Chapter 21:
Madame Pomfrey had sent me to my room to sleep for I couldn't do anything for Remus. We had put him in a bed at the infirmary and Madame Pomfrey continued with the blood transfusions. When I arrived at the dorm Peter and James were already up and talking about something. When I closed the door they stared at me like I was a ghost and immediately walked towards me.
'Where have you been? And Remus?' I just shook my head and sat down on my bed, burying my face in my hands. 'Sirius, what happened?'
'I-I fucked up, guys, I bloody fucked it up so much.' I cussed. They stared at each other before sitting by my side. I felt like a girl, ready to talk about my problems with my friends. 'You're gonna hate me for this but… Well. Peter, first… I have to tell you something. Remus and I are going out. Like, we're boyfriends.'
Peter just raised an eyebrow and laughed.
'I already knew, Sirius, I'm not that stupid.'
'Oh, hell…'
'It's okay. I know it must be hard for you and all. I admit I was a little bit angry that you had told James and not me but…'
'Well, we didn't tell James. He caught us kissing.'
'Yeah,' James moaned. 'that image is stuck in my head.'
'Shut up.' I punched his arm. 'Well, let's continue. We were making out in my bed when I suddenly just… Lost control. I only wanted to bit him and drink his blood so I bolted and went to the forest. There…'
I explained everything that had happened, without sparing any detail, so I even told them how I kissed the stranger. James and Peter's scowl had morphed into a disgusted expression that only made my chest clench.
'You nearly killed him…' James was the first to break the ice after a few minutes of complete silence. I just stared at the ground, trying to hold my tears. "You… You cheated on him, and then you tried to kill him."
'I didn't know what I was doing, I just… It was that vampire, that-'
'DOES IT MATTER KNOW? REMUS IS IN THE INFIRMARY, PROBABLY IN COMA, AND WE DON'T EVEN KNOW IF HE'S GONNA GET WELL OR IF HE'S GONNA DIE. FUCK, SIRIUS!" Screamed James, his whole body shaking, the first tears spilling from his eyes. "And you… Don't you remember? You told us that McGonagall had told you that if you ever happened to drink anyone in Hogwarts' blood you would be expelled!'
I hadn't thought of that, I was too worried about Remus dying, obviously. Yet, it didn't worry me at all. I just wished Remus would be safe and expelling me would be just a small punishment compared to what I had done.
'As long as Moony is okay, I don't care. It would serve me right.' I muttered. Peter just stared at the ground and James breathed out, trying to calm himself. 'Remus won't forgive me, and I don't blame him, but if I don't have him… I have no one. I don't have a family and you will be by his side. Obviously, I wouldn't let you leave him alone.'
'Sirius…'
'No, it's okay. I will go and see McGonagall, I'm sure she has already found out about it.' When I arrived at the door I felt my whole body tremble and my eyes filled with tears. 'I nearly killed him James.' I croaked. 'I'm a bloody assassin.'
I started sobbing, falling to my knees and I didn't have the force to get up. Peter was looking out of the window, ignoring me completely but James sat down by my side and squeezed my shoulder, a little too hard maybe.
'Let's just hope you didn't kill him Sirius, and that you're not a murderer, because otherwise, I will kill you.' James whispered, not maliciously, I could feel the pain and the sadness in his voice.
James and Peter went to the hospital wing while I walked towards McGonagall's office. I knocked on the door three times but no response was given. It was only six o'clock in the morning, she must had been sleeping. I heard some footsteps in the corridor but I didn't care who found out so I just leaned against the door and breathed out to calm myself.
'Ah, Mr. Black, just who I was hoping to find.' Dumbledore's cheerful voice came from behind me. I turned around and stared at him but he just smiled softly and beckoned me to follow him.
We went to his office and he immediately sat down behind his table. He made me sat down in front of him and offered me some biscuits but I politely declined, hoping that he didn't notice I had been crying.
'Well, I'm aware of what happened this past night.' He commented, like he was talking about the weather.
'Professor, I-I'm sorry, I wasn't…'
'Oh, I know, I know the story, Poppy has told me. Yet, I do not think you're telling the entire truth. Even though Mr. Lupin is your friend, you seem utterly horrified by what you've done. Is there something I should know about you relationship?'
'Remus and I are… We're together, as in boyfriends.' I explained with a blush spreading. Dumbledore smiled and grabbed one his sweets.
'Ah, I knew since I saw you with him your first day at Hogwarts. You two fit so well, Mr. Black, you will last.'
'But if he dies…'
'He won't, don't worry. He might be ill for a long time, but he won't die. By the way, Madame Pomfrey wants to take some blood samples from you, she said something about a venom.'
'Oh, yeah, I'll go see her.'
'Yeah, after we've talked you can go and of course, see your friend.'
'You will expel me, won't you? I mean, I'm not complaining, I deserve it.'
'Not today, Mr. Black, not today. You've done a bad thing, a very bad one, but you can see the wrongness in it and I've been talking with Professor McGonagall and we've both decided that Mr. Lupin will probably find the most suitable punishment for you.'
After that small talk I headed towards the hospital wing. A few kids were gathered around the door and when they saw me they immediately dispersed, like I was some kind of disease or plague. I glared at them and entered without knocking.
'Mr. Black.' Madame Pomfrey hissed, and made me come inside his laboratory. Without any more words she took a sample of my blood and withing minutes she had the results she wanted. 'Ah, so I was true, the vampire inserted the venom in you for you have no venom in your blood. You trespassed all the venom said vampire gave you to Remus.'
That made my chest hurt even more. I glanced at the bed that was farther from the door.
'He's still unconscious and no, you can't see him.'
'But Professor Dumbledore…'
'He doesn't know a thing about medics, so I will make this type of decisions. Mr. Potter and Mr. Pettigrew have been enough for him today.'
'But-'
'Mr. Black, don't push it. You will be able to see him tomorrow, maybe.'
I was pushed out of the infirmary and soon a crow gathered around me.
'So it's true? You killed your friend?'
'You heard? He killed Lupin, and I thought they were friends!'
'You can't trust vampires.'
'I knew he would kill someone eventually, I don't know why they let him continue studying here.'
Most of the awful people who commented about it were Slytherins, but it still hurt because it was the truth. I was a monster and I should had never returned to Hogwarts.
