A/N: I'm very sorry for the long wait, but I was finally able to find the time to write this, and to get the muses to cooperate ;)
I hope you enjoy this last installment of "Positively Positive", and please if you will, take the time to leave me a note in the box at the bottom of the page - it would mean the world to me :)
[chapter six]
The morning light is streaming through the blindfolds when Andy turns on her side reaching her hand out for Sam.
When all she's reaching is air, she opens her tired eyes taking in the empty bedroom. "Sam?" Andy yawns, propping herself up on her elbows.
'Maybe he's gotten up for Jer?' she wonders to herself, as she sits up straight in bed, raising her arms above her head, stretching her limbs out.
"Would you look at that, Buddy?" Sam's voice carries from the doorway. "Your mommy actually has eyes." He quips holding their son close to his chest with one arm, while having a tray filled with breakfast perched on the other.
"Ha-ha, Swarek," Andy retorts, smiling brightly at the sight of Jeremy cuddled up against Sam's chest. These past six months have been pure bliss. Jer is a snuggler, which his mother swears he gets from his father. He loves to eat weird concoctions of baby foods, which his dad swears Jeremy gets from his mother.
But above all, Jeremy Oliver Swarek is everything to his parents. He's everything they could have ever wished for – and more.
Jer, as he's called by his parents and their friends and family is wearing a white onesie with a police badge perched in the middle saying 'My daddy can arrest your daddy'. Sam had been adamant about buying it when he'd seen it in the baby store the other day.
"Give me," Andy proclaims holding her arms out for their baby when Sam walks towards her with Boo in tow.
"Mommy's quite demanding this morning, eh Jer?" he jokes, kissing his son on the cheek before passing him over to Andy.
"Hi, baby," she coos at the smiling baby, whose pacifier falls out of his mouth when he's smiling upon seeing his mother. Cradling Jeremy in her arms, Andy notices something sparkling wrapped around their son's thumb. "What..?"
It's a ring.
"So, you finally noticed," Sam smiles down at a speechless Andy, who's just staring at the ring.
"Sam, it's..," her throat is completely dry, and her mind is empty for words when she drags her eyes off of the ring and onto Sam's face.
"Beautiful?" he asks getting down on one knee next to the bed making Andy's eyes all but bulge out of her head.
Nodding her head, she reaches up with one hand, to stop the tears from falling, but without luck. "It's gorgeous."
The ring is platinum with a princess cut diamond sitting in the center of it, surrounded by five small diamonds on either side.
Reaching over, Sam takes the ring off of Jeremy's thumb, and holds it between his own thumb and forefinger when he asks Andy a question; he's been dying to ask her ever since he found out, that there'd be a Jeremy.
"Andy McNally," he says picking up Andy's left hand with his. "Will you marry me?" Sam asks, chewing on his bottom lip, as he watches the tears continue to make their way down her cheek.
Her breath hitches, as she takes in the man sitting on bended knee in front of her. How did this happen? How did they get to here?
It seems like one day, she'd been chasing him down a back alley, and according to Sam, tackling him and trying to kiss him, and the next they were together, they were parents and they had brought life to this amazing little guy, who stole their breaths away with his amazing smile.
Nothing that had come before matters, only they matter. Her, Sam and Jer. That's all that matters now, and all that'll matter in the years to come.
Which is exactly why her answer is what it is.
"Yes," Andy nods her head slowly making Sam's brows go up way high, like they have a habit of doing when he's around her. "Yes, Sam Swarek, I will marry you."
"You will?" he asks, his lips curling up in a tell-tale smile.
"I will." Andy repeats, watching Sam take a deep breath before sliding the ring onto her finger.
"Perfect fit." He muses looking down at the ring that he'd spent months deciding on, now being wrapped around his fiancé's finger.
Fiancée.
"We are."
Putting Jeremy down on the bed with his rattle in his mouth, Andy wraps her arms around Sam's throat and gives him a tender kiss on the lips.
"I love you," Sam breathes against her neck after they've pulled out of their kiss.
"Good," Andy smiles brightly at him. "Cause you're stuck with me now..," she says right when Jer gives a squeal from his spot on the bed. "Us," she amends looking down at their son from her perch in Sam's arms wondering how she ever got to be this happy.
"One more push, Andy," the doctor urged her.
Her contractions had started almost ten hours ago, so Andy was more than ready for their baby boy to make his entrance into the world.
"I'm too tired..," her voice cracked, as her entire body began to shake, flopping back against the mattress.
"Just one more push, Andy and he'll be here," Sam told her pressing his lips against her sweaty forehead. It killed him to watch her being in so much pain, and knowing that no matter what he couldn't make it go away – only one final push could.
"You promise?" she whispered when Sam helped support her back, and getting her up in a sitting position again.
"I promise."
