Deaths of the Original Order
Charlus (58) and Dorea (55) Potter: Charlus was Head Auror at the Ministry of Magic. When the war began, he did his very best to keep things together, but because of corrupted superiors and personal attacks, there was little he could do. He, the Brothers Dumbledore, and Mad-Eye Moody began working together to get something more effective put together. In the meantime, Dorea began to invite persecuted individuals to their home—no Muggleborns, per say, as that would have been an open invitation for trouble, but many people who had spoken out and were soon viciously harassed for it. These folks—Benjy Fenwick, Emmeline Vance, and Nicholas and Sarah McKinnon to name a few—began to get involved in the "thing" that Charlus was working on, forming the very early stages of the Order. These activities began while James was away at school in his fifth year and heightened very much that summer before he began his sixth, the same summer that Sirius Black escaped a furious battle in his own home before coming to permanently live with the Potters for safety. James, for his part, was kept out of the movement, but he knew his parents were doing something important, dangerous, and most prominently, valiant; subsequently, after watching such great things, he had a lot of character growth that summer and went back to school a changed boy. He matured greatly, focused on what was more important, and really began to shape up. He left Lily Evans and Severus Snape alone for the whole of his sixth year, a fact that miffed the two of them for entirely different reasons, and though he was still a troublemaker, he became a good kid.
The Potter home, for its part, was an enormous estate—Phoenix Grounds—with many levels and many rooms and it became the loosely official meeting place for the Order (of course, it was not called Order of the Phoenix yet, but was merely a group of friends who would meet for tea and discuss politics…and make plans for what they would do if. No one, however, was willing to define what this if was; they would remain silent, safe until that if occurred. But when it did, they said, they would be ready.) However, as they were doing nothing illegal, and the Potter family was well known for entertaining, they figured they were safe in their old walls. The only means of protection were a few old Charms of the ancient Potter family's that hadn't been renewed in years. Having fallen into disrepair, these Protections were weak, against the knowledge of the owners. These semi-clandestine meetings went on, and as the Death Eater attacks multiplied and more people—young and old—began to attend, James found it irresistible to poke his nose into matters a little further.
At the beginning of the summer before James' seventh year, Charlus made sure to visit all the Muggleborns registered with Hogwarts, to be sure everything was well, and tell them that they must contact him if they noticed anything strange about. To keep his very bored seventeen year old out trouble one day, he took him along on one of these visits—which happened to be to the young Ms. Evans' house. She confessed that there had been some strange things—an unusual amount of Apparation cracks down near Spinner's End, much as she didn't want to admit it, and a few too many glimpses of Slytherin alumni on the streets nearby.
After that, James withdrew from poking into his parents' affairs and focused on spending the summer with Lily. She coached the local swim team at her neighborhood pool and James was happily swept into the culture of the team. He met her friends, played with her pupils, and, despite how much it hurt him, kept to the strict "platonic relationship" mantra he'd held onto whenever he was in her vicinity for the past year. He had decided this was the only way he could ever heal the relation between them, and to further drill this into his mind, began to flirt recreationally with one of Lily's teammates as a counterweight to his feelings for the redhead in question. And yet, inexplicably, Lily found that she was not quite as okay with this relationship as she would have been a mere month before. Despite the two teenagers' convoluted feelings for each other, she and James' friendship blossomed and that was more than they could have ever hoped for a year ago. Once, he took her to his house, where they walked in on a meeting in the kitchen with a large amount of people—some of the younger ones they recognized as their graduated friends from Hogwarts. Odd though it was, they ignored the meeting and carried on with their idyllic summer. It was in mid-July that Lily wheedled James into discussing his budding courtship with her friend and teammate, but he quickly corrected her on the matter that he and this young woman were only goofing around. And upon hearing these words, Lily finally kissed James and they, at long last, entered the much-anticipated relationship.
She had only met James' parents twice before they were killed.
