Peter says monotonously.
"We do very much take after Nana." The right Dee Dee admits, as she and her twin turn their heads simultaneously to look at their grandfather's masked face.
"Almost too much she tells us." The left Dee Dee adds, and they both smirk playfully, their gray eyes full of mischief.
Spider-Sense!
In unison his granddaughters dropped their respective right and left foot onto both Spidey's, drilling their heels hard. Immediately Spider-Man seizes in pain, his body going rigid, and his left lens twitching violently along with his eye. "YEEEOW!" He shrieks in pain, as his arms loosen around the girls.
They take the chance and flip forward out of the hold. As they do their inner feet heels back kick into his jaw, almost making the hero bite his tongue. He's knocked onto his ass a few feet away. Surprisingly both his jaw and feet throb in pain.
In harmony the Dee Dee's gracefully hand spring and twirl in the air. The yellow energy whips spiral around their lithe bodies, accentuating their display. They land and face Spidey so perfectly a seasoned Olympic gymnast would be envious, whips splaying around them harmlessly. It was like watching a perfectly choreographed dance. Their gray eyes shine with playful arrogance at their ancestor, who is currently on his keister.
'Wow... I mean owwww. I actually felt that. They are way stronger than they appear.' Peter thinks with a mixture of pride and surprise, as he rubs his jaw. He hops to his tender feet and readies himself, this time with much more caution. If he had to guess they were holding back, just like him.
"Something wrong Grandpa Peter? Does he seem a bit tired to you Dee Dee?" Deidre's smile widens and she cracks her whip to her side, readying it.
"He does Dee Dee. Time must be catching up with him." Delia finishes, mirroring her sister and together they giggle. The two flip forward and continue their assault.
'Probably inherited the puns from me. So why are we fighting?'
"If you really are my Grandkids then why are you working with the bad guy?" Spider-Man asks out loud to the teen girls as he nimbly dodges their energy whip strikes.
Their attacks are dangerously in synch, and their tag team strategy was putting the pressure on even his reflexes. What really worries Peter him is that they also seemed to be matching his speed whenever he would ramp his own up. If he had a guess they were holding back on that too.
Both girls' expressions read as dangerously excited. Their smiles relayed their intent desire to do him actual harm. 'Are they being brain washed? Seriously what happened to them?!' Was all Peter could wonder.
"We've been waiting..." Delia says front flipping to gain ground on him. She stops and her sister Deidre hand springs up into the air from behind to land on her sister's shoulders. Both teens extend out their whip arms.
"For this day." Deidre finishes and leaps off her sibling's shoulders high into the air. She whips the extendable energy rope down at Spidey. Quickly he back flips away as the tip cuts into the road like a knife through butter. When he stops Delia is right there in front of him, bringing her whip down at him.
On reflex Peter grabs her weapon wrist with his left hand, and open palm strikes with his right. Even pulling his punch, his hit connects hard with her chest and sends her flying back. Immediately he panics reeling back his right arm, and bringing both hands up toward his masked mouth.
"Oh crap! I didn't mean too, I'm so sorry!" He freaks as he watches his supposed granddaughter hit the road, and suddenly there was another one of her rolling right along side the downed girl. Spider-Man's lenses stretch open max, as the two Delia break their fall expertly, and roll to a crouch.
'Oooookay WHAT?!.' Peter drops his hands, seeing double in triplicate.
Spider-Sense!
"How could you hit your own grandkid?" Deidre says with an appalled tone. Peter looks above him, seeing her drop from the sky. Her right heel kick aiming for his head. Spider-Man throws his arms up above his head in a cross block, catching her heel there. His legs bend a bit under the kick's force, his muscles straining slightly from it. 'Yup, way stronger then they let on.'
"I'm not trying to..." The Wall Crawler grunts and pushes the teen's leg off him, throwing her off balance, and back into the air. "... but you're not leaving me many opt..." Spider-Sense!
"Excuses, excuses." Two voices sing song playfully at the same time directly in front of him. 'Wh... how'd they get so close?!' Delia and her copy sink their boots into his chest with mirrored kicks. Spidey's lenses bulge, and he's staggered back a few feet.
'OWWW! That spot's still really tender from earlier. Whyaiaiai?' He whimpers mentally, but manages to get his feet under him, and stop his backpedal, when his Spider-Sense fires off again.
Looking up he sees the business end of a whip curling toward him a foot from his face. Peter limbos backward with ease, but not before seeing one of the Delia's appear to have tossed something in the air. 'Okay I saw the whip coming a mile away, so why...' His vision catches the whip cracking, and being recoiled quickly.
SPIDER-SENSE!
"Oh. Crap." He manages before a laughing Deidre diving dropkicks his chest, smashing him down into the road. Upon impact with his back he feels the cement crack a bit, and his back protests from the strain.
His granddaughter crouches down on his torso in a pose he's all to familiar with. While smiling down at the pinned man, she places her right hand flat over the spider emblem on his chest. Her smile turns into a neutral line as she looks at the symbol under her hand. Peter blinks behind his mask at the sudden shift in attitude.
"Never liked spiders." Deidre says somber, almost contemplative. When she looks back up at his face her impish smile returns. Two sets of feet stop on either side of him, and the awkward situation is joined by her twin and the copy twin.
"Fitting it's under your boot then, isn't it Dee Dee?" The standing Delia's say together, their whip humming on the ground at their sides. Peter tries to move to his arms, but finds it difficult to pull them off the ground for some reason. It's an odd sensation, almost like when he's sticking to surfaces, but he's not in control of it.
"Agreed Dee Dee. Though I think he's got a bit of fight left in him." Deidre sits up strait, still on his chest, and crosses her arms.
"Then we better wear him out some more, Dee Dee." The Delia's both nod in agreement, and they press a button on their whip handles. The energy ropes crackle louder as more power is sent into them. Peter's sixth sense drums in the back of his head, letting him know those would really hurt now.
"Grandpa thinks the Dee Dee's should be good girls and stop threatening his life now." Peter compromises wheezily, his chest killing him from the repeated assaults. "What would Grandma think of this behavior?"
That question seemed to touch a nerve. The Dee Dees' piercing gray eyes focused hard on him. They looked down at Peter, a calm anger on their identical faces. Deidre leans forward again, frowning and grabbing a handful of his suit at his collar. Suddenly he feels some give in his limbs again.
"All of this is for her." She says with narrowed eyes. Spidey banks on the too focused girl, and grabs her arms before kneeing her in the rump enough to thrown her from him. "Whoa!" The teen cries as she smacks into the ground. Like with her sibling a copy of her separates upon impact, and the two roll away.
The Delia's take a step back in surprise, but quickly regroup and ready their whips. From his laying position he aims both wrists up and sticks a web strand to each of their whip hands. Crossing his arms fast the two are yanked into each other, and smacks their foreheads together. As they stumble back, Spidey cuts the lines, and throws himself forward onto his feet. The Delia fall back on their asses, and two more pop into existence.
Before any of his six granddaughters can recover he fires a line toward the nearest lamppost, and hauls himself up to it. Grabbing the neck of the lamp in both hands he swings himself up, and lands expertly on top of the neck in a squat. Spider-Sense! The Webhead ducks forward as a growling and snarling tangle of two people soar just overhead.
Snapping his neck up he sees John's quote unquote son grappling with the Hyena man while trying to maintain flight.
"Get offa me you splicer reject!" The black winged Thanagarian roars out.
"You I have no qualms with hitting." Spider-Man cheers and fires a line at the Hyena. He tags the mutt in the back and yanks the line. With a surprised yelp the future dog guy is ripped from his prey and soars backward. Spider-Man cuts the line and hops backward off the lamp post, only to grab the neck in passing and swinging forward feet first.
To the Hyena man's credit his reflexes allowed him to spin in the air, and go to cut the line with his metal claws. Too bad this just gives the hero a good view of the expression he makes when two feet ram into his gut. The hybrid's cheeks bulged and a brief whine escapes his maw with his tongue. The next second the splicer is soaring back down the road.
"I had him!" Shouted the angry bird-man, as he turned back after watching his opponent fly above him. Spider-Man swings himself forward with ease, and lands on the lamppost again. Quirking his head to the side his lenses indicate confusion.
