Everything was silent. It was morning. Maybe a month had passed, Sesshomaru wasn't quite sure. Since the birth of his son and daughter things had been in a blur and it still felt very unreal as it was. He knew things would change but he hadn't know how drastically it was going to be. He has yet to find a new routine to his new life. Still, things couldn't have gone more perfectly.
And every time he laid down to rest- something that he started to do for first time in his life- he would think of his father's words:
"Do you have someone to protect?"
Sesshomaru would close his eyes and meditate on it. He realized, not for the first time that he has someone to protect, that every day that he lives is another day of doing so. If he thought maybe two decades ago he would turn into such a thing he would surly faulted it to wild imagination. If someone were to tell him that he was going to be a father of half-breeds in a second that person would have perished. If he imagined such things for he knows nothing in this world is impossible and his father is a clear example of that he'd picture himself drunk, he picture that if he not kill them and have mercy he would make sure none of it would be known. Yet here he was one. Yet he couldn't deny that all of this happened because he was driven by desire for a human, maybe even hoped for it from the deepest undiscovered corners of his mind-he has still to understand himself completely that much is clear. And as a side thought he told himself to hate the very thing he finds he loves more in this moment: Akira and Asami.
Maybe that's why he wrote a letter to his mother.
He hadn't expected for her to reply, not that she would. So it was with great surprise that as he stepped out of the infirmary Jaken came gasping as ever to tell him that his mother was waiting for him in the gardens.
He told Jaken to make some tea and to arrange a table and chairs while he prepared. He didn't told Jaken that he can't remember the last time he bathe and that if he wanted to talk to his mother he should be as presentable as he could be. Surly for what he has planned to discuss with his mother he shouldn't smell like baby or less a half breed, for she'd be too disgusted to consider his words.
Sesshmaru didn't presume in wearing his armor, he hadn't in a long time that he was uncomfortable just thinking of the idea. He pondered in some fine print and headed out.
When Sesshomaru reached the gardens he saw that Jaken opted for a nice shade under a tree and some delicate treats. Then saw his mother. She was giving him her back, she was pouring herself tea.
He sighed before he walked to her.
He sat down. He waited.
His mother was concentrated in her tea, moving her spoon. When she was satisfied she took a sip and looked up to acknowledge him.
"Why have you called me here for, Sesshomaru?"
He furrowed his eyebrow.
Sesshomaru ignored the fact that she had not called him son. It surprised him that it bothered him as much as it did. It shocked him even more that he was so attached to his mother and now he came to realize it.
Sesshomaru pondered for a moment, gathering his thoughts before he answered. "Well, I…" he shook his head. "I thought, perhaps, you'd like to look at your grandchildren."
Sesshomaru's mother looked at him as if she had been stricken in the face. "Why would you ask such a thing?"
Why did he?
Surly this was a mistake. How could he forgotten that his mother was a heartless fiend? She never really took him seriously. She'd only been interested in finding his faults instead of his achievements. She annoyed him with things that did not concern him and irritated him more when it did. She was horrible and conniving.
Sesshomaru remembered himself just a couple of moments ago. Just how it hurt him that his mother had called him with his first name.
All mothers are devious, he supposed. It was not his fault his mother took it to an exaggeration.
Sesshomaru sighed, already knowing what he should do. He took another breath of encouragement before he said, "I understand, mother. I get why you'd be so reproachful towards me. I deserved such punishment and I apologize for being so disrespectful towards you. I'm sorry if I offended you." He tried to understand the look in her eyes but if he ever learn anything from her it was to mask his emotions. He almost smiled if it weren't for the fact that the circumstances dictated otherwise.
Sesshomaru looked at his hands. "You are right. You deserve men that treat you better. For that I'm sorry. I'll try my best to be better. I will treat my mother as she deserves to."
Sesshomaru's dared to ignore his fingers to watch her reaction. Her chin was raised high as if that somehow maintain her dignity. "I accept your apology." Then she sighed, her resolve disappearing completely. "I must be a fool for this but I guess everyone is a fool in their own terms."
Sesshomaru couldn't deny that he felt a little satisfied. "I am glad, mother."
Sesshomaru's mother took a sip of her tea. "I know you are, son."
Some minutes passed as they drank tea and ate some treats before she said. "Now I know you didn't just call me here to see my grandchildren, what is it that's bothering you?"
Sesshomaru guessed that all mothers are genetically engineered to have an uncanny intuition like that.
Rin wished she could get up, she wished she could take care of her children but instead she lost too much blood giving birth and she had to have a two month recovery especially ordered by Kagome. She couldn't move anywhere, she was stuck in bed all day. No matter how many times she beg or conspired with the servants she couldn't get out of bed even though she told Sesshomaru she was very capable of carrying her weigh to go places.
Not that she would argue for very long. Rin suspected that he just wanted to spend some quality time with their new son and daughter alone. It seems too out of character of him that she's afraid that if she rids him of them he will turn to his old ways. And even though she hadn't change their dippers or prepare them food or just walked carrying them around she's content.
In the end, after all the struggles and after all the pain, light will always find a way to break through the dark. And Rin learned that by bigger the torment much bigger the reward is going to be.
