Chapter 13: The last stand
"EVERYONE, GREAT HALL NOW!" The large man yelled as he marched out of the oversized wooden doors.
Stoick stormed through the crowds of people, beating up any stray outcasts that came in his path and grabbed hold of a befallen stone hammer as he repeatedly shouting his previous sentence every time he came across a group of his Viking brethren.
Suddenly a larger bulkier man came walking strongly towards the chief bashing anyone, even his own outcast kin, out of his way as he clutched a large deadly axe in his right hand. His eyes locked on his target. Stoick sized the man up looked his straight in the eyes and charged; hitting him full force into the iron wall of a component as they locked weapons inches away from their faces.
Both opposing forces were strong and near equal in strength until the outcast champion gave a sudden burst of energy sending Stoick back a few paces causing him to drop his hammer.
"you will NOT stay ruler of Berk! my master does not wish you to even take another breath whilst you are still in power of this island!" The champion said in a deep, husky voice that travelled across the battlefield. "I have orders to KILL you and I plan on for filling those orders with immense precision!" The Outcast launched his polished axe straight at Stoick. The chief acted quickly and swiftly moved to the right allowing the weapon to pass right past him imbedding itself into the back of another outcast fighter.
The Champion swung an upper cut towards the chief impacting him right in the left side of his jaw. He landed another fierce blow to stomach as he gripped onto the bulk of Stoick's shoulder. In retaliation, Stoick caught the Outcast champion directly in the nose with one hard knuckle strike, shattering the bones in his nose into shards like broken glass. As the crimson blood began to stream down his face he kicked the Viking in the knee causing an ear piercing crack to rattle through the air along with the man screaming out in pain. However it did not stop there; with a hopeful shot the intruder used his head to plummet Stoick to the hard earth as he once again charged at his opponent.
With Stoick on the ground the outcast went to take another punch at the chief only to have his hand stopped in mid sequence with that of Stoick's fist. The tension in the hold was rising causing both men to have beads of sweat trickle down their faces. Stoick cry out in anger and began to force the boulder of a fist away from his face. He made a quick glance to his left and right scanning for a weapon that would help him perpetrate his opponent's death. A small dagger came in sight and within arm's reach. He had to be swift, calling forth all of his strength he make a hard kick to the champions stomach forcing him off of his own body to the left; whilst the outcast got back to his feet ready to make another lunge at the man, Stoick grabbed the dagger and held it point up in front of his chest. Just as his opponent jumped at Stoick, realising his fate, tried to abort the lunge but came to no avail.
Straight through the throat. Sethering the windpipe causing a smooth river of blood to escape the laceration. He gargled and chocked as he tried to get to his feet but stumbled and fell lifelessly to the muddy earth.
Stoick got to his feet looking round at a few gobsmacked outcasts as they stared down at their once unbeatable champion. Out of the few outcasts who saw the fight two ran whilst the other two ran at Stoick. Stoick ripped an axe from a fallen outcasts hand and looked at the two idiots standing before him. Fear overtook their senses and instead made a hasty retreat away from the large man. The chief made a half smile and returned to shouting out commands as each Villager of Berk retreated to the great hall.
Hordes of Outcasts followed them up the steps to the marvellous building as the battle continued on the steep steps.
Meanwhile, Hiccup had been preparing. He hoped this contraption worked. No... It had to work.
"You ready bud?" He gave a look to Toothless who made a small mumbling noise. "Yep... me neither." He opened the door peering out to see an army of outcasts battling the other Villagers of berk on the doorstep to the great hall. None of them focusing on anything else. The plan was working.
"Common bud this way" Holding his finger to his lips he slipped out of the wooden doors, closely followed by his dragon and headed round the corner weapon in hand. Once out of complete sight Hiccup climbed onto Toothless' back and took off onto the far end of the great hall using his dragon's night stealth. Around the back of the building they came level to the wooden window and knocked in rhythm of taps. Both shutters opened as Astrid appeared handing Hiccup one end of some rope.
"Remember to give it a tug so we know you're ready" she said in a hushed voice, as he took the rope and continued to fly on up to the roof. Quickly dismounting, he tied the rope to one of the wooden knobs that protruded from the back of the thatch roof. He began to assemble the contraption and gestured to where toothless should stand for the machine to work. He ran towards the piece of rope at the back of the long roof and gave it a hard tug.
The message got through and Astrid called out to the chief who was on the front line. She glanced over to an unconscious, Alvin who was tied up in the corner of the hall. She and Stormfly had dragged him over here whilst Stoick was out on the battle field and Hiccup was preparing the weapon.
"Stoick! It's done!"She called giving back two tugs on the rope to Hiccup to tell her she got the message.
"FALL BACK! FALL BACK INTO THE HALL" Stoick ordered as the Vikings retreated into the great halls protection. He slammed the doors tightly shut as others rushed over to him helping secure the doors with the plank.
Hiccup walked to the edge of the roof and looked down upon the raging outcasts below.
"STOOOOOP!" Hiccup yelled catching the attention of the Outcasts at the base of the hall. "This attack on Berk ends NOW!"
An Outcast from the crowd yelled "And what makes you think we will you pathetic RUNT!"
"Bring out Alvin!" Hiccup called down as the doors creaked open slowly whilst Stoick pushed Alvin to the ground and releasing his grip from his hair. Alvin's hands were bound behind his back and covered in water most probably from trying to bring him out of unconsciousness.
Stoick stood next to the ban lying on the floor and began to speak "This war between us has gone on long enough! It ends here. I have tried to bring peace to this island and with your people for a long time, but kidnapping my boy was the last straw and so I present you with an ultimatum... You leave Berk now, free and unscathed by our blades and you can take Alvin with you. However if you don't not leave immediately than you all will perish including your beloved chief."
The crowd was silent. They pondered over the statement until they finally gave their answer as Savage stepped forward.
"Fine, we take your offering and will leave immediately with our leader."
"Wise choice" commented Stoick as he untied Alvin and slowly handed him over to Savage. The outcasts began to make a retreat, once joined with their leader.
Just before they reached the boats Alvin turned around and glared at Stoick. The unbroken stare pierced to the back of Stoick head until it was broken with a loud shout that erupted from Alvin's mouth.
"ATTACK!"
Panic shot through the chief's veins making its way to his brain signalling for him to make a command or at least do something.
"HICCUP! DO IT NOW!" He bellowed as the horde of outcasts came charging up the Island back towards the Great hall.
Hiccup shot a look at toothless "Now bud!" The dragon obeyed as he mustered up his plasma bolts and continuously fired them into the mechanism causing a shower of thousands of miniature plasma bolts to rise in the sky catching the eye of the Outcasts below. They ceased their charging and began to run in the opposite direction as the mini bombs of plasma hailed down on them slaughtering each Outcast it came into contact with. They hurried to the boats, their number depleting rapidly the boats were set aflame and began to burn into the unforgiving ocean until all that remained was the musky scent of the dead. However there was one. One small row boat got away. One small row boat slipped through their hands. Stoick could see it; he asked for his spyglass and looked through it eagerly to see his escapes.
It was none other than Alvin and Savage rowing hastily off into the distant fog of the night.
"How do we know he won't be back Stoick?" inquired a Astrid rushing to his side, eager to hear the chief reply.
"We don't Astrid, We don't"...