"And then I had him. It's not a competition kid." Peter rolls his eyes, noticing a trend with Thanagarians and battle.
Spider-Sense!
"Behind you!" The hawkman shouts, flying toward the spandex clad hero. Peter leaps off the post just before two energy whips slice cleanly through the metal. Slinging a web to the nearest building Spidey pulls himself to a large pane window a story up, sticking to it on all fours. Looking back at where he was just perched he sees the future hero clothesline two of the twins.
Since taking his eyes off his descendants for a few seconds he's not sure if they are copies or the real deal. Either way he feels a sudden spike of irrational anger shoot through him. "Hey! Those are my granddaughters you're manhandling!" The Wall Crawler shouts indignantly before he can stop himself. What's more his fist shakes down at younger man. 'Old Man Spidey here.'
The winged man curves up in the air dropping the two, and turns to look incredulously at Spidey. "And they've killed my friends, so slag off." Warhawk barks back.
That throws Peter for a loop. 'They've killed...' His fist lowers back to stick to the window.
Spider-Sense!
"Get ready to be squashed bug!" Parker turns to see the fat pink clown with a ball for legs rolling up the side of the building toward him. He spins his double bladed energy staff in his hand, and raises it above his head.
"I see another one failed elementary biology." Spider-Man kids as he leans back and extends both wrists, firing dual web lines toward the clown. To his surprise the human half flies up away from the still moving ball, making the lines miss.
"What in the..." Spidey says jarred by the disconcerting maneuver. The clown laughs as he starts to descend down at the hero, weapon raised. Looking up Spidey readies to punch the wayward youth...
Spider-Sense!
"HuOOOMPH!" The speeding ball slams into Spider-Man's chest with enough force to knock the wind out of him, and him off the window. As he falls toward the ground with the ball firmly planted against him, the rest of the clown reconnects, adding more weight and speed to the drop.
Spider-Sense!
The story up doesn't last long enough for the hero to react accordingly. 'This is gonna hurt.' Gritting his teeth in prep, he expects this to hurt. To add insult to intended injury the fat clown fires the ball away from him at the last six feet, hurling Spider-Man into the pavement faster. The cement cracks into a large web on impact with the falling heroes back. A half second later the clown gang member lands back on the ball, driving him further into ground.
White hot pain fires through every nerve, as his abused chest takes even further punishment. Spidey hacks out a mixture of air, spittle, and a bit of blood into his mask. Groaning in pain, he goes to grab the ball and throw it off of him, when it rolls down his body. The heavy ball intentionally rolls over his crotch, immediately making Peter forget his chest pain. "OWW!"
Quickly curling into the fetal position he holds his nethers in his hands, and flops on his side. "Ohhh my tenders." He squeaks out in a high pitched voice. Spider-Man whimpers, trembling as he tries to push past the horrible agony.
"Oh don't worry bug. I'll put you out of your misery real quick." Aiming one of the dangerous ends of his weapon down at the incapacitated time traveler, he readies the killing blow.
"HE'S OURS!" Nearly a dozen of the same voice shout at the same time, and two white figures drop kick the clown away from Spider-Man. The next thing he knows Peter is surrounded by four kneeling Dee Dee's, all with concerned expressions on their painted faces.
Spidey's lenses blink out of rhythm as his focus returns, and his granddaughters come into view.
"You dreg, you could have ended our existence!" One of the drop kick twins berate the clown.
"Did Chronos remove your brain with your legs?" The other drop kick twin adds angrily, pointing threateningly at him.
"You didn't even tell us he was your grandfather until five minutes ago, how was I supposed to know!" The big guys tries to defend.
"You tell'em girls." Spider-Man says with less strain, and frees a hand to weakly fist pump.
"Mind if I cut in?" Diana announces as she bowls over the collected Dee Dees, scooping up Spidey along the way. The two turn skyward, looking to take the fight out of their opponent's territory.
Spider-Sense!
"Diana!" He warns looking down at the incoming threat. The double bladed weapon of the Ball Clown spins up toward them. Diana turns around and lets go of Peter with one hand. She brings up her magic bracer up to block, and she gets the shock of her life, literally. On impact the energy weapon electrocutes her past her mystic defense, and by extension the passenger in her grasp. Both heroes let out a surprised shout.
Involuntarily the Princess lets go of the Wallcrawler, and both drop toward the ground from a good two hundred feet up. Spidey shakes his head clearing it, and looks over to his fellow League member. Before he can act the new Batman swoops in and catches her bridal style, stopping in a hover.
"Spidey." A familiar, but older, voice calls from behind the falling hero. Atop an electrically charged saucer is the older Static Shock. He flies toward Peter with a hand extended down. Spider-Man grabs the passing hand, and the two begin hover up next to Batman and Diana. The Amazonian is able to float herself now, having shaken off the stun.
"Thanks, Watt-son. Loving the beard by the way." Spider-Man says as his mask's eyes look up toward the Bang Baby hero.
"Thanks Webs. Though it's really Watt-age now." Virgil Hawkins says with a stupid grin on his face.
"..." Spidey stares at the aged hero for a few awkward moments, then slaps a hand over his masked face. "That pun hurt me more than anything else today."
"I can let you fall back to the wolves if you want." Static deadpans.
"I'd welcome it if you are still using puns that bad." Peter shoots back, and the two share a smirk.
'Virgil Hawkins, aka Static Shock, was once a smart teen from Dakota City. Like me he was given powers from an accident. Only his accident was on a much wider scale and infected many more people, while killing even more. They called it the Big Bang, and the people infected, Bang Babies. An interesting choice of vernacular since most changed were young gang members and teens.'
'In my time Virgil is still in high school, but helps protect the city of Dakota with several other Bang Babies, and the occasional support of veteran heroes. He is also a reserve roster hero for the Titans. Small world huh? He's a good kid, smart too, and I enjoyed hanging out with him the few times we did over this last year. I see a lot of me in him when I was that age.'
"Guys if we could please focus on the task at hand. Your Lantern and Warhawk are still down there." The younger sounding Batman says, interrupting the heartwarming reunion.
"Right... Hey quick question." Spider-Man asks unconcerned with the previous statement. His gaze meets the new age Dark Knight's. The black clad hero's eyes narrow in response, but he's silent as he waits for the question.
"You're a different Batman right? Like your not the same guy in a younger body or something like that?" Peter asks actually curious about the answer. He sounds different true, but Batman has pulled off crazy miracles in the past.
"Are you seriously..." Batman is interrupted as he puts his fingers to his ear. "Right boss man." He acknowledges the person on the other end and grabs something from his utility belt. 'BOSS!? Batman is taking orders from someone, and calling them boss! Who in the multi-verse gives Batman orders?' Tossing a small rectangular device, Spidey catches it, and looks quizzically up at him. Batman motions to put it against his ear, and Peter follows suit.
"Stop messing around and do your job. We need to regroup back at base." A gruff old voice says from the communicator. A voice Peter could never mistake no matter how much time has passed. His lenses go wide in amazement.
"Well that makes sense. Who else would Batman call boss." Spidey says aloud, shaking his head.
"I'm not losing anymore people because of your lackadaisical attitude. Get the rest of the team and get out of there." The voice on the other end commands with an authority that could only be Batman's. Specifically the Batman of Peter's time. Despite this the severity in his voice wiped any antics or banter from Parker's mind. It was time to be Spider-Man, not your friendly neighborhood Spidey.
"Gotcha, Boss Man." Spider-Man replies back in a semi-serious tone, which catches Diana off guard. She blinks at the sudden change in attitude of her ally's. 'Who uses lackadaisical, really?' He thinks to himself incredulously.
"Okay people let's get our guys and pull a tactical retreat for now. Bats, Princess you get Birdman. Static your with me." Spidey says as he tosses the communicator back to Batman, and lets go of Static's hand. The three quickly follow the falling man, Diana still baffled by his sudden seriousness.
"Who was he speaking with? Nary but a few could sway Spider-Man so entirely like this." Wonder Woman asks with the wind rushing past her, as they plummet toward the fighting in the streets.
"My boss has that way with people." Batman says and throws both his arms forward.
Spider-Man fires a line to the side of a building and starts an arcing swing. 'Do I finally get to see who it was under the cowl? I can't wait!' He inwardly shouts in excitement.
