Promises of Truth
Summary – Definition: St. Brutus's Secure Center for Incurably Criminal Boys - first-rate institution for hopeless cases; a place for the mental. After Harry gets whisked after to a place for mental by his Uncle, his meets a very, very strange person. Book 5
A/N: There were some questions. I will be changing a few things from the cannon of Death note.
Raito is considerably younger. Though he is not in Harry's age, he is nineteen. I know, young, but still, I do not want to make him too much older. That is all I'm going to say for him for now. The others information and what happened to L and Raito and their past will be found out in later chapters. Raito will also be OOC –he is in an asylum.
Yes, the Magic is real. It's just that Harry's Uncle has had enough of Harry and had sent him to the ICB. He put him in the category of 'delusional'
Disclaimer: I do not own anything except for my OC's, Knight or other OC's. This is also a complicated fanfiction. I apologize for any incorrect grammar.
Chapter 2 – Roommate and information
He was lead out of the room, following the older teen. Harry had no idea where they were heading to but made track of the halls they went through. It had its perks, living in a place as big as Hogwarts made it easier to create a mental map, for Harry, at least. Raito stopped and Harry noticed that nobody was around. The teen turned to look at him properly, frown on face. Harry felt himself unconsciously straighten up, just like how the teen stood.
And then he smiled.
"No need to get all worked up –I know how intimidating I can be." Harry slouched back down with a smile on content. The teen laughed.
"Now, I know that we know each other's names but we have never been properly introduced. My name is Raito Yagami. It is a pleasure to meet you." Harry took Raito's outstretched hand and shook it firmly.
"I'm Harry Potter. Please to meet your acquaintance." They both smiled and let go. They walked on as Harry looked around curiously. Raito spoke.
"So, Harry, is okay if I call you that?" At Harry's nod, Raito continued. "Okay, Harry, here in this stupid ICB institution, we had numbers, stations, and sections. The lunch room, as you just saw, is on the first floor. The game room is also on the first floor well, let's just say that the first floor is where everyone can gather together; well, certain ones. Anyway, the second floor is where you and I will reside. You may have saw when you were dropped off by whomever that the ICB is like a school. The faculty members do provide us education and so forth but it is a little different. We come in groups, some in big numbers and some only consisting of two members. It is very simple." Raito continued to sprout information. Harry learned all kinds of things and couldn't help but compare it to Hogwarts. Unlike his magical school, the ICB wasn't as rumor spreading. The people tended to keep to themselves. Somehow, everyone here reminded Harry of the Slytherins.
"Now, here's what you need to know, Harry." Harry immediately set his attention on Raito. "You are not allowed to enter the floors above us, even in an emergency or if you were told by someone –doctor or not. None of that is allowed. You will be punished, and it will be terrible. There was this one rule breaker named Seth, such an idiot he was. He snuck into the third floor somehow, not that far dare I say but an amazing feat. Never came back same, the kid. Jumped off the building a week later – Wasn't pretty at all. I saw it all happen in front of my eyes. Painting beside my window and then I see this little black figure on the other side of the building. Shocked but made no sound; that was my reaction. I had seen plenty of people and loved ones die in front of my eyes. I had investigated gruesome deaths ever since I was a child and I have to say, Seth's death wasn't the worse. No, what made me disturbed about his suicide was his mind." Raito even pointed at the side of his head. Harry continued to listen in horror. Sure, he had seen Cedric die and had heard of suicides but he had never spoken to someone who had witnessed it, and many at that, and he could tell that Raito wasn't lying. "He was mentally damaged, not physically. He didn't cut himself or anything. He was messes up in the head after his punishment and he never returned the same; he didn't die as him. Do you get me?" Harry got it somewhat. Raito sighed and turned to the wizard fully. He grabbed Harry's shoulders and stared at him seriously in the eyes, caramel clashing with green.
