Authors notes: I must apologize for the delay in an update. Thank you for the review/PM's for the first part of this story. Sadly real life got in the way, and my time was taken up helping my uncle into aged care. The problem being he is in Australia and I am in the UK. It was far from an easy time for all concerned as my sister and myself are now his next of kin, and he somebody we both love dearly. Finally it resulted in me making the journey to the other side of the world to help things along.
With all that going on my muse deserted me, not only did it leave the building, it had a real temper tantrum before stomping off completely.
Thank you to ssa-rtune for the beta on this chapter. Great to have her as a beta for quite a few of my chapters with both Courting Disaster and also this chapter of Doppelganger, especially as she won the best season two finale category in the above Rizzles fan awards with her story 'Love's Labours Lost'. . That said, all and any mistakes are still mine.
Hope you enjoy the continued story.

"The Hell?!" Jane almost roared when she heard what Maura had to say. Jumping up she paced uneasily alongside the couch where the blonde remained sitting. Finally in a slightly more controlled tone Jane said. "So let me get this straight, Paddy Doyle is dead, a cop from DC went undercover and took over his identity. An NCIS agent is in witness protection and you're their handler!" Finally Jane stopped pacing and looked at Maura as if she had never seen the woman before. "But you can't lie," she said accusingly. her hands now flailing about such was her agitation. "And what the Hell is an ME doing being a handler for NCIS? Oh no, wait. It makes sense now, no wonder you were so mad at me when I shot Paddy Doyle, or whatever that cops name is. You knew who he really was, and that's why he was there. To protect you."
"Jane," Maura's tone was pleading, her eyes trying to convey the truth of her words although she looked worried that Jane would not want to rationally discuss what she had just learned. "I promise you I really am the person you know, the person you became friends with," and silently Maura thought to herself. 'The person who fell in love with you,' but she knew now was not the time to bring up that particular subject - indeed, if it was ever going to be the right time. Out-loud she added. "I just couldn't tell you about this until Agent Gibbs gave me permission. And you're right, I can't lie which is why I had to think of Lieutenant Cheney as Doyle, we never used his real name at any time. As for why me, well that's where it gets complicated. I really am adopted, my father really was Paddy Doyle, only what you don't know is that Caitlin Todd, the NCIS agent in witness protection, turned out to be my twin sister. We only found out we were twins by chance. That came to light just before Caitlin became embroiled in the case that led to all this, and as far as we know, it's information that has now been removed from any database to protect us both. Not because of Doyle being our father, after all my DNA had to stay in the system, but because of Caitlin being in witness protection. I doubt even Barry could find a record of my having a twin, let alone that it is Caitlin. It made sense for me to become their handler after I was offered the job in Boston. It was a pure coincidence that I took the Chief Medical Examiners post here, but one that ultimately suited the needs of NCIS."
"But the DNA Maur? Doyle, Cheney, whoever, cut his hand to give you the DNA, it was caught on the morgue security footage, why go to all that trouble?"
"We needed to make sure the cover was secure. Cheney knew where Doyle had been buried, he stole some DNA from the corpse and covered the transfer with the scene that you all witnessed from the security cameras. We had to show that I was Paddy Doyle's daughter, but make it look like Cheney was Doyle in order for this to work. You know how many dirty cops; law enforcement personnel in general, were in that book of Paddy's, they needed to be able to see the transferal of DNA. BPD security footage was the ideal medium for them to witness that happening. My reactions that day were all real, I had no idea what Cheney had planned, it genuinely took me by surprise. He heard about us finding Collin like we did and decided to run with the chance of making his cover real. Cheney knew about Collin because of living as Doyle. I genuinely didn't know of Collin's existence, it was a real shock to discover that not only did I have a twin, but I also had a half brother. I'm just glad Cheney had also slipped in a note explaining what he had done so I knew what to test for with the DNA because I doubt I would have been able to hide my concerns from you otherwise."