Spider-Sense!
The trick or treat themed Scarecrow guy tosses his pumpkin pale into the air toward the group, which explodes into a shower of sparkling balls of light. "Look out!" Static shouts from above, and fires bolts of electricity in front of Spidey and the heroes, which tag a few lights and arc to many more. The lights detonate and explode in front of them. Luckily the mini light bombs were far enough to avoid real damage, but the force of the blasts blow the group apart, and send Spider-Man backward right into Static.
With and oomph Spidey knocks Static off his disk, and they fall uncontrolled to the ground. Peter spins during the fall and grabs Virgil, moving the older man on top of him. He uses his body to cushion the impact, knowing he'd be able to take it, but uncertain if his aged friend could. His back hammers the sidewalk again, and the two bounce once into a large bolted down trashcan.
"Did you get heavier?" Parker asks with a groan, letting Hawkins fall from his hold. 'OWW! That's the third time tonight I've fallen on my back. Gonna need to see a Chiropractor after this.' The electric hero rolls to a knee quickly, but pauses before standing, his old age showing a bit.
"Did you get slower?" Virgil shoots back, shaking his head and finally standing.
Spider-Sense!
The sound of buzz saw makes Spidey force himself up quicker. The two men see the burly gray teen and the scarecrow guy running at them. The big guy now has a huge mallet raised in the air where his right hand used to be, and the skinny guy has a spinning saw where his left hand once was.
"Is this the future's version of pieced eyebrows or something?! Hue hue I'mma get a surgically implanted buzzsaw, all the kids are doing it." Spider-Man asks aghast as he fires two lines at Scarecrow. The lines are cut away in flight by the surprisingly fast teen. Similarly Static Shock launches two bolts of electricity at Strongman, and they are somehow stopped and collected by his mallet hand spinning rapidly. Thinking quickly Peter grabs the heavily dented trashcan behind him and rips it off it's hinges, then throwing it at his the thin teen ahead of him.
Scarecrow stops and brings his saw up defensively in front of him. The box is easily sliced in two, garbage flying everywhere, the teen's smirking face can be seen behind flying wrappers.
"Your gonna have to try harder old man." Webs stick to both of Scarecrow's legs, and he's tossed up into the air by Spider-Man.
"Whoa... WHOA!" The Scarecrow wannabe flails for a brief second before being slammed back down to earth. The wind gets knocked out of the kid, and Spidey lets go of the lines.
"Why is everyone saying that?! I'm in my late twenties at worst." Peter huffs out indignantly, hands on his hips.
"Little help, old man." Virgil shouts as he's being forced back by the Strongman, who's absorbing his electricity.
"Stop calling me old!" Peter shouts and readies to help his friend.
Spider-Sense!
Backpedaling one step he avoids a whip tearing his right foot off. "Okay young ladies I'm getting a little tired of thi...s." His lenses shrink in dismay when he turns as he sees a small platoon of Dee Dees approaching him.
"But we've got so much catching up to do." The horde of Dee Dees say in unison, just before darting toward him. They came at him from almost every side... but up.
"Exit, stage anywhere but here." The Web Slinger calls out in slight panic, and fires a web line to the nearest building.
Spider-Sense!
Just as he pulls himself about ten feet off the ground his webbing is sliced apart by an energy rope.
"Where do you think your going Gramps!" Two of the girls say as they both jump up, and drop kick their grandfather mid fall. His sixth sense doesn't even register their coordinated attack before it's too late to avoid the boots to the back.
"We still want to play." The rest of the group of twin clones say sprinting inhumanly fast toward the plummeting Spider-Man. Shooting pain flies up his spine, as he is kicked away. 'AGAIN?! WHAT THE HELL SPIDER-SENSE!?' Twisting his body before the impact he lands on all fours, only to find himself surrounded on all sides by his giggling descendants.
His danger senses kick up a few notches as the group converges on him at once. Several even jumping into the air above him to cut of that escape route. 'Crap... I didn't want to do this. Sorry Bubbles.'
"Sorry girls, but Grandpa's gotta play rough now." Kicking his enhanced abilities to the next level he reaches up and grabs the quickest descending Dee Dee's leg, and spins her in a half circle, knocking another jumper away. He lets go of the shrieking girl, and she bowls over another four in the closing circle around him, creating an opening. "I'm so sorry, please don't tell Harls I did that!"
Peter blitzes through the hole in the crowd, and makes it about three yards before six of Dee Dee's are running along side of him. They are easily keeping pace with his stride, both amazing and distressing him.
"Spider-Man we're leaving!" Wonder Woman calls from above. Spider-Man looks up, along with all the Dee Dee's to see the Amazonian keeping pace but descending fast. He makes a leap of faith and jumps strait up. Spider-Sense! Bad idea.
"Back off Lady." A set of Dee Dees announce.
"He's with us." Three others finish. A finger's width from grabbing Diana's hand, four whips wrap around his legs, and yank him out of the sky. At the same time two Dee Dees blow past him to meet Wonder Woman with flying kicks. Diana managed to cross block the two separate kicks, but was sent higher into the air from the recoil.
Peter's aching chest slams into the pavement, and blinding light fills his vision. Suddenly energy surges through the whips and electrocutes him on top of his existing pain. Unable to hold back a scream, Spider-Man convulses from the nerve wrenching pain. Luckily he's has much much worse than this tazing, but he had the inkling they didn't have the setting on high at the moment.
"Spider-Man!" Diana shouts as she finally stops her forced ascent. The shocking stops and Peter manages to roll onto his back. His eyes open behind his mask, and he sees Wonder Woman, Batman, and Static hovering in the air well out of the teen hooligan's reach. Both the new Dark Knight and Static Shock are carrying a knocked out ally, John and Warhawk.
Hearing a large amount of footsteps approaching him, he takes a glance around him. All the teens with 'tudes are surrounding him, making sure that any rescue would be met with resistance. Considering the twenty plus of his own grandkids and their obviously enhanced abilities, it was a losing battle.
"I got this guys. Don't worry." Spidey calls out, a prominent strain to his tone. Lifting his right arm off the ground he gives his team a shaky thumbs up. 'Arnold would be so proud.'
"You heard the bug. Scram you dregs." The big brute teen says triumphantly, resting his mallet hand on his shoulder. Suddenly all around him came a collective groan from the Dee Dees.
"Arachnid." / "Arachnid." All the Delia and Deidre's, along with their downed grandfather say at once. 'This has got to be a wake-up call. I say that way too much if even my grandkids correct it.'
"We won't leave you." Diana 'Bless her heart.' defiantly announces, but Batman puts his free hand on her shoulder, and shakes his head.
"It's okay, I'm just getting warmed up. Trust me I'm good." Spidey shouts up to his friends and future comrades. The conscious members of the team are either hesitant or resigned. Batman opens up a portal with a loud boom and they enter it, Diana being the last one through. After they are gone, the teens surrounding Peter all look down at him. It's kinda unnerving.
"Let's squash this spider and get back to the boss." Scarecrow the Kid announces, revving up his buzz saw. He and the other two human guys smile dangerously, while the hyena dude laughs that creepy hyena laugh they do.
"We believe we already said that he's ours, Micheal." The Delia's say together, an edge to their voices that oozed authority.
"Hey... your supposed to call me Ghoul." Mike the scarecrow wannabe pouts, but he submissively backs down.
"Leave him to us, and report back to Lord Chronos." The Deidre's say, and ever so subtly block off the heavily outnumbered young men from Spidey.
"But..." The clown starts weakly.
"This is a family matter." All the Dee Dee's say and turn their attention back to their hostage, nothing but sweet sadistic smiles on their faces. 'I'll never look at a Raggity Anne doll the same way again.'
"Gulp." Peter verbalizes as he goes through motion, just before a dozen more whips fall over his chest. It takes a few agonizing seconds of sheer nerve frying pain, but the sweet release of unconsciousness takes him into it's gentle embrace.
"Owwwww..." Peter groans as his eyes flutter open groggily. Most of his body is comfortably numb, but there area few rebellious areas that remind him that he was beaten up and electrified. Shaking his head, he looks around the dimly lit room with a half lidded gaze.