Within minutes, the only sounds that existed in the sterile room were Andy's sobbing and the loud wailing of one Jeremy Oliver Swarek, who'd entered the world.
"He's here, Andy," Sam whispered against her skin, as her sobs began to quiet down. She didn't know why she was crying, it was just the emotions of the entire day that came to the surface.
"Can I hold him?" her timid voice asked the nurse, who was cleaning their son up at a nearby table.
"Most definitely," the nurse, whose nametag said 'Sophia', smiled lovingly at the new mother before swaddling the baby up in a blue blanket. "There you go," she cooed at the baby, as she carried him the few feet to where Sam and Andy were anxiously waiting to meet their son for the very first time.
As Sophia got nearer and nearer with little Jeremy, Sam felt like such a nervous wreck, which was ridiculous since he'd held babies before. He was the Godfather to two of Oliver's girls, not to mention all the time he'd spent with his niece and nephew over the years, but this, this was very different.
This was their son; his and Andy's, someone who was made out of the love that they shared. He was their little boy.
Jeremy.
As if sensing Sam's nervousness, the nurse instructed him on how to hold the baby. Before he knew it, Jeremy was placed in his arms, letting out an almighty yawn making both of his parents chuckle.
"Congratulations." The nurse smiled after having helped Sam sit down on a chair next to Andy's bed.
"Thank you," Sam replied, as the family of three were left alone to get familiar with each other. "This is amazing," he gushed, as his eyes roamed over every inch of their son's face.
"It is, isn't it?" Andy agreed with tears in her eyes, as Jeremy's small hand squeezed the pinky that his mother had placed in it.
"You wanna hold him?"
"You know I do." She beamed up at him, as Sam placed their son gently in Andy's waiting arms. After a couple of seconds of fussing, Jeremy calmed down being cradled up against his mother's beating heart and being surrounded by the smell that was uniquely Andy.
"He's gorgeous," she smiled placing a tender kiss on their son's forehead. "Welcome to the world, Jeremy Oliver Swarek."
"You sure about this?" Sam asks much later, turning off the ignition of the silver truck in the parking lot behind 'The Penny'.
They're meeting their friends and colleagues inside to celebrate their engagement tonight. Andy is stoked to get out of the house for a couple of hours minus their baby boy. She loves Jer above all else, but it's nice to feel like Andy, and not just Jer's mom sometimes.
Tommy had offered to take Jeremy for the night, making tonight the first night in quite a while, that Sam and Andy have spent alone. So, they can actually enjoy each other tonight, and not be focused on listening to Jer's every need.
Smiling over at Sam, Andy says, "I am. Our friends are in there," she says nodding her head towards the entrance of the bar before continuing. "Plus, my dad has Jer for the night, which means..," leaning in she whispers, "Alone-time tonight," before pressing a soft kiss to Sam's lips.
"Point taken."
Walking in, hand-in-hand, Sam and Andy are greeted by applause and hollers from their friends and colleagues – congratulating them on their engagement.
Sam gives Oliver the evil eye since he'd promised to only include their close friends and colleagues to this shindig, and as far as Sam can tell pretty much every copper from 15 Division is in attendance.
"Welcome to the party, luvers!" Shaw greets them – flanked by Traci, who Andy suspects had a hand in the planning of this party, which she is eternally grateful for.
"It looks great, Trace," Andy whispers to her best friend mid-hug after she's taken in all the balloons, streamers and just the over-all ambiance that has taken over 'The Penny' for one evening.
"You want a drink?" Sam asks when they're making their way towards the bar.
"A beer."
Nodding his head, Sam turns towards the bartender and orders up his usual and a beer for Andy, while she eyes the stage where she knows that she'll be standing on soon, professing her love for this amazing man that she's going to be married to soon.
"Nervous?" Traci asks, while Sam's in conversation with Oliver at the bar.
"About marrying Sam? No," she shakes her head. Andy feels safe and loved and confident that Sam will lead her down the right path for the rest of their lives. "About going up there?" she asks bopping her head in the direction of the stage. "Hell, yeah."
Laughing, Traci grasps Andy's left hand in hers, inspecting the rock on Andy's ring finger. "Sam outdid himself with this thing."
"He does that every day, no matter what he does. God, Trace," Andy shakes her head at just how much she loves him. "Even walking the floor with Jer at night makes my heart flutter."
"You've got it bad." Traci agrees with a nod of her head. "But so do I." She adds, looking to where Steve is standing with Gail and Holly, undoubtedly chatting them up about his latest case.
Andy smiles sweetly at her friend, deliriously happy that she's found love again. "I just hope I don't freeze up when I get up there." She worries.
"You'll do great."
"I'm happy for you, brother," Oliver says clasping Sam on his back – like men do. "McNally will make a beautiful bride, and a great wife."