Finally Jane calmed down and slumped back onto the couch next to Maura, running her hands through her hair distractedly. "You may not be able to lie, but you can certainly deflect the truth if you need to, remind me to never underestimate that ability again," there was pause. "So what happened to change everything?" Jane asked after a minutes silence. "Doyle - or Cheney - is officially in prison, so I assume Cheney is also now in witness protection, or soon will be. Is this why it's all gone wrong? Because I shot him!"
Knowing Jane would place the blame at her own door if anything happened to a fellow police officer, or to her sister, Maura was quick to reassure the taller woman. "No Jane. It isn't. It's all because of a rogue FBI agent. The person who was responsible for all of this right from the start. "
"The FBI," Jane snorted her derision, remembering Gabriel Dean's less than stellar performances as an Agent in the past. "I might have known. Who is it? Wait... oh God, Dean didn't know about Cheney in the warehouse did he? He isn't the agent we're going to be investigating?"
"That's the part we don't know - yet. Agent Dean has stated on the official record that he genuinely believed it was Doyle he shot. Gabriel has not said anything to make people believe he knows Doyle is Cheney, but he has been less than forthcoming about why he was in Boston. All we have is knowledge that an unknown agent shot a major drug dealer in an alleyway in DC and Caitlin witnessed the action. It was dark, late at night and she couldn't even tell if it was a man or woman, but it was definitely somebody who had just come out of the local FBI offices. Unfortunately several people, all agents, left at the same time and it could be any one of them. It was all checked after the Doyle shooting in case there was a connection to the drug killing, since an FBI agent was involved. Unfortunately Agent Dean was in in the area where Caitlin witnessed the murder so he can't be ruled out at this stage. After several attempts were made on Caitlin's life, NCIS, with the help of a Mossad Agent who had heard about a separate assassination attempt, faked Kate's death in order for her to go into witness protection."
"So why Boston, why Paddy Doyle?" Jane's detective mind was taking control of the situation when she began to realize the honesty of Maura's words. For now she bypassed the words 'Mossad Agent', she would ask about that connection at a later date.
"We think the FBI Agent has taken over the drug cartel the dealer ran. Gibbs, thanks to a retired NCIS agent named Mike Franks, found out they were operating through Mexico and then out of Boston harbor. Paddy Doyle was a good cover because he hadn't been seen for years, only two people knew of his death and they're in protective custody. Cheney looked a lot like Doyle so it made sense for him to go undercover. Caitlin Todd was relocated here in case she was spotted because she could be passed off as the Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. No more perfect cover than a twin sister whose identity she could hide behind."
"If it had nothing to do with me shooting Doyle, why has this been compromised now?" Jane finally looked at her friend, seeing the concern about her reaction reflected in the Doctors hazel eyes.
Maura sighed. "One of the people who knew Doyle was dead slipped away from his security detail for a short while. We can't know for sure, but the suspicion is that he may have passed on the information about Doyle's death to other members of Doyle's old gang. A plan was intercepted that gave details on how to try and kill Doyle, or rather Cheney, and Caitlin, two days ago. Gibbs want us to fake a navy death in Boston so he has a legitimate reason to get his team down here to work with Boston Homicide on the case."
Now Jane was confused. "Why homicide? If it's about drugs then shouldn't it be handed over to narcotics."
Maura smiled. "Because you are the people I love and trust Jane. It really is as simple as that, if I trust you, then Gibbs trusts you. Lieutenant Cavanaugh will be calling you all in for a briefing in the morning. Gibbs and his team will arrive the following day after our supposed discovery of a dead sailor."
"Oh." was all the brunette could think of in response.
"Jane," Maura inquired softly and with a slight hesitancy. "Are we okay? I mean … " she trailed off not sure what to say next.
Finally Jane smiled at Maura and took her hand reassuringly. "Yeah Maura, we're good, I just wish I'd known about this from the start, helped take away some of your burden."
Looking down at their joined hands Maura said reverently. "I wish you had been able to do that as well."
Surprisingly Jane had slept well, she'd expected to stay wide awake and ruminate over what she had just learnt. However, having Maura sleepover as normal had relaxed the Detective to such a point that she had easily drifted off to sleep.
