Author's Note: I've now seen Star Trek three times in theaters, and am going for a fourth time next weekend with my dad. One might say I'm obsessed.

This is a short one shot that came to me when I noticed that during this scene, Kirk and Spock had gone from standing several inches apart to having their arms touch. The fangirl in my squealed.

Disclaimer: Star Trek isn't mine :( If it was, Kirk and Spock would be together.

Kirk didn't think that it was possible, but he had actually begun to sympathize with Khan, despite everything the man had done.

"But I was discovered," Khan said, voice unsteady as he recounted his attempts to smuggle his crew out of Marcus's grasp. "I had no choice but to escape alone. And when I did, I had every reason to suspect that Marcus had killed every single one of the people I hold most dear."

The sheer desperation and pain in Khan's voice was enough to make Kirk realize that he and Kahn weren't all that different; they were both fiercely protective of their crew, willing to go to any lengths to protect them. They just had very different ways of going about it.

"So I responded in kind," Khan continued, turning to face Kirk and Spock. "My crew is my family, Kirk." Khan looked up and caught Kirk's eye. "Is there anything you would not do for your family?"

The question stilled Kirk, and he felt the air leave his lungs. Images of his crew flit across his mind at an alarming pace, reminding him of all of the people he was responsible for. Bones, his best friend whom he had met the day he joined Starfleet. Scotty, whose friendship meant more to Kirk than Scotty realized, considering what had transpired between the two of them in engineering earlier that day. Uhura. Chekov. Sulu. His closest friends. Countless numbers of ensigns. The engineering crew. Everyone who made the ship who she was.

Spock.

Spock, who cited regulation at him any chance he had the opportunity. Spock, whose friendship had come to mean more to Kirk than he had ever realized or dreamed of. Spock, who had made Kirk lose his ship, yet still shown him loyalty. Spock, whose arm was currently touching his, the heat radiating all the way up Kirk's arm and causing a flush to appear on his neck.

When had that happened?

Spock had to know. Being a touch telepath, Spock had to know that their arms were touching, despite the layers of clothing separating their skin. Just to be sure, Kirk nudged his arm slightly, enough to where Spock would feel it, but small enough to where it would go unnoticed by any onlookers. When Spock nudged back instead of pulling away, Kirk was surprised at the wave of relief that overcame him, along with the increase in his heart rate.

Sulu's voice came through the comm before Kirk could put any more thought into it. "Proximity alert, sir. There's a ship at warp headed right for us."

"Klingons?" Kirk asked, shaking himself from the stupor he was currently in.

"At warp?" Khan asked, his voice hard. "No, Kirk. We both know who it is."

"I don't think so," Sulu replied. "It's not coming at us from Kronos."

In that moment, Kirk came to the realization that Kahn was right. About everything. As he and Spock ran to the bridge, Kirk glanced at Spock out of his peripheral vision and wondered exactly what had transpired between the two of them. Whatever it was, Kirk knew he would be fighting tenfold from here on out to have the chance to figure it out when all of this was over.

A/N: Reviews would be wonderful. :)
