Chapter 5
ALLY'S POV
(A/N) Sorry for late update. I was having a lot of trouble with this chapter, and I still think that it's one of the bad ones. But enjoy!
We were back at the station, and Austin was staring at the security camera footage. Not even bothering to get up or take a break. Just sitting. Staring. I swear I saw him wince every time the men pointed the gun at Dez's head. This had to stop; he could not keep torturing himself.
I walked up to him, if anything I could distract him for a few minutes. "Hey, Austin. How's it going?"
He didn't look up. "Peachy, Ally. Just peachy."
"You should take a break, Austin. I hate to say it but staring at the camera footage will not bring Dez back."
This time he looked up. His eyes filled with hatred. "If you hate it so much, then why did you say it?"
I was taken aback. "Look, you're not the only one who misses Dez. I do. Trish does. You have no right to act like you're the only one in the world who cares about Dez."
He snorted. Damn him.
"I heard that."
Damn me. I had a good retort ready, but something caught my eye. The main guy. The fat, pudgy one. He wasn't showing up ok camera. Did he already know that it was there? I mean, he couldn't have just avoided it completely during the robbery without knowing it was there. That meant he had to have been in the store before, which means that Lily had seen him. She had lied.
I must have been a sight to see, eyebrows scrunched together in concentration, mouth hanging open waiting for the retort that I had given up on, my index finger limp but pointing to the screen. Austin shook me, "Alls, you okay?"
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine." Should I tell him what I saw? If I did, he would probably go down there right now. He would be crazy, and that could definitely not happen. I decided to pretend nothing had happened. "I was just lost in thought, I guess."
He was confused. "Are you sure? You looked like you figured something out. What was it?"
"Oh, nothing." I shrugged. " I just realized I forgot to run the dishwasher at home. I was trying to figure out if I should go right now and run it or just have takeout." I gave an uneasy smile. Hopefully Austin couldn't see through my lie.
He was completely baffled now. "Are you sure? It would help a lot if you learned something new. I would quit blaming myself so much."
Playing the guilty card, eh? Not going to work, Austypoo. Austypoo? Sometimes I surprised myself. "No, sorry. I wish I did."
I had never lied to him, so he backed off. I resisted the urge to sigh with relief. "I'm going to head out. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Alright, 'night Ally."
"'Night, Austin." I practically ran out of there. I hopped in my car, and drove to the address written on the case file for Lily.
AUSTIN'S POV
Ally had just lied to me. For the first time. Ever. I had just been lied to by Ally. I thought about this as I followed Ally's car.
She pulled up at Lily's house; I knew she wasn't going home. I can't believe she lied to me.
She got out of the car and glanced around. I ducked my head so she wouldn't see me. I kept it under for about ten minutes, thinking that was enough time. When I brought my head up, she was looking directly at me. She was furious. Ally hastily walked towards my car. "YOU FOLLOWED ME! JESUS, AUSTIN! THIS ISN'T A JAMES BOND MOVIE!"
"Calm down, Ally. People are sleeping. And if you hadn't lied to me, I wouldn't have had to follow you."
"DON'T YOU TELL ME TO 'CALM DOWN'!" She put air quotes around "calm down". "I LIED FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!"
My voice got louder to match hers. "FOR MY OWN GOOD? WHAT'S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?"
"I DON'T HAVE TO EXPLAIN MYSELF TO YOU! YOU SHOULD KNOW ENOUGH NOT TO FOLLOW ME!"
"YOU LIED TO ME! IT WASN'T THE OTHER WAY AROUND! YOU CAN'T BE MAD AT ME!" As soon as I said it, I knew it was the wrong move. I gulped and mentally prepared myself for the ensuing chaos.
"I DON'T HAVE ANY RIGHT TO BE MAD AT YOU? REALLY, AUSTIN? HOW ABOUT THE WAY YOU'VE BEEN ACTING? LIKE SOME KIND OF ZOMBIE? I WANT TO YELL AT YOU TO GET OVER IT, BUT THAT'S MEAN, AND I AM NOT A MEAN PERSON! I KNOW YOU BLAME ME FOR OUR BREAK-UP, BUT DID YOU EVER STOP TO WONDER THAT IT MIGHT BE YOUR FAULT? HUH? I GAVE OUR RELATIONSHIP EVERYTHING I HAD, BUT YOU? YOU HALF-ASSED EVERYTHING! I-" her voice cracked, and she continued in a lower voice, fighting tears. "I thought it was me. That maybe I wasn't good enough for you." The tears that she was fighting fell from her eyes, and she gave up trying to speak so she could wipe them away.
I never knew she felt that way. "Alls, come here." I tried to pull her into a hug, but she pushed me away and gave me a reproachful glance. I sighed, "Ally, I was scared. I didn't want to mess it up. I love you; I do. But you're also my best friend, and if our relationship didn't work out, I wanted us to still be friends. I couldn't lose you completely."
She was silent for a moment, but then she opened her mouth to say something. "I love you too, Austin." This time she let me pull her into a hug, and we sat there for a few minutes. Happily.
After we let go, she said, "Wow, Austin. I didn't realize it was so late; I'm going to go home for real this time. I'll tell you what I figured out tomorrow morning."
"Fine. Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
(A/N) I know that I played a little bit with an Auslly romance in Look-Alike, so I just wanted to give you guys what happened between the two. Don't worry though; there will be more Auslly in the future. Thanks for reading!