"Not dead... that's a start. And hey, for once I don't have a headache..." The lights in the room explode in illumination, and his pupils shrink violently. "GAH! WHY?!" He tries to block the offending light with his arms, but finds them securely held in place out to his sides and above his shoulders.
"There's the headache." He moans, letting the flash effect dissipate behind the safety of his eyelids.
"Whoops, sorry about that Gramps." Deidre says as she saunters into the room from the door. Her sister is right behind her. Even with blurry vision Peter notices a drastic change in their attire. He only guessed it was them from the voices, which was also a lot more light hearted than he expected.
"Didn't think you'd be awake just yet." Delia adds, as she and her twin come to a stop in front of the hanging Spider-Man. His vision finally clears and he can finally tell why they look so different then before.
The teen girls ditched their costumes, and were in relatively normal clothing. They are wearing form fitting white t-shirts under fashionable jackets that stopped at their midriff. Delia's jacket is blue, and is Deidre's red. Both wear athletic pants, Delia's red and Deidre's blue, and white knee high boots. The biggest offset though was their hair. Their hair is platinum blond, easily reaching down to the back of their knees, with bangs covering one side of each of their faces. Gone was the white and red face paint, revealing two beautiful young women.
"How did you hide that much hair?" Is the first intelligent and most pressing question Peter blurts out.
"C'mon Gramps, you know us girls've gotta have their secrets." Deidre says to his left, and Delia nods on his right.
"Right. Well then hopefully you won't keep me in too much suspense, and let me know why you have dear ol Grandpa hanging here. I would suspect this isn't exactly what your Lord Chronos wants." Peter asks thinking back to what the girls said before zapping the crap out of him.
"As perceptive as he is cute." Delia smiles, and steps over to a console near one of the tethers holding his right foot in place. When he follows her movement Peter sees a metal cable attached to a box, connected to the console, which in turn is connecting the metal orb holding his foot inside it. Looking up he sees a similar orb containing his right hand and attached to a cable to the ceiling.
"I'm not sure how I feel about being called cute by my granddaughters, but thanks for the compliment." Parker asks shifting back to his descendant at the console.
"Welcome." They both say together. He notices Deidre head off to a table, and grab a small cylinder off it. Next to the cylinder on the table is his mask, just lying there. 'Traitor!'
"So why the secrecy from this Chronos guy? He kinda seems like the man in charge of your little troupe." He inquired further. Slightly testing the cables against his strength. They were strong, but if he put effort into it he could break them.
"Before that." Delia pushes a button and pulls a lever on the console. A low humming sound fills the room just before cables snap off the orbs and the floor and roof connectors. Peter drops an inch in the air before quickly snapping back into place, his arms and legs pulled even tighter apart.
"Gotta make sure you aren't going to strong arm your way out of this." Deidre finishes for her sister, and then walks back to Peter with the cylinder in hand.
"You magnetized the constraints so there is nothing to pull against. Clever girls." The eldest Parker states after a few seconds to ponder how he was floating in place.
"Thank you, we made it just for you." They say in unison, proud smiles on their faces.
"You made this? By yourselves?" Peter blinked in surprise at them.
"We're more than just pretty faces and kick ass bods." Delia admits, and she looks to her sister. They nod to each other, and Deidre holds the cylinder out to her side.
"This technology is based on your magnetizing ability, which is what allows you to stick to surfaces. Essentially this machine locks you in place. We tried to do that earlier by hand, but we're just not as strong as you are in our abilities." Deidre smiles up at her grandfather with a... sympathetic smile. 'Okay that's weird.' Of course Peter's scientific curiosity wins out over fear.
"You mean my ability to stick to walls is based in magnetism. I never really thought about it that way..." He mutters aloud, and both the girls nod in acknowledgment. "... Always thought it was more from the spider side. Wait... you said you tried to use it on me yourselves? How?"
"We have the same ability. However ours are rather watered down by comparison." Deidre boasted with a grin.
"We have a fraction of your strength, comparable speed and agility, and a lower degree of adhesive powers." Delia finished with the same expression as her sister.
"But we don't have yours or Mom's Spider-Sense. In lieu of that we have something akin to a Spider-Sense dampener. We don't register until in close proximity. Mom didn't really like that add on." Deidre says, and both girls look like they are reminiscing on something fondly.
"That would explain a few things. But what about the multiplying thing?" Peter was honestly surprised by the change he saw his descendants go through from earlier.
"Chronos did that to us, along with further enhanced strength and durability. He didn't know about our existing powers though." Deidre answered, coming out of her reminiscing. Suddenly her expression darkened a bit, and she looked down at the whip in her hand. Delia followed her sibling's gaze and her grin fell too. Peter felt the pit of his stomach drop. He actually forgot he was captured by the sisters for a moment.
"What happened to you two? Why did you do all this? What did Chronos do to get you?" Spidey asked in a soft concerned tone. He watched the two look back up to him, their gray eyes holding in them a hint of sadness.
"Chronos was just a means to an end. We've..." Deidre started, but bit her lip slightly after she paused.
"We've done terrible things to get to this day. And... and..." Delia continued, but she too ended up biting her lip. They looked to each other, their eyes becoming steely gray, and nodded to one another.
"And we're not going to stop till she pays." They say together, and Deidre draws back the metal tube, summoning the whip from the device.
"Whoa, wait! She? She who?! Now's not the time to play the pronoun game girls!" His sixth sense beats loudly in his skull, along with the not so subtle reveal. 'I'm not the one they are after?! Then why am I getting the lashes?!'
Without another word from either girl the whip is cracked at him. The beam rope wraps around his torso, left shoulder to the right side of his waist. Even with his TGUM suit the scorching heat was easily felt through it. Then came the electrical surge, dampened but none the less effective. Peter clenches his jaw, gritting his teeth together in an attempt to not scream out.
The girls below him look to one another for confirmation, then nod again. Deidre's thumb moves over the whip's cylinder, and the intensity increases ten fold. He loses his battle against screaming, and his voice echoes out into the large room he's in. The Dee Dee's wince at this, but keep up the torture.
The next thing Spider-Man know the light around him goes crimson. The pain vanishes all at once, and the energy whip vaporizes. His head rolls down into a hang. He hears his granddaughters shout something, and forces himself to look up. Floating in front of him is the back of a woman clad in red, with long auburn hair dancing in the crimson power surrounding her.
"Finally! Time to pay for what you did to our family Witch!" Peter's attention is drawn back to his descendants, who both have jumped into action. They back flip in unison from their position to the wall behind them and stick, both pulling a energy whip from behind their backs. They ignite the weapons, and leap off the wall launching the energy ropes at the woman. The mystery woman brings her red flaming hands up, and the whips deflect harmlessly off a brief red force field.
The Dee Dee's front flip mid air, and mirror each other as they aim drop kicks at the silent silent woman. With a quick swipe of the mystery woman's hand the girls are stopped a foot from her outstretched hand, and drop to the floor. Upon hitting the floor the twins create copies of themselves, and all four jump to their feet. They all ignite whips, ready for round two.
However the lady in red has other ideas. Before Peter can even utter a protest she spins around and presses a fiery hand to his chest. He hears angered, hate filled shouts come from his granddaughters, and then a simple pop. The next thing he notices he and the red woman are on a roof of a skyscraper overlooking the future city he was transported to.
A brisk breeze blows into him, and just about knocks him off his weary feet. Spidey manages to steady himself, but being light headed from the shock therapy really threw off his equilibrium. Shaking his head he places a hand on his cranium and looks up to his savior. "Wanda is that..."
Peter is interrupted by the red woman pressing herself against him, and wrapping him up in a hug. A hug that felt like she was holding onto him for dear life. Parker's hands reflexively fly up into the air, and he looks down at the top of the woman's head. He noticed some gray streaks breaking her auburn locks.
"Umm shouldn't the roles be kinda reversed here? I mean you just saved me." He jokes with a nervous chuckle. The woman stops trying to bury her head into his still very sore chest, and starts to laugh. Her laugh is littered with sobs. Pulling back from him, while still keeping her arms around him, her teary blood red eyes look up into his.