The next morning when she arrived at work it was a different story though. Jane could only hope that Cavanaugh called them into his office soon. Frost was in next and as he put a cup of coffee on Jane's desk he raised an eyebrow and cocked his head to one side. Distracted Jane didn't notice until he cleared his throat. "Umm hmm."
"Yeah Frost what is it?" Jane replied, not taking her eyes of their Lieutenants office door which had remained firmly closed. Maura had gone straight to see Cavanaugh when they had arrived for work that morning, and Jane hated waiting.
"What's got you more nervous than a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs?"
That caught Jane's attention and she reluctantly dragged her eyes away from the door. "Whaddya mean?"
"Well," he gestured to her one knee. "I haven't seen you bounce your leg like that since you were questioned over the Paddy Doyle shooting, and you haven't really paid any attention to me since I arrived. So what gives, is it something to do with Maura and that Rachel?"
Knowing there was no point in trying to hide the information Jane said." Yeah," but before she could continue Korsak arrived, and the moment he appeared Sean Cavanaugh emerged from his office and called the three of them over. Grabbing her coffee Jane murmured to Frost. "And you're just about to hear everything. I hope you're ready for this cos it might just blow your mind."
Twenty minutes later the two other Detectives had heard the story for themselves, and all they managed to do was look between Maura and Jane in amazement. Thankfully Sean Cavanaugh just sat back and gave his people time to process all they had learnt, he knew first hand how shocked they would be feeling. It had taken him a little while get over his own surprise, and Cavanaugh wasn't easily surprised after all he had witnessed in his life. Plus he had known Paddy Doyle from years before, and even he had been taken in by Detective Cheney's recent appearance as the mob boss.
"Jane," Barry Frost was the one to break the silence. "I think having my mind blown could have been a slight understatement." He focused his attention on Maura. "Wow Dr Isles, I knew you were a genius, but wow, becoming a handler for NCIS without any police or law enforcement training, that was some gutsy move on your part!"
Vince Korsak shook his head, whistled softly and said, "Seasoned undercover officers couldn't have pulled this off any better than you Doc."
Maura politely inclined her head the other Detectives way. "Thank you Barry, Vince, and I shall take those compliments as they were intended."
Pulling the focus back to the case, Sean lent forward and placed his hands on his desk. "Alright, this is how we're going to set about making a false crime scene. The Doctor can use a body left for medical research as the murder victim. The rest of you need to work out the when and where for placement of the body. Nobody outside of this room and Agent's Gibb's team will be involved in the case. From what I understand he will be bringing his own Medical Examiner and Forensic Scientist as well, so be prepared to pretend that you're unhappy about them barging in on your investigation. We all know there is a pissing contest and turf war when Federal Agents get involved with a police investigation. Live up to that reputation, for once you have my permission to set off some bickering," that comment caused the other Detectives to snicker slightly. "Gibbs, via his computer man Agent Timothy McGee, is sending over a cover story for a sailor from the USS Wasp. The Wasp is a amphibious assault ship and she is currently docked at Massport Marine Terminal, the North jetty, off Northern Avenue as part of Boston Navy week. We need to find," Sean placed his emphasis on the word 'find'. "The body this afternoon so we have time to call in NCIS. Any later and they won't be able to reach us first thing tomorrow. That gives you four hours to come up with a workable plan people, I suggest you get started."
"On it," Jane said, standing up before the others. "I think we need to go to Maura's office and work out the logistics from there. That is the one place where we are less likely to be disturbed."
"Agreed," said Vince as he made his way out of the door. "Ten minutes enough time to get everything together that we might need?"
"Plenty." "Sure." Jane and Frost agreed together.
Maura nodded and said. "I'll see you down there then," before she headed over to the elevators.
"Boston Fish Pier," Jane suggested, perched on the edge of Maura's desk. Maura was sitting in her own chair, Frost and Korsak had claimed the couch.
Korsak shook his head. "Too close to where the ship gonna be docked. What would a sailor be doing down there anyway?"
"Well gee, I don't know, maybe he was busy getting murdered!" Jane answered sarcastically, frustrated that they still hadn't pinpointed a spot to stage the crime scene. "The whole idea is that the sailor had to have been doing something bad in order to piss off another person so much that they would murder him. And it's one of the quieter areas of the harbor."
