This is chapter 16, the final chapter of this fanfic. For almost 3 and a half years I have been writing this story and now it's coming to an end. I love Monsters Inc and its wonderful characters and that love is what helped me create Be My Pal. Pixar never fails to make good films and MI was one of those films I never stop watching. I may do some more Monsters stuff in the near future but as for right now, I'm moving on to other fandoms and spread my love all over them. For those who don't know, it's in my profile under BIG ANNOUNCEMENT and it will explain everything.
So the people who kept reviewing this fanfic thank you, I'm so grateful to have people who keep telling to keep gong and I'm happy that it inspired some. Thank you guys, I love you so much. Now I can go back and edit all my mistake and it will be finally complete.
So let's get on to the last chapter. There won't be any notes at the bottom so if you see any mistakes let me know and I'll fix it.
Disclaimer: Monsters Inc and Monsters University belongs to Pete Doctor and Dan Scanlon, thank you guys for making these films and we hope both of you will move forward to a third film someday with the return of Randall. And good luck Pete with your new film 'Inside Out', I will be looking forward to seeing it this summer.
Two months later…
"And then we jumped and surprised the bad guys! Everyone charged right at them, we outnumbered them."
"What happened next Mr. Wazowski?" asked a little fluffy monster.
"Well, I went to help my friends and together we save the day!" Mike proudly cried out.
All of the little monsters cheered for him. Mike was touring for the monsters kids who came to Monsters Inc for a field trip. He was having a great with it, he even told them the story of the crazy events from two months ago.
What Mike didn't know was someone was sneaking behind them. The creature was invisible but as he made himself appear, the children silently gasped yet amazed at the same time. Mike noticed their looks, thinking it was Sulley he turned around only to see something else.
"WAZOWSKI!"
"Wahhh!"
Startled Mike falls on his back, the children laughing at him. The green eyeball looked up to glare at his lizard friend. Randall just laughed at him.
"I can't believe you still fell for that, this is just priceless" snickered Randall.
"You didn't scare me" Mike lied, "I uh…I trip on my own feet. This floor is very slippery."
"Uh-huh sure."
Mike got up back up, "All right kids now was I talking about?"
"You were telling us how you save Monsters Inc!" a pink monster cried.
Randall gave him a specious look, "Wait, you save Monsters Inc?"
Mike started to sweat nervously, "What? I don't know what they're talking about. I never said that."
"Yes you did," said a monster with many eyes.
Mike then smiled sheepishly and sees Randall smiled a knowing smirk.
"Yep, that's the Mike I know."
"C'mon guys break it up," Sulley said teasingly as he entered the Laugh Floor with Celia and Fungus.
"Aw we were just playing around Sulley," said Randall glancing at him.
The polka-dot monster chuckled, "All right but we gotta go and see Boo remember."
A few days ago was Boo's birthday. She was now a five-year-old little girl. The monsters weren't able to see her because her party was on the weekday, but now it was Friday and they could see her now. Celia was carrying a small bag full of colorful presents.
"Oh I almost forgot," said Mike, "But I can't leave these kids here."
"I can take over for you Mike" Fungus said raising his hand.
Fungus goes to the children and tells them that he will show them the next room which is the canister room, they got excited and followed him.
"See you later Randall."
"See ya Fungus" Randall called out.
The four monsters take a go-cart and drive down to the hallways and to the simulator room. For two months they have put things back in order. Their story was all over the headline news after the arrest of Waternoose and Fangs, no one couldn't stop talking about it. Some of the monsters at the college reunion told their own point of view of what happened and mentioned seeing a human, which made everyone felt nervous. The CDA however, explained that the child is safe from the criminals who took her and she is no longer a threat. The monsters were surprised by this, questioning if humans were dangerous, to begin with.
Randall and others didn't care much of what they think of Boo. They were just happy that they could see her again and any time on the weekend only. They walked in the simulator room and activate Boo's door. Sulley slowly and quietly turned knob not wanting to scare the parents. They were not in the room, but he could see Boo sitting near the window. He turned to his friends and signal them to jump out at the count of three.
"SURPRISE!" they cried.
Boo turned around startled but smiled to see who it was, "Hi guys!"
"Hey birthday girl," said Sulley ruffling the girl's hair.
Boo giggled, "my birthday was three days ago."