Wanda aged very gracefully, if Static was any indication of how far in the future this was. She didn't look much older than late forties, early fifties, by his guess, when she should probably be in her seventies by now. She had some age creases, mostly around her eyes, but they didn't detract from her overall beauty, only giving her a more matronly appearance.
Her long hair had only gotten longer, with two thin side braids wrapping around and connecting in the back. Instead of her head crest, she now wears a simple circlet of silver, with an... oddly familiar ruby gem in it's center. Her cape was gone, and her outfit was now a long red one piece dress, with matching arm sleeves. It was a much simpler style than her former costume, but worked well for this older Wanda.
"You have little idea how much I have missed your jokes Peter." Wanda says with a smile that seemed like it hadn't been used in a long time.
"Oh... um it's good to see you too Wanda." Unable to think of a good response, he just smiles back at her. "I... uh like to new look."
"Thank you." Without warning she hugs herself to him again, and rests her head against his shoulder. 'Oh okay then... well this is... odd for her. Not uncomfortable odd, but... seriously what is going on right now?'
"Welcome." Peter smiles, and hesitantly hugs the older woman back. "Um... it's uh good to see you alive in the future and all, but..."
The older Scarlet Witch's fingers grip the suit covering his back, wincing at the hanging unspoken need for answers. Spidey pauses at the feeling, wanting to see what Wanda was going to do. After a few seconds of just the sounds of city life around them, he hears Wanda sigh. She lets the hug go, and steps back and out of his arms. Looking up into his brown eyes, he sees the conflict and hesitance in hers.
"You have questions." She says simply breaking her gaze with him to stare down at the roof.
"Yeah. And from your reaction, I'm guessing I'm not gonna like the answers to some of them." He accurately assumes, as Wanda nods her head and places her right hand on her left upper arm.
"No. You wont." She bites her bottom lip for a second, and the closes her eyes. "And by the end, you may abhor me as well." Her voice is soft, but her words don't waiver. As if she is fully convinced of them.
Peter reels back a bit, surprised by Wanda's admittance of this. "Wanda we're friends... why would I ever hate yo..."
"Friends. Always that and never more." Maximoff's tone hardens in an instant, and her crimson energy builds around her. He notices her fingers are digging into her left arm. "I've come to revile that word. But now... now I would cherish being called such." Her grip on her arm loosens, and her power fades. She returns to the pitying tone she had a moment ago, and her expression one of anguish.
"Wanda... what happened?" Peter asks softly, not sure where else to start with this conversation.
"I..." She sighs heavily and looks up to him, her well hidden age suddenly showing. "I was the one who killed your family." She pauses to gauge Peter's reaction.
The man in question isn't sure what to think about her statement. While caught off guard, the way the Dee Dees behaved now made much more sense. The missing puzzle piece fit into place, Wanda was their target, not him. He was just a means to an end, they didn't want to actually harm him. Yet this was still only completing the border of the puzzle. The real question now is why would Wanda, a kind, caring, extremely powerful woman and friend, let his future family die. Peter is not unfamiliar with actions and their consequences, so there had to be more here.
He hated to admit it, but the impact of this statement wasn't as jarring as she may have expected. Yes, this was pertaining to his apparent grim future, but it was still the future, and things could be changed. This he knew intimately. Bracing himself for a dismal story, he swallows the lump in his throat before rubbing the back of his neck, and nods to her. "I'll reserve judgment until I hear the story, okay?"
"Thank you." Wanda's shoulders slump slightly, taking a small amount of comfort from his words. "Something you must know is I never wanted to cause you or your family harm. I beg you understand this. Yet my sin still happened twelve years ago. You, Harleen, your daughter and son, and their children, were visiting Pamela in the Amazon."
"I'm sure you remember the land you acquired for her for Christmas all those years ago. She turned it into a literal Hanging Garden of Eden, a haven of flourishing natural beauty and unprecedented bounty to the world. Her creations had change the earth for the better. Unfortunately as is human nature people came to fear her power. Eden had been attacked both politically and violently over the years, but none could permanently harm it. Until..." Wanda hesitates, her eyes reflecting sorrow in them.
"Until someone succeeded, right?" Peter finishes for her, clenching his own fists in quite seething anger. Something created by Pamela, for the benefit of human kind no less, taken simply because of fear. He didn't want to believe it was true, but he'd seen so much in his lifetime alone to prove him otherwise.
"Yes. Eden was turned to ash in a firestorm created by man's hand. We found out much to late that it was a man called Bane, and an army he raised in secret. The single largest and most devastating fire of this century was brought upon by a bid for greed and power. Your family was caught in the middle of the attack. And Pamela... even with all her power and influence with the Green had remained human, mortal. She fought back against the hellfire, and your family did as much as they could for her, Eden, and the people living there." Wanda continues, keeping her voice level, even if pain and anger peppers her speech. She stops for a moment and shudders.
"What about the League? Where were they?" Peter asks.
"Bane had his allies created a diversion for the League. I left them once we were informed of the assault on Eden. Hundreds of people, those who sympathized and desired to assist Pamela in her endeavors, died that night. You and your family strived to save as many as you could. I found you protecting Harleen, your daughter's husband, and your grandchildren from Bane's forces. You asked me to teleport them and as many people from Eden as possible. Then you ran into the flames."
"A creation of magic on that scale takes me time in this world, and most of my concentration. Whilst I was weaving the spell, your son-in-law was shot and killed, and Harleen's leg was severely damaged while they protected me." Wanda took a steadying breath, and continued. "I was able to complete the transportation spell. Yet only a third of the people living in Eden escaped that night alive. You, Pamela, and your daughter all perished that night. If... if I had been faster, weaved quicker, had more power..." Tears fill her eyes and her hands cover her face as she drops to her knees crying.
Spidey kneels down just as fast and pulls her against him in a comforting hug. "You saved Harley and my grandchildren, and all those people. You saved all those lives..."
"But I couldn't save you! I couldn't save the man I loved!" Wanda shouts, shaking her head against his chest, and gripping his suit in her hands.
Peter freezes at Wanda's admission. 'She loved me? She...' "You... loved me?" He blurts out before thinking better of it. Her own eyes go wide, just realizing what she said to him.
"I... I..." She pulls back from him a bit, her gaze searching him over. She gives up when seeing his look of uncertainty. "Yes. I did love you. I still do. It's the reason that your granddaughters used you. They knew of my feelings, and you were the perfect bait to draw me out."
"How? Why? When?" Peter rambles off, as his minds is wrestling with the prospect of Wanda Maximoff, THE Scarlet Witch, loving him.
"I've... I've revealed too much already." She quickly masks her emotions, and lets go of his suit, sighing heavily. She wipes her eyes of her tears, before looking back at him. "I truly am sorry Peter."
"It's uh, okay. Just a lot to suddenly drop on a guy. Especially a guy with Parker Luck." He runs a hand through his brown hair, attempting to sort his feelings and mind out.
"Yes." Wanda squirrels a quick look at him, seeming ready to say something more, but she catches herself and pushes off her knees. Peter follows suit and stands up with her. The Scarlet Witch slides back into business mode, and starts crafting a spell. Red energy flows around her hands, and pours from her eyes. "Let us reunite you with your comrades. You need to return to your own time."
"Right." Spidey swallows the lump in his throat, and nods to her.
"Please place your hand on my shoulder." Wanda says calmly, though her voice has a slight echo to it.
"Right." Is all Parker can say before doing as she ask.
BAMF!

Moments later the two heroes pop into existence in a grand hallway. The architecture screams lavish, rich, and Egyptian in design. Marble pillars line both sides of the hall, and portraits of a brown haired woman in various gowns and dresses lay between them. Several of the paintings had Clinton in them, in a much more well designed time suit, standing with the seemingly happy woman.
"That's a painted on smile if I've ever seen one." The Wall Crawler says aloud, smirking at the joke's double meaning.
If Spidey had to guess this was some sort of lady friend of "Lord Chronos's". He and Wanda look around, and notice the place is littered with unconscious guards. Guards who look like resurrected Egyptian zombies, complete with loincloth and gold spears.
"Well you don't see that everyday. Where are we?" Spider-Man asks looking down the long hallway.
"I transported us to the nearest location of your friends' chronological signature. They should be..."
"Well this makes things easier." A familiar voice comes from behind them, and the two spin around to find the majority of the group they were looking for. Or at least the majority of the future group, and Hal?