Only a week after James' and Lily's happy announcement that they were, indeed, dating, the Marauders, after a day out, arrived back at Phoenix Grounds only to find aflame and Mr. and Mrs. Potter murdered, their bodies grotesquely and artistically arranged on the front lawn. One of the great, family dogs, a friend of Sirius' in fact, was killed in the attack as well, trying to protect Charlus and Dorea. This was the great and terrible if the movement had been waiting for and though the Ministry chalked it up to an accident, the movement—the newly-christened Order of the Phoenix—was born. Or rather, reborn. They would not let things like this happen again—this was no longer sabotage and disappearances now, it was open warfare. James, in grief and anger, demanded to be let into the Order, Lily and Sirius right behind, quickly followed by Remus and Peter. They were recruited, adopted, and officiated. The older members eventually began to refer to this influx of students as "the crowd."
James was entirely devastated and it was lowest Lily had ever seen him. While he was grieving and she was caring for him, they grew together immensely. James, now very much aware of mortality and the shortness of life, began thinking asking her to marry him, noting that, with the war coming, he'd rather do it sooner than later.
Emmeline Vance (36)—Charlus' protégée at the Auror Department. She was a gruff, abrasive woman who got her job done better than anybody else. Not very easy to love, very hard to like—she and Charlus got along well, though he had a more obvious soft side. She was tortured for information on how many Order members there were, where their safe houses were, who were their sympathizers and supporters, and most importantly, who was the contact in the Hogwarts student body and who/how many students were they planning to recruit once the seventh years graduated? The question of the seventh years was a big one, as both sides knew they had great, young, willing supporters coming from the school very soon. Apparently, Emmeline died protecting James, Lily, Sirius, Remus, and Peter, as they were the ones discreetly working around the school trying to get others involved. This happened during their final year at Hogwarts.
Edgar Bones (37)-His parents were held hostage for three days to make Edgar give himself up but the Order convinced him that his mother and father would agree it was better if he stayed away. (Their reasoning was that the parents were older and had lived their lives; while the utilitarian approach called Edgar to take care of his wife and two little children as well as those he could help by remaining a living member of the Order.) Though it tore him apart, Edgar agreed, and his mum and dad were subsequently murdered. However, even though the Order went to great lengths to secure his house; his wife and children were abducted on their way home from Muggle primary school a week later. Edgar gave himself up for them, was taken to a warehouse where, instead of seeing his loved ones released, was forced to watch the three killed. He was then physically tortured himself for information and murdered. The whole business started two weeks after James, Lily, Remus, Peter, and Sirius graduated from school and joined the Order.
It was a huge wake-up call to them, for they had grand expectations about the glory of war and after just getting to know Edgar, it was terrifying to think of how quickly he was gone. Peter panicked and wanted out of the Order, but he only mentioned this to Lily, who he knew wouldn't judge him for it. She told him she was scared too, but they were in this together now and that the five of them would stick with each other no matter what. This comforted Peter, and he remained.
Marlene McKinnon (20): Once they started using the rebuilt Phoenix Grounds as the official headquarters, after they'd renewed the ancient, strong protection charms, Marlene would often stay over, even though she still lived with her parents. She'd gotten out of school and had less than a year of Auror training before she went over with Dorcas, Alice, and Frank to the Order, though she was younger than they, and joined the Order. In all the confusion, she never had time to get her own place. She was young, impulsive, and wild—she and Sirius had had a brief relationship while in school, she a seventh year, he a fifth—and they rekindled this heated, friends-with-benefits affair when they began living together in the same home at headquarters again. One night at Phoenix Grounds, at a small party that Lily had thrown together as a short distraction from the war, a message came in that Marlene's home was being attacked and she arrived to find it on fire, her parents' corpses thrown on the lawn, arranged the same way Mr. and Mrs. Potter had been, and the Death Eaters fleeing. After Killing two, she grabbed onto Travers and Disapparated with him to avenge her parents. But she wound up at the Death Eater headquarters where they overwhelmed and killed her.
A week later, the Order found pieces of her body dumped at the site of next Death Eater attack to bait her friends further. It occurred ten months after "the crowd" joined. Sirius became incredibly more brutal in battle after this and when Peter timidly mentioned that they'd gotten in over their heads with the war, Sirius threatened him (still grieving for Marley and appalled at the idea of not avenging her.) Remus, for his part, was very much involved in the same efforts as he would later be in the second war—trying to gain werewolf support, and was often away on special missions. Peter felt like his friends didn't care about how afraid he was and that they were no longer "in this together." Meanwhile, James and Lily, definitely scared by mortality at the death of their good friend, got engaged. They were married three weeks later in the backyard of Phoenix Grounds with only the Order invited for safety. They had to send pictures to Daisy Evans, Lily's mum, and none of Lily's Muggle friends were even allowed to find out. Instead of a honeymoon, they got two weeks off of active duty with Order work. They were too busy figuring out their new life with each other to really deal with Peter.
