"Why are you humming my national anthem?"

Alfred and Arthur were in Alfred's living room, relaxing and enjoying their time together before it was time for them to leave. The longtime lovers were in New York for some meetings with France in the city and Alfred was kind enough to offer – or rather, demand – that his boyfriend stay in his home for the visit. It was Arthur who had just asked the question.

Alfred stopped humming to laugh and say, "Dude, what are talking about? I was humming one of my songs! Y'know, 'My Country, 'Tis of Thee'?"

"Ah, right. The one your people based off of God Saved the Queen," Arthur remarked with a roll of the eyes.

"Hey!" Alfred replied defensively sitting up from his reclining position on the couch. "I have plenty of other songs that are totally original!"

The Brit scoffed. "Name them."

"Well, let's see… There's my national anthem, of course: the good ol' Star Spangled Banner!" he announced proudly. "Then there's 'This Land is Your Land' and 'God Bless the USA' and 'America the Beautifu-'"

"Ah, I believe I'm familiar with that one," Arthur cut in smoothly. He cleared his throat. "May I?"

Alfred blinked, his glasses falling further down his nose. "You're gonna sing it?" At Arthur's nod, he shrugged and, pushing his glasses back up, told him, "Go for it, dude."

Arthur opened his mouth and began to sing, his smooth voice holding just a hint of something Alfred couldn't quite detect. "O beautiful for spacious arms, for amber locks of hair…"

"Hey, that's not-"

"For sky blue eyes that glint with charm, a laugh that fills the air!"

"Arthur, what are you doing?" Alfred asked suspiciously as Arthur slipped down from his spot on the sofa to kneel in front of the American.

"America! America! I get down on one knee…"

All color drained from Alfred's face.

"And plead thy hand upon this land…"

Here, he paused to smile at Alfred, who was now listening with a sort of rapt focus. There was excitement gleaming in those gorgeous blue eyes that Arthur had just sung about and he looked as though he would burst with pure emotion at any moment. Arthur decided to finally put him out of his misery to sing the final line:

"So will you marry me?"

The lyrics was accompanied by a small box that Arthur pulled out of his pocket and opened to reveal a shining band. He held out the ring to Alfred, waiting.

"Of course I will!" Alfred exclaimed, tears welling up in his eyes as he yanked Arthur up from the floor and embraced him tightly. Arthur let out a small laugh and wrapped his arms around Alfred, murmuring ecstatic romantic things in his fiancée's ear.

They lingered in each other's arms for several long minutes at the end of which Arthur pulled back just enough to cup Alfred's cheek and ask, "Did you like that, love?"

Alfred nodded, his radiant smile only half as bright as his oceanic eyes. "I loved it, Arthur! It was amazing. When did you come up with that?"

"A while back," Arthur replied, proceeding to explain to Alfred how he had come up to the lyrics one day after stumbling upon a site that was quite patriotic to the United States. "The words just came easily to me because I was thinking of you. In my mind, America the Beautiful translated to Alfred my beautiful."

A happy flush crossed Alfred's face and he crushed the Brit to his chest. "I love you, Arthur."

"I love you, too, Alfred, my beautiful."
