New Hampshire

Dan POV

I woke up at about 9am to Phil moving around the room.

"What are you doing?" I asked, keeping my eyes closed. I heard something hit the ground with a loud thud, causing me to open my eyes. Looked to where the noise came from to see Phil's straighteners on the floor. I looked up to Phil to see his hand over his heart.

"You scared me!" He said. I just laughed. "I didn't even know you were awake." He said as he picked his straighteners up. He walked over to a plug socket, plugging them in.

"Well I wouldn't have been if you weren't making so much noise." I said.

"Sorry." He said, smiling sheepishly. "It's a good thing you're up anyway. We have to leave in an hour." He informed me.

"Where are we going again?" I asked.

"Echo Lake." He told me.

"Oh yeah. Ugh, walking." I complained.

"Oh shut up." He laughed. "Come on, get up." He said. I groaned but complied.

After having a shower, getting dressed, and sorting my hair out, we left 20 minutes early so we could get some breakfast in a café down the road from the hotel. Once we had finished eating, we walked back to the hotel to grab the car and then drive to Echo Lake.

From what I had seen when I was looking this place up, it was amazing. You could go there and sit by the lake, or go hiking to the top of Cathedral Ledge, where there was supposed to be an amazing view, and you can go rock climbing. However, the best time to go was probably in the summer, rather than in February. It was quite cold at the moment, meaning we were going to freeze, but we had decided we would struggle through it for the amazing sights.

It only took 25 minutes to get there, so we arrived just before 11am. Once we had paid to get in, we were free to go wherever we liked. We had decided we would sit by the lake for a while, then make our way up to Cathedral Ledge and stay up there until we were ready to leave. There were two ledges to visit, Cathedral Ledge and White Horse Ledge. We were going to go the long way and visit both, to make the most of the experience.

We made our way to the lake, and found a place to sit for a couple of hours. It was quite cold there, so we had brought a couple of blankets to sit on and cover ourselves up with. We only had three though, so we were both sitting on one, and then had one each to cover ourselves with.

We stayed there for about 3 hours, just talking and relaxing. We ended up lying down, and at some point, it hadn't gotten slightly colder, which meant that we had moved closer to each other, practically lying on top of each other. We decided it would e a good time to go up to the ledges, so we collected our stuff, and started off on the journey.

The walk to Cathedral Ledge took about an hour and a half, not including the amount of times we stopped. Once we reached the top, we walked as close to the edge as we could, and look out at the view. From up here, there was a view of Saco River Valley. If you turned, there was a view of the White Mountains, as the sheet we were given when we first got here told me.

We moved back from the edge, finding a place where we could still see the view, and then set out the blankets again. It was significantly colder up here as we were up higher, so we were huddled closer together. We carried on our conversations from by the lake, talking about anything that came to mind. It wasn't until we had been up there for about 45 minutes that a certain conversation came up.

"Hey, you know what today is, right?" Phil asked me, looking out at the view.

"No, what?" I said, turning to look at him.

"14th of February." He said. I thought for a second before realising what that meant.

"Oh right, Valentines Day." I said, not sounding too thrilled about it.

"What's so bad about that?" He asked.

"I never said it was bad." I told him.

"Well you didn't sound too happy about it." He said. I sighed.

"It's just that, why should it matter to me when I don't have someone to spend it with?" I said.

"Well you have me." He said, quieter.

"Yeah, but we're just friends." I said, looking back out to the view. There was a pause, and then,

"We don't have to be." Phil said in a voice so quiet, that I almost didn't hear him.

"What do you mean?" I asked, looking at him again.

"Well, we could be a couple. Just for today, obviously. We could do stupid couple-y things, like go out for dinner when we get back, and cuddle up in the hotel room and watch some rented DVDs after." He said. His face was red, which was probably because of the cold, but I'm sure it was redder than before. I didn't say anything for a long while, causing him to look away from me and back out at the view. After a couple of minutes of silence from both of us, I finally spoke.

"Does it have to only be for today?" I asked, feeling my face heat up, but the coldness up here stopped it from showing on my face. He looked back at me.

"Not if you don't want." He said.

"Seriously?" I asked. He nodded. "Wait, so does this mean that we're, you know… together?" I asked, not sure what to call it.

"If you want." He said.

"No, it's not just what I want." I told him.

"Well I want it, do you?" He asked. I thought for a second before smiling.

"Yeah, it is." I said, nodding.

"Well then, yes we are." He said. I smiled at him as his hand found mine.

"We should probably head back down if we want to go out for dinner." I said, after another 5 minutes of sitting in silence.

"Well then, let's go." He said, getting up and pulling me up with him. We collected our stuff and started back down.

The walk down didn't take as long as the walk up, only about an hour and a quarter. We left, getting into the car and driving back to the hotel. We put our stuff in the room, then decided to look online for good places to go out. We found a little restaurant not too far from where we were staying, so we got changed into nicer clothes, then made our way there.

We spent the evening talking about everything, just like back at the lake. It was almost like it wasn't a date, but rather two friends who decided to get dinner, but that was what made it better. On the way home, we stopped by a shop to rent some DVDs to watch, like Phil had said, then made our way back to the hotel.

Once we were there, we changed into our pyjamas and then both climbed onto Phil's bed, putting on the first movie, Forrest Gump, and then cuddling into each other, as promised. By the end of the movie, I had tears running down my face. I had always loved this film, but it always made me cry at then end.

"Are you okay?" Phil asked beside me.

"Yeah." I said, wiping my tears away. "I knew there was a reason I didn't watch this film with people around." I joked.

"It's cute." He remarked. I felt myself blush. "Hey Dan?" Phil asked just as the credits rolled.

"Yeah?" I asked, wiping the last of my tears away.

"Now that we're together, can I kiss you?" He asked, suddenly going shy.

"You don't have to ask, you know?" I laughed.

"So I can?" He asked hopefully.

"Of course, you spoon." I said. With that, he leaned forwards and slowly connected our lips. The kiss didn't last very long, but it was definitely a long time overdue. When we broke apart, Phil rested his forehead on mine, looking at me.

"Now was today really so bad?" He asked. I laughed slightly.

"I guess not." I said. We kissed again, then put on another film.

After watching a couple more films, we decided it was probably a goo idea to go to bed. We still had a couple of days left in New Hampshire, but we wanted to make the most of them, and being tired wouldn't be the best way. We decided to both sleep in Phil's bed tonight, and made a reminder to get a double bed in the next state, which was Vermont.