"Some friends you are, you had to let a lady do all the saving for you." Spidey jabs at Static as he approaches. Static, Warhawk, and the future Batman stop in their tracks when they see Wanda standing behind him. Peter cocks his head a bit in confusion, then looks to Wanda, who is doing her best to avoid the gazes of the others.
"Is that the Scarlet Witch you've mentioned?" The Hal asks walking past the future League, and stopping before her. "Looks like we didn't need to do all that legwork after all. A pleasure to finally meet you, I'm Hal Jordon a Green Lantern." The Lantern smiles warmly to her, much to the contrast of the others holding their ground some feet away, and offers his hand to her.
"We..We've met, but why are you here?" Wanda asks surprised to see him, but shakes his hand anyway.
"Oh... yeah right, you've probably met me in the future. I suppose your wondering where John went. You see since our arrival here," Hal gestures to Peter and himself. "Time Shifts have started becoming dangerously erratic, and apparently I have taken his place. So we were looking for you while figuring out where Chronos is. Thanks for saving us some time Wanda. Now we can get on the whole time space continuum collapsing thing that much sooner."
"Oooooookay." Spider-Man says as he scratches his head, then looks back to the future Leaguers. "So where's Diana, and what's up with you three?"
"Why is she here?" Warhawk demands with a threatening growl, pointing a taloned finger at Wanda.
"She rescued me, why wouldn't she be here?" Spidey asks even more confused. "Is there something I'm missing?"
"Yeah, she's one of the bad guys." Warhawk snipes converting the pointing hand into an upside down fist for effect. Peter's head pulls back, and his right brow rises.
"What? Yeah right, Wanda is one of the kindest women I've eve..." A hand rests on his shoulder from behind, cutting him off. Turning around to look at the owner, he sees a saddened woman shaking her head.
"They are not wrong. I am no hero anymore..." Wanda starts, a defiant gaze falling upon the future heroes. "... But I am no more a villain that a hero."
"Whaaaaaaaa..." Spider-Man goes slack-jawed at the confession.
"In our time she's known as the Blood Witch. She abandoned the League about twelve years ago, and has been gathering power since." Batman explains, his white eyes narrowing in response to her gaze.
"No, what? Wanda?" Peter asks Wanda in a low shaky voice, after looking back and forth between her and the group. John... err Hal looked just as bewildered as he was at the accusation.
The Blood Witch sighs, her stare relaxing in defeat when Peter's eyes meet hers. "Tis true. I have become a Lord of Chaos, and I have killed using the power gained by the title. But I have saved countless others, even if my means are less than benevolent."
"BULLSHIT!" Warhawk yells, ready to pounce. He stopped by Static throwing up an arm to block him.
"After your death, my life fell apart. I blamed my lack of power that I couldn't save you. I left and sought more as to continue your legacy of "With great power comes with great responsibility", as it was the only thing left of you to keep. Klarion the Witch Child appeared to me, boasting about my loss and inability to save you. In a fit of rage and sadness I took his life. His Masters imbued me with his title and power. I became a Lord of Chaos, destined to create the chaos I wielded so easily. However I never forgot your words, and I create the destruction but keep the death toll minimal."
"You've still killed hundreds. That doesn't justify your actions." Batman replies.
"Okay everyone just stop!" Spider-Man orders with a raised voice. Everyone does stop and stares at the usual light hearted hero. Wanda even takes a step back from him, fearing the worst. "Look I'm not the most knowledgeable about all this timey whimey stuff, but anything four dimensional collapsing is usually a very bad thing, right? So not to break up this finger pointing party, but I'd rather fix things, including this future without, sooner than later." He pauses for a second. "And where is Diana?"
"She was displaced from time by a shift." Hal explains grimly. "If we fix things she should return."
"Seriously? And we're here arguing?" Spidey groans.
"He's got a point. Not that I don't like a good debate on the ethics of right and wrong, how about we fix time first? What do ya'll say?" Lantern sides with Spider-Man, and stands in front of the Crimson Witch with him.
"We can't trust her!" Warhawk shouts, looking at Peter and Hal as if they were madmen.
"You don't have to." Spider-Man points at the younger man. "I do." He admits adamantly and points back at himself, an unwavering gaze sent his way.
A few tense moments pass before Batman raises a finger to his ear and nods. "They're right. Fixing the fabric of reality comes first. We have Chronos's location, so lets end this." Peter sighs in relief and looks back at Wanda, giving her a reassuring grin. She returns it with renewed hope in her expression.
"So can we go now?" The brown haired woman from the all portraits asks, poking her head out from behind the future heroes. Spidey double takes, and blinks at her sudden appearance.
"Yeah we're leaving." Batman tells her and then turns and pulls a small metal box from his utility belt. A button press later, and a Boom Tube opens up behind her. "Everyone in." Batman and Warhawk take the lead, followed by the portrait woman. Static pauses to smile and nod at Spidey, Lantern, and Crimson Witch, before entering. Hal follows suit flying into the portal.
Peter starts forward, then stops after looking at the portal for a second. "Something's been nagging me since the start of all this. Why didn't you go through the portal with the rest of us?" He turns and asks Wanda. He apparently broke her from her thoughts, as she blinked at him a few times.
"I don't know what you mean? What portal?" Her confusion isn't faked, but it certainly confuses him.
"The one at the start of this whole time hopping adventure. You know Clinton broke into the Watchtower. You froze at the portal and didn't come with us."
"That never happened. I am sure I would have followed you through were that the case." Wanda says, quirking a brow at him.
"But... then that means..." Peter rubs his chin for a second, before smiling happily.
"What?"
"I'm no Reed or Strange when it comes to the science of Time, but I'm thinking the future just got brighter. C'mon." He grabs her hand, and they head toward the Boom Tube.
"Wait, Peter wait." He stops just before entering, and spins around to her. Wanda's free hand glows in crimson energy, and a half second later his mask appears there. "I think you'll need this." A coquettish smile on her slightly flushed face.
"Your awesome Wanda." Peter pulls his mask on over his head, and the two enter the portal.
As the Boom Tube closes behind them the group of heroes stare down a small old west jail. To two of them it's very familiar, to the rest it's just odd. Spidey's right lens rises as he notices the irony in Chronos's hideout. Hal scans the door to the shot up jail with his ring.
"No booby traps." Hal says before his body distorts, and John Steward takes his place back. "At least none that me ring can detect." Spider-Man and Static Shock look at the returned Lantern.
"Make up your mind, would you." Virgil and Peter say in unison. They turn to one another and smirk at each other.
"Anyway it's safe to go in." John finishes ignoring the two of them.
"If we don't beat this guy, its the end of everything." Warhawk say in a grim tone, staring at the building inside the coliseum.
"We've been there before." Batman answers stepping up next to the Thanagarian.
"Not like this." The silver armored birdman admits, hanging his head. "What are you supposed to do when you have the weight of the world on your shoulders?"
John places a reassuring hand on his son's shoulder. "Plant your feet."
Warhawk smiles and the team heads into the jail. Once inside a quick scan shows that there are no defenses whatsoever, and they end up crowding down the hallway near the final jail cell. There on the bed wrapped in a blanket is Chronos, sleeping like a baby.
"I don't understand. Of all the places he could be, why sleep here?" John asks as the observe the defenseless overlord of time.
"Because a loser with a kingdom is still just a loser." Enid, Clinton's wife, pushes forward into the cell and grabs the blanket on her husband. She tears it off of him, and throws it to the floor. "See for yourself."
'If the situation wasn't so dire and all I'd probably be busting a gut right now.' Clinton, in full suit, is curled up and sucking on his thumb on the cot. Spidey brings his fist up to his mouth to try and hide his snicker. But then David wakes up.
"Enid?" He asks confused, but quickly notices the collected heroes behind her.
"Nice on the stealth thing lady." Batman says dripping with sarcasm.
Spider-Sense!
Chronos pushes the button on his belt, and a portal opens up down the hallway. The Jokerz Gang pour out of it, including Peter's Granddaughters, back in their doll costumes. As that's happening Clinton opens another portal and jumps through it before anyone could stop him.