"Listen to me, Harry. Humans…Humans are powerful beings; powerful animals. We are the first animals to venture into three bodies; air, water, and ground. We had built submarines, airplanes, cars. Simply walking is conquering something. We are at the top of the food chain. We have guns, war tanks, and cannons, all of that machinery! We have technology, a snap of the fingers and the lights are out. We humans are amazing! We can get rid on things in are way with a push of a button or flick of the finger and millions could die. We have money! Money is power they say!" Harry was truly getting scared but he stayed quiet, knowing that Raito wasn't done making his point. "But a human's greatest weapon, do you know what it is?" Harry stayed quiet as he shook his head. "The mind. A human's greatest weapon is the mind; the brain. A push of the button; do you really want to? Do you really want to kill millions of innocent people? That is what the brain asks. While it is the human's greatest weapon, it is also the human's greatest weakness. You say you are going to do one thing but your mind tells you to do another. It is with you," Raito pointed at Harry's head. "Yet it is against you." Raito lowered his hands to Harry's neck. It was silent for some moments until Raito stood straight again. He sighed. "That is what intrigued me about Seth's death. His mind. He had conquered all three bodies, he bragged. Yet, despite that, there was one thing he could not conquer; his body; his mind." Raito turned away, suddenly looking so much older than he was.
"I too was held captive. I believed that, because I conquered the three bodies, I could rule. I could conquer the world. I was such an idiot and I paid big time. I fucked up. I ruined my life and that is why I am standing here today. I could have had a life. I could have helped my sister with her homework, she would be held captive today in her mind, emotionally scarred enough that now she has to live in a wheelchair. My mother, she wouldn't have to be crying every day because of what I had done. My father," Harry heard Raito's throat choke up. "He could have had a longer life and now, because of me, he's dead." Harry flinched at the self-loathing evident in his voice. "He was so happy. He was so happy to see that I wasn't something he was afraid of but he didn't know that I saw. And Misa, oh poor, Misa-Misa, why must I'd done something so idiotic? Do you want to know what happened to her?" Harry really didn't want to know but Raito didn't wait for his new roommate's answer. "She killed herself." Harry flinched. Tear started to consume his green eyes. Raito breathed in. "On Valentine's day. She killed herself and you know what, she killed for me. And because of my selfishness, they're all mentally or physically dead! And…Ryuuzaki…Ryuuzaki…He…He…"
It was completely silent in the long white hall. Raito had stopped talking.
"I apologize." Raito said quietly. Harry had to strain to hear it. "I truly didn't…I have yet to take my pills. They keep me calm." Harry nodded, still not able to say anything. He may have a bad life but this teen, no, man's life was horrific. Harry didn't know how he's not insane. They walked further. Raito sighed.
"I guess I'll continue explaining." Harry wiped the tear from his eyes. Raito didn't look at him. "There are four color groups and codes. One, the Red. The Red's are the dangerous. Get close to them and they will try to rip your heads off. They are isolated from the rest of the colors, locked firmly in straight jacket. I would know, I used to be one of them until they finally got it into their small brains that I'm harmless without one object that is now thankfully long gone." Harry listened silently. He recalled Knight talking about his roommate killing thousands of people with a black notebook…? He was still unsure but knew not to bring it up. Raito might get into one of his episodes again and Harry rather not have that happen again.
"Next, the Green. The Green's can be mildly crazy. They will try to severely hurt you if you anger them and they are usually sedated to be clam. They're not that bad if you get to know them.
"Next are the Yellow's. The Yellow's are harmless. In fact, they tend to stay away from other people. They are the ones trying to commit suicide. Harmless little buggers. Still wonder why they didn't move Seth there. Sure showed signs of committing suicide if that knife said anything.
"Next are us little idiots. The ones simply committing come petty crimes and so on and so forth bla, bla, bla. We're nothing important. I'm only here because I'm harmless but I know that I probably, no, most definitely won't be getting out of here in a life time. Not that I don't deserve it. I was actually going to get the Death Penalty but I had tons of people on my side that supported me; my killings really. This was the least I could get and I'm thankful. While I do make billions of people shiver, I make trillions of other worship me like a god. It was all that I wanted. They believe that I will escape and continue my killing spree but now with my mind almost secure, I realize what I had done and that I will never redeem myself and that I have no human rights but I don't really care now. Everyone here treats me like an equal human being. It's amazing here. It's great here. This is now my new home." Raito smiled. Harry couldn't help but smile himself. They walked in silence.
Raito finally stopped when he reached a door. Unlike the others Harry had seen, either grey or white, this one was Blue. Raito smiled as he opened the door.
