Kate stood before the desk, her shadow falling over the scattering of paper, pens, and the open laptop, calling his attention in quiet fashion. She waited patiently, arms crossed, as he slowly closed his computer and looked up, his face trying hard to remain innocent despite his attention falling to the pages in her hands. Placing the document on top of the laptop, she placed a single finger on the corresponding paragraph and raised an eyebrow. Castle eyed the words and swallowed hard, trying to put on a nonchalant grin as he lifted his attention to her.
"Too graphic," he ventured, his voice a mix of tells as he cleared his throat. She raised her brow higher and continued to press down on the page, creating a rather deep impression. He flicked his gaze to the deep dimple and gave a slightly fearful chuckle before clearing his throat for a second time and turning his attention to a point over her shoulder.
"Really?" she pressed, never once lifting her pointer finger. He shifted in his chair and continued to avoid her eyes, turning instead to a suddenly fascinating pen on his desk. She leaned in, both palms flat on the woodwork. Castle continued to shift uncomfortably, his gaze drifting every so often in her direction before darting away again. She remained motionless, determined to gain an answer against the quiet refusal.
Determination won. Castle dropped back against the back of his chair, his features the picture of pouty child. "I may have a bit of a grudge."
"A bit? Rick, you turned them into losers and murdered them violently with your mind," Kate began, gesturing towards the manuscript chapter with an open hand. She glared at his quick triumphant grin, cutting the upturning corners short. "I'm not sure if I should be flattered or mortified," she added, standing straight once more, re-crossing her arms and raising a brow.
He cast a glance up towards her and sat up straighter himself, taking in a deep, noticeable breath as he fidgeted with the papers. "Can you blame me?" he started simply, keeping his gaze focused on the words he had written. "They didn't deserve you, Kate. They didn't take your feelings into consideration or your wants and needs. They never fully tried to make you happy. So for that, I made sure in the world of words they got their just punishment. Besides, I'm a guy; I'm never going to exactly want to play nice with your exes."
Kate shook her head, the tendrils of an amused grin winning out over her scowl. She dropped her arms and crossed around to his side of the desk. He continued to stare ahead, the pouty boy look still plastered on his face as he rolled the pen across the smooth surface. She leaned down to kiss his cheek. "I suppose that's sweet in its own twisted sort of way," she said, propping herself up on the edge of the desk, hands resting flat on either side.
She watched his smile return and felt her own widen. He pulled himself into a better position and opened his laptop, resting a hand momentarily on her thigh as he gave her a smug satisfied grin. She shook her head a second time and rolled her eyes as he returned to his writing, every so often pausing to find her hand with his and press delicate kisses to her knuckles or play gently with her fingers until his work lay completely forgotten. He tugged her into his lap and wrapped his arms around her, feathering kisses onto her skin. She snuggled close and closed her eyes, ever grateful for the man holding her, despite his evident need to bash her exes in his books.
A/N- So for those of you who may have read it, yep, this was inspired by those scenes from Storm Front. I sort of figured, Kate would not have taken them positively on the first reading. Again, thank you to my beta, Dmarx and thank you to my readers :)
Until, next time :)