"I know," Sam replies nodding his head at his friend's words. Turning around, so he has his back against the bar, he watches, as Nash inspects the rock that he put on Andy's finger this morning. Just the look on her face when he'd proposed had been enough proof that Sam had needed to know that he's doing the right thing. He loves her above all else, and the fact that she and Jer are in his life now, only makes his life all that better.
"When is the wedding?"
"You in a rush to get us hitched or something?" Sam quips with a raised brow.
"I've been waiting for this day forever, brother! Waiting for you and McNally to get your acts together has been excruciating."
"Yeah..," Sam nods his head at his friend's statement. "For us too." They've never taken the easy route, him and McNally, but what matters is that they're here now, exactly where they're supposed to be.
Together.
"How is little Ollie Jr. fairing these days?"
"His name is Je-re-my." Sam spells out his son's name, all but rolling his eyes at Shaw. Their friend had been stoked when he and Andy had told him that they were naming their son after him and Jerry, but he never did let an opportunity go where he could tease the little boy's parents.
"Got any pictures to share?" Noelle asks joining her two friends. "You know how I'm a sucker for those dimples, Dimples," she winks at Sam, who is grabbing his cell from the back pocket of his jeans.
"This is from a couple of nights ago," he explains scrolling through all the photos on his phone before getting to the one, he's searching for.
The photo had been taken at bath time – Jer was sitting in a small tub, his hair sticking up like a Mohawk with baby shampoo in it, and sticking his fist in his mouth.
"Oh my Goodness, you want to just eat him right up," Noelle sighs. "You're a very lucky man." She adds tapping him on the cheek with a finger.
"Yeah, I know..," Sam replies. Looking to where Andy is standing with Traci, he nods his head knowingly before adding. "I'm a very lucky man."
A little while later, Sam is sitting at a table with Oliver, Noelle and Frank wondering where his fiancée is hiding out when the sound of her voice suddenly comes from the stage.
"What's going on..?" he turns questioning eyes to his best friend, but Oliver just shakes his head, does a zip motion with his fingers, while wearing a shit-eating grin on his lips.
"Hi everyone," Andy waves from the stage to all the people that are gathered at 'The Penny' tonight. She gets a collective "Hey, McNally," back making her smile brightly down at Sam, who's leaned back against the chair by now with a small smile on his lips.
"I'm engaged!" she shrieks making everyone laugh out loud at her obvious statement, while she's showing off the rock that is sitting on her finger.
Looking up at Andy, Sam can't help but crack a smile. This is the McNally, that he knows and loves. She knows him enough to know, that he'd never get up on that stage to announce their engagement, but Andy needs the attention. Not because she craves it or needs it, but because it makes it real.
The reality of the two of them finally being together, finally being a family and finally being them is something neither of them really thought would happen – especially not after Andy had returned from the taskforce with Collins.
But here they are.
"Because I know Sam as well as I do, then I also know that there was no way in the world, that he'd get up here and perform a speech, so that's why I'm up here now. He's probably sitting down there right now," Andy says pointing her finger at him. "Thinking 'wrap it up, McNally, these people have better things to do than to listen you do your thing'", she delivers the line in a mock voice of Sam's.
The entire room belts out laughing, while Sam just looks up at Andy with so much love in his eyes that it nearly makes her lose her breath.
"I met him nearly six years ago, in a back alley, and if you believe everything Sam says, then I tackled him and tried to kiss him," Andy pauses when everyone laughs. "But if you believe me," she adds pointing at finger at her chest. "Then I was just too fast for him."
"You go, girl!" Traci hoots a couple of tables down, wrapped up in Steve's arms.
Scoffing, Sam shakes his head at his fiancée. He hates the limelight himself, but hearing Andy telling everyone the story of how they met, he can't help but find a weird comfort in being the center of attention.
With her.
"Anyway," she picks up her speech again. "I really didn't like him that much at first," Andy scrunches her nose in remembrance. "I thought he was bossy; always ordering me around, making me bring him coffee, stubborn; never letting me drive the squad," her eyes dance, looking down at Sam's face, while everyone else laughs at her description of their early relationship. "But then, I got to know the man behind the uniform. The caring, passionate and loving guy that you see sitting down there," Andy bops her head in Sam's direction before continuing. "When I watch him with Jeremy, our little boy, I realize how lucky I am, that I was the one, who tackled him and tried to kiss him in a back alley all those years ago." Jumping off of the stage, Andy walks towards where Sam is sitting, while speaking, "Because without everything that came before, I wouldn't have this; our now and I wouldn't trade our now for anything."
Stopping right in front of Sam, Andy leans down, placing her hands on each armrest of the chair. "This is where you're supposed to kiss me, Swarek."
"Oh, okay," he shrugs before pulling her into his lap with a yelp, and coating her lips with his.