Benjy Fenwick (58): During a battle in which a Muggle village was attacked, a Death Eater had goaded a terrified family into their car. They were trying to drive away from the inexplicable terror in their neighborhood but he, spotting them, blew out their tires and locked their doors. After rolling the car over twice to hear them scream, he was about to blow the whole car up, family of five inside, when Benjy, nearby, recognized the spell and jumped in front of the curse. Remus, Frank, and Dorcas came to the family's rescue, promptly Obliviated them, put them back in their house, and found their cat. However, Benjy had been blown to bits. He was killed ten months after Marlene, a little under two years since the crowd joined.
(About this time, Regulus Black (17) was killed by Voldemort. Sirius played it off like the kid had deserved what he'd got by signing up with the Death Eaters but he could be heard nostalgically and remorsefully muttering "taught him how to play Quidditch" or "made sure he never saw Mother in a real rage" under his breath when he was deliriously over-tired or had just woken up and was still bleary.)
Gideon Prewett (26). Gideon's girlfriend, with whom he had been going steady since their fifth year, was a Muggleborn girl named Sadie. She was vaguely involved with the Order once she graduated, back when it was still a political tea group in the Potter's kitchen, but she came home to her flat once and found the Dark Mark stamped on her door. (During this time, "the crowd"—Lily, James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter—were in their sixth year.) A week later, she returned from a meeting to find the apartment completely ransacked and her cat slaughtered, its' carcass smeared all over her living room. Written in the cat's blood was, "YOU'RE NEXT." Despite her protests, Gideon convinced her to leave the country and be safe. He promised that they'd get married when the war was over and she'd returned from France. However, he was killed three and a half years later with his twin. It took five Death Eaters to take them down.
Sadie grieved for four years before she even considered dating again. But, she eventually moved on, got married, and, realizing that time had certainly passed her by, quickly had kids. The only time any one of them (other than Fabian) ever saw Gideon cry was James, early on an Other World morning, on Sadie's wedding day, when James came downstairs for an early fly and found Gideon turned away from him, standing motionless in front of the enchanted telly, small sobs audible every now and then as he watched her walk down the aisle. Every now and then, if someone in the Other World house happens to go downstairs in the night, they may find Gideon dutifully checking up on Sadie's children while they sleep. Especially the youngest, the third, named Gideon Alexander Moore. When it happens, they just turn around, go back upstairs, and never bring it up. Gideon and Fabian were killed five months after Benjy, a little over two years since the crowed joined.
Fabian Prewett (26)- He was ambushed with his twin when they checked on a reported disturbance in a neighborhood where a registered nine-year old Muggleborn boy lived. (The Ministry had erased its records on the Muggleborns, but they always feared that some files may have been leaked. Having the files turned out was one of the last things Charlus did in his position as head of the Auror Department, but the Order was always trying to be careful.) However, this report was trap staged by the Death Eaters, and it took five of them to take the two Prewetts down. Fabian and Gideon were killed five months after Benjy, two and half years since the joining of the crowd.
Dorcas Meadowes (25)-Dorcas joined the Order after a year in the Auror program with her best friend, boyfriend, and his brother—Marlene, Fabian, and Gideon. Her parents had died when she was in her second year and she'd lived with an aunt, but Hogwarts was always her true home. After graduation, she was taken under the wing of her long-time hero, Mad-Eye Moody, who liked her for her work ethic and her spunk. The four became good friends with Frank and Alice Longbottom, a few years their senior and final-year Auror Trainees. Fabian and Dorcas became engaged during their tenure as apprentices to the Aurors, but they wanted to get married only once they were officially apart of the Department. Alice and Frank brought them to the first tea meeting in the Potter's kitchen, and upon Mad-Eye's recommendation, Dorcas was the first of her friends to be allowed in, though the Prewetts and Marlene soon followed.