Maybe it was night, being closed off from the world in bed can confused the time space continuum- whatever that is. Around that tempo Lord Sesshomaru came to see her.
"Rin," he said quietly, figuring she had fallen asleep.
Suddenly she beamed, already forgetting that he was the one keeping her hostage in her room. "My Lord."
He came to her and sat at the edge of the bed. Immediately she knew something was off, since giving birth he had restricted himself from her and she could feel it. He was more focused on the things going around in his head and the children to put her any mind. So, this was strange. Rin didn't know if she should be nervous or worried.
"Rin I have something important to share with you," he said, looking at his shoes, not offering or adding any explanation.
Rin gathered his hands in a way of calling his attention. It worked. Instantaneously he looked her in the eyes. "What's wrong?"
"Mother was here this morning and all day to day."
"Really?" she knew that Sesshomaru and his mother's relationship was kind of like a path full of rocks and spiky branches but it did struck some curiosity that she was here.
"Yes," he said. "Actually we've been discussing something very important."
"Really," she said, smiling at the strange tone his voice enveloped in when he talked about his mother. "And what is that?"
Very slowly. "You."
Rin felt almost flattered. But then too quickly she felt discouraged, nervous, embarrassed. What horrible, terrible, shameful things could he have told his mother about her? It was no lie that she hated humans so why would he do such a tortuous thing to her? Then a thought hit her. "You talked about me… all day with your mother?"
Sesshomaru almost smiled and that made her stomach fall seven feet through the ground and rest with dear Kaede. It was no good sign when her Lord smiled. Nothing good could come out of them. Look where that got her. She felt warm, like there was boiling water in her stomach. She felt sick. Forget about answering. She already knew the answer.
Suddenly his face was serious and Rin grew more afraid, fires of curiosity extinguishing completely. She didn't like the way he change his emotions so radically. Her Lord is cool and collected and there was a reason for it too. She rather liked the old fellow better than this one.
"I love you, Rin."
Rin was very glad that she was in bed because she felt all of her strength being sucked out of her body by some unforeseen force. Yet she felt that if she could not reciprocate she will never truly express her feelings. "I- I love you t-too, My Lord." Abruptly she sighed. "I'm glad you said so."
Sesshomaru's captive eyes turned into a question mark. "Why do you say so?"
Rin bit her lip, concentrating on the words in her head, finding an order before she spoke them. "Well, I always thought I was just a- a…" what was the word she was looking for? "distraction. I felt that my love for you was only a flame that got you curious for and that you would further on extinguished before you got burned."
And there it was. The same mask from before. Rin couldn't decide where she was pleased to see it back or disappointed once she realized she didn't quite missed this demeanor like she thought she did. "Why would you say that?"
It seemed all his question revolved around things she'd say. But she knew that she could only be sincere to him. If she lied he'd know and she wasn't in the mood to be interrogated. If she was frank she was over her intrigue about his conversation with his mother. Now all she wanted was to see her children. What did she care about his family's affairs?
But then again those affairs had spent a whole day talking about her…
Rin felt irritated with her nagging nosiness.
"Well," Rin thought trying to gather her emotions for her to emit an explanation. Perhaps a few minutes went by. "I don't know, Lord Sesshomaru! I just thought you didn't really loved me. I'm just glad you do and you do our children as well. I'm just glad alright!"
Sesshomaru looked offended. But only slightly. "I understand. I haven't been the best person- in a way I've rejected you when I rejected our children. I just didn't understand the gravity of it all until I held it in my hands. That's why I am here now." He looked at her so intensely Rin felt nauseous. "I understood how important you are to me."
Rin felt foggy, like she was in a dream. How could she react to this?
"That's why I asked mother for advice."
"What?" Rin blurted, her bubble already popping. "Why would you ask your mother for advice?"
Sesshomaru seemed to take her in before he continued speaking. "I don't want this to go down in our history as an act of passion. Rather I'd like for it to be remembered as an entwinement. "
Rin's mind was going all sorts of directions. "What do you mean?"
"I love you, or at least I think I do. But I feel that I will not fully love you until our love is committed." Sesshomaru was now taking her in, her face, her body, her arms, her leg. Every part of her and if Rin cared to imagine she'd think everything that she's not too. "I will not let myself near you until there's some bound or promise between us. Mother agrees." He looked her in the eyes fiercely again. "And I do not trust myself not to touch you."
Rin catched her breath. "What?"
Sesshomaru sighed. "I want us to join in marriage."
The moon could have might as well exploded and Rin only knew this moment. She could live in this instant forever. She was in too much awe to pinch herself. She must be dreaming. She didn't even realize she took too long to answer.
"Well," Sesshomru said quietly. "I really hadn't prepared myself for this. I even had the dress tailor made for weeks-"
Rin pulled at his hand until he fell a top of her. She looked at him profoundly in the eyes answered with a yes and an of course before she pulled him in to her. It took him a moment before he kissed her back and like that they were tangled limps, trying to form a coherent thought.
That's the thing about coherent thoughts in the end while you reread them by segments you'll realize they don't make sense.
A/N: you like?
I know it's short and stupid but I didn't really feel like doing much! Thought about doing a second part or an afterthought about the weeding but I don't know
