Roger sat on a branch near the top of the tree, one arm around the trunk, feet swinging and occasionally hitting Maurice, who was on the branch below. Maurice hadn't gotten the hint that he should move yet and continued sitting where he was, occasionally complaining about being kicked in the head.

It wasn't like Roger was wearing shoes, Maurice could deal with it or move.

"Roger could I come sit by you?" Maurice asked, looking up at him. Roger kicked him in the head again. "Ouch, Roger!"

"That was a no, by the way," Roger said. He was having a fairly nice day, considering everything that had been going on lately. Jack trying and failing to catch pigs every day, Piggy being an annoying, fat bastard, Ralph ordering everyone around… it was nice, being alone (well, almost) and sitting in a tree. Roger had always liked climbing trees.

"I'm coming up anyway," Maurice said, standing up on his branch. It creaked dangerously. Roger had a very good idea that if both him and Maurice were on his branch, the branch would break off and they'd both die. He kicked Maurice in the face. Maurice shrieked and clung to the trunk.

Roger sighed. He'd have to go down there, then.

He slipped off of his branch and hung for a minute, holding onto his branch with one hand and trying to get himself securely on Maurice's branch. He eventually got it, falling a little but managing to catch himself in time. The branch bent lower. Shit. He'd have to go down farther.

Eventually, Roger got to the ground. Maurice was still up there.

"Roger? Roger, I'm stuck," Maurice said. Roger rolled his eyes.

"Why'd you go up in the first place?" he asked.

"Because I wanted to be by you! But now I can't get down and I'm really scared," Maurice said. Roger sighed.

"What do you want me to do about it?" he asked. Maurice responded with a despondent wail. "God damn it, Maurice, I can't carry you! You're twice my size!"

"Just come up here and hold my hand!" Maurice wailed. Roger sighed and began the laborious process of climbing back up the tree. Once he got close enough to reach Maurice, he stuck out his hand. Maurice grabbed onto it and edged down to the branch Roger was on.

It was an extremely slow process. Sometimes Maurice would get scared and Roger would have to wait while he got himself under control. Once or twice both of them nearly fell and cracked their heads open. An infinite number of times Roger debated just shoving Maurice off of the damn tree. That would get him down.

Once they got to the bottom, Maurice was bright and bubbly again. He let go of Roger's hand and hugged him tightly. "Thank you, Roger!" he said. He kissed Roger on the cheek. Roger turned red.

"Don't do that," he muttered.

"But why?" Maurice asked, wide-eyed. "I like you, Roger. Isn't that what people do when they like each other?"

"I'll leave you up there next time, I swear," Roger said. Maurice grinned.

"You wouldn't do that."

"Wanna try it out?" Roger asked. Maurice kept smiling. "And stop smiling. It's weird."

"You're the weird one, for never being happy. Can't I just have fun with my best friend and maybe kiss him a little?" he asked. Roger sighed.

It was going to be a long day.
