Chapter Four: Guess What?

Four Months Later…

The last few months had been months of change. Caroline and Kate had decided to start the process of trying to get Kate pregnant. Caroline was nervous at first, even trying to slow everything down but then as the first month passed, she started to look forward to Kate being pregnant. Not because she wanted Kate to be happy, though that was a part of it. It was really because she was excited to be a mom again.

They had to choose a donor first, which took a while. Finally, they settled on a man with blonde hair, blue eyes who was of an average height and weight and was interested in chemistry and cooking. While Caroline didn't really care that the man's traits matched hers completely – the baby would never be biologically hers anyway – Kate found it very important. She hated that now that she'd finally found someone who she really wanted to have a child with, she couldn't make it with them. She was sure their baby would mimic Caroline and he or she would be a little like Caroline, but it would never be biological and it kind of bothered her. That is why she wanted the donor to be like Caroline as much as possible.

The day they went to get Kate inseminated was quite awkward. Not only was it way too sterile for Kate's liking – Caroline didn't mind so much – and was it also never fun to have a doctor between your legs – unless it was her very own Dr. Elliot - both of them were shocked that when the doctor left the room for about ten minutes he told Caroline that Kate would get pregnant much easier if she was aroused. Caroline's eyes grew big and she heard Kate's giggle, which made her huff in annoyance. Really, she'd have to have sex with Kate in this office? She hated that thought.

But she did it anyway, bringing Kate to the edge but not quite there until the doctor knocked to come back in. He didn't say anything but just smiled politely as Caroline discretely took a paper towel to clean her fingers.

They had to do this twice, because it didn't work the first time. It had made Kate cry when they found out she wasn't pregnant and therefore Caroline cried as well. They'd both hoped it would take from the first time and when it didn't, it really hurt but Caroline had said they'd try until they got a baby and five weeks after the insemination, when Kate's period still didn't come, she decided to take a pregnancy test.

"So… now, we just wait." Kate said as she leaned against the sink in which the three pregnancy tests lay. So what if she wanted to be as sure as possible…

"Yup…" Caroline said and saw Kate's hands grabbing the sink and squeezing before she relaxed her hands again and repeated the process. She was nervous. Caroline sighed and placed her hands on Kate's hips. "Hey, just relax. We'll both be disappointed if it turns out we're not having a baby but if it's so, we'll try again. Don't worry. You'll get pregnant." She promised with a crooked smile.

Kate's hands let go of the sink and she placed them on her girlfriend's shoulders. She smiled gratefully, feeling a little less nervous now and she kissed Caroline sweetly. "Thank you." She whispered and Caroline shrugged.

"It's nothing, really… So… four minutes have passed. They should be ready." Caroline told Kate.

The darker woman swallowed. "You should look." She said and Caroline frowned with a smile.

"What?"

"You should look and then tell me. Please?" Kate said, not offering an explanation.

Caroline shrugged. "Alright then." She said and moved away from Kate slightly before she took the three sticks and looked at them.

She looked up, her expression was blank. "What is it?" Kate asked, already fearing for the worst.

"I… I guess we're having a baby." Caroline said. "All three are positive." She told her girlfriend, her face now lighting up with a smile.

Kate took the sticks from Caroline and grinned as she saw them displaying two stripes each, which meant they were pregnant. "Oh my God…" She whispered before she looked up. "Oh my God!" She exclaimed static as she threw the sticks back into the sink and hugged her girlfriend tight, a face splitting smile on her face. Caroline felt happiness flood over her. She'd noticed that she'd wanted the baby more and more the last few weeks but now she was sure that this was the right thing to do for their relationship. She felt happier than she had in ages and she pulled back to kiss Kate deeply.

"We're having a baby." Caroline said, obviously in awe and Kate nodded with a big smile before their lips touched again. Caroline's hand slipped to Kate's stomach and stroked it gently. She pulled back from the kiss and smiled warmly at Kate.

Caroline couldn't believe it, really. She was so happy and excited. It was a quite foreign feeling for her. She was always so composed and when she was happy, she showed it by smiling a little but never a smile this big nor did she make her happiness be so obvious. Now, she didn't care though.