Korsak shrugged. "You've got a point, and that place is far enough away from other dock areas that Paddy Doyle's gang controlled, so there shouldn't be any suspicion about getting NCIS involved. Alright, Boston Fish Pier it is. Now we just need to decide what would he be doing down there?"
"I don't think it should be drugs," Maura said immediately.
"Why not?" Frost asked as he checked on his tablet for a good place on Boston Fish Pier to use as a dumping ground.
"Because we know there is a drugs cartel operating out of the harbor, and if they get wind of drug deals that they know nothing about they might get spooked."
Jane looked down and smiled broadly at her friend. "Well look at you, using the word spooked in a different context, and you're right, if the cartel think there is drug activity going on that they don't know about then they are more likely to look closely at our investigation." Maura looked thrilled at Jane's compliment while Jane carried on talking. "How about he was meeting up with a cheating wife?"
Again Korsak shook his head. "That would mean us setting up an interview with a woman posing as the wife, no can do."
"Damn," Jane chewed the end of her thumb as she concentrated. "Maybe..."
"I've just got the sailor bio from the Agent McGee Cavanaugh mentioned," Frost interrupted his partner and he read the email that had just pinged on the tablet screen. "And I think it should help us out, they've given the sailor top secret clearance."
Jane smiled briefly, seeing where Frost was going with this. "Let me guess," she said with a pleased look on her face. "He was trying to sell secrets to the highest bidder."
Frost tossed a look Jane's way that was full of cockiness. "Now you're getting on board, that is exactly what I was thinking. Most of it can be a paper-trail, no real need to interview that many people. Best of all it will be easy to falsify. It'll also cover the need for Gibbs and his team to be called in, and not the local NCIS unit. Too much at stake if national secrets are involved."
Maura looked puzzled while she tried to work out the reference that Frost had given. Then understanding crossed her face. "Ah yes, a paper-trail, it means the written or printed record of transactions or judicial opinions, especially when used to incriminate someone. Also known as an Audit trail when used in reference to a formal record or log of the financial transactions of an organization or system, especially a computerized record of such transactions."
Listening to Maura begin to talk, Jane didn't even realize a small smile had graced her features."And she's back," Jane finally said good-naturedly, letting the Doctor know that her teasing was not in any way done out of malice. "Yep you're right Maur. Put simply, we follow what the person has written down in order to seek out a buyer."
With Jane's comments Maura stopped talking, knowing she was about to go off on a tangent, something they didn't need right now. However, Maura couldn't help looking pleased that Jane had allowed her to give them the information she knew about the term without censorship.
Still smiling Jane carried on."Alright, onto manner of death, Maur, you're the expert here, what do you think?"
"The body we will be using was involved in an automotive accident. Because of the head trauma I thought we could present the body as a possible drowning, but with associated blunt force trauma. That way the slight decomposition present in the body can be masked to the untrained eye because of being in the water. The blunt force trauma alone will be enough of a reason for me to declare the death suspicious at the scene. My concern is we often assist other agencies even if they take over an investigation, and that might be something we need to address before they arrive."
Frost had noticeably focused on the computer rather than listen to the details of the corpse. Even so he still looked slightly ill by the time Maura had finished talking. Taking pity on her partner, Jane didn't bother to try and tease the younger man, but her brow furrowed as she gave thought to what Maura had said. It was a valid point.
"Well, we are covered with the ME and computer expert, since both you and Frost know the situation. Our only problem might be the crime scene technicians and forensics. NCIS will want to take over from the crime scene unit at the Pier. We could easily say they asked us to hold the body and leave in situ. It's happened before. What is the NCIS forensic expert like? Would people here know anything about the team?"
Maura's face brightened, "Yes! Especially Abby Sciuto because she has had several scientific papers published. In fact Abby hates working with anyone else. She's rather known for it within the forensic world. Excellent at her job but fiercely independent and generally works without any assistance. She is undoubtedly brilliant, but is considered eccentric and very much a loner within her work environment. That would certainly help matters."