The war stretched on, with "the crowd" joining them soon enough, but just when Dorcas had become adjusted to the idea of trying to live a good life despite the fighting, Fabian and Gideon were killed. Soon after the death of her fiancé, she became a shadow of her former self and was sloppy in her fighting (something Mad-Eye would coach her on, desperately hoping she would stop making mistakes in fights because he knew he couldn't always cover her.) On the night she was killed, Mad-Eye only allowed her to come to the fight because they were short that night, with Alice and Lily now both pregnant and not in condition—physically or morally—to engage in combat. James, while he himself was dueling, saw her standing during battle, her wand held down; though she watched the green jet shoot towards her, she never even bothered to put a up a shield from the Killing Curse.
It was later speculated if she'd gotten herself killed on purpose in battle in order to be with Fabian again. No one ever asked though, even once they were all in Other World together. She was killed two weeks after Fabian and Gideon, a little over two years since the crowed joined. Mad-Eye, in particular, took her death very hard. Soon after this, Peter was approached about being the double agent. Afraid of what could happen to him and foreseeing that they would only end up losing the war, thus death was inevitable for everyone else anyway, he agreed.
Caradoc Dearborn (52)—The Order presumed him dead after he was thrown against a wall while were retreating from a fight. Only Remus saw this but as he was going back to help, Sirius grabbed his arm and Side-Along-ed him. Caradoc and Remus were good friends, both of them intellectuals and naturally quiet so they got on well. Remus swore that he couldn't have survived a blast like that and after all, the Death Eaters would have either killed him if they found him or he had escaped the enemy and would return to headquarters if he lived. When he did not come back to headquarters on his own, they decided he was gone. However, Caradoc was really knocked unconscious, undiscovered by the enemy, and later awakened in a Muggle hospital with no memory of his previous life. He started over, got a decent job working in a bookstore (which he would eventually buy and run himself,) married a divorced Muggle woman who had two teenage children and he never remembered nor regained his magic powers. He lived a very happy, comfortable life. However, for all the Order was concerned, he "died" three years after the crowd arrived, three months after Harry and Neville were born.
Daisy (49) and Thomas (51) Evans: Daisy and Thomas jovially ignored Lily's pleas for them to leave the country once she had gone into hiding because they never fully appreciated the gravity of the situation. They were Killed in their home by Death Eaters who wanted information about Lily's whereabouts. Peter told the Potters about the strike, he being the only one who could access their home in Godric's Hollow. There were no signs of struggle in the home. Lily both hoped and hoped against that meant that Snape had been involved, because her parents would have let him in to the house, despite what she said against him. (They remained convinced to the near-end that it was just a phase in the friendship between daughter and boy.) The lack of struggle meant that they had most likely not been tortured, whereas under normal circumstances this would certainly have happened. Lily hoped this meant Snape had protected them from the Cruciatus Curse, but at the same time, heaven forbid her once-best-friend actually murdered her parents. This occurred three and a half years after the crowd joined.
Lily (21) and James (21) Potter—murdered in their home by Voldemort. Four years after joining the Order
Alice (26) and Frank (27) Longbottom—They knew each other from school but only became attracted to each other while they were in the Auror program together. Alice, a final-year Trainee was taught alongside Dorcas Meadowes, a freshman, underneath Mad-Eye Moody. Whenever the cadets were called out for field work, they traveled with Mad-Eye. This was usually seen as a punishment sent from the universe by most wizards who'd had Mad-Eye as a teacher, but the girls adored him. Frank, meanwhile, trained with a younger boy named Patrick, who never joined the Order, choosing instead to stay with the Ministry, despite their corruption. Patrick became a spy for the Order later on in the war and would smuggle them the reports people sent the Ministry. When Frank himself was a new cadet, he had trained along with a senior, Kingsley Shacklebolt. Frank and Alice got married a few months after completing their training and had experience as Aurors before quitting to join the Order. They were tortured into insanity a few weeks after the fall of Voldemort when they searched an abandoned home believed to be a safe house for Death Eaters. They were ambushed there and Crucio'ed by Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange and Barty Crouch Jr. This occurred four years after the crowd joined the Order.