Caroline kissed Kate again and again, backing her out of the bathroom and into the bedroom. Kate pulled away from a second, giggling. "What are you doing?" She wondered as Caroline sat her down on the bed.

Caroline kissed Kate as she straddled her thighs. "Isn't that obvious?" She questioned. "Once our little one is here, we won't have as much time for this as we do now…" She explained as she kissed Kate's neck.

The first time her cellphone rang, Caroline was busy paying Kate back for the amazing orgasm she just got. Both of them chose to ignore the sound and quietly decided that they'd call back later.

It wasn't until it rung again that Caroline lifted her head and looked up to Kate from between her partner's legs. She wiped her mouth and lifted herself up, reaching for the cellphone. Kate groaned, annoyed and horny and started to place kisses on Caroline's neck and chest.

"H-Hello." Caroline greeted the caller.

"Caroline, its Gillian. I was wondering if you wanted to come 'round tonight. I have to write this speech for Celia and my dad's wedding and since you're better at it than…" Caroline was listening but let out a tiny moan when Kate's lips wrapped themselves around her nipple. "… I am," Gillian trailed off. "Am I interrupting something?" She questioned.

Caroline pushed Kate's head away and glared at her. "No, no, of-of course not. I'll… I'll come by tonight and help you." She explained. "I'll bring Kate. She's pretty good at speeches too." She explained and then she felt Kate kiss her chest again. "Look, I-I have to go. I'll see y-you tonight, okay?" She asked.

"Right, okay… See you tonight." Gillian said, and it was obvious that she was a little confused by how Caroline spoke and especially because she was sure she had heard two people breathing fast and hard. She was pretty sure that she had been interrupting something but as she pressed the red button her phone, she decided not to think about it anymore.

Caroline at the same time glared at Kate. "I was on the phone!" She exclaimed. "With my step-sister!" She added and Kate giggled.

"Just… shut up and make love to me. I've had to wait too long already." She said before she flipped Caroline on her back, kissing her fiercely, before Caroline flipped them over again, deciding that she was going to 'punish' Kate for her behavior by teasing her to no end. That would be fun.

Caroline was still laughing at something Kate told her when Gillian opened the door to reveal the happy couple. "Hey, you two. Come in." She said. Caroline and Kate entered the house and Caroline took off Kate's coat and then her own to hand it over to Gillian who had asked to take their coats.

"I'll go get the kettle on." She said and took off towards the kitchen while Kate and Caroline went to sit down on the couch, their hands interlaced.

"I hope that the doctor gives us good news tomorrow, I'm a bit worried." Kate said, seemingly out of nowhere.

Caroline smiled. "It'll be fine, sweetheart." She said and kissed her cheek.

Kate shrugged. "I hope so… Tell me, do you want a boy or a girl? I know we won't be able to find out for a while but I'm just curious." She wondered.

Caroline chuckled but couldn't answer because Gillian interrupted. "Boy or a girl? Is someone pregnant?" She asked, trying to be humorous.

Caroline and Kate shared a look. They weren't going to tell anyone until after the first trimester but… what now?

"Uhm…" Kate said, just to fill the awkward silence.

Gillian's eyes widened. "Are you two having a baby?" She asked and Caroline sighed. She couldn't lie now, could she?

"We just found out Kate is pregnant. We still have to go to a doctor to confirm everything but… yeah; we're most likely having a baby." Caroline said and Gillian smiled.

"Oh, I'm so happy for you guys. Congrats. I didn't even know you guys wanted a baby." She said as she sat down as well, handing them both a cup.

"We've been trying for a few months now." Caroline said with a smile as Kate mirrored her girlfriend's expression. "But could you maybe keep this to yourself? We'd like to get past the first trimester before we tell anyone. The risks are pretty high for a miscarriage, due to Kate's slightly older age – and it's even harder to deal with that if everyone knows." She told Gillian who nodded in understanding.

"Of course, no problem." Gillian promised.

"Our baby will be fine though." Kate told Caroline more than Gillian.

Caroline squeezed Kate's hand. "Of course, love." She told her.