Harry stepped in and looked amazed. There were all kinds of games and kids, some younger than him, going all the way to three, and some older than him, looking at least in their late twenties. Harry looked in awe as some gambled, a ginning five year old kid cheating by taking an ace out of his sock and winning some money from the other groaning teens he was playing, to a man with a triangular beard in his late twenties, probably going to be thirty or so, playing a game of packman. The room was huge and everyone was grinning and laughing with each other. It painfully reminded him of Hogwarts but much better. The people here were much more united. He could see. Everyone was wearing something of their color; one boy had a yellow wristband, one teen girl even had green braces, and this one guy with a crazy glint in his eyes had six red piercings on one ear and a red chain connecting one of his ear piercings to a red lip piercing. Harry gapped. Raito grinned at his reaction. Harry glared playfully at him, shutting his mouth firmly. Raito stuck his tongue out and only then did Harry notice that Raito had a tongue piercing that glinted red. Harry blinked and then searched the older teen's face and noticed three yellow piercings on his right ear.
Raito laughed. "Don't worry, you won't have to get a piercing; you can get anything you want. Here." Raito had placed something in his hand. He looked down to see a blue ring. He looked around and noticed that everyone too had one. He slipped in on, taking a liking to it immediately. Raito laughed.
"Looks good! You gonna get a yellow ring?" Harry shrugged. He wasn't all that sure what he wanted. There were so many to choose from and he didn't even know that many. "You have to keep that one when you're in one of the Blue rooms. You're only allowed to enter the Yellow and Blue doors, as long as you wear the blue band. White rooms you are not allowed to go into. Those are for the faculty members like Theo, you call him Knight, right? I need to tell you something but once we get to our room. Now," Raito took a deep breath.
"HEY GUYS!" Head swerved to Raito. He exhaled and smiled. "Everyone, this Harry Potter. He's new here because his uncle wanted to get rid of him. Be kind, alright?" They nodded. There was suddenly a handful of comments.
"Hey Harry!" "Sup bro." "Hola, amigo!" "Bienvenue!" "Yo!"
And all kinds of other things, some in different languages. Harry smiled. He could see why Raito liked it here.
Both of them ran in and played games with the others. Some hours had passed and Harry was starting to get tired. His cheeks were flushed from all the laughing he did with others and fast talking. It wasn't until he felt a hand on his shoulder did he look up.
It was Raito. He smiled and nodded towards the door. They both exited, waving and yelling goodbyes over all the other yelling. Both of them had eaten their 'dinner' when some kid came back with dozens of Hotdogs. The two walked back, Harry following Raito, being sure to keep an eye on where he was going. They soon came to a stop at a long hall of Yellow doors. Raito smiled.
"Remember, seven down on the right." Harry counted as they walked. Their door was just like any other; yellow. Raito turned to Harry.
"All doors are locked once we both enter for the night. Follow my lead." Raito placed his hand on a scanner to his right that Harry just noticed. There were three beeps and a red laser going under the hand. The red laser popped out all of a sudden and scanned Raito face and then his eye. Harry watched in fascination when the scanner beeped another three times and the red laser disappeared.
"Raito Yagami – confirm."
Raito stepped away and pushed Harry up. Harry was nervous but when it was his turn, all it did was tickle. He laughed as he stepped away. Raito stepped up again. The scanner suddenly looked like an ATM. Raito beckoned Harry to come closer and Harry did just that. He looked closer at the buttons.

Raito clicked the 'GO TO SLEEP' button and Harry watched the Yellow door slide to the left. The two teens walked in and the door slide back behind them, a loud click sounding in the room. The door was locked.
"It'll stay locked until five O'clock in the morning – That's when we're allowed to leave. We have to be in bed by twelve and on special occasions, like a party, two O'clock as long as the faculty members have an eye on all of us." Raito said. Harry finally remembered something.
"Hey, Raito, how did you know that my uncle got tired of me and sent me here?" It was on his mind for some time and he had almost forgotten about it. Raito looked at him. They were both changing in their pajama's, Harry's having been unpacked by someone else and placed neatly.
"Theo had told us during lunch what you had come here for and I had deducted when I was explaining this institution and when we were talking as to why you're here, that you hated your uncle. He neglects you, correct? When you mentioned your aunt, uncle, and cousin, I could see that you hated them but you didn't truly have the tired eyes of someone who got beaten so you being neglected was the first thing that came to mind. It's obvious that your parents are dead and that you obviously weren't adopted so I came to the conclusion that your only blood family had taken you unwillingly. Anyone would have guessed the same too." Raito said when he saw Harry's flabbergasted face.
They both laid in their beds, Raito on the right and Harry on the left, yellow sheets and a white pillow. They both had night stands behind their beds and a giant clothing drawer that they shared in the back in the middle. Harry laid his glasses on the night stand. He noticed his wand was placed on the stand too. Thank god they didn't throw it away.