"Yeah we know, we're sorry we missed it kiddo," Mike said, "But we got gifts to make it up."
"Aw, you didn't have to do that" Boo said.
"Oh sweetie you're too sweet," said Celia hugging Boo.
"Was it a good birthday?" Randall asked.
"Yeah, it was just me and family. And I got this as a present."
Boo goes over to her bed and picked up a pink and purple backpack. The bag was already covered in stickers of cats, dogs, and hearts.
"A backpack?" asked a confused Mike.
"Yup! My mom said next week I'm going to start school" said Boo.
The monsters were very proud of her, they sat down on the floor and listened to Boo. For a few minutes, she went on talking about the school she going to and how she going to miss Lisa watching her every day. Lisa said that she would still babysit Boo if her parents have to go into an emergency for work or stay for late hours. Finally, it was time to open Boo's birthday presents.
Mike's present was first and Boo couldn't wait to open it.
As she took the box out of the bag and ripped off the paper she gasped, "Aww, this is so cute! What is it?"
"It's a stuffed monster called ugly monsters," said Mike, "There were so many of them and I didn't which one you may like. The was a fluffy one and a blue one with wings and a striped one with claws and-"
Mike grunted from the unexpected hug but he hugged the little girl back.
"I love it, Mike. Thank you."
Then it was Celia's turn, it was a small box with no wrapping. Boo opened it and found small bottles of nail polish.
"Wow, my own nail polish!" Boo cried with joy.
"It's the rainbow edition so it has all of your favorite colors," said Celia, "Now your hands can look pretty."
"Thanks, Celia," said Boo hugging her and letting Celia's snakes give her kisses and then they squeak a happy squeak to her.
Then Sulley pulled something big out of the bag and handed over to Boo.
"Here you go Boo."
It was a helmet. A Monsters Inc helmet but it was a smaller version, painted pink and covered in small flowers. The five-year-old girl was astounding.
"Kitty this is so awesome!" she jumped on the polka-dotted monster's leg. Sulley laughed and picked her up giving her a bear hug. After putting her down she goes over to Randall, beaming at him.
"So what kind of present did you get me, Randy?"
"Well, I can't really tell you what is yet" Randall answered.
"C'mon tell me" Boo pleated.
"Nope."
"Please?"
"Nah-ah"
"Randy" Boo cross her arms, pretending to be grumpy at him.
The lizard just shook his head and chuckled at her, "Okay I'm teasing you. But before I give it to you, you have to close your eyes first."
Boo cover her eyes with both hands, but Randall said he needs her arm sticking out. The girl sticks out her right arm while she closed her right eye and covers her left with her hand. Randall rolled his eyes by her goofiness and took out her present. She felt something around her wrist.
"Okay, open them," said Randall.
Boo opened her eyes and gasped a soft gasp. Around her wrist was a silver bracelet, with little charms. The charms were little pink and blue cupcakes. She twists her arm around, left and right hearing the jingle of the charms.
"Randy…it's beautiful," she said.
Randall rubbed the back of his neck, "I saw it and…it reminded me of you. I hope you like it."
"I love it! I love it! Thank you so much!" Boo cried jumping and hopped to give Randall a hug.
"Oof!" Randall was at least getting used to these surprise hugs and he places his four arms on the little girl's back, "your welcome Mary."
"Hey you could wear that on your first day of school," said Mike.
Boo blinked and looked at her charm bracelet, "Yeah…that would be cool, I guess."
Randall noticed her frown and her voice hesitated, "What's wrong Mary?"
"Nothing, it's nothing," Boo said.
"You can tell us Boo," said Sulley, patting the girl on the back.
Boo looked up at her monster friends with her eyebrows raising in concern, she sighed. She walked over to her bed, staring at her empty backpack.
"It just…I'm kinda nervous about school. I'm gonna be by myself and no one will be there to help me."
"Oh, sweetie" Celia came over to Boo, "there's nothing to be afraid about school."
"She's right. School is really easy, just don't let anyone fire breathe you behind your back" said Mike.
Boo giggled, "no one can breathe fire."
"Boo, starting in the first grade isn't so bad" Sulley explained, "school will get tough later on but the first years are the best years."
"Really?"
"Would I ever lie to you?" Sulley said ruffling Boo's hair.
"So it would be okay then?" she asked.