Jane listened, and couldn't help be struck that Maura was almost describing herself, at least when she had first come to Boston. Now, she worked as part of the team, part of the family. Mentally shaking herself, Jane pulled her thoughts back to the task at hand. Jane then sighed, pleased to hear it wasn't going to be as problematic as they first thought. "Alright, that all sounds good," Jane looked at the rest of them. "Anything else we need to consider before we go and set this up?" When the others all shook their heads Jane stood and said. "Okay, as agreed, Maura will move the body to the back entrance, I'll grab the cruiser so we can place it in the trunk with the others things we need to plant on the body to start an investigation. Korsak can let the Lieutenant know we're on the move. Time to set this thing into motion."
Looking around Jane took in the peeling paint alongside the fish warehouse they had used to shield them from the view of any passers-by while they staged the crime scene. The whole warehouse was run down, and frankly it was depressing the Hell out of the lanky Detective. The sooner they got out of there and she placed a tip to Rondo that they were after somebody who was trying to sell state secrets, the sooner they could wrap up their day. Jane knew from her Ma that the homeless man was due to come into the precinct café in about an hours time for his usual meal. It would be the ideal time to plant the seed that should lead to the discovery of the man's body. And the fifty dollars that she would slip him at the same time wouldn't hurt matters either.
Beside her Maura was looking incredibly nervous, and Jane carefully pulled her to one side and asked in a low tone. "Are you alright?"
Maura glanced up at the taller woman, and twisted her hands together. "I know we're doing this as part of a sanctioned undercover operation, but I can't help but feel as though I am breaking the law."
"That's what sets us apart from the criminals Maur. We have feelings of guilt associated with wrong deeds even if those deeds are only imaginary, whereas they have none." Jane rubbed the ME back in a reassuring manner, and slowly she felt the muscles relax under her touch. "While Korsak and Frost are putting down the finishing touches, why don't you begin to tell me about the people who will be arriving tomorrow. Let's start with names and what they do at NCIS, then I thought we could have a drink later this evening, and you could tell me more about their personal traits."
Grateful for the distraction Maura launched into giving the Detective a rundown of who they would be meeting in the morning.
"Vanilla!"
Jane resisted the urge to roll her eyes at Rondo's normal greeting.
"Hmm, hmm, hmmmm, you are looking fine today!"
Getting herself a cup of coffee, Jane sat down next to her informant at the same time Angela arrived with plate of food for Rondo. Waving him off as he went to pay Jane dug around in her pants pocket and said. "Here I've got this."
Taking the bill out of her daughters hand Angela Rizzoli said. "Don't you be putting Rondo off his food with cop talk, I didn't make it to be wasted."
Rondo placed a hand on the older woman's arm and said reassuringly. "It's alright Mrs Vanilla, takes a lot to put me off my food, especially when it's so delicious."
Mollified Angela smiled at him, before turning her attention to other customers, but not without another pointed look at Jane, who merely ignored her mother.
"So Vanilla, what can I do for you today?" Rondo asked as he concentrated on putting ketchup all over his burger and fries.
"Hey, I could just want to catch up with you, see how you're doing."
Rondo paused, raised an eyebrow and gave Jane an incredulous look.
She smiled back at him, "Yeah alright, so I do want something. We had a tip that a sailor was trying to sell national secrets somewhere between Harbor Street and Atlantic Wharf. Plus he is also a suspect in a killing that Frost and I caught late yesterday. I need to try and get to him this afternoon before another agency tries to swoop in and snatch him, and the entire case, out from under us. Think you can manage something on the quiet?"
"For you Vanilla, anything. Rondo is your man."
Genuinely smiling at him, Jane got up, then slipped him the fifty dollars and said quietly. "Phone me as soon as you have news, and there will be another payment if you manage to find him before the afternoon is out."
"You have my word."
And Jane knew he would come through for her, he always did.
Navy Yard:
"Gibbs, Gibbs, Gibbs," Abby Sciuto scurried over to the team leader as fast as her high black boots and black leather mini skirt could manage, the tall woman's voice pitched slightly higher than normal in her excitement.
Glancing fondly at the forensic scientist Jethro Gibbs turned his head towards the goth. "Whatcha got Abs?" He asked, and in contrast to the woman with the black hair, his tone was measured.