They both stayed in silence but Raito broke it soon.
"Harry, I need to warn you." Harry looked to his right and stared at the blurry figure of Raito laying in his yellow bed.
"Of what?" The confusion was clearly evident in his voice. Raito looked over to him with his caramel eyes.
"Theo." Harry bolted up and stared at Raito.
"What's there bad about him? He's so kind!" Harry all but yelled. He was angry that Raito would say such bad things about Knight. Raito glared at him as he shot up too but not as fast.
"You can't make out someone by a first impression. I've been here longer than you have! And don't get me wrong, Theo will act like this whenever you meet him. You feel happy. I can tell. There's something different about him. He's bad news. He's not the same like us. He's…unnatural." Raito stayed silent clam while Harry was fuming but he slowly calmed down. Raito was right. He lay back down with a sigh.
"Fine, fine. I'll be cautious around him but I still think you're wrong. Knight is not a bad guy and trust me, I know what bad guys are!" Harry yelled, slowly losing his calmness once again. Raito glared at him, making him flinch. He swore that Raito eyes had flashed red.
"You think you know a bad guy? You think you know one?! You don't know! You don't fucking know! You aren't one! You aren't like me! I know what a bad guy is like! I know! I AM ONE! I KILLED THOUSANDS OF FUCKING PEOPLE! THOUSANDS OF FUCKING INNOCENT PEOPLE! SO DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE SAY YOU KNOW WHAT I AM!"
Harry gapped and sat up, his back all the way pressed against the wall, scared out of his mind.
Raito was right, Harry thought. He didn't know bad guys. He only knew of bad guys. He was through Voldemort's eyes but not his mind.
Harry turned back to Raito. Raito also pushed himself against the wall.
"R-Raito, I'm sorry! I didn't –"
"Shut up."
"N-no, I want to say –"
"Harry I mean it shush!"
Harry immediately closed his mouth. Raito's eyes were wide with terror. He was looking towards the door.
There was a smaller scanner on the right of the door. There was a small, almost unnoticeable light. It flashed red, beeping loudly. After two minutes, it went down to red, to yellow, and after five minutes, to green and then disappeared, along with the beeping.
Raito let out a huge sigh of relief.
There was silence.
"I know that…Theo seems like the greatest, most handsome guy in the universe but trust me when I say; he is not what he seems. You wouldn't understand…You didn't see his drag Seth out of the third floor, you didn't see him take him to the punishment room. Theo is the only one who punishes people. And the Shinigami King only know what he does to them in there –I never want to find out. You didn't see Seth come out of there. No bodily harm to him but you could tell right off the bat –He wasn't ever the same. I hated that annoying brat but I felt so bad for him. A week later and one jump, no one was surprised. Not even the faculty members were surprised. They had already gotten all the death paperwork done, all they needed was the time when he died. You don't –You just wouldn't understand."
Harry was silent. It was scary listening to Raito. Seeing Raito's blank yet horrified face. He was also confused. Shinigami King? What the hell was that and why such an odd term.
"Theo, he has….a way of getting into your head. Don't trust him….with anything."
And with that, the lights turned off.
.
A/N: Wow…It's been a while hasn't it?
I am so, so, very sorry. And even more sorry to say that I would've never finished this if AT&T hadn't fucked up and grant us no Wi-Fi, internet access, and if I hadn't gotten my phone stolen.
Well, uh, I can't say I'll 100% update soon but I will try to. It's been like…a year? Maybe more? My weeaboo self is gone and more clear-minded me is here.
Alright, about the fic.
Raito is mentally unstable. That much is obvious, haha. I never said this in the fic but I'm stating here and now that when Raito says "THOUSANDS OF FUCKING INNOCENT PEOPLE," he DOES NOT believe that they're innocent. At least, not a majority. He still believes that what he did was right and justice. He's trying his best to think that way. Reason as to why I put the bit about the mindset being your greatest ally and deadliest enemy.
Since it's been so long and I was an idiot not to write any notes (maybe I did. I'll double check), I had completely forgotten where this was going. I do believe that Raito goes to Hogwarts and the Orders secret hideout where Sirius granted them permission to use (I cannot remember how to spell it and no internet connection, remember?) and that was a plan of mine from before. I had a good plot. Probably so good that my younger self thought I would remember it. Well, that was wrong. But let's hope I remember it or find some notes. Until next time!