"Yeah, just be yourself and have fun. We all had our fun times when we started school. Right guys?" Sulley asked his friends.
The three monsters agreed.
"And if someone gives you a hard time and bullies you, you punch them in the face," Randall said showing his fist to Boo.
"Randall!"
"What?"
"Don't tell her to punch people in the face" Sulley complained.
"Hey how else she supposed to defend herself?" Randall argued back.
"I could just tell the teacher about it instead," Boo said.
"Good Boo that's better," Sulley said proudly.
"Thanks, guys. I feel a little better and thanks for the present."
The four monsters and the little girl went on to talk about other topics. Randall's progress of being a comedian was going well and Mike was teaching him some fun tricks. He mentioned that he will be on the Laugh Floor soon this week. Mike was having great fun spending time teaching Randall and two old friends were finally catching up on things. The lizard even bought himself a pair of contacts and new glasses for his eyes to see better. Now he didn't need to squint his eyes anymore.
Speaking of old friends, the Oozma Kappa brothers were doing okay too. Art and the Perry twins planned to transfer themselves to Sulley's company as new comedians and it was so the friends would stay close together. Squishy was still staying at the shop to help Don and Cherri. It was renamed to the 'Don and Son computer department'. Squishy never felt so happy before in his life that Don named the shop after both of them.
"We're planning on seeing them tomorrow, it's football season!" said Mike.
"And you don't have to wear a monster costume anymore, so can come with us to see them," said Sulley.
"Thanks, Kitty but I can't go this time," Boo said sadly.
"Huh, why not?" asked Mike.
"Mom and Dad are staying this weekend all day and I gotta do school stuff. Like buying paper, folders, pencils, books, and other stuff."
"Aw man, that sounds boring. Sorry, Boo" Mike frowned.
"It's okay Mike. You guys go have fun with them, I'll be fine."
"Well, at least you're spending time with your parents," said Sulley.
There a loud beep in the room, it was coming from Celia's watch. She looks at the time and turned to Sulley.
"Sulley we have to go to the last meeting is in five minutes." She said.
"All right let's go" Sulley goes to Boo and hugs her, "I'll see you later kiddo, happy birthday."
"See ya Boo," said Mike and Celia walking off together, holding hands.
Randall was about to say his good-bye too but Boo wanted him to say and asked him something.
"You guys go I'll catch up," he said, watching Sulley, Mike and Celia go out of the door.
Now that they are gone he looked down to Boo with his fronds up and a curious look.
"Did you really mean that stuff about punching a bully?" she asked.
Randall frond lowered and he sighed. He crouched down to the girl's level and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"When I was little like about your age, I was bullied a lot because I wore glasses" Randall explained. He never understood why kids did that to him, calling him names and taking his stuff, it was horrible for him.
"I was called a nerd or dumb lizard a lot on the playground."
"That's terrible," Boo said looking at him with wide eyes and felt guilty that she called him one of those awful names.
"It was, but I don't want you to think that's going to happen to you too. I want you to have a good time learning at school but I don't want you to let people pick on you. Do what you can to defend yourself, Mary, okay?"
Boo understood what he was trying to tell her. He was looking out for her. Then she remembered something important.
"Oh wait, I made you something."
"You did?" Randall asked acting all surprised, "What cha' made?"
Boo went over to her small table and grabbed a piece of paper, she runs back to Randall and gave the paper to him. Randall looked at it and realized it was a drawing of him and her together, with hearts, stars, and flowers around them. Under the drawing was a small sentence that read: 'Best Pals Forever!' He smiled and glanced at Boo.
"This is nice Mary."
"I wanted to make it perfect for you," said Boo, "It's a thank you present for saving me from Waternoose."
"I'll hang it on my refrigerator," said Randall chuckling. A sudden flashback came to him, seeing Boo in his arms, not moving at all. He felt his eyes going watery. He started at the drawing again and back to her, looking right into her innocent eyes. Without warning, Randall then scoops up Boo hugging her tightly like she would disappear any minute. It caught her by surprise and Boo didn't understand what was going on.
"Before I go, Mary, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for everything you've done for me" he said almost emotionally.
"What did I do?" said a puzzled Boo who wrapped her arms on the lizard's back.
Randall laughed heartily, "You changed me. I'm now comfortable to be myself again, and it's all because of you. Thank you…for being my friend."
The five-year-old smiled, "No Randall, thank you."
