Chapter Eleven
Dean woke the next morning and Sam was still in bed, completely submerged underneath the blanket. Dean sighed, getting up and going to the shower. When Dean returned, he was greeted with a larger Sam Well, only by a bit. To anyone else he would look the same, but to the person who had practically raised him, Sam was obviously fourteen.
"Yes." Dean grinned. He was getting closer to twenty-two. Sam stirred in sleep until he sat up in bed, awake.
"Dean?" Sam asked groggily.
"Yeah?" Dean prepared for whatever question was about to be asked.
"Are you still mad at me?" Sam looked like a kicked puppy. Dean felt guilty.
"I wasn't mad at you, Sammy. I was mad at what you did. And, no, I'm not mad anymore," Dean explained.
"You acted like dad when you yelled at me," Sam whispered. Their father's death was still fresh and Sam knew this. The eldest Winchester sighed.
"I'm sorry about that, Sammy. I really didn't mean to yell at you, but you had me so scared," Dean said. "I thought the alp had come and I thought I was going to lose you this time."
"Yeah, I guess it was a pretty stupid and childish thing to do," Sam said.
"Well, it was, but I've been expecting you to kind of revert back to little Sam occasionally," Dean said. "Actually, you've been pretty good about not turning into little Sam since you were a toddler."
"I guess." Sam shrugged. He was looking down at his lap, refusing to stare into Dean's emerald eyes, fearing the disappointment he might see. Though he was in the body of a fourteen year old, he had the mind of a twenty-two year old.
"Hey," Dean said, snapping up Sam's attention. "You're not bad. You're okay, got it?"
"Got it," Sam said, a small smile appearing on his lips. He was reminded of all the times Dean used to comfort him when he was younger, and it made him feel happier. Those were happier times. Even though they were hunting all the time and their mom wasn't alive, they were happier times for Sam. He had his dad and Dean, and that's all he ever needed.
"Now, let's head to the library or something," Dean said. "I can't handle any more water scares right now."
"Sure," Sam said. He grabbed his laptop bag that was conveniently laid out on the table of the motel room and they headed out.
When Sam and Dean returned, Sam went straight to bed. They had spent the entire day at the library trying to either find a cure or find a hunt. Sure, hunting wasn't fit for kids, but Dean figured Sam was old enough now that he could hold down the fort of the motel long enough for Dean to finish a salt and burn.
Dean stayed up longer. It seemed as though ever since Sam had transitioned in age he still seemed to need sleep much more than an adult. Dean thought it was funny, but it worried hi as well. He hit the books while the kid slept.
Soon enough, it was Dean's turn to fall asleep. He went to bed and hoped Sam would age up again the next morning.
When Dean woke, he immediately noticed it was not the next morning. He looked over to the next bed and saw that Sam was shaking. He was tossing and turning, and it wasn't good.
"Sam?!" Dean practically shouted – not caring if he woke Sam at this point, because wasn't that the point? – and rushed over to shake the kid. "Sam!" he shouted again.
Sam continued to shake and squirm. He was having a night terror. That meant the alp was close.
"Dammit!" Dean exclaimed, searching through the room to grab their possessions and jamming them in a couple duffle bags. "How the hell did this thing find us?!"
He finished packing and warded the room, throwing their things in the trunk of the impala. Dean turned back, grabbing Sam in his arms and putting the shaking sweaty boy in the car and driving off. He didn't bother to pay off the motel room and he didn't care. He had filed under a fake name – as always – anyway.
As soon as Dean was on the road, he grabbed his phone and made a call to Bobby. They couldn't stay away from friends and family anymore. They needed to be around someone.
"Hello?" Bobby answered.
"We have a problem," Dean said.
"That's what I'm here for, boy," Bobby responded. "What's the problem?"
"Sam's having another night terror," Dean answered. "I think the alp is after us again."
"We'll take care of it," Bobby said. "You're on your way here, right?"
"Of course, you're the first person I'd think of in the situation," Dean said. "I mean, we got Ellen, but this isn't the time for here. I need a man." Dean didn't want to say that he needed a father figure to give him the comfort he needed. Bobby knew this already.
"Well, hurry on over here and we'll figure this out," Bobby said. "I've actually got some interesting news for you when you get here too."
"What?" Dean asked. "Did you find a quicker cure or something?"
"You'll find out when you get here," Bobby said.
"Just tell me no-" Dean paused when he heard his phone beep. He looked at the screen and saw Ellen's name pop up. "I gotta go, Ellen's calling me."
"Hurry on over here," Bobby said before hanging up.
Dean then answered Ellen's call. "Hello?"
"There something wrong with your hands?" Ellen asked. Dean looked down at his hands before looking back up to drive.
"No, I don't think so, why?" he asked.
"Because you haven't called me at all since you've left," Ellen said. "If I was wherever you are, I'd smack you upside the head, boy."
"Sorry, I've been a little preoccupied with a freaking toddler," Dean snapped.
"Did Sam regress further?" Ellen asked.
"Well…" Dean trailed off. "He did, but then he started aging up again and now I'm worried."
"Well, keep me posted next time," Ellen said. "And don't think you can just talk to me like that on the regular."
"I got it, but I gotta go," Dean said. "Sam's having a night terror and I'm on my way to Bobby's to take care of him there.
"Well, keep me on speed dial, kid," Ellen said before hanging up. Dean sighed and threw his phone onto the dashboard, looking into the rear-view mirror to see Sam was still squirming and making soft whimper sounds.
"I'm gonna get you help, Sammy," Dean said, mostly to himself. "I'm gonna get help.."