"We need the belt!" Spider-Man shouts, and jumps toward the portal. It closes just as he's about to reach it, and he slams his fist onto the bed. 'Shit! He could be anywhere in time now!'
Strongman Bonk charges forward uppercutting his mallet hand into Warhawk. The armored hero is sent through the roof, to the smiling Jokerz satisfaction. A smile quickly wiped away as Warhwak breaks right back in through the roof and flying tackles him out the front of the shaking building. This finishes off whats left of the jail's sturdiness, and it starts to collapse.
Batman picks up Enid and they fly through the hole in the roof. Spider-Man steps up next to the Crimson Witch, as she is staring down the approaching Dee Dee's. Even with the building literally crumbling around them, they are solely focused on her. Static and Lantern combine their powers to create a dome around everyone, as the roof caves in on them.
"A real gentleman isn't he, Dee Dee?" Delia says to her sister, after the building finally rests in piece around them.
"They're perfectly extinct, Dee Dee." Deirdre smirks, and Delia quickly whips Green Lantern, sending him a good distance away, taking away an obstacle to their target. The Hyena guy takes advantage of the confusion and attacks Static, taking him away from Spidey and Witch too. The girls focus back on Wanda, and advance on her.
"Girls I know you think Wanda *SPIDER-SENSE!*..." Suddenly Spider-Man and Crimson Witch are forced apart, as he narrowly dodges a fast whip crack to his face. Peter leaps and back flips onto a beam sticking up out of the rubble in a crouch. Wanda has a red barrier in front of her outstretched arms, blocking an assault of whip strikes against it from both girls. 'Okay, beyond the reasoning point I see.'
Before he's able to jump back into the fight, white tears form on the ground near Static and the Hyena man. Virgil is quickly sucked into a tear, vanishing from sight. "Static!"
"Spider-Man!" Wanda calls up to him in a strained voice. Spider-SenWHAM! Spidey is sucker kicked in the gut by one of his descendants, as another one drop double drop kicks him down from above. The Web Slinger hits the ground in a break fall roll, and turns looks up from all fours to see a half dozen Dee Dee's literally punching each other.
The dozen quickly multiply, creating a fighting force of powered teenage angst. Another half dozen were keeping the pressure on Wanda, who had a dome barrier around her, kneeling from the stress. "This is getting out of hand. You girls need to stop!" Spider-Man shouts over the chaos.
"And who's gonna stop us, you?" The twenty plus Dee Dee's, minus the Wanda attackers, all say together.
"Yeah. You're all grounded." His lenses sharpen and he takes a deep breath. 'I'm really not gonna feel proud of myself for this, but all of time is at stake.'
Spider-Man becomes a blur, as he pushes his speed and senses to their peak. The Dee Dees did not expect it, and could barely follow him. Spidey ran right in the middle of the first two, and clothes lined them. He slips under the kick of the third, and palm strikes her chin from below. The fourth and fifth are taken out with a quick punch to each.
SPIDER-SENSE!
As he's dodging, weaving, and generally being amazing a tear in time rips open in the middle of the riot. A Tyrannosaurus Rex comes roaring right out of the hole, mouth wide open and jaws ready to snap shut. Spidey, not losing his momentum, hops off the ground and high kicks the dinosaur in the jaw. The Rex crashes to the ground tko'ed, and slides into a bunch of Dee Dees.
Peter jumps behind it and grabs the tail of the ancient predator in his arms. "No hard feelings buddy, but you're just in the right place at the wrong time." He hears some of his granddaughters groan at the pun. He pivots his torso and turns the eight ton beast into a giant cudgel. The dinosaur takes out a huge chunk of the Dee Dee forces by simply ramming into them.
Spider-Man get a half rotation in, before letting the Rex go and sending it to another part of the coliseum. Peter lets out a breath of exertion, then takes off into a sprint through the opening he created.
Two web lines stick to the back of two Dee Dee's attacking Wanda's barrier, and right after the two of them are hurtling through the air as Spidey runs underneath them. Firing two impact balls at two more, he hits them in the head, knocking them out. The last two girls catch onto him and break off from attacking Wanda to stop him.
Mirrored whips fly at him, and Spidey jumps into the air. He plasters webs over the girls' eyes. Landing in between the struggling girls, he grabs their heads and smacks them together. The rebellious teens wobble to the ground, and slump against each other unconscious.
He stands up to face the Crimson Witch, when suddenly the sky lights up. A titanic time vortex opens up in the sky, and he looks up to see it. The gigantic tear quickly widens, taking over the night sky.
"Ohhhh that's not good." Peter says to himself.
"Peter, look!" A weakened Wanda points behind him. Spider-Man follows the direction and sees Chronos arguing with his wife. 'Seriously?! He came back?! Whatever, now we've got a shot.'
"I got to get over there and stop this. Thanks Wanda." Spidey turns and stretches out his hand to sling to the couple. Before he can a woman's body presses into his back, and crimson clad arms hug his front. "Wanda?"
"What fate has in store for me for doing this I care not. My past self cares for you Peter, please don't abandon her." Wanda says with a shaking voice. "She needs you."
"I... I won't abandon her Wanda. I promise." Peter says back to her, and he feels Wanda's resting head on his back nod. She lets him go, and steps back.
"Thank you, my hero." She smiles happily at him, then clads herself in a red aura, and floats off into the raging battle. Spider-Man watches her for only a second, before hanging his head, clenching his fists, and cursing under his breath. He spins and webslings toward Chronos.
Landing a few feet away, he straitens up and takes a step forward. "Oi Clinton, look around you! Look at the sky man!"
Chronos and his wife turn to the red and blue clad hero, then look up to the sky. Clinton smiles goofily and whistles, while his wife's eyes widen and terror flashes across her face. "Oooo pretty." David says admiringly.
"Stay with us man, we've got a problem here." John chastises as he lands next to Peter.
"Right. You're right." Chronos agrees with a nod, seemingly finally realizing the error of his actions. "This calls for another approach." He leans over and kisses his wife on the cheek, then presses the button on his belt. "You'll love me next time!" He shouts over the sound of a time portal opening behind him. He bolts through the portal, leaving Spider-Man and Green Lantern gaping at his lunacy.
"Seriously Clint!?" Spider-Man cries in disbelief as he and Lantern rush to the portal. They hop through just as it closes.
!SPIDER-SENSE!
The Wall Crawler's Spider-Sense starts kicking his brain with both feet. "AHHHHHHH!" Spidey screams in agony, grabbing his head with both hands. The skull splitting pain almost turns him into a blubbering mess, until Lantern creates a energy bubble around the two of them. This dulls Spider-Man's pain, but the further they travel into the tunnel the more his danger sense ramps up.
"This isn't good." John says aloud, bringing Peter out of his migraine long enough to look where they are headed.
"Why... guh? Where else could he go?" At the end of the long time vortex tunnel an silhouette could be seen.
"The beginning of time." Lantern answers anxiety building in his voice.
"I take it that's a bad thing." Peter gets to a wobbly stance, one hand still holding his throbbing head.
"Only if he gets there first." John grits his teeth and pushes the bubble forward faster. Spidey bears with the increasing pain in his head as they close in on Chronos. The silhouette becomes clearer, a hand literally holding a universe in the palm of its hand. 'Man if that's not iconography I don't know what is.'
"The Lanterns have a legend. No one can see the beginning of time. It's a universal law."
"If you can geeeehht me to his belt I might be a...ble to reprogram it. But hurry... I'm barely holding my head to AHGH! Together." Spider-Man repeatedly winces, but keeps forcing past his building torment.
"On it!" Green Lantern launches a set of tethered shackles from the bubble toward Chronos, who is reaching for the beginning of time. His wrists are locked in the shackles, and he's quickly pulled back into the energy bubble.
Spider-Man grabs the belt and pulls open the activation button. His fingers freeze and twitch involuntarily as he's working. 'Good thing I looked at this earlier.'
"Hurry up, we're almost out of time!" Stewart shouts, trying to pull their transportation back away from the gravity of the beginning of time.
"GOOD ONE!" Parker shouts back, absolutely no mirth behind the words. 'One more wire and turn this up...' "GOT IT!"
"TOO LATE!" John, Peter, and David are all enveloped in a bright blinding light as they enter the hand.