Abby jumped to a halt in front of Gibbs, causing the customary pigtails to flap around her head, her face beaming. "The ballistics report, that gun you found was a perfect match."
Slowly a grin formed on Gibbs' face and he lent over to kiss Abby on the cheek. "Good work."
Half an hour later Gibbs had the confession he needed, and now that case was wrapped up he was able to gather the team together and brief them on what they would be doing next.
Surprised to get the call to join Tony, Tim and Ziva, both Abby and the ME Doctor Donald Mallard met up in the elevator as they made their way to Director Vance's office.
"Do you have any idea what this is about?" Abby asked the older man.
In his dulcet British accent Doctor Mallard replied. "None my dear, but never fear I'm sure Gibbs will be his usual forthright self and not keep us in suspense for too long."
"God I hope you're right."
Smiling indulgently at the younger woman Donald Mallard was once again struck by how full of energy the forensic scientist was, especially if she had been consuming her favorite beverage of Caff-Pow. Once they reached the directors office they were shown in straightaway. Abby smiled and automatically made her way over to her lovers side. Former Mossad Agent, now NCIS Agent Ziva David nodded at Abby, lightly brushing her fingers against Abby's by way of a slightly more intimate greeting. Both Abby and Ziva loved that they got to see her girlfriend at work, but they were always aware of the professional standards to which they both adhered. Returning the gesture Abby sat just as Gibbs began to explain the upcoming trip to Boston.
Tony DiNozzo paled, and then a rage he hadn't felt in a long time coursed through him. "Kate's alive?! And you didn't tell us!"
"Yes." Director Vance knew that Tony would be upset. The handsome man projected a cocky persona, but he had a very sensitive side, and he had been very fond of Caitlin Todd. Out of all the Agents involved that day, Tony had taken Kate's 'death' the hardest. "Aside from the handler, only four people from NCIS were to know of her relocation into witness protection. The director of NCIS, Gibbs, Agent David and Doctor Mallard."
Abby looked aghast at her girlfriend, who knew Abby would also not take the news well. Luckily Gibbs had given Ziva a few minutes warning about what was going to be discussed, but Ziva knew Abby would not be happy with her for some time to come. Of all the things Ziva David had done in her past, this was the one secret that she had almost told Abby about on more than one occasion.
"You lied to us," the goth said accusingly at Gibbs, Doctor Mallard and Ziva.
Shaking his head slightly Gibbs replied. "Believe me, if we could have told you we would have done."
"No Gibbs!" Abby shouted, and with Tony stood up, both faces radiating fury. "You lied to us, to us, we're your team, your family. And you decided you couldn't trust us!" Not able to say any more, Abby looked at Tony before the two stormed out of the office. Timothy McGee initially stayed behind, but he looked disappointed, and not saying anything he trailed behind his colleagues.
Moving to go after Abby, Ziva was halted by a calming hand to her arm from Donald Mallard. "Leave them be for a while, they need to process what they have just learned."
"But Ducky, what if she doesn't forgive me?" Emotionally Ziva David was one of the most put together people the ME knew, however he knew when it came to Abby Sciuto the Agent would move heaven and earth to be at her lover's side.
The returning smile was fatherly in nature. "She will, she doesn't just love you, that woman adores you. Yes Abby will be upset, but once she calms down and thinks about things logically she will begin to realize this wasn't done to deceive them but to protect Kate. And once she gets to speak to Kate in Boston tomorrow she will have that understanding cemented."
Gibbs moved to their side, and he placed a tender kiss on the side of Ziva's head. "Ducky is right, Abby will understand once she hears things from Kate's point of view. She'll be hard on you until then, but I have a feeling you can weather anything she throws your way."
Near to tears at the support she was receiving from the two men in her life who were more like Father's to her than her own Father had been, Ziva sniffed, and brushed away the moisture that threatened to fall. "Thank you," she managed to say without her emotions showing too much. Steeling herself for the personal fallout, Ziva also left the Directors office.
"Well," Vance said drolly. "That went about as well as we expected!"