The entire room breaks out in hoots and hollers, while Sam continues to ply Andy's lips with kisses thanking whatever there is left to believe in for this amazing woman lying in his arms.
"I love you." Sam tells her when they break apart to pull air into their restricted lungs.
Brushing her nose against his, Andy reciprocates with "I love you too."
Wrapped around each other, Sam and Andy stumble through the front door of their home alerting a tired Boo of his owners' arrival. But somehow the dog knows that his presence isn't required right now, so he turns onto his other side with a loud sigh.
"God, I've missed this..," Andy sighs; the back of her head making contact with the wall, Sam's hard body is pressing her up against.
"McNally..," he groans against the side of her neck.
"Mmm..," she sighs wrapping her arms around Sam's neck.
"No more talking tonight, eh?" Sam quips playfully, as he grabs Andy by the waist and lifts her.
Wrapping her legs around his waist, Andy frames his face with her hands. "I love you so much, Sam."
"You're crap at taking orders," he retorts before climbing the stairs.
Sam carries her to the bed, putting Andy on her feet by the foot of the bed. Unbuttoning her shirt, he gazes into her eyes.
"I love you too."
Much later, gasping for breath, they are lying on their backs in bed, staring into the ceiling.
"That was..," Andy breathes.
"What?" Sam asks turning his head on the pillow to look at her flushed face. "Have I finally rendered you speechless after six years?"
"Ha-ha!" she cackles, feigning a punch to his crotch.
"Hey!" he exclaims, grabbing her wrist with his hand. "If you're not careful, you'll hurt the family jewels, and then there's no little brother or sister for Jer."
Andy's grin vanishes at hearing those words. Sure, she doesn't want Jer to be an only child like she's been, but to hear Sam actually talk about them having another baby is surreal.
"What?" he asks with raised eyebrows. "You do want that, don't you?"
Shaking her head, Andy replies with "Of course; yes. I just..," pausing, she licks her lips.
"You just…what..?" Sam asks.
"Tonight is practically the first night in I don't know how long, where it's just been the two of us, and you're already talking about expanding our family."
Propping himself up on his elbow, Sam uses his other hand to tilt Andy's face up, so she's looking him in the eyes. "When you told me that you were pregnant with Jer, I couldn't believe it. I was shocked; yeah by the news itself, but most of all because I never thought I'd ever be a dad. I mean, my childhood was less than ideal, and I never thought I'd have anything to offer a kid, but now..," swallowing audibly, Sam slides his thumb across Andy's bottom lip before continuing. "Now I look at you and Jer, and I know that there's nothing I can't do as long as you guys are there with me, and I want to see our family expand even more. I want Jer to have a little sister that he can protect, a mini-you, just like Jer is a mini-me."
"So, you finally admit it, eh?" she smiles brightly up at him.
"Well," Sam shrugs his shoulders before plopping down onto his back. "He could take after someone far worse than his old man." He says pulling Andy into his chest. "Like his Godfather for one." Sam quips making Andy's body shake with laughter.
"He's constantly calling him Ollie Jr.," she kisses him on the cheek before resting her head against his heart.
"He's jealous of course, already at six months, Jer's got more hair than him."
"You're terrible!" Andy chastises an amused Sam by kicking him, albeit softly, in the shins.
After several moments of silence, she can't take it anymore, and rolls on top of Sam – much to his surprise if those raised brows of his are any indication.
"Jer's six months old."
"I know..," Sam drags the word out, not quite sure what Andy's getting at here.
"Let's give it a year, a year with you, me and Jer and then we can plan it this time."
"You do love those plans of yours, eh?" Sam smirks, tucking a strand of hair behind her left ear.
"I do," she nods her head. "Not that most of them ever play out with us," Andy scoffs.
"The best things in life come from un-planned things, McNally."
"Not for long."
"Huh?" Sam's forehead furrows in confusion at her words.
"McNally," she reminds him with a smile on her lips. "It'll be Swarek before long," Andy waves her left hand in front of Sam's face showing off her ring, that it took him months to decide on.
"Sounds good to me," he kisses her softly before shifting back to look at the ring on her finger. "You really like it?" Sam asks twirling it around on her finger.
"I love it. But not because of how it looks to the naked eye," she admits making Sam frown at her words. "Because it's from you, Sam. It's something that you chose for me to wear. It's a sign of the love that we share, the love that Jer's born from, and I love you for it."
Interlacing his fingers with Andy's, Sam nods his head at her words. "You do have your way with words, McNally."
"I know," she shrugs tucking her head underneath his chin.
Scoffing at her directness that is uniquely McNally, Sam wraps his arms around her, placing a kiss on the top of her head.
No matter, what anyone's said in the past, or the messes that they've caused themselves, then this moment right here, is all that matters.
Their moment.
FIN!