"For what?"
"For letting me be your friend."
Randall let himself cry a little bit, he put down the girl and showed a smirk to let her know that he was grateful. Boo wiped his tears away with her little hands and stand on her tippy-toes so she could give him a kiss on the face, right where his scar was. This causes Randall to change colors again.
"Haha, you're pink again" Boo giggled.
Randall changed back to purple and narrowed his eyes at her, "Okay I let you get away with this just once, but don't do that again."
"Deal," said Boo smiling her goofy smile that he knows and loves. She watches him leave and she waved a farewell to her monster friend. Randall did the same as he closed her closet door, in his hand was her drawing that he will keep forever.
"Good-bye Randy."
"Good-bye Mary."
The next few days Monday came along.
Snowy run-up to Boo's to wake up by licking her face. Boo laughed and got out of bed to get herself ready for the first day of school. She brushed her teeth, put on a new outfit her mom bought her, grabbed her backpack, and head downstairs with Snowy.
"Whoa, slow down Mary," said her father, "the bus is not here yet."
"When will it come?" she asked.
"Soon dear, but you have to have some food in your tummy," said Boo's mom who was putting her cereal bowl on the table.
Boo goes to the table and has her cereal and orange juice.
"My big baby is going to school, are you excited?" asked her father.
"Yes!" Boo said with a mouth full of cereal.
He laughed and patted her head, "That's my girl!"
By the next ten minutes, Boo helped her mom getting her lunch ready and watch her father getting his suit ready for work. She sat on the chair with her bag and lunch waiting for her ride. Then Snowy started barking at the window. Boo goes over to see what was outside, it was a yellow school bus.
Boo started to feel nervous again as she goes outside with her parents. The only sound she could hear was the loud engine of the bus and her dog. Snowy had to stay inside since he wouldn't stop barking at the bus. Her mom and dad both bend down to see her face.
"All right sweetie, this is it," said her mother, "Now don't be scared, and make some new friends okay?"
"Okay."
"And make sure you eat all your lunch," said her father.
Boo nodded, "If I get homework on the first day, will you help me with it?"
Her mother chuckled, "Of course honey. Tell us everything when you come home."
"Thanks, mommy, thanks daddy" Boo hugged her parents once more time before she left.
She walked up to the door, taking a deep breath and letting it all out. The bus driver opened the door for her letting her in. Boo took hold of the railing and climbed up. When she got up inside the bus she looks around, there other kids on the bus, some were looking at her and some weren't. Grabbing on to the sleeves of her backpack tightly, Boo goes to find a seat for herself. She sat down to an empty seat on the right, where a window showed her house and her parents. They were waving at her and she waved back.
The bus then started to drive away, Boo stopped waving to her parents when she couldn't see them anymore. She looked down at her feet rocking them back and forth. She wanted to look at the other kids but she was too shy, she instead looked at the cupcake bracelet that Randall gave her. Hearing the small ching sound made her relaxed. She remembered her friend's words, don't worry about it, just be yourself, and have fun.
"That's a nice bracelet."
Boo turned to see another girl sitting across from her. She was a little taller than Boo, she had blond hair in ponytails with green eyes and a pair of glasses.
"Thank you," Boo said to the kind girl.
"Can I sit by you?" the girl asked.
"Sure."
The girl quickly made her way to Boo's seat, not wanting to trip from the rumbling driving of the bus. She sat down next to her and smiled bashfully.
"I'm Allison by the way."
"Hi, I'm Mary. Today is my first day of school."
"Me too!"
"Really?"
"Yeah, but I'm still a little scared. What if the other kids, you know…don't like me."
Boo could tell she was scared just like she was but she thought of some words to help Allison cheer up a bit.
"I like you," said Boo, " and you can hang out with me if you want to."
"Oh, thanks Mary that means a lot to me" cheered Allison.
Boo just couldn't stop smiling, she just wanted to jump up in delight right on the bus. Already she had made a new friend and they haven't made it to school yet. She couldn't wait to tell her parents and her monster friends.
Throughout most of the ride, Boo looked out at the window with a confident grin, watching the trees, homes, and the world go by. She couldn't wait to see what the rest of the day would be like. As her brown eyes watch everything from her window, she starts to tap her fingers on her lap and hums her favorite tune to herself.
I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have you
Wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have…you
