Bittersweet Victory

The boat ride to Gondor was short. Once they got to their destination, they found the battle was already in progress. Legolas and Gimli scanned the group of Orcs crowding onto the docking area.

"About time!" The Orc in charge snapped, "Get off your ships, filthy water rats, there's knife work to be done here." With a snort, the Orc turned away to yell at his soldiers about getting back to fighting when Mya, Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn jumped out of the boat at the same time.

"Plenty of Orcs here for the two of us," Gimli grunted to Legolas. "May the best Dwarf win." Legolas shot Gimli an amused look as Mya cleared her throat.

"Don't you mean the three of us?" She asked. Aragorn shook his head as Gimli stammered out an apology to the Elfin Warrioress and they faced the oncoming tide together.

The battle was over before it began. With the help of the ghosts, they defended the White City and won. As they made their way into the city, Mya was distressed by all the death surrounding her. Legolas grabbed her hand, understanding the despair he felt radiating off his beloved. Suddenly Mya stopped.

"No," she gasped before releasing her Prince's grasp and running into the field they were passing.

"Mya!" Legolas called after her. She ignored him and ran to where she saw a familiar shock of golden blonde hair.

"Eowyn!" Mya sobbed, shaking her friend. The princess of Rohan moaned lightly and opened her eyes.

"I got him," she said weakly.

"Who?" Mya asked.

"The King of the Nazgul and his filthy steed." Eowyn said, her voice was slightly stronger. "He said no man could kill him. I'm not a man, so I stabbed him through the face after Merry sliced his calf." Mya chuckled weakly as she looked around for Merry. He was being tended to by Pippin.

"Where's Fred?" Mya asked. Eowyn looked around, her face falling when she didn't see the red-haired Wizard.

"I lost track of him," she said. "I'm sorry, Mya."

"It's okay," Mya squeezed her arm. "We'll find him."

"Find who?" Fred asked, coming up behind the girls with Legolas.
"You," Mya said. "Eowyn was worried about you." Fred grinned, then sobered as he noticed Eowyn's injuries.

"I survived this one." He said, "looks like you got yourself pretty injured though, My Lady." Eowyn nodded as she tried to hide the twinges of discomfort running through her body.

"She killed the King of the Nazgul." Mya said, "it's supposed to be impossible."

"For a man." Legolas said, with a grin. Mya looked at her fiance who leaned over and scooped Eowyn up in his arms. He met Mya's eyes and nodded towards Fred, who was barely standing.

"What do you mean?" Fred asked, as Mya got the hint and caught him before he collapsed.

"The legend states that a man cannot kill a Nazgul." Legolas said, "we always thought it meant that they had to be killed by a beast, but obviously it means that a man literally cannot kill one."

"But Eowyn's not a man." Fred said, beginning to catch on. He tried to steady himself as the ground rocked beneath him.

"Easy there, Freddy." Mya said, lending him her shoulder. "And you're right, Eowyn isn't a man. So she could have killed a Nazgul."

"Could have?" Legolas raised his eyebrow at her. "Mya, she stabbed him through the face with her sword. I think that makes it a definite can kill a Nazgul." Mya looked at him blankly while strugging to hold Fred's weight before she snickered at herself.

"You know what I mean." She said, leading the way back to the city. They made their way into the Healing Rooms where Aragorn immediatly started instructing the Healers on how to heal Eowyn's wounds. Fred stood there silently watching as the woman who was like a sister to him worked with the Man to save the Woman he was growing to adore.

Legolas came up behind him and clapped him on the shoulder. Fred looked up at the Elf with a smile in his eyes, glad for the companionship. Gimli too, came over and stood next to the young Wizard, lending his support. Together, they waited for their friends to finish. Finally, Mya came over and looked at them with a smile in her eyes.

"She won't be fighting in any battles any time soon, but she's going to be fine." She said. Fred felt almost faint with relief. Legolas caught him before he could hit the ground.

"You should be in bed." The Elf said, "you need to heal too." Fred nodded and Legolas helped him to his room so he could rest. Mya watched them go as Aragorn came up behind her.

"We need to gather everyone we can." He said to her. "This is a lull in the storm, but Sauron will attack with more force than before." Mya nodded.

"I know," she said. "My father sent everyone he could from both Rivendell and Lothlorien. I have no idea if Tharanduil is going to send anyone."

"We will gather in the Steward's room, in an hour. Bring Legolas and Gimli with you." Mya nodded and Aragorn walked out of the room, looking for Gandalf. Mya watched Eowyn sleep for a moment longer before walking out to find the rest of her friends.

An hour later, Aragorn sat waiting for his friends in the Steward's chamber. As he wasn't crowned King yet, he didn't feel it was right to meet in the Throne room. He turned around as the doors opened and Mya walked in, followed by Merry, Pippin, Legolas, Gimli and the new Steward, Faramir. Gandalf entered with Haldir a few minutes later.

"Welcome, Haldir." Mya said, smiling at her friend.

"Thank you, Lady Mya." Haldir answered before turning to Legolas. "My Prince, your father sends this message about the Dark Elves." Legolas nodded and tucked the letter away. The news about the defective Dark Elves could wait until after the issue with Sauron was settled.

"So," Mya asked, looking at Aragorn. "What's the plan?"

"I don't know." Aragorn said to her before he looked at Gandalf. "What do you say?"

"Since Frodo passed into Mordor, I haven't seen him." Gandalf answered. "My heart tells me he's still alive, but his stregnth is waning."

"Sam, Harry and George went with him," Mya said. "He's not alone." Gandalf nodded his agreement.

"You are right, Myana." Gandalf said, "I hope they can keep him strong as they make their way to Mount Doom."

"They will make it." Legolas said.

"Sauron's forces are focusing on him now. He has to be able to sense his ring within his lands." Mya said.

"And with the death of his head Nazgul, he has to be getting desperate." Gimli observed.

"There has to be a way to bring the focus off what's happening in his lands, and onto us." Haldir said, Mya looked at him and nodded.

"Kinda like a magic trick." Mya said, everyone looked at her curiously and she explained. "There are non magical humans where I studied who are very good at slight of hand. They keep your focus on one thing while doing something else." Gandalf nodded and winked at her.

"A diversion?" Legolas asked, Mya nodded. "That would work. If we draw his forces out, all his focus will be on us, not Frodo and the others as they make their way to Mount Doom."

"How do we draw them out?" Haldir asked.

"I will do that." Aragorn said, "Sauron will respond to me."

"High chance of Death, little chance of success?" Gimli asked, looking at his companions. "What are we waiting for?"