"I wouldn't want to impose." A woman's voice cut through the light. And just like that he's face to face with Wanda, past... err present Wanda, the Scarlet Witch. For a few seconds he just stares at her. She grows concerned with each silent passing second, before finally waving her hand in front of his face.
"Peter? Are you okay? You suddenly had a distant look in your eyes." She asks worriedly. Peter finally blinks, and his eyes thank him for it. His vision focuses on the woman in front of him, and he smiles.
"Yeah, sorry, I think some of the beating Morlun gave rattled the ol' noggin. What didn't you want to impose upon again?" Spidey quickly makes up a lie, as he recognizes where they are and what time. 'I guess I... did it? I need to find John!'
"Vacation time... Are you positive you are okay? Maybe you should be checked when we get to the infirmary." Wanda says looking him over a bit worriedly.
"Right vacation time... yeah, like I said don't count yourself out of it. I would be glad to have you there." Peter gives her a toothy smile, but Wanda still looks unsure. Future Wanda's words come back to him, and Parker can't help the tinge that comes to his cheeks. "Heh heh." Embarrassment leads to him nervously scratching that back of his head.
"You are turning red Peter, are you feeling feverish?" Wanda quickly puts her right palm across his forehead to check his temperature. This only serves to make the hero's cheeks glow brighter.
"No... uh maybe. It might be best to get to the infirmary and get myself checked after all. Besides I'm sure the girls would have some ideas on vacation spots we can go." Parker sputters out, doing his damnedest to mask his blush under the guise of sickness, but also just get off the subject all together.

As soon as they get to the infirmary doors, Peter sees John and Diana come around the corner. Brown eyes meet green, and they two men instinctively knew they needed to talk.
"Hey I'll be in in a minute Wanda. I just remembered I have something I need to talk to John about." He excuses himself from a slightly perplexed Wanda, who just nods and then enters the doors after a second. Peter meets up with his other two time jumpers quickly.
"Hey Diana, John. How's things?" He asks casually, not entirely sure how to start this conversation.
"Very well. We are here to check on Batman's condition. I assume you are here for the same?" Diana greets with a pleasant smile. Which is very contrasting to Stewart's hard lines expression.
"Mainly to check on Harls, but yeah the same. Say..."
"Diana, you go on ahead, I need to ask Pete something. We'll be in in a moment." John pulls the same tactic as Peter. Diana nods to them, and heads into the infirmary too. The two men check their sixes for prying ears. "So did that whole trip really happen?"
"I vividly remember several unpleasant horseback rides, and rather angry teenagers, yeah." Spidey replies in a low conspiratorial voice.
"Then I guess you got us home all right, way to go kid." Lantern smiles, and pats Peter on the shoulder.
"I'm gonna guess Diana doesn't remember, since it's just us being all sneaky sneak about this." Peter's suspicion is confirmed when the Green Lantern nods. Spider-Man lets out a sigh of relief, but then gets an evil grin.
"So you and Hawkgirl, eh?" Stewart looks nervous for a second, but recollects himself quick.
"So you and Quinn, huh?" John snipes back, a vengeful grin splitting his face.
Spider-Man gulps audibly, realizing a very complicated love life coming in the near future with a certain trio of women.
'Oh... right...'

"We're here, now what?" Tenebrea says gruffly into the cell phone as he and Ivy stand before a huge long since abandoned and fire bathed church. The silent night and steady snowfall, only adding to the eerie abbey's nightmarish appearance.
"Come in out of the cold my children. Please confess your sins and be absolved of them." Joker answers through the phone.
Before he can answer, Ivy walks up to the entrance. Already anxious, pissed off, and freezing, she ignores the looming presence of the church, and summons a huge vine from under the frozen earth. The plant acts as a battering ram and busts it's way through the large charred doors with ease. Splintering wood, and rusted metal all over the inside of the building. She flashes Peter an angered and impatient scowl, before heading in on her own.
"Not much for the sanctity of holy ground is she?" Joker chuckles. "Better catch her before she's fell by holy wrath."
"Ivy wait!' Tenebrea shouts, sprinting forward. Poison Ivy pauses and looks back annoyed at him, just before she literally disappears into the ground with a scream of surprise. Peter reaches her spot in a short second, just in time to see the trap door swing shut, sealing off Ivy's scream. He goes to reach for the door when his Spider-Sense flares, and he stops an inch from the floor.
Joker's spine chilling laugh comes echoes out of the phone he's still holding. "Can't beat the classics. Hoohoohoo, the look on her face." Tenebrea growls and reaches for the trapdoor once again, and once again his sixth sense yells at him not to.
"You have pretty good intuition there T. The door is rigged to explode if it's forced open. Not to mention it'll set off all the gasoline I have down there with the angry little flower." Peter could feel Joker's smug smile from the other side of the phone.
"Where is she?" T growls into the cell.
"On her own path to salvation my son. Just like you must walk your own." The clown says, and no sooner than he said this a door creaks open and light pours out into the dark entrance hall. Peter swears under his breath, and stands up looking in the direction of the new path. "Good luck sinner." The call ends, and Tenebrea is left alone.

A/N: Hello again dear readers. Here's the conclusion of The Once and Future Spidey arc, and I hope you liked it. This one had a few revisions from the original script, but this story is ever evolving anyway. I hope it didn't disappoint.
Anywhos, what did you all think of the twist I threw in there? Good, Bad, what the hell was I thinking? I'd really like your input. Like I said in the last chapter, I wanted to write this particular arc since really early on in PP&H's development. And personally I'm happy with how it turned out.
In the next chapter we get back to the back story, and this one involves the clown prince of crime. We'll have to see just what he has in story for our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Hope you all enjoyed, and I'll see you in the next chapter. Adios readers, till next time.
~ Wiggles
Cashagon: Wouldn't it be the Spider's-Web... ehh ehh? Gonna let myself out now.
Protagonist Jones: I actually already answered the seed in his neck question back in chapter 8. It's kinda glossed over a bit, but essentially she was lying about hearing what she could say, unless he was actually near a plant that she could use through her telepathy. To answer the Inheritors/Web of Life thing... kinda. It was a series of events that led to them finding him in the DC verse. A sort of piggy back on a strong signal they received from a huge surge of magical energy... and I'll let you connect those dots. To be honest I agree that my slice of life stuff works better, but I do like action to break things up. As for the MCU... well they aren't really sitting on their asses, and I have an explanation for that, but no spoilers. Thanks for reading and the long ass review PJ.
EYKFAN: Well thank you EKY. I'm glad you like my work.
Croniklerx: What a coincidence... wait people actually read my profile? Huh. Glad you liked the changes I did, trust me if I did a carbon copy I would have tanned my own hide for it. Well I write the previews before I actually write the chapters they go to, and sometimes I need to change things. But overall I try to stay close to them. I was waiting for a chance to throw the Invincible twist in there for a while. Didn't think I'd get to it so soon though lol. Well I feel every hero does take time off, and they weren't always heroes, so ordinary life does happen from time to time. I will eventually explain SC's pause at the portal, no worries. Yes that was a Civil War reference.
MEleeSmasher: What a coinkydink indeed. And yes they do know about the Civil War, they lived it.
Bael92: WORDPLAY!
Draconeis: Hope you liked how I did the Dee Dees. As for John, this story is a mash-up of the DCAU, MCU, DCU, so I'm kinda working with a mashed together timeline. To answer your question though, this takes place in a JLU episode and no he didn't meet his future son, didn't even know he had one. The future chapter takes place about 30 to 40 years in the future if that helps. Thanks for reading.
Null: I know, and realize this. But no worries starting with Chapter 14 I'm back to filling out the past. And from there it should mostly be that.
Anonymous1684: I may, I may not. It really depends on how the story goes. Though I can say people are looking for them. However there is no magical communication device between these two dimensions.
justafan: Well I hope my little twist sufficed.
Blue Soki: History would have a hard time getting rid of me. My head hurts just thinking about that.
im ur misconception: Keeping on trucking.
Adam West: Gotta ask... is this the real Adam "Batman running with a time bomb" West?
Angel of Atonement: Oh it did... at least from Spidey's point of view. As for my original material it'll start back up in Chapter 14. Thanks for reading AoA!
