Colby can hear Charlie's shaky voice as he approaches the van.
"That wasn't the first time I saw that truck. I think they followed me last time."
"What are you talking about? Why didn't you say anything?" Don asks, frowning.
"Because ... you were already so pissed off about my interview, so ... " Charlie suddenly looks like a four-year old who is scolded by his big brother.
Don's demeanor softens immediately, and his voice takes on a soothing tone. He leans down to his younger brother. "Aw, come on, Charlie ... Come on, you come to me ... come to me with anything!"
It is amazing how seamlessly Don shifts from a lead FBI agent to a protective big brother, and Charlie from a hardheaded math genius to a brainy little brother who seeks his brother's approval.
The thought brings a bitter smile to Colby's lips.
Don is the kind of man who makes you want his approval. He is different from the commanders he knew in his military days, but Colby has grown to respect this senior agent over the years. The first time the Dwayne fiasco happened, Colby had no choice as an undercover agent. He knew exactly what he was doing. What he didn't expect was how much it would hurt to lose Don's trust. David and Megan seemed more understanding and sympathetic, but he could tell Don didn't completely trust him anymore. He found himself wanting to get his trust back so badly.
It is funny considering the fact that Don was the one who believed him and took the risk to save him later on at the time when he was supposed to be a real traitor.
What is it about Don that makes him special? Sure, he is an excellent agent and an alpha male through and through, but he isn't really a mentor figure or a hero type. As his team member, Colby has seen him struggle to be a good leader, a good agent, and a good man. People tend to think he has a big ego. Maybe they are right, but as far as he knows, it is never bigger than his logical mind and his unique brand of modesty.
Colby thinks of Don as an honest, brave man. He is at times brutally honest to himself as well as to others, and still, he's strong enough to stay human. At first glance, he seems to be a reachable leader figure, but as you get to know him better, you begin to think that he might be a bigger man than you'll ever be ...
The bustle from the forensic team jolts him out of his musing. Colby scoffs at himself. This isn't the time, Granger. He takes the last step towards his boss. "Hey guys." He got this man's trust back, how tenuous it might be, and he is not going to lose it again.
