Chapter 41: Stairway to Heaven

Twenty years later

Alec was lying in the bed next to the seats where Magenta and I were sitting. His breathing was deep and slow, right now he was sleeping. Magenta and I had done our best to heal his wounds after Jace and Isabelle had carried him home. From their breathless stuttering we concluded that they must have been attacked by an huge and ancient monster demon that was said to have been extinct for millions of years.

Alec, being the responsible old brother had saved Jace from some risky maneuver and the demon had had the chance to attack him from behind. He had lost so much blood but with Magenta's help I had been able to stop the blood. Although Alec should have been fine then his condition didn't seem any better. Finally we discovered that some poison was running through his veins. Neither the shadowhunters nor me had known an antidote. Alec was slowly dying away from us.

"You know what that means?" I asked Magenta. She nodded. She didn't cry but she looked lost.

"How long?" She asked.

"Maybe half an hour. Give or take ten minutes." I guessed. No emotion was in my voice. Alec had been my life. He was dying but I would follow him. We would stay together, I told myself. "Go and call Raphael. You shouldn't be alone now." I told her. The truth was I wanted some time with Alec on my own. She seemed to understand and left me alone.

"Baby, wake up." I shook Alec. I made sure earlier that he didn't suffer any pain so he could say farewell to Magenta. I took his hand when he opened his eyes.

"I'm dying, am I not?" He asked calmly. I only nodded. He looked in my eyes. His eyes were sad. "I will wait for you. I love you." A single tear rolled down my cheeks.

"You won't need to wait for long. I need to confess something." His eyes connected with mine. "My life is connected to yours. When you die so will I." Tears began streaming down his face. He took my face into his hands and kissed me.

"Why?" He asked. "Why didn't you tell me? I could have –"

"There's nothing you could have done. It was my decision and I don't regret it." I kissed him softly. "You gave me a reason to life and without you I don't want my life anymore."

Just in this moment Magenta entered the room again. Following her was Raphael Santiago. They had been together for 21 years now and they were still happy. I had long ago accepted him because there was nothing I could do. Alec hadn't. He still avoided Raphael and when they were in the same room he simply ignored him. Therefore I was shocked when Alec greeted Raphael.

"I want you to know that I'm glad Magenta has found someone like you. You remember that day when she first told us about you? I was the worst fight we ever had. But still she stood up for you against all my threats and pleas. In this time I worried you would let her fall as soon as you were bored. She gave so much to you and I doubted that you would do the same. But now, twenty years later you still stick to her. I'm glad she has you." He stood up and hugged Magenta and Raphael. He turned to Magenta. "I love you and want you to be happy. If you can be happy with him then you have my blessing." I saw tears forming in both their eyes but Magenta seemed happy.

"Thank you daddy. This means so much to me." She kissed his cheek. Raphael also thanked Alec.

"I'm weak." Alec stated. "I won't have much more time left. Less than five minutes." Magenta understood and they both left us alone. We climbed back into the bed. Neither of us spoke. There were no words left. We shared another passionate kiss. I closed my eyes.

Moments later I felt light. It was like flowing through the air. I opened my eyes and looked down on my own body. Next to me Alec took my hand. He too looked down at our bodies. "Forever together." I whispered. He nodded. Then Magenta came back in the room. She sat down on the bed and cried. Raphael sat next to her and held her. "I hope wherever they are now they'll be together." She sobbed. "They will." Raphael told her.

Alec pulled me away from them. "They will be fine with some time." He smiled sadly. Together, hand in hand, we took the stairway to heaven that would lead us to the next stage on our way.
